En studie om skrivutveckling med fokus på stavningKarlsson Mollner, Susanna January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine how some teachers in the classes 1, 3 and 6 look on the reasons of difficulties in spelling, how they work with the formal side of writing development with focus on spelling and what they think about information- and communication technology influencing the writing development of pupils. The following questions are answered in the study: How is the teaching in to-day´s school regarding the development of writing and spelling? What can the reasons be why pupils spell badly according to the teachers? How can information- and communication technology influence the writing development of pupils? The study is a qualitative study based on half-structured interviews with six teachers from two schools in the classes 1, 3 and 6. In the survey of literature in my study a summary of earlier research concerning writing development is given. A comparison is made with the produced results in this study. The result shows that the teaching is in keeping with the writing pedagogics which is recommended in literature. The teachers are well aware of the importance of phonology for spelling development but they say nothing about the morphological spelling strategies. The opinions amongst the teachers differ regarding the importance of teaching spelling rules. This study does not verify that the information- and communication technology influences the writing ability of the pupils in a negative way.

Short message service normalization for communication with a health information systemAdesina, Ademola Olusola January 2011 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Short Message Service (SMS) is one of the most popularly used services for communication between mobile phone users. In recent times it has also been proposed as a means for information access. However, there are several challenges to be overcome in order to process an SMS, especially when it is used as a query in an information retrieval system.SMS users often tend deliberately to use compacted and grammatically incorrect writing that makes the message difficult to process with conventional information retrieval systems. To overcome this, a pre-processing step known as normalization is required. In this thesis an investigation of SMS normalization algorithms is carried out. To this end, studies have been conducted into the design of algorithms for translating and normalizing SMS text. Character-based, unsupervised and rule-based techniques are presented.
An investigation was also undertaken into the design and development of a system for information access via SMS. A specific system was designed to access information related to a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) database in healthcare, using a case study. This study secures SMS communication, especially for healthcare information systems. The proposed technique is to encipher the messages using the secure shell (SSH) protocol.

A guide to motivating students to twist to better spellingDu Cloux, Kim Elaine 01 January 2003 (has links)
Students learn and retain more when they enjoy the process or avenue of learning. Students have fun learning to spell when visual, auditory, and hands-on learning are included in the process. In addition, the intervention project can be used to support and assist second language learners. The benefits from this intervention project will not only strengthen students' phonemic and spelling foundation, but will also enhance their reading comprehension and writing effectiveness.

“Do we rely need tradisional spelling instruction when their are spell checkers?” : The correlation between spell checkers and spelling acquisition of the L2 learnerNetterström, Jonna, Persson, Amanda January 2020 (has links)
This study aimed to investigate in which ways spell checkers affect L2 learners’ spelling acquisition and whether or not they are suitable for educational purposes. A systematic literature review and a survey were conducted to retrieve data. Further, a phenomenographic approach was applied throughout the study. The results of the study showed that in order forspell checkers to function as an aid for the L2 learners’ spelling acquisition, the learner needs to consciously engage in explicit learning to be able to utilize the aid. Therefore, spell checkers require learners to use individual responsibility. The results also showed that spell checkers need improvements in order to fully function in educational purposes since current spell checkers have limitations as far as detecting errors.

The subject of the practical part was to create and apply an alternative teaching method and to teach pupils to use soft and hard i/y after spellingly soft and hard consonants. The survey was conducted with pupils of the second year of primary school in the form of application of an alternative teaching method created on the basis of a synthesis of knowledge from the theoretical part. It was attended by 21 pupils for 22 teaching hours. Main testing was performed at the beginning and at the end, continuous testing took place in sections of the subject matter. The survey also included testing of fifth and seventh grade pupils in order to map the current state of knowledge of the topic....

Åsrunan. Användning och ljudvärde i runsvenska steninskrifter / The os-rune: Use and phonetic value in Rune-Swedish inscriptions on stoneWilliams, Henrik January 1990 (has links)
The runic alphabet in the Viking Age (ca. 800-1100) only consisted of 16 characters. These did not cover the Rune-Swedish phoneme system. One of the runes, the so-called os-rune, was used for at least 8 different phonemes. By tradition it has been used to date Viking Age runic inscriptions in the Scandinavian countries. The present work investigates the phonetic and phonemic value of the os-rune in Rune-Swedish inscriptions on stone, altogether 1,745 instances in 961 inscriptions. On the basis of the analysis, the accepted view of the chronological value of the os-rune is assessed, and is found to be non-valid. The regional variations in the use of the os-rune are also studied, particularly in the context of individual rune-carvers, but also to see if any dialectal variation is discernable. It is found that there is a marked consistency in the use of the os-rune for either rounded or unrounded vowels. Inscriptions, where both uses occur, are concentrated to one small geographical area. There are also areas, where the use of the os-rune for rounded vowels is the rule. / <p>Digitaliserad utgåva 2016, kompletterad med en lista över viktigare rättelser</p> / De vikingatida runinskrifternas kronologi
