No. of bitstreams: 1 Diego Vieira Braga.pdf: 1027045 bytes, checksum: b3ff02805d860c2bfb5c3539ada693b9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-12-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES# / #2075167498588264571# / #600 / In the present study, which was based on the Pêcheuxtian theoretical framework of Discourse Analysis, language facts were examined in relation to the production of meaning about organizers and organization of work in an institutional report on preparations for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These facts are recognized as forms of excess based on the theoretical-methodological systematization of Ernst-Pereira (2009), but problematized in terms of the discursive functioning that this reflection entails. Therefore, it is proposed that excess, which in its expected functioning concerns the stabilization of meanings and establishment of the relevance of interdiscursive knowledge, may also produce instability. With diachronic preoccupation, the study was conducted through the configuration of a theoretical construct called “Discourse of Organization of the Rio 2016 Games” (DO 2016) and the analysis of discursive sequences taken from a corpus file consisting of formulations of the president of the organizing committee during the preparation period (2009-2016). Working with the premise that interpretations made about Brazil have implications in the interpretation of organizational work, it can be argued that excess consists in material effect of the way in which circumstantial and socio-historical tensions permeate the “Discursive Formation of Organization” (DFO), a place of significance from which the organizer in question constitutes the subject of DO 2016, and that is established through the historic event of the selection of Rio de Janeiro as the host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The circumstantial tensions result from domestic structural alternations in the period; the socio-historic tensions stem from the discrepancy between the depreciative meanings which constitute a imaginary about Brazil and those that the organizers claim for positively signifying the work carried out and, directly or indirectly, (re)signifying the country. Therefore, on its stabilizing side, excess indicates a preserved interpretation of undesirable associations with unfavorable meanings due to structural oscillations and with those that were formed historically and today prevail in social imaginary. However, the formation of unstable accumulation points (PÊCHEUX apud MALDIDIER, 2003) in the way that the enunciating subject is represented, through recurrence of employing the first-person plural, and the way in which organizational work is represented, through continuities and discontinuities in the production of lexical-syntactic expansions and hesitations and generic reformulations in relation to certain signifiers. In the first case, excess destabilizes the effects of homogeneity of voices and socialization of the responsibility for the organization of events; in the second, it affects the structuring/regularization of another network of enunciations that function as discursive memory. The study indicates that imaginary support, through excesses, of the conceptual consistency of a position-subject in the face of tensions that constitute and affect the configuration of a discursive formation can inadvertently produce an internal instability in the discursive work with the meanings.

From State Exposition Building to Science Center: Changing Ideals of Progress in Los Angeles, 1873-1992

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Los Angeles long served as a center of technological and scientific innovation and production, from nineteenth-century agriculture to twentieth-century aerospace. City boosters used spectacle-filled promotional strategies to build and maintain technological supremacy through industry. Evaluating the city’s premier industry-focused science museum, the California Science Center, is therefore a must. The California Science Center is one of the most-visited museums in the United States and is in the historic Exposition Park. Yet, no thorough analysis has been done on its influential history. This dissertation is an interdisciplinary study of the California Science Center, from its 1870s beginnings as an agricultural fairground, to the construction of the world’s fair-inspired State Exposition Building in the 1910s, to its post-World War II redesign as the California Museum of Science and Industry. It uses regional history, design history, and museum studies to evaluate the people behind the museum’s construction and development, how they shaped exhibits, and the ideologies of progress they presented to the public. This dissertation builds on established historical components in Los Angeles’ image-making, primarily boosterism, spectacular display, and racism. The museum operated as part of the booster apparatus. Influential residents constructed Exposition Park and served on the museum board. In its earliest days, exhibits presented Anglo Los Angeles as a civilizing force through scientific farming. During the Cold War, boosters shifted to promote Los Angeles as a mecca of modern living, and the museum presented technology as safe and necessary to democracy. Local industries and designers featured centrally in this narrative. Boosters also used spectacle to ensure impact. Dioramas, Hollywood special effects, and simulated interactive experiences enticed visitors to return again and again. Meanwhile, non-white residents either became romanticized, as in the case of the Mexican Californios, or ignored, as seen in the museum’s surrounding neighborhood, primarily-African American, South Central. Anglo elites removed non-whites from the city’s narrative of progress. Ultimately, this dissertation shows that the museum communicated city leaders’ ideologies of progress and dictated exhibit narratives. This study adds nuance to image-making in Los Angeles, as well as furthering regional analysis of science museums in the United States. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation History 2018

How the Winter Olympics Enrich Community Legacies for Recreational Open Space: A Case Study of Selected European and American Olympic Sites

Brown, Jennifer A. 01 May 2003 (has links)
The Olympics have been a catalyst through the last century for community alteration including both the renovation of existing areas and building of new sites. This study focuses on the post-Olympic use of active and passive recreational open space infrastructure developed by Winter Olympic host cities. This study examines four Winter Olympics. The observation of a variety of Olympic venues has provided an opportunity to compare the differences in planning due to historical, cultural, and social variables. The comparison of these Olympic sites contributes to understanding of the probability of success or failure of post game expectations for recreational open space use. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Winter Olympics on the recreational open space infrastructure of host communities. Future Olympic sites can utilize these experiences as part of a planning effort to create a successful community recreational open space legacy.

Certainty through Flexibility: Intelligence and Paramilitarization in Canadian Public Order Policing

Cartier, Brad 28 March 2012 (has links)
This case study explores public order policing at the Vancouver Olympics and G20 Summit in Toronto. The source material is drawn from media coverage of these events. These cases are analyzed using prior theoretical works in order policing in order to achieve two research goals: to discover which theory best explains police actions and the extent of and reasons explaining the involvement of other government agencies in securing protest events in Canada. Using pattern matching methodology, it was found that no one particular theory is best at explaining events at the two cases, rather components of various theories provided the most useful insight. The components of these theories that need to be amalgamated through analytic induction are: the use of intelligence functions; police flexibility; as well as paramilitarization tactics. Finally, it was found that there was a noticeable presence and integration of other government agencies involved in securing both events.

Creating Brand Awareness Through Event Marketing : The Off-Field Competition of Sportswear Companies in the Olympics

Marmbrandt, Malin, Dolge, Laura January 2012 (has links)
Date: May 30, 2012  University: Mälardalen University, Sweden  Program: MIMA- International Marketing  Course Name: Master Thesis (EFO705)  Title: Creating Brand Awareness Through Event Marketing  The Off-Field Competition of Sportswear Companies in the Olympics  Authors: Laura Dolge and Malin Marmbrandt  Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to research how companies are promoting themselves efficiently to increase brand awareness through advertisement in major sporting events, through viral marketing and athlete endorsement.  Research Questions: Firstly: What are the major differences and similarities between the official and non-official sponsors and their marketing activities when creating brand awareness in sporting events?  Secondly: How do official and non-official sponsoring companies increase brand awareness in sporting events through viral marketing activities?  Thirdly: How do official and non-official sponsoring companies increase brand awareness in sporting events through athlete endorsement?  Method: Data was collected with a qualitative multi-method approach that consists of observations of online social networks and media (netnography), and semi-structured interviews was applied.  Conclusion: The main differences between the official and the non-official sponsor´s marketing campaigns are that the official sponsor has the advantage of using the event’s logo in its campaigns, and is able to advertise during the event. Whilst, there are many rules that restricts the non-official company´s campaigns. Regardless, non-official sponsors are still able to associate themselves with the event by using creative viral marketing campaigns and endorsing athletes, thus create brand awareness by so called ambush marketing.

Att rekonstruera världen : tillämpade på de moderna olympiska spelen / Reconstructing the world : applied on the modern Olympic Games

Andersson, Marcus January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to illustrate a modern phenomenon, the Olympic Games, by applying the ideas of Mircea Eliade concerning space, time and myth. This literature study is mainly divided in two parts, one descriptive and one analytic. In the first part Eliade’s ideas and some criticism, which has been pointed against his theoretical approaches as well as his character, are presented. In the second part an analysis is carried out, based on the previously presented ideas and elements essential for the Olympics; the idea of the Olympics, the place, the ceremonies, the competition and the concept of individual idolism. I have discussed what seems like gnostic tendencies in Eliade’s ideas, in the sense that both Eliade’s ideas and the concept of Gnosticism argue that knowledge is a necessary condition for salvation, as well as the fact that Eliade and his ideas have not always a pro-Christian approach. I have also shown that incoherency exists in his theoretical approach concerning the manifestation of the sacred. I have found that Mircea Eliade’s ideas, with some difficulties, very well can reflect a modern phenomenon such as the Olympic Games. I have also put forth the idea of translating Eliade’s conception of axis mundi into an ideological landscape; the Olympic values become an analogy to axis mundi. Furthermore, I have also shown that modern man in different ways desires to be close to the sacred, and how this fact to some extent may explain people’s devotion to and worship of sport heroes, and thus why not only athletes but also billions of spectators are inclined to attend the Olympics. Finally, I show that, according to Eliade’s ideas, the Olympics might facilitate the process of creating modern myths.

Olympiska spelen i Berlin 1936- Nazisternas propagandaolympiad. : En pressundersökning om svenska tidningars rapportering kring Berlinolympiaden 1936 under Nazitysklands regi. / The 1936 Olympics- Nazi propaganda Olympiad. : A press survey of Swedish newspapers reporting about the Berlin Olympics in 1936 during the Nazi Germany regime.

Rask, Sara January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine four Swedish newspapers' views on the Nazi regime in Germany during the 1930's, and examine what information the Swedish public received through their reporting about the Berlin Olympics in 1936. The survey method of the study examines four Swedish newspapers with different political views, and how they described the Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936 during the Nazi Germany regime.   The theoretical perspective used in the study is the agenda setting theory, where the focus is on how the Olympic Games were depicted in the Swedish press against the agenda setting theory.   The results show the difference in reporting about the Berlin Olympics, based on the newspaper's views of the Nazi Germany regime. Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet show a positive attitude toward Nazi Germany, while Ny Dag shows great displeasure toward the Nazi Germany regime. Arbetet shows, like Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet, a relatively positive attitude toward Nazi Germany, even though the newspaper sometimes expressed criticism directed against Hitler and his regime.
