Faculty of Humanities / The ability to achieve academic success is dependent on the acquisition of academic
language proficiency, basic to which is the ability to decode and comprehend relevant
academic content, with limited contextual support. Research indicates that English
Second Language (ESL) learners at primary and tertiary educational institutions in
South Africa lack the skills necessary for academic success. This study investigated
firstly, the relationship between academic achievement of Grade 8 learners and their
decoding and spelling ability and secondly, the impact of a peer mentoring paired
reading programme on reading and spelling skills of Grade 8 ESL learners. Results
confirm a strong positive relationship between reading and spelling skills of learners
and their academic achievement and suggests that the lack of reading skills is not
confined to second language English learners only. The reading programme had a
significant impact on the on the decoding skills of ESL learners and a small nonsignificant
impact on spelling and comprehension skills.

Faculty of Humanities / This study forms part of a series of studies on the use of mental imagery in learning.
Preliminary data suggests that high mental imagery techniques are as effective as
phonological based techniques in the remediation of the English language abilities of learners
with difficulties in reading and written expression, and may lead to greater improvements
where children have previously not learned using phonic approaches to learning to read,
write and spell. Preliminary data further suggest that cognitive improvements, which cannot
be explained purely by maturation factors, are also apparent as a result. The primary focus of
this study was to investigate the effectiveness of high mental imagery techniques in
improving the simultaneous and successive processing abilities of Grade V learners with
learning disorders of reading and written expression. It also aimed to explore the usefulness
of mental imagery techniques in improving the English spelling, reading and writing abilities
of these learners.
Eight Grade V learners attending a remedial primary school were selected to participate in
this study. These learners were those who, in view of their scholastic history, were
considered to be ‘treatment resisters’, implying that they had progressed poorly and had not
responded well to other forms of traditional remedial intervention received in improving their
English language abilities. Each participant’s cognitive, spelling, reading and writing abilities
were pre and post tested utilising various psycho-educational and cognitive psychological
assessment tools and their phonic skills were analysed. The sample received six months of
bi-weekly individual remedial tuition in accordance with the remedial intervention strategy
of the study group to which the participants had been randomly assigned. Four participants
were tutored via high mental imagery techniques (experimental group) and four participants
tutored utilising a phonological approach, forming the contrast group.
Aggregated case study methodology was utilised to analyse the data. The results of this pilot
study suggest that high mental imagery techniques are useful in improving the successive and
simultaneous processing abilities and reading, spelling and writing skills of learners suffering
learning disorders of reading and written expression. It should be noted that statistical
analysis of the results was not undertaken owing to the small numbers of participants
comprising the sample. However, when results obtained were analysed on a case by case basis as well as through aggregated case contrasts, there were strong indications to suggest
that the gains made by the those participants tutored using high mental imagery techniques
exceeded those of participants tutored in phonological techniques.

Reading and writing are two complex activities that contribute to success in all school subjects. For apprentice writers, and particularly for students with learning difficulties (notably students with dyslexia), learning to spell represents a real challenge and often requires years of effort. To be successful, students require knowledge of the orthographic code, which is the foundation upon which spelling ability it built. To recognize and produce written words, students must develop a set of core skills that are linked to orthographic knowledge, including knowledge of the phonological, morphological and visual properties of the orthographic code. As their spelling skills develop, readers and writers must construct increasingly stable and better defined orthographic representations that reflect the properties of the orthographic code. However, recent empirical research has found that students with dyslexia, who tend to make more errors related to word merging and segmentation than students without writing difficulties, do not seem to have accurate orthographic representations of the words they are trying to spell, particularly of the beginnings and endings of words. Therefore, the general aim of this study is to explain spelling errors occurring at word boundaries in dyslexic children. To our knowledge, no typical trajectory of development has been established for normally-developing readers/writers with regards to knowledge of lexical boundaries. Therefore, using both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, this study’s first objective is to describe the performances of normally-developing reader and writers from kindergarten to grade 4 on tasks related to lexical boundary knowledge (Study 1). With this developmental reference having been established, the second study will evaluate lexical boundary knowledge in primary school students with dyslexia (study 2). To evaluate ability in reading and word production, a reading test from the K-ABC battery and a dictation task requiring students to insert words in the context of a sentence were administered. To evaluate knowledge of lexical boundaries, three tasks (a lexical decision task, a lexical identification task, and a lexical permutation task) were completed by all participants in oral and written form, each of which varied according to the level of cognitive constraint involved in completing the task.

Previous issue date: 2008-02-28 / This research has as regional cutting the State of Paraná, with the analysis of the progressive spelling book – the first spelling book of author paranaense, elaborated in 1900 and used up to 1907, whose method of reading teaching had been adopted officially in this State. This way it is believed that this research can contribute for the production in the area of the Historizes od the Brasilian Education. The term “spelling book” is the unfolding of the word “letter” that was used in Portuguese language from the beginning of the modern age for your time, to identify those texts printed, whose the explicit purpose would be it of teaching to read to write and to count the the word flowed of letter, therefore, as any didn´t exist text book until then, the teachers elaborated some hand written texts for the teaching of the reading, or they used letters, occupations and registry documents. Like this of the letters they happened to the spelling books. They were used initially in Brasil, the letters and later spelling books of Portuguese publisher, that for the first series, of the elementary schools. The spelling book found for analysis it was edicted in 1907, and used in schools paranaenses, it is called progressive schools. And it is of Lindolpho Pombo´s authorship – man that stood out as director of the public school and writer. To understand how the spelling books and your contribution appeared for the area of the education, it is necessary to understand some aspects of the history. The general objective of this research is to look for to understand in that social and political context appeared the progressive spelling book, the first of author paranaense, used in the State
of Paraná for the public instruction, the specific objectives of this research: To analyse the first spelling book literacy paranaense, as well as your appearance and your importance;
to investigate the pedagogic conception of the author explicited in the progressive spelling book; for us to reach the proposed objectives, Some documents were analysed originating from of the following places: Museum Paranaense; Public Library of Paraná; House of the Memory (Curitiba); Cycle of Studies of Bandeirantes; Public File of the State of Paraná; and other projects related to the research as the project Memory of the text book (USP/SP).

In the area of written French, the orthographic learning represents a major difficulty. Faced with multiple complexities, any writer will have a long way to go before arriving at the complete control of spelling, and this is probably more true when it comes to appropriating this French system in a foreign language which is typologically distinct from the French language. This study aims to analyze the orthographic realization in French L2, for Chinese learners. To do this, we examine data from a semi-spontaneous writing task, focusing in particular on the developmental profile of learners, and their interlanguage tendencies in relation to the problems of lexical orthography, number/gender agreement, and verbal morphology. In addition, an errors analysis as well as possible explanations for interpreting these errors are also presented, with reference to the specific characteristics of L2 learning.

The Effects of Word Prediction on Writing Fluency for Students with Physical DisabilitiesMezei, Peter John 06 October 2009 (has links)
Writing is a multifaceted, complex task that involves interaction between physical and cognitive skills. Individuals with physical disabilities vary in terms of both their physical and cognitive abilities. Often they must overcome one or more significant barriers in order to engage in the task of writing. Minimizing or eliminating barriers is important because opportunities are greater for individuals who can effectively communicate their ideas via writing. Assistive technology (AT) is an increasingly effective solution to increase typing fluency. The purpose of this study is to examine if word prediction software, a commonly used software program used with individuals with learning disabilities, will be effective for those with physical impairments to increase typing rate and reduce spelling errors (fluency). Data will be collected for words correct per minute (WCPM) and errors (e.g., spelling). Four middle- or high school-aged participants with diverse physical disabilities will be recruited in this single subject, alternating treatment design. Participants will type for three-minute timed sessions using either a standard word processor or Co:Writer 4000, a word prediction software program. Specific research questions are: (a) to what extent will students with physical and health disabilities produce greater WCPM when writing a draft paper on a common topic using word prediction rather than word processing, (b) to what extent will the use of word prediction software result in the production of different types of errors compared to errors produced using word processing, (c) to what extent will the use of word prediction software increase accuracy by decreasing spelling errors, (d) to what extent will more text be produced using word prediction software than with word processing, and (e) to what extent will word prediction increase motivation or willingness to write? Data will be graphed and analyzed for bifurcation. Bifurcation will be determined by examination of the means, level of performance, and trend. Finally, examination of errors will be used to verify spelling accuracy.

The aim of this study was to examine the learning strategies of reading and spelling that Greek primary school children apply. Moreover, it is evaluated whether these strategies are compatible with the dual foundation model of reading development that has been proposed for learning to read in the English language. This study is part of a wider cross-european project (Literacy Acquisition in European Orthographies) that focuses on the investigation of learning to read in different orthographic writing systems.
More specifically, the present thesis attempted to investigate reading development over time and for that reason a two-axis design was adopted. The first axis focused on the reading and spelling development of 50 children attending primary 1, who were evaluated in four different testing points throughout the year. The second axis assessed the reading and orthographic growth of 100 students of grades A΄, B΄, C and D΄. Reading achievement was evaluated on the basis of word and nonword reading fluency and accuracy, while variables as orthographic consistency, item length, syllabic structure, frequency etc were taken into account. Furthermore, this study included the evaluation of testing variables such as the level of phonological awareness, intelligence, working memory as well as control processes. Data analysis revealed the following conclusions: (1) children quite quickly and relatively easy acquire the foundation level of reading development, (2) the rapid acquisition of letter knowledge, the phonological awareness skills, as well as the standard reaching approach induce the development of the alphabetic process in the early stages of reading acquisition, (3) evidence acquired from data analysis does not support the existence of a logographic phase in reading development in the Greek language, (4) on the contrary, data analysis confirms the existence of an orthographic reading phase, (5) at the end of primary 1, children’s reading strategies appear compatible with the development of the morphographic phase of reading, (6) syllable seems to be the basic linguistic unit used in decoding, (7) towards the end of Primary 1 children tend to use a more holistic strategy in reading, which is not affected by either the syllabic structure or the orthographic conventions of the Greek language, (8) a position-of-irregularity effect can be detected on both reading speed and accuracy and, last but not least, (9) performance on rapid naming task may predict later reading performance through fourth grade.

La sensibilité précoce à la morphologie dans l'acquisition de la lecture et de l'orthographe en langue arabeEl Akiki, Carole 12 September 2018 (has links)
Studies in alphabetic languages suggest the presence of morphological processing in reading already at the beginning of learning (Casalis et al, 2015). The linguistic characteristics of Arabic, particularly its richness in morphological derivations, could have implications for the acquisition of reading and spelling. In expert readers, studies with priming techniques showed morphological decomposition of Arabic words (Boudelaa and Marslen-Wilson, 2015) but there is almost no research available on beginning readers. In addition, derived words in Arabic (example: kātib) are formed from the combination of a consonantal root (K-T-B) and a vocal pattern (_ā_i_). These two morphemes cannot be isolated either aurally or visually as independent units but are part of an abstract mental representation. This could make their identification difficult for beginning readers. Our thesis aims at evaluating the presence of morphological processes in the recognition of written words, with 139 Lebanese children, from the first to the fourth grade. In a first cross-sectional study, we examined the effect of root and pattern frequency on reading and the contribution of morphological and phonological knowledge to the reading of words and pseudowords and to the comprehension of written words. In the second study, we looked for the presence of this effect in spelling. The third study is longitudinal. The same children carried out, one year after the first evaluation, the tests of the cross-sectional study. The results suggest that the ability to read and spell in Arabic is influenced very early by the awareness of the morphological composition, more specifically the familiarity with the patterns.

Previous issue date: 2016 / Orthographic norms are social conventions designed to facilitate written communication. The school has the role of developing activities that promote the appropriation of the rules by the students, and the Portuguese teacher is responsible for including in their teaching practices the study of the correct notation the written language, since knowledge of spelling has social relevance and are necessary for the competent use of the language. However, learners show difficulties in spelling, even in the final grades of middle school. Many of these difficulties are related to oral language, often their texts present several words written as they are pronounded. It is clear that the students do not have the mastery of the orthographic system and they do not know the differences between written language and oral language. It is necessary, therefore, that a pedagogical work be developed by the teacher so that the students overcome these difficulties. Thus, this work has as objective the treatment of two specific and interrelated orthographic problems: deletion of -r in the final codas of verbs in the infinitive, orthographic error of phonological source and the insertion of this rhotic at the end of words forming, unduly, the verbal infinitive, which constitutes an overgeneralization of the rule. Such spelling problems were the most frequent - in the texts of students from two classes of the 8th grade of middle school - analyzed in this study, hence the need for an intervention. For the theoretical basis of this study, some phonological processes presented by Seara, Nunes and Lazzarotto-Volcão (2015), the reflections and researches of Cagliari (2001, 2002b), as well as the studies of Morais (2007a, 2007b, 2007c, 2008), Bortoni-Ricardo (2004a, 2004b), Bortoni-Ricardo and Oliveira (2013), Callou, Serra and Cunha (2015) were considered. This study is a quantitative-qualitative action research. Firstly, a diagnosis was conducted with the use of essays to identify the most recurrent errors in the texts of the students in the first class; and a dictation of sentences to verify only the errors in focus in the second group, since such problems had already been selected from the initial diagnosis in class 1. For the treatment, periodic pedagogical interventions were carried out within the pedagogical time allotted to the Portuguese lessons. The activities were based on the reflection of writing with the support of texts in the different genres. The results pointed out considerable improvement in the correct writing of verbs in the infinitive. It was concluded that regularly scheduled orthographic activities generate positive results.
