Use of the JET pedestal database to assess the role of ion temperature and plasma rotation on the discrepancy between ideal peeling-ballooning model and experimental data

Eichenberger, Max January 2022 (has links)
Next-generation and present fusion devices such as the Joint European Torus (JET) aim for plasma operations in H-mode, a plasma regime with high confinement and low loss of energy and fuel that results from a barrier for heat and particle transport at the plasma edge, the pedestal. Due to steep gradients of the density, temperature and pressure profiles, the pedestal experiences instabilities called Edge-localized-modes (ELMs) which lead to large fluxes of heat and particles that might damage machine components. A theoretical value for the critical threshold for the pressure gradient is determined by the Peeling-Ballooning (PB) model. Although this model has been rather reliable, experiments have shown a discrepancy between the experimental pedestal pressure gradient and the critical pressure gradient determined by the model. A number of experimental gradients were significantly lower than the predicted gradients. The mechanisms responsible for this discrepancy are not fully understood yet. The present hypothesis identifies the relative shift between the positions of the temperature and density pedestals and neutral pressure as key parameters, related to input power and gas dosing among other engineering parameters. Further impact could arise from the assumption of equal ion and electron temperature and the neglecting of the plasma rotation (velocity). In order to investigate this issue more thoroughly, JET established a comprehensive database containing pedestal characteristics. As a part of this work, a software has been implemented to visualize the data since such a tool did not exist yet. The tool enables the plotting of pedestal related parameters while specific data subsets can be selected or neglected. The tool has been used to investigate the impact of ion temperature and plasma rotation on the discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental critical gradients. Hereby, many relevant parameters needed to be constrained to observe an isolated impact of ion temperature and plasma rotation. The results of this investigation support the hypothesis that mainly the relative shift affects the discrepancy between experimental and predicted pressure gradient, but that also the use of experimental ion temperature can contribute to reduce the discrepancy.

Aproximações da diagonal e anéis de cohomologia dos grupos fundamentais das superfícies, de fibrados do toro e de certos grupos virtualmente cíclicos / Diagonal approximations and cohomology rings for the fundamental groups of surfaces, torus bundles and some virtually cyclic groups

Martins, Sergio Tadao 28 November 2012 (has links)
Given a group G, a definition for its cohomology groups with coefficients in a given ZG-module M can be given using the standard techniques of Homological Algebra, that ensure the existence of projective resolutions P of Z as a trivial ZG-module, the equivalence between two such resolutions etc . We can also construct the cup product, whose definition depends on a diagonal approximation for a given projective resolution P. However, the explicit computation of such resolutions and of the cohomology groups may be very hard in practice, and even worse may be the task of constructing a diagonal approximation. In this thesis, we obtain free resolutions and diagonal approximations for the fundamental groups of surfaces that are K(G,1) spaces and for the fundamental group of the torus bundle with the circle as the base space, as well as the structure of the cohomology ring of these groups. Also, for some virtually cyclic groups, we obtain the cohomology ring by an explicit computation of a free resolution and a diagonal approximation, or by the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence. The motivation for the study of the first family of groups comes from the fact that such groups represent manifolds of dimension 2 and 3, and the groups of the second family act on homotopy spheres.

Dinâmica de vórtices em superfícies com aplicações ao problema de dois vórtices no toro plano / Vortex dynamics on surfaces with applications to the problem of two vortices in a flat torus

Humberto Henrique de Barros Viglioni 15 May 2013 (has links)
In this thesis the equations for the motion of vortices on Riemannian surfaces is studied. Using conservation of momentum and physical arguments, the classical equations of Hally and Boatto/Koiller are recovered. Then the localization result for the Euler\'s equation with flat metric (Marchioro and Pulvirenti) and the determination of the Green\'s and Robin\'s functions on plane domains are revisited in the context of Riemannian surfaces. On a second part of the thesis two examples are analyzed. At first the dynamics of a passive tracer in the unit disk on the flat plane with constant background vorticity. At second the dynamics of two vortices on flat tori. This last system is integrable. The dynamics is determined by the level sets of the Green\'s function which depends on the modular parameter of the torus. The full bifurcation diagram of the system as a function of the module parameter is determined.

Loureiro, Luiz Tiaraju dos Reis January 2008 (has links)
This work presents the basic features of an axial flux, permanent magnet, double rotor and toroidal windings mounted between the rotors. The machine was built in the Laboratory of Electrical Machines, Drives and energy of the School of Engineering of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The work contains analytical models of permanent magnets and armature windings magnetic inductions. Based in models, expressions of electromotive forces and torques were derived. The calculations were performed with a symbolical mathematical software. It is presented a comparison between results obtained with analytical model and results of the numerical simulation. Some comparisons include experimental results. The expressions of machine torque will be detailed in a next phase. The compared results present an acceptable conformity.

Asymptotic spectral analysis and tunnelling for a class of difference operators

Rosenberger, Elke January 2006 (has links)
We analyze the asymptotic behavior in the limit epsilon to zero for a wide class of difference operators H_epsilon = T_epsilon + V_epsilon with underlying multi-well potential. They act on the square summable functions on the lattice (epsilon Z)^d.<br> We start showing the validity of an harmonic approximation and construct WKB-solutions at the wells. Then we construct a Finslerian distance d induced by H and show that short integral curves are geodesics and d gives the rate for the exponential decay of Dirichlet eigenfunctions. In terms of this distance, we give sharp estimates for the interaction between the wells and construct the interaction matrix.

Non-elliptical point contacts : The Torus-on-Plane conjunction / Contact ponctuel non-elliptique : Le cas du contact Tore-Plan

Wheeler, Jean-David 05 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to the study of torus on plane contacts under various operating conditions. They can be found at the interface between the torus roller-end and the flange in roller bearings. The first challenge of this thesis is to deal with unusual mating geometries. The other challenge is the presence of a complex kinematic which operates in these contacts. In order to further develop the understanding of such a contact, a dual approach (experimental and numerical) is adopted. The Jérotrib test-rig enables a first study, by considering that the élastohydrodynamic torus on plane contact can be modelled by an elliptical equivalent contact. Thanks to a differential colorimetric interferometry method which was improved and adapted during the thesis, precise film thickness measurements are carried out under a rather wide range of operating conditions. A thermo-elastohydrodynamic numerical model is developed and validated by comparing its results to the ones of the test-rig. A numerical study on film forming is then proposed and the role of the contact ellipticity is investigated. The numerical model is improved in order to take into account the actual shape of the solids. A film thickness validation of the model is proposed, thanks to measurements performed on the Tribogyr test-rig. The operating conditions are very similar to the one encountered in actual bearings, and the mating solids have representative geometries: it is an actual torus-on-plane contact. It is demonstrated that the lubricant shearing is responsible for the solids temperature rise, which in its turn, reduces the film thickness. It appears mandatory to be able to predict this global warming of the bodies. It is also demonstrated that the pressure and film thickness distributions lose their symmetry because of the spinning kinematic and the solids shape. However, the behaviour of the torus-on-plane contact appears very similar to the one of an elliptical equivalent contact, apart from some limit cases.
