Identity and representation on the internet

Brendel, Claudia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the ways in which identity is established and represented on the Internet. Through detailed case studies of different Internet sites, I examine the changing parameters of these concepts, and indeed of our concept of 'reality' itself. I then undertake a detailed reading of a number of films that represent the Internet as an integral part of their narrative. I make use, but also critique, postmodern understandings of identity and representation. Existing postmodern theories of identity and representation cannot fully account for the way Internet identity functions and the Internet interacts with other media and offline life. New analyses are required to explain the interactions between these concepts. This thesis uses the constructs of presence, performance, the body, and narrative to describe the way in which identity and representation function online, are represented in film and influence offline life.

Perspectives of estrangement : England and Englishness in the novels of Justin Cartwright

Buchanan, Andrea Susan 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis explores how Justin Cartwright’s perspective on Englishness, as a South Africanborn writer living and writing in England, is played out in his novels. Four of Cartwright’s novels with English settings are analysed: In Every Face I Meet (1995), The Promise of Happiness (2004), To Heaven by Water (2009) and Other People’s Money (2011). Cartwright’s position as a self-conscious observer of English life is revealed as eliciting a nuanced critique of Englishness. It is argued that Cartwright adopts something of an anthropological approach towards his English subjects, and that this troubles the traditional gaze of the Western anthropologist upon the “other”. At the same time, his protagonists are represented with humane sympathy, though this is often tempered with irony. Drawing on Paul Gilroy’s ideas about race and multiculture in England and Robert J.C. Young’s The Idea of English Ethnicity, this thesis discusses Cartwright’s presentation of Englishness as both potentially inclusive and exclusive. Cartwright also sets England against America, and more significantly, against Africa. Cartwright’s portrayal of Africa is shown to reveal his somewhat ambivalent attitude towards his birthplace. Throughout the thesis, Cartwright’s novels are discussed with an awareness of the influence that the social philosopher Isaiah Berlin has had on the author, particularly with regard to his critique of idealism and his espousal of value pluralism and liberal humanism. Yet it is also suggested that Cartwright’s liberal humanism may be intertwined with his complex and ambivalent attitude towards Africa. Moreover, the ironic tone and postmodern, metafictional elements of these novels perform Cartwright’s belief in value pluralism in interesting ways. The relationship between literature, art and national fictions is furthermore discussed, in conversation with Benedict Anderson’s ideas about nationalism. This thesis provides a close-reading of the works of this under-researched author and examines the complexity of his “estranged” position towards Englishness. Vier van Cartwright se romans met ‘n Engelse agtergrond word ontleed: In Every Face I Meet (1995), The Promise of Happiness (2004), To Heaven by Water (2009) en Other People’s Money (2011). Young se The Idea of English Ethnicity, bespreek hierdie tesis hoe Cartwright Engelsheid voorstel as sowel potensieel inklusief as eksklusief.

A ABORDAGEM FENOMENOLÓGICA DA ANTROPOLOGIA FILOSÓFICA: PESSOA E ESPÍRITO EM MAX SCHELER / THE PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH TO PHILOSOPHICAL ANTHROPOLOGY: PERSON AND SPIRIT IN MAX SCHELER

Klaus, Leila Rosibeli 10 September 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The work s objective relies mainly on the reading of Scheler s Philosophical Anthropology, to bring up the theme about the problem of man from phenomenological approaches. We attempt to develop Scheler s philosophical perspective through the phenomenological method, which is established mainly by Husserl. The contributions on this philosopher concept of intuition were decisive to the elaboration of Schelerian ethics, but especially to the Philosophical Anthropology. Scheler s concern about the human phenomenon demands a renewed metaphysics. In search of the human being s unity, the Scheleriansmetaphysics together with the phenomenology, rewrite man s essentiality. From that, the man, as person in the world, owns a peculiar structure, namely, the spirit. In turn, this concept grants to Scheler s Philosophical Anthropology the metaphysical leap from the concrete sphere to the transcendental sphere. In order to sustain the thesis concerning the phenomenological method present in the metaphysics of Scheler s Philosophical Anthropology, we start from a historic-conceptual contextualization of Scheler s Philosophical Anthropology. Posteriorly, a more focused analysis will be made of Scheler s more metaphysical thesis, to place the issue of the philosopher s phenomenological affiliation. The main work here analyzed is The Position of Man in the Cosmos (1928). Adjuvant works such as The Ethics and Ideas I, by Husserl, proved importance to the research. A principal obra aquianalisada é A Posição do Homem no Cosmos(1928).

Reflecting on Philosophical Grammar / Reflexionando acerca de la gramática filosófica

Padilla, Jesús 09 April 2018 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this paper is to analyze Wittgenstein’s philosophical grammar in the Middle Period. The paper examines the thesis that grammar is not responsible for reality. It investigates the role that rules play in this context and how they determine meaning. Special focus shall be put on arbitrary rules. Therefore, we shall develop a thesis of vagueness with special emphasis on perspicuous representation.

Edson Ponick 20 March 2014 (has links)
This research on childrens theology analyzes the content and form of the theological reflections produced and raised by a group of children interacting with biblical stories in a school context. Although based on participatory research, both the execution of the project and the analysis of the generated data are grounded on the philosophical hermeneutics of Gadamer, particularly his considerations on the other, the hermeneutic circle, language, games and prejudices. Over a semester we held meetings with children in which different strategies for talking about the parables of Jesus were applied. The paper starts out by outlining what characterizes this child that addresses us today, in a dialogue supported by contributions from several childhood studies. It presents the child as an agent of post-modernity and discusses his/her participation in the consumer society. It then turns to theologies that allow for differentiated and more inclusive approaches to the Christian faith, while also highlighting some very diversified experiences of theology with children in other countries. The research demonstrates that the hermeneutical interpretation of the data arising from the talks reveals an ecologic concern with the environment as Gods creation, an awareness regarding people that are excluded from our society, as well as openness and honesty to raise questions and present arguments. The thesis maintains that the dynamic and joyful participation of the children typifies the meetings as appropriate occasions for the children to make their own discoveries, reflections and theological productions.

The relinquishment of Plain dress : British Quaker women's abandonment of Plain Quaker attire, 1860-1914

Rumball, Hannah Frances January 2016 (has links)
This thesis discusses how British Quaker women negotiated relinquishing their religiously prescribed Plain dress from 1860 to 1914 in the context of developments in Quaker feminine identity. This thesis approaches its subjects by examining the primary source of surviving Quaker garments in British dress collections. These items provide the basis from which research methodologies and the personal narratives of Quaker women and their case studies are developed. Surviving garments, alongside historical letters, diaries, religious texts, department store catalogues, photographs and period dress illustrations are analysed in order to understand how women Quakers practised their religion and organised their public appearance through dress during this period. The original quality of this research is the outcome of an interdisciplinary approach. No other research project in the international dress history or religious history fields has discussed and critically considered the identity of British Quaker women through an analysis of their surviving clothing between 1860 and 1914. This aspect of British social history and therefore British identity has until now remained unexplored and unacknowledged. By 1860 Quakerism had undergone extreme doctrinal upheaval, which had led to the abandonment of those rules which enforced Plainness of speech and apparel that same year. Even prior to 1860, this thesis reveals that some women were incorporating fashion into their religious Plain dress, by using fashionable silhouettes and high-quality fabrics albeit eschewing bright colours and ornamentation. After 1860 however, male and female Quakers had complete individual freedom of choice in their clothing. During this period of religious turmoil, female Victorian Quakers vocalised a range of opinions on women's emancipation, education and welfare, on their role within the religious society and their opinions concerning dress through published correspondence in Quaker journals. This thesis identifies a variety of views concerning dress between 1860 and 1914, as Quaker women negotiated their individual freedom of choice in attire in a ternary manner. Moreover, this thesis proves that this ternary interpretation was acknowledged by Quakers themselves and discussed within Quaker journals in the 1860-1914 period. Quakers of the period identified these ternary interpretations as ascetic, moderate and fashionable. This thesis proposes a new set of classifying terms, Non-Adaptive, Semi-Adaptive and Fully-Adaptive, in reflection of the extent to which Quaker women adapted their religious clothing to incorporate fashion alongside their differing interpretations of Quaker belief. Four case studies illustrate further these three adaptive interpretations, and show how individual Quaker women chose to present themselves to their religious community and wider society.

Salvador

Symetrická koncepce státu / Symmetrical Concept of the State

Gregárek, Matěj January 2018 (has links)
Symmetrical Concept of the State Abstract: The doctoral thesis uses the perspective of Public Choice (political economy) on a descriptive level and the perspective of philosophical anarchism on a normative level to critically assess the concept of modern state (and its crises and legitimacy), as it is used in Staatswissenschaften and political philosophy. Common theme of both paradigms is insistence on symmetry of assumptions when analyzing the state; particularities of the state, as compared to other social institutions, do not play the role of explanans, but that of explanandum. Traditional concepts of political philosophy (sovereignty, will of the people, legitimacy) are consistently put in the context of the general social phenomena, from which they are (or should be) derived. The symmetrical approach asserts itself primarily against the fictional nature of some political concepts; in this thesis, fictional concepts are approached as assumptions of a "political model" and their unrealistic nature is not seen problematic so far as they stay within the model. However, at the same time, the question about the external (normative and practical) relevance (validity) of such a model arises. First part of the thesis argues for applicability - and in fact, indispensability - of the economic toolkit...
