Design of the Miniature High Impedance Surface Structure to Reduce Metallic Effect on the RFID Tag Antenna

Lee, Jui-Ni 24 July 2008 (has links)
ABSTRACT In this study, the properties of the high impedance surface structure are studied. We proceed to design the low profile and miniature high impedance surface structure. In order to conform to the IC chips of RFID and reduce the influence of metal objects, we add a layer of electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure on the back of the antenna. The EBG behaves as a high impedance surface, similar to a perfect magnetic conductor. This property of the EBG structure is able to isolate the antenna and backside environment and reduce the metallic effect. In order to achieve the requirements of small size and low cost on RFID tag antenna, we design the miniature, low profile and low cost high impedance surface structure. In this study, we use the slots and chip capacitance to miniaturize the dimension. Both approaches can reduce the influence of metallic objects. Although using slots can reduce the metallic effect, it does not have the advantage of low profile. Using chip capacitor can miniaturize the dimension and reduce metallic effect effectively. It also has advantages of low profile, low cost and low sensitivity to the frequency of the tag antenna. Finally, the high impedance surface structures are fabricated and measured when they combine with the tag antenna attached to the metallic object. The measured results agree with simulated ones well.

Gender and contestation in Bengali adda

Chatterjee, Anindita, active 21st century 20 January 2015 (has links)
The study investigates the constructed relationship between gender, language, and power in a type of conventional, informal discussion, commonly referred to as adda in Bengal. This research focuses on everyday contestations of authority and some ways that are differently framed by men and women, and as well as some implications of these strategies as they negotiate and position themselves within the setting of adda in Austin, Texas, a place away from Bengal. The corpus consists of a segment of recorded data within mixed-group interaction, including both men and women, among native Bengalis who are currently from Texas as well as from Bengal. I use conversation analysis as a methodology to analyze the sequential production of meaning, and study how participant roles emerge and are negotiated through the lens of an adda setting. The study investigates the transformation of a discussion between men and women into a format of debate, which is common in adda, and the strategies employed by the participants to seize the floor. The strategies analyzed include: collaboration between women to disagree with the male participants’ positions and vice-versa. Questioning as a practice can be a very powerful device within the situated space, as it demands a response from the recipient. The study builds on the recent scholarship on the multifunctional use of tag questions and contributes by adding a new perspective on how the tag-questions are employed by women as an interactional strategy to become co-tellers in the discussion. From the very outset, the study focuses on the use of tag-questions and how they are implemented in an interactional framework (by either men or women). The broader aim of this report is to use tag-question as a primary data set because of their complexity. The act of questioning is a very complex activity as it involves the context and positioning of the speaker as well as the recipient and how they both act and react to the question. In the segment analyzed in the report, women use tag question to question the men’s authority claims, but the questions are interpreted by men as a re-framing to a teacher-student paradigm, and undermine the women’s position. The female participants also create interruptions to redirect and reformulate the topic, in order to become co-tellers in the discussion. In exploring these strategies, I examine both the embodied behavior and the speech styles of both men and women. / text

PTAG - aktiv RFID-tag med GPS

Bengtsson, Christofer, Madsen, Kristoffer January 2008 (has links)
Free2Move AB is developing products for the market within wireless communication and identification, among those active RFID-tags. The company had an idea about providing one of their active RFID tags with a GPS receiver and transmit positions via an existing RFID protocol. Desire from the company was also the possibility to log positions and measure temperature. The finished prototype should also be able to be activated by movement. The company had proposal about components that were to be used in the project. A large part of the work was to understand how these worked and how to combine them to fulfill the requirements established in agreement with supervisor at Free2Move. A PIC microcontroller was used in the design of the prototype and software implemented for communication with GPS, RFID tag and other components. The result was a working prototype where an existing RFID tag was integrated in the same printed circuit board layout as the GPS receiver and other components that were used in the project.

Binary Directional Marker Placement for Mobile Robot Localization

Allen, River 28 August 2014 (has links)
This thesis looks at the problem of optimally placing binary directional proximity markers to assist a robot as it navigates waypoints through an environment. A simple planar fiducial marker is developed to serve as the binary directional proximity marker. A scoring function is proposed for marker placement as well as a method for random generation of hallway maps. Several common metaheuristic algorithms are run to find optimal marker placements with respect to the scoring function for a number of randomly generated hallway maps. From these results, placements are then evaluated by physical experimentation on an iRobot Create equipped with relatively inexpensive webcams. / Graduate

Functional and Topological Analysis of Acyl-CoA:Diacylglycerol Acyltransferase 2 From Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Liu, Qin 06 1900 (has links)
Acyl-CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.20, DGAT or DAGAT) is a membrane protein found mainly in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It catalyzes the final step in the biosynthesis of triacylglyerol (TAG or TG), which is the principal repository of fatty acids for energy utilization and membrane formation. Several lines of evidence have indicated that DGAT has a substantial effect on carbon flux into TAG. DGAT has at least two discrete family members (DGAT1 and DGAT2) with different physiological roles. High-resolution structures of both DGATs, however, are absent due to difficulties in purification. In order to gain insight into structural and functional relationships of DGATs, a functional DGAT2 protein from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ScDGAT2, also known as Dgalp) was selected. The structural and functional role of cysteine residues in ScDGAT2 was studied using site-directed mutagenesis (SDM) in combination with chemical modification. Although ScDGAT2 is susceptible to thiol-modifying reagents, none of the cysteines are essential for the catalytic activity or involved in structure support though disulfide linkages. Inhibition of DGAT activity by thiol-specific modification was localized to cysteine314, which is in the proximity of a highly conserved motif in DGAT2s. Thus, cysteine314 may reside in a crucial position near a possible active site or related to proper protein folding. The functional importance and topological orientation of signature motifs in ScDGAT2 were also studied using the same methods. Both the N- and C-termini of ScDGAT2 are oriented toward the cytosol. A highly conserved motif, 129YFP131, and a hydrophilic segment exclusive to ScDGAT2, reside in the ER and play essential roles in enzyme catalysis. In addition, the strongly conserved H195, which may be part of the active site of DGAT2, is likely embedded in the membrane. Although ScDGAT2 has a topology similar to that of murine DGAT2, there are striking differences which suggest that the topological organization of DGAT2 is not ubiquitously conserved. / Plant Science

The Impact of Working Memory, Tags, and Tag Clouds, on Search of Websites

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Although there are many forms of organization on the Web, one of the most prominent ways to organize web content and websites are tags. Tags are keywords or terms that are assigned to a specific piece of content in order to help users understand the common relationships between pieces of content. Tags can either be assigned by an algorithm, the author, or the community. These tags can also be organized into tag clouds, which are visual representations of the structure and organization contained implicitly within these tags. Importantly, little is known on how we use these different tagging structures to understand the content and structure of a given site. This project examines 2 different characteristics of tagging structures: font size and spatial orientation. In order to examine how these different characteristics might interact with individual differences in attentional control, a measure of working memory capacity (WMC) was included. The results showed that spatial relationships affect how well users understand the structure of a website. WMC was not shown to have any significant effect; neither was varying the font size. These results should better inform how tags and tag clouds are used on the Web, and also provide an estimation of what properties to include when designing and implementing a tag cloud on a website. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.
