Taxonomy, phylogeny, and secondary sexual character evolution of diving beetles, focusing on the genus Acilius

<p>Sexual conflict can lead to antagonistic coevolution between the sexes, but empirical examples are few. In this thesis secondary sexual characters in diving beetles are interpreted in the light of sexual conflict theory. Whether the male tarsal suction cups and female dorsal modifications are involved in a coevolutionary arms race is tested in two ways. First eight populations of a species with dimorphic females that varied in frequency of the morphs were investigated and male tarsal characteristics quantified. The frequency of female morphs is shown to be significantly correlated to the average number and size of male tarsal suction cups in the population, a prediction of the arms race hypothesis. Second, the hypothesis is tested in a phylogenetic perspective by optimizing the secondary sexual characters on a phylogeny. A full taxonomic revision of the genus <i>Acilius</i> is presented, including new synonyms, lectotype designations, geographic distributions based on more than five thousand examined museum specimens and the description of a new species from northeastern USA. Specimens of all species (except one possibly extinct that failed to be found in Yunnan, China 2000), were field collected between 2000 and 2003 in Sardinia, Sweden, Russia, Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan, New York, Maryland, California and Alberta. Three genes (CO1, H3 and Wingless) were sequenced from the fresh material as well as scoring a morphological character matrix all of which was used to derive a robust and complete hypothesis of the phylogenetic relationship in the group. The phylogeny was derived using Bayesian phylogenetics with Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques and received a posterior probability of 0.85. Changes in male and female characters turned out to be perfectly correlated across the phylogeny, providing one of the best empirical examples to date of an antagonistic arms race between the sexes in a group of organisms. Finally, a review of a pitfall to phylogenetic analysis known under the name long-branch attraction (LBA), is provided. The problem is well known theoretically but has been questioned to occur in real data, and LBA has been in the core center of the hard debate between parsimony and likelihood advocates since different inference methods vary in sensitivity to the phenomenon. Most important conclusions from the review are; LBA is very common in real data, and is most often introduced with the inclusion of outgroups that almost always provide long branches, pulling down long terminal ingroup branches towards the root. Therefore it is recommended to always run analyses with and without outgroups. Taxon sampling is very important to avoid the pitfall as well as including different kind of data, especially morphological data, i.e. many LBA-affected conclusions have recently been reached by analyses of few taxa with complete genomes. Approches taxonomique et fonctionnelle des interactions trophiques entre grands herbivores et communautés végétales dans un écosystème de montagne / Taxonomic and functional approaches of trophic interactions between large herbivores and plant communities in a mountain ecosystem

Etant donné le rôle clé des grands herbivores sur la diversité végétale spécifique et fonctionnelle, notre objectif était de mieux comprendre la relation entre l'herbivorie et les communautés végétales principalement à une échelle spatiale fine, afin de concilier des objectifs de gestions des populations et de conservation de la flore. Pour cela, nous avons abordé cette problématique en intégrant des approches taxonomiques et fonctionnelles, et en étudiant les interactions aux niveaux inter- et intra-spécifiques. Nous avons combiné les informations de trois bases de données : (1) des données de régime alimentaire issus d'analyses d'ADN metabarcoding réalisées sur des faeces de chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), chevreuil (Capreolus capreolus) et mouflons (Ovis gmelini musimon) du Massif des Bauges, (2) des données sur les caractéristiques des communautés végétales (composition floristique, biomasse, phénologie), (3) des données de traits fonctionnels des plantes. L'analyse de variabilité intra-spécifique des trois grands herbivores nous a permis de valider l'hypothèse de variation de niche (NVH) de Van Valen au niveau intra-spécifique mais aussi au niveau inter-spécifique, soit une relation positive entre la largeur de niche de l'espèce et sa variabilité intra-spécifique. Ensuite, grâce à deux populations de chamois d'alpage, l'une vivant en sympatrie avec le mouflon et l'autre vivant en allopatrie, nous avons pu mettre en évidence l'absence d'effets négatifs de la population introduite de mouflon sur le régime alimentaire de la population native de chamois, autant au niveau de la niche alimentaire taxonomique que fonctionnelle. L'analyse des critères de sélection alimentaire nous a finalement permis de mettre en avant des différences de critères de choix entre les deux espèces à certaines saisons, expliquant ainsi partiellement le partitionnement des niches taxonomiques et fonctionnelles entre les deux espèces. Par ailleurs, les scénarios proposés d'évolution de la sélection alimentaire au cours de l'année pour les deux espèces concordaient avec les caractéristiques morphologiques spécifiques à l'espèce d'ongulé. Finalement, contrairement à la littérature où aucune étude n'était capable de discriminer les effets directs et indirects des traits fonctionnels à cause de corrélations, nous avons pu, grâce à des analyses de pistes, démontrer que, dans la plupart des cas, les traits biomécaniques avaient un effet direct sur le choix alimentaire alors que les traits chimiques n'avaient qu'un effet indirect. Enfin, d'un point de vue méthodologique, nous conseillons l'utilisation d'indices d'azote fécaux uniquement dans l'étude de la variation à long terme de la qualité des régimes de manière spécifique à chaque espèce et chaque site, et non pas pour comparer des qualités de régime entre espèces ni pour étudier les variations fines à l'échelle intra-saisonnière. La complémentarité des approches nous a permis de mieux appréhender la structuration des communautés d'herbivores, et devrait nous aider à mieux évaluer l'état actuel et l'évolution des relations entre individus, entre espèces et avec leur environnement.Mots-clés : ongulés, interactions intra- et inter-spécifiques, approche taxonomique et fonctionnelle, ADN metabarcoding, NIRS, massif des Bauges, sélection alimentaire / Given the key role of large herbivores on species and functional plant diversity, we aimed at better understanding the relationship between herbivory and plant communities mainly at a fine-scale, in order to reconcile objectives of population management and plant conservation. For this purpose, we used both taxonomic and functional approaches, and studied interactions at the inter- and intra-specific levels. We combined information coming from three databases: (1) diet data from DNA-metabarcoding applied on chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon) faeces from the Bauges Massif, (2) characteristics of plant communities (plant composition, biomass, phenology), (3) plant functional traits. Analyses of intra-specific variability of the three large herbivores allowed us to upscale the niche variation hypothesis (NVH) of Van Valen from the intra- to the inter-specific level, i.e. we observed a positive relationship between the species niche breadth and among-individual variation. Then, based on two chamois subpopulations living in pastures, one living in sympatry with the mouflon and the other living in allopatry, we revealed the absence of negative effects of the introduced mouflon population on native chamois population diet, both for the taxonomic and functional dietary niche. Analyses of diet selection criteria allowed us to highlight differences in choice criteria between chamois and mouflon in some seasons, which helped to explain the taxonomic and functional niche partitioning of the two species. Furthermore, the proposed scenario of the evolution of diet selection over the year for both species were consistent with ungulate-specific morpho-physiological features. Finally, contrary to the literature where no studies could discriminate the direct and indirect effects of functional traits on diet selection because of correlations, we used path analyses, which allowed us to show that in most cases, biomechanical traits had a direct effect on diet choices, whereas chemical traits had an indirect effect. Furthermore, from a methodological point of view, we advised to use nitrogen fecal indices only to study the evolution of species-specific and location-specific population long-term diet quality, but not to compare diet quality between species, nor to study slight fluctuations at the intra-seasonal level. The complementarity of the approaches allowed us to better account for the structuration of herbivore communities, which should help to better assess the actual state and the evolution of relationships among individuals, species and their environment.Key-words: ungulates, intra- and inter-specific interactions, taxonomic and functional approach, DNA metabarcoding, NIRS, Bauges Massif, diet selection

Morphological diversity of modern and past domestic equids : complete skeletons as a marker of function and cultural practices / Diversité morphologique des équidés domestiques actuels et passés : le squelette complet comme marqueur fonctionnel et culturel

Depuis leur domestication, les équidés sont étroitement associés aux activités humaines et ont, au fil des siècles, été façonnés au gré d’exigences morphologiques, esthétiques, d’allure ou de performance. Cette sélection artificielle a fortement impacté leurs traits phénotypiques et fonctionnels, produisant le large panel des races actuelles. Les sources historiques ont abondamment décrit l’importance des équidés et la diversité de leurs usages dans les sociétés passées. Ceci interroge donc sur la potentielle existence de types morphologiques spécialisés à des périodes antérieures à l’émergence des races. Dans ce contexte, les os présentent un intérêt particulier en tant que reflet des caractéristiques morphologiques et fonctionnelles des animaux du passé. En outre, les équidés étant fréquemment retrouvés sous la forme de squelettes complets en contexte archéologique,leurs restes offrent la possibilité d’étudier l’intégralité de la morphologie squelettique et notamment les interactions entre les os. Pourtant, les restes osseux d’équidés restent relativement peu exploités, probablement en raison des limites inhérentes aux méthodes d’étude actuelles. L’objectif de ce travail est de mieux comprendre la diversité phénotypique et fonctionnelle des équidés domestiques par des approches en morphométriegéométrique. La question de leur identification spécifique est tout d’abord abordée via la recherche de critères discriminants, qualitatifs et quantitatifs, applicables à du matériel archéologique. Les patterns de covariation entre les os sont ensuite explorés afin d’aborder des questions fonctionnelles. Les résultats révèlent une forte intégration morphologique entre les os des membres chez les équidés domestiques et mettent en évidence des différences entre les races selon un axe de covariation principalement porté par des interactions fonctionnelles. Ceci tend à montrer que la sélection artificielle, considérée comme le principal acteur de la diversification morphologique chez le cheval domestique, n’influence pas seulement le phénotype mais aussi les facteurs biologiques qui le sous-tendent. Enfin, une première application à des spécimens archéologiques permet dediscuter l’impact de potentielles formes de sélection artificielle et de standardisation morphologique sur des chevaux anciens. Les résultats démontrent l’intérêt d’étudier non seulement les variations de forme des os, mais aussi leurs covariations, afin d’enrichir nos connaissances concernant les traits morphologiques et fonctionnels des animaux passés, ainsi que les pratiques d’élevage qui y sont associées. L’étude des covariations contribueégalement à accroitre notre compréhension des processus micro-évolutifs, tels que la sélection artificielle, et à travers cela, permet de mieux documenter la manière dont la diversité phénotypique est produite. / Equids and humans share a long history of interaction from the first domestication to the standardization of modern breeds. In order to suit human activities, they have been molded through selection for conformation, harmony, gaits, or performance. This artificial selection is known to have largely impacted morphological and functional traits, producing the large range of current breeds. Historical sources extensively described the widepanel of equid usage in different human civilizations, raising the issue of the potential existence of specialized morphological types in the past, prior to the emergence of modern breeds. In this respect, bones prove to be of particular interest, as an image of the phenotypic and functional characteristics of past animals. Moreover, horses being often found as complete skeletons in archaeological contexts, their remains allow for the study of the complete skeletal morphology, especially concerning the interactions between bones. However, equid bone remains are largely under-explored, probably due to the recurrent limitations inherent to existing study methods. The objective of this work is to describe and understand the phenotypic and functional diversity of domestic equids, using geometric morphometrics approaches. Identification issues are firstly addressed through the research of qualitative and quantitative discrimination criteria, applicable to archaeological samples. Next, morphological and functional questions are addressed, especially investigating bone shape covariation. The obtained results reveal strong morphological integration within equid limb bones and evidenced breed specific differences along a covariation axis largely produced by functional interactions between bones. They show thatartificial selection, regarded as responsible of most of the modern diversification of horse breeds, not only targets the phenotype but also impacts the biological factors which underlie it. Finally, a first application to archaeological skeletons allows to question the influence of potential artificial selection and morphological standardization on past horses. The results demonstrate the interest of not only exploring bone shape variation,but also covariation, to increase our knowledge about the morphological and functional traits of past equids and about the related breeding practices. The study of morphological integration may also contribute to enhance our understanding of micro-evolutionary processes, such as artificial selection on domestic taxa, and through that, gain insights into how phenotypic diversity is produced.

O gênero Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) no Brasil extra-amazônico

RESUMO – (O gênero Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) no Brasil extra-amazônico). O gênero Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) é exclusivamente americano e pertence à tribo Cestreae (Cestroideae). O Brasil extra-amazônico é formado pelos biomas Caatinga, Cerrado, Pampa, Pantanal e Mata Atlântica, sendo este último o bioma com a maior diversidade específica do gênero. A necessidade de uma revisão taxonômica para as espécies de Cestrum, ocorrentes nesta área, motivou a realização deste trabalho, visando o reconhecimento e identificação das mesmas. Para o Brasil extraamazônico são reconhecidas 25 espécies nativas de Cestrum, C. axillare Vell., C. bracteatum Link & Otto, C. corcovadense Miers, C. corymbosum Schltdl., C. euanthes Schltdl., C. gardneri Sendtn., C. intermedium Sendtn., C. latifolium Lam., C. mariquitense Kunth, C. martii Sendtn., C. obovatum Sendtn., C. parqui L’Hér., C. pedicellatum Sendtn., C. reflexum Sendtn., C. retrofractum Dunal, C. salzmannii Dunal, C. schlechtendalii G. Don, C. strictum Schott ex Sendtn., C. strigilatum Ruiz & Pav., C. subpulverulentum Mart., C. subumbellatum Vignoli-Silva & M. Nee, C. tenuifolium Francey, C. tubulosum Sendtn., C. velutinum Hiern e C. viminale Sendtn. As características do indumento, das nervuras secundárias das folhas, das pseudoestípulas, das inflorescências, dos hipsofilos, do cálice, da corola e dos grãos de pólen são relevantes para a identificação das espécies. São apresentadas chaves analíticas para as espécies nativas e duas cultivadas (C. diurnum L. e C. nocturnum L.), descrições para o gênero e para as espécies nativas, discussões sobre a morfologia das espécies, hábitat e distribuição geográfica, além de comentários, ilustrações e material examinado. São propostos 79 lectotipificações, quatro neotipificações, uma epitipificação, um nome novo e 57 novos sinônimos. Os dados sobre a revisão nomenclatural dos nomes de espécies citados para o Brasil extra-amazônico, assim como sobre a morfologia polínica de 23 espécies nativas são apresentados e discutidos detalhadamente. O estudo polínico permite concluir que os táxons estudados apresentam certa heterogeneidade polínica quanto à forma, aos atributos das aberturas e à ornamentação da sexina, o que possibilita identificar palinologicamente as espécies. / (The genus Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) in extra-Amazonian Brazil). The genus Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) occurs only in America and belongs to the tribe Cestreae (Cestroideae). The extra-Amazonian Brazil is formed by the biomas “Caatinga”, “Cerrado”, “Pampa”, “Pantanal” and “Mata Atlântica”, being this last the bioma with the biggest of specific Cestrum richness. The goal of this paper is to provide a taxonomic review that allows the recognition and identification of the extra-Amazonian Brazilian species. This study presents an analytical keys for native species and for two cultivated ones (C. diurnum L. and C. nocturnum L.), descriptions for the genus and the native species, discussion on the species morphology, habitat and geographic distribution, as well as commentaries, illustrations and a list of the examined material. are proposed 79 lectotypifications, four neotypifications, a epitypification, a new name and 57 new synonymous. The data about nomenclatural revision of the species names cited for extra-Amazonian Brazil, along with a pollinic morphology of 23 native species, is presented and discussed in detail. The polynic study confirm that the taxa presents some pollinic heterogeneity in the form, attributes of aperture and sexine ornamentation which can be used in the genus taxonomy.

Estudos biossistemáticos em espécies de Habenaria (Orchidaceae) nativas no Rio Grande do Sul

Habenaria é um dos maiores gêneros da família Orchidaceae, e estimativas atuais pressupoem a existência de aproximadamente 835 espécies. Habenaria seção Pentadactylae com 34 espécies é a maior entre as 14 seções do gênero existente no novo mundo e compreende um conjunto de espécies morfologicamente bastante heterogênea. A fim de investigar a monofilia da seção e sua relação com outras seções do gênero, foram executadas análise Bayesiana e de Máxima Parcimônia com o emprego de um marcador nuclear (ITS) e três marcadores plastidiais (matK, intron trnK, rps16-trnk). Os resultados demonstraram que a seção Pentadactylae é altamente polifilética. Baseado nas análises filogenéticas e reavaliação de caracteres morfológicos, a seção Pentadactylae foi recircunscrita neste trabalho e sete espécies são aceitas: H. dutraei, H. ekmaniana, H. exaltata, H. henscheniana, H. megapotamensis, H. montevidensis e H. pentadactyla, enquanto outras 32 espécies foram excluídas. Habenaria crassipes é reconhecida como um sinônimo de H. exaltata. Lectótipos são designados para H. crassipes e H. recta. Todas as espécies da seção habitam pântanos ou locais bastante úmidos; com área de distribuição passando pelo norte da Argentina, Uruguai, Paraguai, sul, sudeste e centro do Brasil. O estado do Rio Grande do Sul (sul do Brasil), possivelmente, constitui um centro de diversidade da seção onde todas as espécies podem ser encontradas. A biologia reprodutiva de duas espécies da seção Pentadactylae, H. megapotamensis e H. montevidensis; e duas espécies da seção Macroceratitae, H. johannensis e H. macronectar, foram estudas. Todas as espécies estudadas oferecem néctar como recompensa floral aos polinizadores, produzido no interior de um prolongamento do labelo denominado esporão. Habenaria montevidensis é polinizada por borboletas da família Hesperiidae, enquanto as demais espécies são polinizadas por mariposas da família Sphingidae. Todas as espécies estudadas são auto-compatíveis mas dependentes de agentes polinizadores para a produção de frutos. O sucesso reprodutivo é alto (69,48 - 93%). Na área de estudo, todas as quatro espécies estudadas são reprodutivamente isoladas devido a um conjunto de fatores tais como diferenças na morfologia floral e diferentes polinizadores. / Habenaria is one of the largest genus of Orchidaceae family and current stimates accounts to the existence of 835 species. Habenaria section Pentadactylae with 34 species is the largest among the 14 New World sections of the genus and comprises a morphologically heterogeneous group of species. To investigate the monophyly of the section and the relation with other sections of the genus, Bayesian and parsimony analyses using one nuclear marker (ITS) and three plastid markers (matK, trnK intron, rps16-trnK) were performed. The results demonstrated that sect. Pentadactylae is highly polyphyletic. Based on the phylogenetic analyses and re-evaluation of morphological characters, Habenaria sect. Pentadactylae is re-circumscribed and seven species are accepted for the section: H. dutraei, H. ekmaniana, H. exaltata, H. henscheniana, H. megapotamensis, H. montevidensis and H. pentadactyla, while other 32 species were excluded. Habenaria crassipes is included under the synonym of H. exaltata. Lectotypes are designated for H. crassipes and H. recta. All species in the section are from marshes or wet grasslands and range from Northern Argentina, Uruguai, Paraguai and south, southeast and center of Brazil. The Rio Grande do Sul state (south Brazil), possibly constitute a diversity center of the section where every species can be founded. Most are rare, known by few populations, and threatened due to loss of habitat and population decline. The reproductive biology of two species from the section Pentadactylae, H. megapotamensis and H. montevidensis; and two species from the section Macroceratitae, H. johannensis and H. macronectar, were studied. All studied species offer nectar as floral reward concealed in a labellar process termed spur. Habenaria montevidensis is pollinated by Hesperiidae butterflies, while the remaining species are pollinated by Sphingidae moths. All studied species are self-compatible, but pollinator-dependent. The reproductive success is high (69.48 - 93%). A diversidade de algas e cianobactérias em ambientes terrestres é ainda pobremente conhecida em regiões tropicais, e no Brasil existem apenas alguns poucos trabalhos abordando estes organismos. O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi contribuir com o conhecimento taxonômico das comunidades aerofíticas através do levantamento dos seus principais componentes encontrados em florestas estacionais semideciduais no noroeste do estado de São Paulo. Adicionalmente, este estudo também visou o levantamento de dados sobre a riqueza e abundância destes organismos nos fragmentos, a comparação da estrutura das comunidades e a avaliação das possíveis relações entre os parâmetros bióticos (riqueza, abundância e diversidade) e características ambientais (tamanho do fragmento, cobertura do dossel, umidade, pH e temperatura) que determinam a distribuição geográfica. O levantamento foi realizado em dez remanescentes florestais (quatro com área total entre 50 e 150ha e seis com área total maior que 200ha). 30 árvores (substrato potencial para crescimento epífita) aleatoriamente escolhidas foram analisadas em cada fragmento em três alturas pré-estabelecidas (50cm, 100cm e 150cm) quanto à presença/ausência e abundância (cobertura percentual) de crescimentos algais. Dados de temperatura, umidade relativa do ar e pH do substrato (casca) foram também coletados. Além do levantamento taxonômico, as áreas foram caracterizadas e comparadas através de suas diversidades alfa e beta, uniformidade da distribuição de espécies (equitabilidade) e dominância, enquanto análises de similaridade foram conduzidas utilizando-se os coeficientes de Jaccard e Bray-Curtis. The algal and cyanobacterial diversity is still poorly known and in Brazil there are only some few works dealing with these organisms. The main objective of this work was to contribute with the taxonomic knowledge of the aerophytic epiphytic communities through the survey of the main components of these assemblages found in fragments of seasonal semidecidual forest in northwestern São Paulo State. In addition, this study also aimed to the assessment of richness and abundance of the organisms in the fragments, the comparison of the structure of the communities and the evaluation of the possible relationships among biotic parameters (richness, abundance and species diversity) and environmental characteristics (fragment size, canopy cover, humidity, pH and temperature) that determine geographical distribution. The survey was conducted in ten forest reminiscents (four with total area from 50 to 150ha and six with total area higher than 200ha). 30 trees (potential substratum for epiphytic growth) randomly found were analyzed in each fragment in three prefixed highs (50cm, 100cm and 150cm) for presence/absence and abundance (percentage cover) of algal growths. A comunidade zooplanctônica de rios amazônicos na área de influência da Usina Hidrelétrica de Santo Antônio do Madeira, RO: diferentes abordagens no monitoramento

Among these are those of ecological importance, to promote the conservation and maintenance of natural resources of the region. It was intended to, in this study, analyze the structure of the zooplankton community and its spatial distribution and temporal patterns on the Madeira River and tributaries in the area of influence of the Santo Antônio HPP, before, during and after their deployment, to verify the occurrence possible changes. Quarterly samplings were carried out for four years for the physical and chemical variables and zooplankton. The zooplankton community structure varied widely depending on the hydrological events, but was little changed after filling the reservoir probably because the HPP be of the run-of-river type. Changes in the density of zooplankton were lower than those observed in large accumulation reservoir previously built in the Amazon. However there have been changes in the proportions of biomass of different zooplankton groups. Whereas the functional approach, in all analyzed rivers was observed that before the filling had greater selection of r strategists and smaller species and after filling greater numbers of functional groups coexisted. In relation to the components of diversity, greater evenness values were recorded in the last years of sampling. For other functional and taxonomic indices (richness, Shannon, FDis and FEev), differences related to impoundment on the Madeira River were not verified. Considering the approach of surrogates, the amounts recorded for analysis of concordance between the zooplankton community groups and also among the taxonomic classification levels were low significance, which prevents them from being used separately in biomonitoring studies in the region. We conclude that the Madeira River and its tributaries have high zooplankton diversity and until the moment the changes in the community were low, presumably by maintaining the short residence time. The results show that different approaches, both functional as taxonomic, evaluated together, can be a great step toward understanding the relationship between environmental standards, management practices and production of ecosystem services. / O crescente interesse mundial pela região Amazônica tem levantado diversas questões, dentre elas as de importância ecológica, visando a conservação e manutenção dos recursos naturais da região. Pretendeu-se, no presente estudo, analisar a estrutura da comunidade zooplanctônica e seus padrões de distribuição espacial e temporal no rio Madeira e tributários na área de influência da UHE de Santo Antônio, antes, durante e após a sua implantação, visando verificar a ocorrência de possíveis alterações. Foram realizadas amostragens trimestrais durante o período de 2009 a 2013, para as variáveis físicas, químicas e do zooplâncton. A estrutura da comunidade variou amplamente em função dos eventos hidrológicos, mas foi pouco alterada após o enchimento do reservatório provavelmente pelo fato da usina ser do tipo fio d água. As mudanças na densidade do zooplâncton foram menores do que as observadas nos grandes reservatórios de acumulação anteriormente construídos na Amazônia. Contudo ocorreram mudanças nas proporções da biomassa dos diferentes grupos zooplanctônicos. Considerando a abordagem funcional, em todos os rios analisados observou-se que durante a fase pré-enchimento havia maior seleção de espécies r estrategistas e de menor tamanho e que após o enchimento um maior número de grupos funcionais coexistiu. Em relação aos componentes da diversidade, maiores valores de equitabilidade foram registrados nos últimos anos de amostragem. Para os demais índices funcionais e taxonômicos (riqueza, Shannon, FDis e FEev), diferenças relacionadas ao barramento do rio Madeira não foram verificadas. Pela abordagem de grupos substitutos, os valores de concordância obtidos entre os grupos zooplanctônicos e também entre os níveis de classificação taxonômica foram de baixa significância, o que impede que estes possam ser usados separadamente no biomonitoramento da região. Conclui-se que o rio Madeira e seus tributários estudados detêm elevada diversidade zooplanctônica e que até o momento as alterações na comunidade foram baixas, provavelmente pela manutenção do curto tempo de residência. Os resultados mostram que diferentes abordagens, tanto funcionais como taxonômicas, avaliadas em conjunto, podem constituir uma ferramenta valiosa em direção à compreensão da relação entre padrões ecológicos, práticas de manejo e produção de serviços ecossistêmicos.

O gênero Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) no Brasil extra-amazônico

RESUMO – (O gênero Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) no Brasil extra-amazônico). O gênero Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) é exclusivamente americano e pertence à tribo Cestreae (Cestroideae). O Brasil extra-amazônico é formado pelos biomas Caatinga, Cerrado, Pampa, Pantanal e Mata Atlântica, sendo este último o bioma com a maior diversidade específica do gênero. A necessidade de uma revisão taxonômica para as espécies de Cestrum, ocorrentes nesta área, motivou a realização deste trabalho, visando o reconhecimento e identificação das mesmas. Para o Brasil extraamazônico são reconhecidas 25 espécies nativas de Cestrum, C. axillare Vell., C. bracteatum Link & Otto, C. corcovadense Miers, C. corymbosum Schltdl., C. euanthes Schltdl., C. gardneri Sendtn., C. intermedium Sendtn., C. latifolium Lam., C. mariquitense Kunth, C. martii Sendtn., C. obovatum Sendtn., C. parqui L’Hér., C. pedicellatum Sendtn., C. reflexum Sendtn., C. retrofractum Dunal, C. salzmannii Dunal, C. schlechtendalii G. Don, C. strictum Schott ex Sendtn., C. strigilatum Ruiz & Pav., C. subpulverulentum Mart., C. subumbellatum Vignoli-Silva & M. Nee, C. tenuifolium Francey, C. tubulosum Sendtn., C. velutinum Hiern e C. viminale Sendtn. As características do indumento, das nervuras secundárias das folhas, das pseudoestípulas, das inflorescências, dos hipsofilos, do cálice, da corola e dos grãos de pólen são relevantes para a identificação das espécies. São apresentadas chaves analíticas para as espécies nativas e duas cultivadas (C. diurnum L. e C. nocturnum L.), descrições para o gênero e para as espécies nativas, discussões sobre a morfologia das espécies, hábitat e distribuição geográfica, além de comentários, ilustrações e material examinado. São propostos 79 lectotipificações, quatro neotipificações, uma epitipificação, um nome novo e 57 novos sinônimos. Os dados sobre a revisão nomenclatural dos nomes de espécies citados para o Brasil extra-amazônico, assim como sobre a morfologia polínica de 23 espécies nativas são apresentados e discutidos detalhadamente. O estudo polínico permite concluir que os táxons estudados apresentam certa heterogeneidade polínica quanto à forma, aos atributos das aberturas e à ornamentação da sexina, o que possibilita identificar palinologicamente as espécies. / (The genus Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) in extra-Amazonian Brazil). The genus Cestrum L. (Solanaceae) occurs only in America and belongs to the tribe Cestreae (Cestroideae). The extra-Amazonian Brazil is formed by the biomas “Caatinga”, “Cerrado”, “Pampa”, “Pantanal” and “Mata Atlântica”, being this last the bioma with the biggest of specific Cestrum richness. The goal of this paper is to provide a taxonomic review that allows the recognition and identification of the extra-Amazonian Brazilian species. This study presents an analytical keys for native species and for two cultivated ones (C. diurnum L. and C. nocturnum L.), descriptions for the genus and the native species, discussion on the species morphology, habitat and geographic distribution, as well as commentaries, illustrations and a list of the examined material. are proposed 79 lectotypifications, four neotypifications, a epitypification, a new name and 57 new synonymous. The data about nomenclatural revision of the species names cited for extra-Amazonian Brazil, along with a pollinic morphology of 23 native species, is presented and discussed in detail. The polynic study confirm that the taxa presents some pollinic heterogeneity in the form, attributes of aperture and sexine ornamentation which can be used in the genus taxonomy.
