Summary
The intention of this research project is to evolve a concept for empirical
missiology as a method of fundamental research and to apply it in practice.
Through the usage of an intradisciplinary approach, access to missiology via the
methodology of the social sciences is rendered possible. To establish a basis, an
insight into social as well as missiological research will be given, and an inherent,
empirical-theological praxis cycle will be developed. This praxis cycle is the
methodology of this research paper. Concerning content, this research paper
scrutinises the image of God held by juveniles from a missiological point of view. It
considers the missionary receptiveness of juveniles in the context of cultural
change in the postmodernist shift of paradigm.
In how far are juvenile concepts of God marked by the correspondent social
environment and does that have an impact on their everyday religious behaviour?
Consequently not only the current state of research will be evaluated but,
furthermore, the half-standardised qualitative interviews of 18 juveniles will be
enclosed and their answers analysed on an empirical- missiological basis.
Hence, this thesis has a twofold aim; one considers empirical-theological research
as a way of evaluating concepts of God among juveniles with regard to their
missionary receptiveness. The other implements the empirical-theological praxis
cycle aiming to develop a type which enables further empirical-theological
investigation in missilogy. / Missiology / D.Th.

Mission as hospitality : the ministry of the Free Methodist church to orphaned and vulnerable children in Kawama township in Ndola, ZambiaNyiratabaruka, Annociata M. 08 1900 (has links)
This study focusses on the missiological response of the Pamodzi Free Methodist Church to the plight of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), specifically girl children in the Kawama Township in the Republic of Zambia. The major question to answer was “How can the cultural and biblical heritage of hospitality help the church particularly the Pamodzi Free Methodist Church to respond to the problems of OVCs, particularly girl children as victims of urban problems?”
The study discovered that forces such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, child abuse, family breakdown, cultural beliefs and practices as well as a lack of care from the extended family have contributed to the vulnerability of OVCs. It recommends that the members of God’s household should have a mandate to restore the dignity and identity of OVCs in a holistic manner by linking the biblical and traditional values of hospitality as well as to develop intervention measures in order to meet the felt needs of OVCs. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. Selbstverständnis der ostdeutschen Frau in der Brüderbewegung in Mission und Gesellschaft / The self-conception of the East-German woman in the Brethren Movement in mission and society06 1900 (has links)
This empirical and theological research investigates the self-conception of the east-german
women in the Brethren Movement, in order to discover by which role model they predominantly
orientated themselves. Therefore women were interviewed, who are – on one hand – socialised
in the Brethren Movement, and on the other hand have partly realized the GDR role model
through working in a typically male business and/or in a leading position. It was possible to describe
in that study three contrasting typologies. On that foundation, thesis and conclusions were
drawn for the development of identity and the operation of the church.
This project wants to make a contribution to the investigation of the –almost untouched academically
– field of the women in the Brethren Movement. At the same time it should serve as an
historical example in how the church dealt with changing role models.
Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)

Pathways to healing : an empirical-theology study of the healing praxis of 'the group' Assemblies of God in KwaZulu-Natal, South AfricaThomas, Andrew James 06 1900 (has links)
The study commenced by identifying a theological problem relating to the lack of understanding regarding grass-roots African Pentecostal healing praxis. The empirical-theological approach of Van der Ven was utilised, therefore, to study the healing praxis of an African Pentecostal body, called: The Group‘ Assemblies of God, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Van der Ven‘s original framework was developed by drawing on the hermeneutic and methodological work of Cartledge.
A case study was undertaken on a Group‘ Assembly in rural KwaZulu-Natal. The use of social scientific techniques produced a wide range of results that point to the church‘s ministry of healing as a process, rooted in the Trinity, that can occur through varied channels. These pathways ended in a broad understanding of healing.
A dialogue between the qualitative results and the healing literature was used to develop a more precise theological question. Case study categories were conceptualised and then operationalised as a questionnaire. A survey was performed on all Assemblies affiliated to The Group‘ Assemblies of God in KwaZulu-Natal. A significant number of people participated in the survey which produced a wide range of data. It is found that worldview and charismatic experience form an important hermeneutic axis that influences attitudes towards the healing ministry. Conservative biblical belief, ethnicity, education and gender influence attitudes towards healing. A distinct divide exists between positive attitudes towards physical, spiritual, inner healing and deliverance and more negative attitudes towards social and environmental healing. The reflection on these results focuses on the perceived influence of American dispensational fundamentalism. The eschatology formed from these beliefs has a narrowing effect on holistic healing ministry. Moltmann‘s transformational eschatology is suggested, therefore, as a suitable alternative. The methodological evaluation finds that several problems exist with regard to research in a rural African location. The cycle concludes by offering a range of suggestions for further study. / Practical Theology / D. Th. (Practical Theology)
