Jämställdhet på olika villkor : en kvalitativ studie om mäns syn på feminism, genus och jämställdhet mellan män och kvinnor

This essay focuses on men’s construction of feminism and gender and views on equality between the sexes. The purpose of the essay is met through interviews with eight men on their thoughts and constructions of these issues. The answers from the interviewed men were analysed with a radical feminist and gender perspective approach. The sources used in the analysis of the material, in the aspect of gender, were from the work of Judith Butler, Robert W. Connell and Yvonne Hirdman. The conclusion that can be drawn from this essay is that men view feminism as something positive but feminists as negative which is in line with results from previously published studies. Regarding gender the interviewed men were unfamiliar with the term and they discussed gender in terms of masculinity as something they felt did not apply to them. Equality between the sexes is by the interviewed men only pointed out and discussed as inequality in the labour market. This combined with a radical feminist analysis is interpreted as a denial of a feminist analysis that regards women as oppressed in all aspects of society not just in the labour market.

When Fredrik Reinfeldt during the TV4 broadcasting of the Ice hockey World Cup final in 2013 was titled Prime Minister instead of State minister it caused a twitter storm. Denominantions are important to us because they are so closely tied to our identity. We may even get upset on behalf of others. A language reform concerning personal pronouns therefore affect many. The gender- neutral pronoun hen received much media attention in 2012. Emotions ran high among both proponents and opponents who shared their opinions on various forums. In this study, seven debate articles that appeared in Swedish metropolitan press in 2012 are being analyzed from a rhetorical perspective. The intention is to investigate whether the debate is being conducted around the same topos, if misleading arguments occur, and to understand if proponents and opponents are trying to persuade each other and readers of their opinion. The result shows that the arguments often revolve around the same topos, but rests on such different values ​​that a comprehension between the parties does not seem likely in the current situation.

Response of Human Hematopoietic Cells to DNA Double-strand Breaks

Maintenance of hematopoiesis depends upon rare hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which can persist over an organism’s lifetime. It is conceivable that they must maintain a high degree of genetic stability; otherwise recurring exposure to genotoxins and accumulation of genetic changes could result in genomic instability and malignancy or cell death. We have focused on the response of HSCs and primitive hematopoietic cells to highly toxic DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Using assays to detect break rejoining and kinetics of early DSB response foci, we determined that non-cycling human HSC-containing cells display delayed break rejoining kinetics and persistent γH2AX and 53BP1 foci compared to cycling counterparts, more differentiated hematopoietic cells and human primary fibroblasts. In contrast, when stimulated to cycle, these HSC-containing cells are quite efficient at repairing breaks and resolving foci. These data suggest that the DNA damage response may be unusually prolonged in non-cycling primitive hematopoietic cells.

In order to identify expressologs (orthologs exhibiting the highest expression profile ranking) among a variety of plant species, bioinformatic methods were used in order to first identify sequence orthologs and subsequently to rank these orthologs based on expression profile similarity. Analyses conducted on these data suggested that expressologs exhibited greater functional equivalency. A comparison of drought response in A. thaliana and Populus showed that expressologs exhibited a higher correlation when computed using stress data as opposed to developmental data. This suggested that the use of condition-specific data sets is more appropriate when examining specific conditions. Analysis was conducted in order to investigate the hypothesis that neutral evolution was a predominant factor in gene expression divergence. Some evidence was found for selection acting on expression pattern maintenance. Further analysis will be required in order to confirm the type of selection acting to maintain expression patterns across species.

Exploring the Effects of Crosslinking on the Intervertebral Disc

Crosslinking soft tissue has become more common in tissue engineering applications, and recent studies have demonstrated that soft tissue mechanical behavior can be directly altered through crosslinking, but increased understanding of how crosslinking affects intervertebral disc mechanical behavior is needed. In vitro testing of bovine disc and motion segments was used to characterize several important aspects of disc behavior in response to crosslinking after both soaking and injection treatment. The first study was a comparison of different crosslinkers to determine the effect on tensile properties of disc tissue. Circumferential specimens were taken from bovine annulus and then soak treated with an optimized crosslinking formulation or sham solution. A non-contacting laser micrometer was used to measure cross sectional area, after which tension testing until failure was performed to determine yield strain, yield stress, ultimate stress, peak modulus, and resilience. The crosslinkers were observed to produce different changes in the properties, with the measured properties generally increasing. The second study used bilateral annular injections to simulate a clinically relevant delivery method. The dose response of the motion segment’s neutral zone stability metrics against injection concentration was mapped. Concentrations of 20 mM and less had no significant effects on the stability metrics. 40mM demonstrated a change in neutral zone stiffness, while at least 80mM was required to significantly affect neutral zone length. Thus, meaningful changes in joint neutral zone stability were demonstrated using clinically relevant injection and chemical formulations. The third study used combinations of biochemical and accelerated mechanical cyclic loading to degrade gelatin and annulus fibrosus specimens with and without genipin treatment. Genipin crosslinking attenuated changes during cyclic loading to specimen geometry and compliance relative to control samples. Full recovery of genipin treated samples appeared to be hampered, at least partially from continued crosslinking during the accelerated testing. The fourth study tested the effect of genipin crosslinking to resist interlamellar shearing of the annulus lamella. Using a recently reported test method that shears adjacent lamella, crosslinked specimens were noted to have significantly higher yield force, peak force, and resilience compared to sham treated controls, supporting the hypothesis that crosslinking would increase the load bearing ability of the interface.

En estas topologías, y comparadas con el convertidor tradicional de dos niveles, el voltaje que soporta cada dispositivo semiconductor es menor, evitando los problemas asociados con la interconexión serie de dispositivos. La distorsión armónica en la tensión de salida es también menor y la eficiencia mayor. Pero incorporan un número superior de dispositivos semiconductores y la estrategia de modulación resultante es, por tanto, más compleja.Entre estas topologías, el convertidor cc-ca de tres niveles trifásico con conexión al punto neutro del bus de cc es probablemente el más popular. La aplicación a este convertidor de técnicas de modulación convencionales causa una oscilación de la tensión del punto neutro de baja frecuencia (tres veces la frecuencia fundamental de la tensión de salida). In these topologies, and compared to the previous two-level case, the voltage across each semiconductor is reduced, avoiding the problems of the series interconnection of devices. The harmonic distortion of the output voltage is also diminished and the converter efficiency increases. But a larger number of semiconductors is needed and the modulation strategy to control them becomes more complex.Among these topologies, the three-level three-phase neutral-point-clamped voltage source inverter is probably the most popular. The application of traditional modulation techniques to this converter causes a low frequency (three times the fundamental frequency of the output voltage) oscillation of the neutral-point voltage. This, in turn, increases the voltage stress on the devices and generates low-order harmonics in the output voltage.This thesis presents a novel pulsewidth modulation for the three-level three-phase neutral-point-clamped converter, able to achieve a complete control of the neutral-point voltage while also having a low output voltage distortion at around the switching frequency. The new modulation, based on a virtual space vector concept, guarantees the balancing of the neutral-point voltage for any load (linear or nonlinear, any load power factor) over the full range of converter output voltage, the only requirement being that the addition of the output three-phase currents equals zero.The performance of this modulation approach and its benefits over other previously proposed solutions are verified through simulation and experiments in both open- and closed-loop converter configurations.

Normative Violence? The Impact of Gender-neutral Language on Self-reported Rates of Sexual Violence Victimization and Perpetration

The effect of gender-neutral language in a survey designed to measure unwanted sexual experiences was examined. Methodological issues pertaining to survey design and significant variability in prevalence estimates of sexual violence demonstrate that further refinement of self-report instruments is necessary. As a variety of macrolevel forces influence individual behavior, the current study contends that coercive tactics used to obtain sex in mixed-gender interactions are normalized by the traditional heterosex script and conveyed through gender-specific language. Reference to respondents’ sexual partners in gender-neutral, as opposed to gender-specific terms, was hypothesized to result in more disclosure of sexually coercive victimization and perpetration experiences. Logistic regression analyses revealed no statistically significant differences in disclosure between language conditions. Null findings are interpreted with reference to the broader gender-neutral language literature and implications for future research are suggested.

Optimal Policyholder Behavior in Personal Savings Products and its Impact on Valuation

Policyholder exercise behavior presents an important risk factor for life insurance companies. Yet, most approaches presented in the academic literature – building on value maximizing strategies akin to the valuation of American options – do not square well with observed prices and exercise patterns. Following a recent strand of literature, in order to gain insights on what drives policyholder behavior, I first develop a life-cycle model for variable annuities (VA) with withdrawal guarantees. However, I explicitly allow for outside savings and investments, which considerably affects the results. Specifically, I find that withdrawal patterns after all are primarily motivated by value maximization – but with the important asterisk that the value maximization should be taken out from the policyholders’ perspective accounting for individual tax benefits. To this effect, I develop a risk-neutral valuation methodology that takes these different tax structures into consideration, and apply it to our example contract as well as a representative empirical VA. The results are in line with corresponding outcomes from the life cycle model, and I find that the withdrawal guarantee fee from the empirical product roughly accords with its marginal price to the insurer. I further consider the implications of policyholder behavior on product design. In particular – due to differential tax treatments and contrary to option pricing theory – the marginal value of such guarantees can become negative, even when the holder is a value maximizer. For instance, as I illustrate with both a simple two-period model and an empirical VA, a common death benefit guarantee may indeed yield a negative marginal value to the insurer.
