Constructing Citizenship Through National Security: An Analysis of Bill C-24 - Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act and Bill C-51 - Anti-Terrorism Act

Garneau, Brianna 12 December 2018 (has links)
The colonial formation and imagination of the Canadian nation and its citizenry has historically been rooted in processes of racial inclusion and exclusion. This thesis considers the ways in which the historical exclusionary process of citizenship manifests within today’s “War on Terror” through the language of national security. The analysis focuses on the discourses of two former Conservative bills: Bill C-24 – Strengthening the Canadian Citizenship Act and Bill C-51 – Anti-terrorism Act. Mobilized through a critical race perspective, my thesis documents first, the narratives that are told, and second, the discursive strategies that are used, to construct those deserving and undeserving of inclusion. My findings demonstrate that the ideal nation and its ideal citizens, who are deserving of inclusion within the nation, are fundamentally constructed in Whiteness. Meanwhile, the threatening ‘Other’, who is to be excluded and expelled from the nation, is imagined as a racialized Muslim, Arab and brown terrorist in the “War on Terror”. By examining their respective parliamentary debates, my research reveals how the political discourses utilized in both bills uphold the racial exclusionary mechanisms of citizenship. As such, my research speaks to the evolving relationship between citizenship, national security, surveillance, and securitization by demonstrating how citizenship is used as a tool within the broader security regime of the state to fight the “War on Terror”.

Linhares, Lívia Botelho January 2017 (has links)
This paper tests, through the copulas methodology, the hypothesis of financial contagion between the individual Brazilian stocks and the market indices of the countries where the crises were originated. The crises analyzed are the Terror crisis in 2001, the Argentina’s crisis in 2001, the Subprime crisis in 2007 and the Sovereign Debt crisis in 2009. In addition to this, the Brazilian economic sectors are examined in order to find out which were most affected by each crisis. The tests of the Terror crisis presented evidence of SP500 contagion to 24 Brazilian stocks, affecting, mainly, sectors related to industry and energy. The Argentina’s crisis and the European Sovereign Debt crisis presented contagion’s evidence of the Merval and Athex indices for only 3 Brazilian companies. The Subprimes crisis presented evidence of SP500 contagion for 35 Brazilian companies, mostly related to the financial, energy and industrial sectors. 7 Brazilian stocks were affected by both American crises. The results reinforce the importance of contagion analysis in each individual company, rather than using the Brazilian market index.

The representation of the Iraq War in selected Anglo-American and Iraqi novels

Mohammed, Pshtiwan Faraj January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores representation of the Iraq War in selected Anglo-American and Iraqi novels, examining how several authors have employed this theme in their narratives. The featured novelists are chosen from many writers who focus their efforts and their writing on this conflict. Criterion for selection included offering a critique of the diverse perspectives from which the conflict was perceived, the texts‘ engagement with the political conundrums underpinning war and its approach, how such fiction engages with a contemporary audience and what perspective are deployed to do so. Their public visibility provides the basis of one interpretative strand of the thesis. This study also explores and conceptualises how this conflict has entered the cultural consciousness and to what degree the novels fictionalise the conflict as their main subject, and assesses through which thematic emphases. The texts chosen and to be analysed are pivotal to our understanding of contemporary Iraq and its recent history. It will be argued that the thematic content of these texts contextualise modern war‘s multiple effects within not only the fictional textual world, but as well as their imaginative characters these representations become part of the experience at least vicariously of the audiences who read them. The texts discussed in subsequent chapters are either originally written in, or translated into English (for publication), and therefore all available in English, one major criterion of textual selection. It is interesting to examine the theme of the Iraq War and the historical and pragmatic vein and cultural point of reference from which authors write and has come to dominate the discourse of some contemporary novelists. The goal is to critically explore how the war has become a focal point and the framework of their narratives. The thesis will attempt to analyse how such novels depict the effects of political violence and why they are drawn to powerfully articulate the gruelling reality and experience of those fictionally engaged by and/or affected by it. It will be proposed that novels of and about this conflict are essential to study, understand, and engage with because of the content and the message they attempt to convey which is so crucial to understanding contemporary faultiness in socio-cultural histories, and the critical themes they utilize in writing and the dynamics through which they fictionalize their stories. Such fictional representations of this war serve an important societal, cultural, aesthetic and symbolic function. Thus the study encapsulates how novels of and about the Iraq War reveal and recapture the physical, psychological, and interpersonal losses that are felt by the civilians and military alike.

The purpose of this is to reflect on the thinking of death in contemporary society through film production , considering they provide guides for action and reflection . Despite the theme of fear and death is present in many genres , he is essentially addressed in terror, thus films commercial appeal , the horror genre that are analyzed as narratives that address the fear of death were selected , how to deal with this fear and the relationship with the company that produced it and with which it communicated . Reflections directed to the understanding that despite scientific findings that tend to put the spotlight on religious teachings regarding life and therefore death , the contemporary Western imagination remains grounded in religion , especially the Christian beliefs , which are updated and remodelas by scientific theories and technological advances .

Given the multiplicity of languages and media present in contemporary texts, the work with digital genres characterizes itself as essential for teaching, reading and writing. Virtual media is already present in many dayly activities that require the use of language. This shows that the globalized world brings new demands of literacy and various reading practices. Given this perspective, we propose to work the multiliteracies present in the new texts from the enunciative discourse Bakhtinian assumptions. For this, we chose to be as the object of research / intervention, the horror flash fiction multimodal discursive genre, because it is a multissemi?tico digital statement of virtual circulation. In this context, this study aimed to understand how the teaching of this kind can contribute to the development of knowledge related to reading and text production, required by multiliteracies, by performing a Didactic Sequence in the classroom, specifically for two classes of elementary school, 7th and 8th grades of public school. The research was based on Bakhtin's theory and the Circle (2009, 2011) on gender perspective in a dialogic and the proposed Dolz and Schneuwly (2004) for the text of teaching through sequences Teaching. We also use the precepts of multiliteracies focused on Rojo (2012, 2013). The methodology used was based on a qualitative approach. We consider the analysis of minicontos produced by students, it's own hibridism of multiliteracies, the discursive characteristics such as composition, style and subject content, in addition to relations dialogicity present in these statements. At the end of the study, we realized that our intervention contributed to the expansion of knowledge of the subjects involved related to reading and multimodal genre production.

The anti-terrorist fighting in Peru: legal black holes, gray holes and the arduous constitutional way. Peruvian lessons for the war on global terrorism / La lucha antiterrorista en el Perú: agujeros negros legales, agujeros grises y el arduo camino constitucional.

Siles Vallejos, Abraham 10 April 2018 (has links)
This paper examines the anti-terrorist strategy developed by Peru from the paradigm of the constitutional rule of law. One expression of this counter-insurgency fight was the nearly permanent establishment of states of emergency and the adoption of criminal emergency laws, which are critically analyzed, because they led to serious results on fundamental rights. In that sense, it is shown, with severe concern, the establishment by the Peruvian Government of legal “black holes” and “gray holes” at the expense of victims of enforced disappearance. The author concludes by assessing the position of the courts and the challenge they have in elaborating a democratic and constitutional model for combating terrorism.

Les communautés grecques en URSS (1917-1956) et les questions du genre / The Greek communities of the Soviet Union (1917-1956) and the gender question

Kataiftsis, Dimitris 06 December 2014 (has links)
In order to form our hypothesis, it would be necessary to examine the scientific discourse on gender and its application to the greek case, and this is what we tried to do in our introduction. Our study was organized in five large parts. The first one approaches the formation of greek diaspora from the end of the 18th century to the revolutions of 1917 and the woman representation in pontic-greek historiography. The second one approaches the access of women in education, the ways of integration in the new soviet society. The preservation of the cultural roles leads us to develop a typology between “greek” women and “soviet” women. The third part focuses on the reformation or disappearance of the roles during political repressions that would have an impact on greek diaspora. Furthermore, we discussed on the women-victims of purges. Finally, the last part demonstrates that the exile constituted a rupture with the past, at least as it resulted from its protagonists’ oral testimonies. The women who talked about themselves and the men surveyed on gender issues give us an original image of the past, worthy of interest.
