The specificity of Simenon : on translating 'Maigret'

Taylor, Judith Louise January 2009 (has links)
The project examines how German- and English-speaking translators of selected Maigret novels by the Belgian crime writer Georges Simenon have dealt with cultural and linguistic specificity, with a view to shedding light on how culture and language translate. Following a survey of different theories of translation, an integrated theory is applied in order to highlight what Simenon’s translators have retained and lost from three selected source texts: Le Charretier de la Providence (1931), Les Mémoires de Maigret (1951) and Maigret et les braves gens (1961). The examination of issues of linguistic and cultural specificity is facilitated by application of an integrated theory of translation coupled with the methodology devised by Hervey, Higgins and Loughridge (1992, 1995 and 2002). In addition, consideration of paradigms of detective fiction across the three cultures involved, and Simenon’s biography and wider oeuvre, help elucidate the salient features of the selected source texts. In view of the translators’ decisions, strategies for minimising various types of translation loss are presented. While other studies of translation theory have examined literary and technical texts, this study breaks new ground by focussing specifically on the comparative analysis of detective fiction in translation.

Fonctions Presque Automorphes et Applications aux EquationsDynamiques sur Time Scales / Almost automorphic functions and applications to dynamic equations on time scales.

Milce, Aril 04 December 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, we refine the notion of almost automorphic functions on time scales introduced in the literature by Lizama and Mesquita, we explore some new properties of such functions and apply the results to study the existence and uniqueness of almost automorphic solution for a new class of dynamic equations on time scales. Then we introduce the concept of almost automorphic functions of order n on time scales, we investigate the fundamental properties of these functions and we use the findings to establish the existence and uniqueness and the global stability of almost automorphic solution of one to a first order dynamical equation with finite time varying delay. Then we present the concept of asymptotically almost automorphic functions of order n on time scales. We study the properties of these functions and we use the results to prove, under suitable hypothesis, that the unique solution to a problem with initial condition is asymptotically almost automorphic of order one at the one hand, and the existence and uniqueness of asymptotically almost automorphic solution for an integro-dynamic equation with nonlocal initial conditon on time scales in other hand. Finally, using the concept of semigroup on time scales introduced by Hamza and Oraby, we generalize the results in Lizama and Mesquita's paper for abstract Banach spaces, that is, we study the existence and uniqueness of almost automorphic solution for semilinear abstract dynamic equations on time scales.

Extending convolutional neural networks to irregular domains through graph inference / Extension des réseaux de neurones convolutifs à des domaines irréguliers par l’inférence de graphe

Pasdeloup, Bastien 12 December 2017 (has links)
This manuscript sums up our work on extending convolutional neuralnetworks to irregular domains through graph inference. It consists of three main chapters, each giving the details of a part of a methodology allowing the definition of such networks to process signals evolving on graphs with unknown structures.First, graph inference from data is explored, in order to provide a graph modeling the support of the signals to classify. Second, translation operators that preserve neighborhood properties of the vertices are identified on the inferred graph. Third, these translations are used to shift a convolutional kernel on the graph in order to define a convolutional neural network that is adapted to the input data.We have illustrated our methodology on a dataset of images. While not using any particular knowledge on the signals, we have been able to infer a graph that is close to a grid. Translations on this graph resemble Euclidean translations. Therefore, this has allowed us to define an adapted convolutional neural network that is very close what one would obtain when using the information that signals are images. This network, trained on the initial data, has out performed state of the art methods by more than 13 points, while using a very simple and easily improvable architecture. The method we have introduced is a generalization of convolutional neural networks. As a matter of fact, they can be seen as aparticularization of our approach in the case where the graph is a grid. Our work thus opens the way to numerous perspectives, as it provides an efficient way to build networks that are adapted to the data.

Význam překladatelského díla Otokara Fischera v české překladatelské tradici / The Significance of Otokar Fischer's Translations for the Czech Translation Tradition

Hájek, Matouš January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores Otokar Fischer's translations and their significance for the Czech translation tradition. The theoretical part addresses the status Otokar Fischer had in his time, the ample scope of activities, both creative and academic, he engaged in as well as his problematic position at the boundary between two languages and three cultures during the unstable interwar years. Then, the focus shifts on the way secondary literature, mainly from the field of translation studies, evaluates Fischer's translations. The image of Otokar Fischer and his school of translation promoted by the said literature is subject to criticism in the next chapter which also adds information the relevant books do not emphasize enough or leave out completely. The next part assesses two of the most significant translations done by Fischer - Goehte'sFaust and Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra- and also touches upon his translation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. The last section of the thesis deals with the legacy Otokar Fischer left in the Czech translation tradition and the way his students and younger generations of translators approached this legacy.

Recepce irské literatury a dramatu v češtině / The Reception of Irish Literature and Drama in Czech Translation

Laurincová, Alžběta January 2016 (has links)
1 Abstract The main aim of the thesis is to introduce the problematics of Czech translations from Irish literature published in the Czech Lands in the period between 1945 - 2014. The author of the thesis provides the list of the authors that were translated in the Czech Lands in that period, and comments upon the literary tradition related to it. Due to the extensive amount of works, the thesis is divided into several chapters, introducing four specific periods: 1945 - 1948 (the end of WWII - the beginning of the Soviet control), 1949 - 1968 (Soviet control - the occupation of the Troops of Warsaw Pact), 1969 - 1989 (the occupation - Velvet Revolution) and 1989 - 2014 (Velvet Revolution - "Velvet Divorce" - the present day). In each chapter the historic introduction is provided mainly to foreshadow the context of the whole era. The discussion about the translations from Irish literature consists from general list of works by individual authors and comments upon their presence at the Czech literary market, the frequency of publishing, the reception of individual authors etc. The author also considers the socio-political occurences that might have influenced the final shape of the Irish-Czech literary canon, and, when possible, tries to demonstrate the extent of such influence.

Les traductions françaises du Jingu qiguan et leurs influences sur la création littéraire en France (1735-1996) / The French translations of Jingu qiguan and their literary influence in France (1735-1996)

Huang, Chunli 27 November 2015 (has links)
At the end of the Ming Dynasty, Baoweng laoren has selected forty tales of the three collections of Feng Menglong and two collections of Ling Mengchu to compile another anthology entitled Jingu qiguan 今古奇觀 (curious spectacles of today and of the past). This anthology was a huge success at the time of its publication, and is constantly reprinted for centuries until today. Today it is considered as a main representative work of Chinese literature in vernacular language. The reputation of Jingu qiguan has already exceeded the Chinese border since a long time. Since the 18th century, three tales of the Jingu qiguan were translated for the first time in Europe by a French Jesuit. Therefore, throughout the centuries, the Jingu qiguan has experienced a lot of partial translations, retranslations and adaptation across Europe. Only in French, there are about thirty translations, retranslations and rewrite of Jingu qiguan. So that leads us to wonder why these stories have constantly been translated and retranslated, or even rewritten. Who have translated them and how they have been translated? How these translations did had some influence in the local literature? This study is intended to cover all these issues.

Dancing Together Alone : Inconsistencies and Contradictions of Strategic Communication in Swedish Universities

Lövgren, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
Organizations increasingly use communication as a strategic function to maneuver in a challenging, complex, and demanding social landscape. Based on assumptions of centralized control and planning, the strategic communication concept aims for coordination and consistency of communication. Implied is a view of actors as intentional, rational, and deliberate decision makers. Such a conventional view on strategic communication, however, cannot satisfactorily explain the underlying characteristics of communication practices in contemporary organizations. Nor does it explain how organizational members in their everyday work interpret and relate to such practices. This thesis adopts neo-institutional theory and the translation approach to study how strategic communication operates along an institutionalized recipe for communication that through various translations is reformulated to fit local organizational contexts and preferences of the people occupying these contexts. To illustrate the process of both following and adapting the institutionalized recipe of strategic communication, qualitative and quantitative material on the role of social media in sixteen Swedish universities are examined. The material is generated and gathered through an ethnographically inspired approach and includes: interviews, a six-month observation period, the study of documents, and a content analysis of Vice-Chancellor blogs. The findings show that work with social media is pervaded with inconsistencies and contradictions, but simultaneously relating to a shared recipe for communication. Shared elements for communication at the universities include the purposes for communication, notion of one university and integration. However, in translations people rely on local organizational conditions, personal values, ambitions, and experiences. This produces tensions between: control and independence, centralization and decentralization, and one voice and multiple voices. The findings suggest that translations differ across universities and between communicators on different levels, some being more “true” to the recipe than others. Thus, differences are inevitable, underscoring the issues of managing and controlling communication in the conventional approach of strategic communication. As a result, the empirical and theoretical concept of strategic communication benefits from acknowledging its social embeddedness and local recontextualization. Strategic communication is like dancing to music. Everyone hears the music, but the dance varies with each dancer ́s experiences, ambitions, and opportunities. / Strategiska universitet på kunskapens marknad?
