This research addresses the relationship between education, body and culture through the study and observation of the elderly from Associação Brasileira de Práticas Corporais Chinesas (ABPCC) in the practice of Tai Chi Chuan. The main goal is to show, considering the life course of some members of the group, that the body incorporates knowledge and learnings triggered by culture and, once brought to light by the practice of this martial art, they promote changes not only related to health - as sometimes they are exclusively considered through a reductionist perspective of researchers in gerontology. The changes are also cognitive, social, psychological, economic, affective etc. Thus, our approach is epistemologically supported by the multidimensional interweaving of the phenomenon in the light of transdisciplinarity, the complex thought and the paradigmatic proposition of the "third included". The methodological approach adopted is qualitative-descriptive of ethnographic character. Data were gathered from participant observation and unstructured interviews. Once the turning points were identified in the life course of the elderly, it was possible to understand such changes within a line that divides - and also dialogues-, a "before" and an "after", recursively, in terms of benefits to the life of the elderly with the practice of Tai Chi Chuan. We used the discourse analysis technique in individual and group interviews. We hope that this work contributes to the deepening of the multidimensional understanding of the body experience, its reflections on aging and its developments, to the detriment of the dualistic, fragmented and overly specialized approach that marks modern science as to dealing with the knowledge and the learning acquired and produced in old age.

Pretorius, Tyrone Brian January 1987 (has links)
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / The aim of the present study was to determine whether church involvement can be conceptualized as a function of both organizational and personal factors. For the purposes of this study the psychosocial climate of the church served as an organizational factor while religious attitudes served as personal factors. A further aim of the study was to determine to what extent the church can be seen as a support system that serves as a buffer against stressors. Subjects consisted of 214 congregation members of 10 different churches that were spread out over the areas of Bellville-South, Kuilsriver and Belhar in the Cape Peninsula. Subjects completed five questionnaires: the Church climate scale (CCS), the Involvement in the church scale (ICS), the Survey of religious attitudes (SRA), a psychological well-being questionaire (RIF) and a biographical questionnaire. The relationship between the different variables were determined by means of product moment correlations, stepwise multiple regression and Chi-square analyses. The analysis of the significance of the differences between more involved and less involved church members was performed by means of Rotelling's T2 statistic. It was found that, according to the psychometric measures applied: the dimensions of the psychosocial climate of the church plays a limited role in the prediction of church insignificance as a predictor of church involvement in the final multiple regression analysis which involved all independent variables simultaneously. Orthodox religious beliefs had a positive relationship with church involvement, while inner religious conflicts had a negative relationship with church involvement. there was no relationship between church involvement and psychological well-being. orthodoxy, income, normative clarity and educational qualifications were the only significant predictors of church involvement. more involved and less involved members differed significantly and the difference between the two groups can be attributed to orthodoxy of religious beliefs. Although the results of the main investigation did not fully confirm the researcher's expectations, the intercorrelations between the different variables produced a number of interesting findings. The Church climate scale produced the following significant correlations with the other variables: ( i) "Normative clarity" correlated negatively with the experience of inner religious conflicts as well as the experience of anxiety, depression and global psychological well-being. It however correlated positively with educational qualifications. Chi-square analyses further showed that married persons, received a high level church. compared to unmarried per the persons, of "normative clarity" within "Sense of community" correlated positively with the level of religious orthodoxy and negatively with the experience of anxiety. (iii)"Social concern correlated positively with the level of religious orthodoxy as well as with sex (men percieved a higher level of social concern within the church than women) . (iv) "Openness to change" correlated positively with the level of religious orthodoxy as well as with sex (men percieved a higher level of social concern within the church than women)

The Chi Square Approximation to the Hypergeometric Probability Distribution

Anderson, Randy J. (Randy Jay) 08 1900 (has links)
This study compared the results of his chi square text of independence and the corrected chi square statistic against Fisher's exact probability test (the hypergeometric distribution) in contection with sampling from a finite population. Data were collected by advancing the minimum call size from zero to a maximum which resulted in a tail area probability of 20 percent for sample sizes from 10 to 100 by varying increments. Analysis of the data supported the rejection of the null hypotheses regarding the general rule-of-thumb guidelines concerning sample size, minimum cell expected frequency and the continuity correction factor. it was discovered that the computation using Yates' correction factor resulted in values which were so overly conservative (i.e. tail area porobabilities that were 20 to 50 percent higher than Fisher's exact test) that conclusions drawn from this calculation might prove to be inaccurate. Accordingly, a new correction factor was proposed which eliminated much of this discrepancy. Its performance was equally consistent with that of the uncorrected chi square statistic and at times, even better.

Methods of Statistical Analysis for Interaction and Main Effects Contributing to an All or Nothing Trait

Fyon, Carolyn 10 1900 (has links)
An analysis of the presence or absence of black melanin in broiler chickens as affected by the presence of different traits is studied in the following project. The purpose of this analysis is to show that the simple partitioning of chi-square method is as good as any method. This project also shows the equivalence of different statistical methods. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

A simulation study of the size and power of Cochran’s Q versus the standard Chi-square test for testing the equality of correlated proportions

Gayle, Suelen S. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Statistics / Paul I. Nelson / The standard Chi-square test for the equality of proportions of positive responses to c specified binary questions is valid when the observed responses arise from independent random samples of units. When the responses to all c questions are recorded on the same unit, a situation called correlated proportions, the assumptions under which this test is derived are no longer valid. Under the additional assumption of compound symmetry, the Cochran-Q test is a valid test for the equality of proportions of positive responses. The purpose of this report is to use simulation to examine and compare the performance of the Cochran-Q test and the standard Chisquare test when testing for the equality of correlated proportions. It is found that the Cochran-Q test is superior to the Chi-square test in terms of size and power, especially when the common correlation among the binary responses is large.

Selecting a pricing strategy : a statistical approach

Smit, L., Van Niekerk, T. January 2014 (has links)
Published Article / Pricing management, as part of the marketing strategy of an organisation, is a difficult and highly complex - but also critically important - management activity, as it affects the revenue and therefore the profits of an organisation. However, scholars such as Bruck (2010), Cram (2006:5), Eugster, Kakkar and Roegner (2000:133), Hinterhuber (2004:765) and Pratt (2007) believe that the pricing function in organisations has largely been neglected by managers and academics and that price is generally set by guesswork and not by scientific means. This article maintains that the pricing function in an organisation can be successfully managed through the implementation of a pricing plan. A critically important step in the pricing plan is to select a pricing strategy or combination of pricing strategies to set the price of a product or service. A number of nonparametric statistical tests are available to assist management in the selection of the most suitable pricing strategy, or combination of pricing strategies, when determining the price of a product or service. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the use of statistical methods in selecting a pricing strategy as part of a comprehensive pricing plan. The article contains an analysis of selected literature, while taking a descriptive and statistical approach to demonstrate the use of statistical methods in selecting a pricing strategy.

Bursts identification in water distribution systems

Borovik, Irina January 2009 (has links)
The presented thesis investigates the identification of burst locations in water distribution systems (WDS) by analysis of field and simulation experimental data. This required the development of a new hybrid method of burst detection and sizing, and also a burst location identification algorithm. Generally, existing practice relies on a combination of some simple procedure and experience of the involved staff and cannot be easily automated. The practical methods are based on direct manifestation of burst on the surface or on systematically surveying suspected areas e.g. by using listening sticks, such methods are very time consuming. The proposed burst location algorithm is based on comparing data by means of statistical analysis of field data with results of water network simulation. An extended network hydraulic simulator is used to model pressure dependent leakage terms. The presence of a burst changes the flow pattern and also pressure at network nodes which may be used to estimate the burst size and its location. The influence of such random factors as demand flows and background leakage on the process of burst detection is also considered. The field data is from a generalised fixed area and variable area (FAVOR) test where inlet pressure is being stepped up and down and the following variables are measured: inlet flow, inlet pressure (head) and pressure at a number of selected sensitive nodes. The method has three stages and uses two different models, one is inlet flow model (IFM) to represent the total inlet flow and another is the extended hydraulic model to simulate different burst locations. Initially the presence of a potential burst is investigated. If this is confirmed precise values of the demand, background leakage flow and burst flow in IFM are subsequently estimated. They are used to identify the burst site at the third stage of the method. The method can be easily adapted for practical use. It requires data from experiments carried out at night between 1am and 5am and involves placing typically about 20 temporary loggers to collect the measurements during this period. It also requires the availability of a hydraulic model which normally is in the possession of a water company. The program has been implemented in the Matlab package and is easy to use. The current methodology is tuned to identify a single burst but can be generalised to identify locations of multiple bursts.

Dirigering : en undersökning om hur Tai Chi och imitationer av andra dirigenter kan utveckla kroppsmedvetenhet och gestik

Fahlén, Karin January 2019 (has links)
