Evaluation of parameters affecting the colloidal destabilization of spent vegetable tannin liquor

Barkley, William A. 08 September 2012 (has links)
The overall objective of this investigation was to develop a chemical method for treating spent vegetable tannin liquor. Vegetable tannin wastes are plagued by a multitude of undesirable characteristics, principal of which is a color problem. Historically, chemical coagulation processes have been successful in reducing color associated with industrial wastes. The coagulants tested were aluminum sulfate and polyelectrolytes. In addition, the pH and the time interval between aluminum ion and polyelegtrolyte addition were studied. Considerable difficulty was encountered in obtaining a waste product of uniform characteristics over an extended period. This problem was solved by storing a large quantity of waste of typical properties at temperatures near zero degrees centigrade. / Ph. D.

Mousses rigides et élastiques à base de tannins et d'albumine : préparation, caractérisation et modification / Rigid and elastic tannin and albumin foams : Preparation, characterization and modification

Li, Xinjun 12 June 2013 (has links)
The solid foams, because of their low density and cell structure, are commercial products with more and more interest. In recent decades, various methods for making foams based on bio-based materials have been prepared and characterized, such as lignin, starch and tannins. Because of their low cost, their resistance to compression, their high insulation and resistance to fire, tannin/furanic foams are supposed to be alternatives of phenolic foams and polyurethane in various applications. However, tannin/furanic foams are: a) lower mechanical resistant than synthetic foams such as polyurethane and phenolic foams b) potentially toxic because of formaldehyde, c) it is also interesting to prepare a foam more elastic. In this thesis, These works were carried out by four main steps: 1) Study and understanding the relationship of structure and properties of the foams. So different blowing agents, such as diethyl ether, pentane, and isocyanates and polyurethanes, were studied. 2) Carbon black, carbon nanotubes, nano clay, oligomers of hyperbranched poly (ester-amine) and pMDI were added to the formulations to improve their mechanical properties and change their cellular structures. 3) Glyoxal and glutaraldehyde have been tried to replace and prepare formaldehyde-free formaldehyde foams. 4) A new foam, albumin foam was prepared, characterized and optimized

Préparation et modification de composites thermoplastiques/tannins par extrusion réactive / Preparation and modification of thermoplastic/tannins composites via reactive extrusion

Liao, Jingjing 16 July 2019 (has links)
Condensed tannins are widely distributed and highly abundant in nature. In the past decades, such tannins have played an important role in thermosetting systems (e.g. adhesives for wood bonding, foam material) because of their chemical reactivity. However, they also exhibit great potential as a component of polymeric materials because of their physicochemical properties (e.g. antioxidant, antimicrobial and stabilizing properties), which are promising for material preparation. In order to transform tannins from traditional application to a broaden application in polymeric materials, the main challenge facing tannins are their incompatibility with hydrophobic polymer. For this purpose, three modification pathways were developed to improve the compatibility of tannins with PP or PLA matrix. In the first part, PP/ tannins were modified with hexamine or glyoxal via dynamic vulcanization technique. After vulcanized extrusion, vulcanized tannins present better compatibility and UV protective performance in PP matrix. The second approach is CTs modified with acetic anhydride. With this method, up to 30 wt% acetylated tannin (AT) can be well incorporated with PLA while PLA containing up to 20 wt% AT did not deteriorate the mechanical property and surface morphology. This PLA/AT composites are printable via fused deposition modeling process. In the third part, the efficient reactive compatibilization have been successful used to improve the interfacial adhesion between PLA and CTs by using 3-aminopropytriethoxysilane, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, and dicumyl peroxide (DCP).

Biocomposites : composites de hautes technologies en renfort de fibres naturelles et matrice de résines naturelles / Biocomposites : high technology composites of natural fibers and natural resin matrix

Kueny, Raphaël 14 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis was carried out within the LERMAB and the CETELOR and about the development of more than 98% biobased composites materials. Bast fibre type flax, hemp, kenaf and jute were selected, characterized chemically and physically. Nonwovens reinforcements are defined here as a superposition of cohesive webs products by pneumatic carding and consolidation by needling. The process we have chosen during this work allowed us to understand and to highlight the importance of the quality of the fibers on the mechanical and structural properties of the materials developed. Reinforcements made initially in a weight range from 200 to 800 g/m² in single, double or triple thicknesses have then been optimized to preserve the mechanical properties of the fibers and allow good accessibility of the impregnating resin. To limit the factors of complications, the process parameters have been limited for all fibers and composites. Fibers have been used singly or in mixtures, and impregnated by a matrix of natural tannin from mimosa and hexamine (as a hardener) or by synthetic resin of epoxy. Biocomposites with a rate of fibre mass over 50%, and density between 0.9 and 1.2 were obtained. Elasticity Modulus reach 6 GPa flexural and tensile. For strenght, averages reach 42 MPa and 75MPa respectively in tensile and bending

Development of novel flax bio-matrix composites for non-structural and structural vehicle applications

Zhu, Jinchun January 2015 (has links)
The use of natural fibres (e.g. flax, hemp etc.) instead of synthetic fibres (carbon and glass etc.) as composite reinforcements not only benefits the environment, but also provides economical lightweight products for transports. Although there are a few studies reported in literature on use of flax fibres, there is no comprehensive guide on use of flax fibres with bio-resins to re-engineer bio- composite systems that can be used in vehicle structures. The state-of-art of the current research towards using natural fibre reinforced composites is reviewed by the thesis. The review covers the performances of flax composites, concentrating on the effect of matrix types and existing development methods. The review also identifies the rational of selecting tannin resins and bio-epoxy resins to combine with flax fibre reinforcements. In the experimental work, mimosa tannin resin (natural phenolic resin) and pine- oil derived supersap epoxy resin are selected to manufacture the fully renewable flax composites. By tailoring the fibre configurations and chemical surface treatments, the resultant composites were investigated to provide information for engineers to understand the composite behaviours and properties. Mechanical properties (tension, flexural, shear, impact etc.) and physical properties (moisture, ageing etc.) were assessed through adequate tests and analysing methods. In addition, bio-sandwich structures based on the novel studied composites and commercial bio-foams were evaluated to study the energy absorption which could be very important in vehicle design. Based on the results, flax/supersap epoxy and flax/tannin composites are suitable for possible exterior structural and interior non-structural applications, respectively. The developed flax fibre composites with innovative bio-matrices have a potential to prevail in modern vehicle applications, due to the competitive performances, economic viability and environmental acceptability.

Nouveaux gels organiques et carbonés dérivés de composés phénoliques naturels et synthétiques / New organic and carbon gels derived from natural and synthetic phenolic compounds

Szczurek, Andrzej 07 November 2011 (has links)
This thesis describes new carbon gels that are much cheaper than their traditional counterparts derived from resorcinol - formaldehyde (RF) resin dried with supercritical CO2 before pyrolysis, but presenting similar features. Such result was obtained through two parallel routes: (1) the search for cheap precursors able to form chemical gels having suitable densities and mechanical properties; (2) the search for alternative drying methods, such as freeze-drying and supercritical drying with acetone or ethanol. After pyrolysis, new carbon cryogels and aerogels, respectively, were obtained. Half of the work presented here is thus based on the use of (flavonoid) mimosa tannins, which are cheap natural molecules. We show that tannins allow the preparation of highly porous carbons presenting much more versatile textural characteristics, but in some cases similar to those of materials derived from RF. The latter have a production cost five times higher than that of the tannin-based carbon aerogels reported here, which are definitely the cheapest of the market.

Efeito de aditivos alimentares sobre a produção de metano ruminal utilizando a técnica de fermentação ruminal ex situ (micro-rúmen), digestibilidade aparente total e excreção de nutrientes em bovinos / Effect of feed additives on ruminal methane production using the technique of ex situ ruminal fermentation (micro-rumen), total tract apparent digestibility of nutrients and excretion in cattle

Perna Junior, Flavio 16 December 2013 (has links)
Worldwide problem raised in the last two decades, the generation of greenhouse gases (GHG) is partly due to methane emission by ruminants. Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is the end product of the fermentation process in cattle, and as is considered a potential loss in their productive potential has been studied by nutritionists worldwide. In the search for strategies to decrease these losses, different diets, additives and nutritional management have been employed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed additives monensin or tannins on ruminal methane production in cattle evaluated by the technique of ex situ ruminal fermentation (micro-rumen), and on rumen fermentation parameters, as well as, total tract apparent digestibility and excretion of nutrients. Six ruminally cannulated cows (873 ± 81 kg) were distributed to three diets that differed on the additive used, in a replicated 3x3 Latin square experimental design (n=18 experimental units): Control (CON): no additive; Monensin (MON) addition of 300 mg of monensin per animal per day; Tannin (TAN): addition of 100 g of concentrated extract condensed tannin obtained from black wattle (Acacia mearnsii) per animal per day. Each experimental period consisted of 21 days, and between day 5 and day 15, 2 g per kg DM consumed of the marker chromic oxide was administered via rumen cannula for determination of DM and its fractions apparent digestibility as well as, excretion of nutrients. Digestibility trial consisted of two phases, the first five days for adaptation to the marker and the last five for feces sampling. The excretion of DM and nutrients, as well as, nitrogen excretion was calculated from the data of DM digestibility and its fractions. In each trial, the last 6 days were used for data collection of dry matter intake (DMI). On day 21, ruminal fluid was collected before, 3, 6, 9 and 12 h after morning feeding to determine the concentration of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) and methane (CH4). The concentration of SCFA and CH4 were determined by gas chromatography. Rumen pH was measured by a continuous measurement device for 24 hours on day 21 of each experimental period. The fermentation technique consists of ex situ incubation of penicillin flasks with liquid and solid rumen contents in water bath for 30 minutes, with subsequent measurement of methane production by gas chromatography, with final estimation of relative energy loss (REL). The REL evaluates the efficiency of feed fermentation , in other words, verifies methane loss when compared to the other fermentation products such as acetic, propionic and butyric acids. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS (Version 9.2, 2010). In the model, the effect of treatment was considered fixed and the effects of period, square, and animal within square were considered random. No significant differences (P0.05) between treatments were observed for dry matter intake, apparent digestibility and excretion of DM, CP, GE, NDF, ADF, EE, NFE, MO or P, nor TDN digestibility and N excretion. There was no significant effect (P>0.05) of additives on rumen pH, concentration of total SCFA, acetic, propionic and butyric acids, as well as, NH3- N. Monensin reduced (P<0.05) methane production by 10.7%, whereas tannin reduced by 8.0%, when compared to control treatment. Relative energy loss was significantly decreased by 20.3% and 23.8% (P=0.0387) with administration of monensin and tannin when compared to control. Therefore, the use of monensin or tannin in diets with forage to concentrate ratio of 50%, shows to be an interesting option in catlle diets aiming to improve energy efficiency in animals, not interfering on intake, digestibility and nutrient excretion with consequent reduction in methane emissions.
