Infinitesimal reasoning in information retrieval and trust-based recommendation systemsChowdhury, Maria 26 April 2010 (has links)
We propose preferential and trust-based frameworks for Information Retrieval and Recommender Systems, which utilize the power of Hyperreal Numbers. In the first part of our research, we propose a preferential framework for Information Retrieval which enables expressing preference annotations on search keywords and document elements, respectively. Our framework is flexible and allows expressing preferences such as “A is infinitely more preferred than B,” which we capture by using hyperreal numbers. Due to widespread use of XML as a standard for representing documents, we consider XML documents in this research and propose a consistent preferential weighting scheme for nested document elements. We show how to naturally incorporate preferences on search keywords and document elements into an IR ranking process using the well-known TF-IDF (Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency) ranking measure. In the second part of our research we propose a novel recommender system which enhances user-based collaborative filtering by using a trust-based social network. Again, we use hyperreal numbers and polynomials for capturing natural preferences in aggregating opinions of trusted users. We use these opinions to “help” users who are similar to an active user to come up with recommendations for items for which they might not have an opinion themselves. We argue that the method we propose reflects better the real life behaviour of the people. Our method is justified by the experimental results; we are the first to break a stated “barrier” of 0.73 for the mean absolute error (MAE) of the predicted ratings. Our results are based on a large, real life dataset from Epinions.com, for which, we also achieve a prediction coverage that is significantly better than that of the state-of-the-art methods.

Efficient Packet-Drop Thwarting and User-Privacy Preserving Protocols for Multi-hop Wireless NetworksMahmoud, Mohamed Mohamed Elsalih Abdelsalam 08 April 2011 (has links)
In multi-hop wireless network (MWN), the mobile nodes relay others’ packets for enabling new applications and enhancing the network deployment and performance. However, the selfish nodes drop the packets because packet relay consumes their resources without benefits, and the malicious nodes drop the packets to launch Denial-of-Service attacks. Packet drop attacks adversely degrade the network fairness and performance in terms of throughput, delay, and packet delivery ratio. Moreover, due to the nature of wireless transmission and multi-hop packet relay, the attackers can analyze the network traffic in undetectable way to learn the users’ locations in number of hops and their communication activities causing a serious threat to the users’ privacy. In this thesis, we propose efficient security protocols for thwarting packet drop attacks and preserving users’ privacy in multi-hop wireless networks.
First, we design a fair and efficient cooperation incentive protocol to stimulate the selfish nodes to relay others’ packets. The source and the destination nodes pay credits (or micropayment) to the intermediate nodes for relaying their packets. In addition to cooperation stimulation, the incentive protocol enforces fairness by rewarding credits to compensate the nodes for the consumed resources in relaying others’ packets. The protocol also discourages launching Resource-Exhaustion attacks by sending bogus packets to exhaust the intermediate nodes’ resources because the nodes pay for relaying their packets.
For fair charging policy, both the source and the destination nodes are charged when the two nodes benefit from the communication. Since micropayment protocols have been originally proposed for web-based applications, we propose a practical payment model specifically designed for MWNs to consider the significant differences between web-based applications and cooperation stimulation. Although the non-repudiation property of the public-key cryptography is essential for securing the incentive protocol, the public-key cryptography requires too complicated computations and has a long signature tag. For efficient implementation, we use the public-key cryptography only for the first packet in a series and use the efficient hashing operations for the next packets, so that the overhead of the packet series converges to that of the hashing operations. Since a trusted party is not involved in the communication sessions, the nodes usually submit undeniable digital receipts (proofs of packet relay) to a centralized trusted party for updating their credit accounts. Instead of submitting large-size payment receipts, the nodes submit brief reports containing the alleged charges and rewards and store undeniable security evidences. The payment of the fair reports can be cleared with almost no processing overhead. For the cheating reports, the evidences are requested to identify and evict the cheating nodes. Since the cheating actions are exceptional, the proposed protocol can significantly reduce the required bandwidth and energy for submitting the payment data and clear the payment with almost no processing overhead while achieving the same security strength as the receipt-based protocols.
Second, the payment reports are processed to extract financial information to reward the cooperative nodes, and contextual information such as the broken links to build up a trust system to measure the nodes’ packet-relay success ratios in terms of trust values. A node’s trust value is degraded whenever it does not relay a packet and improved whenever it does. A node is identified as malicious and excluded from the network once its trust value reaches to a threshold. Using trust system is necessary to keep track of the nodes’ long-term behaviors because the network packets may be dropped normally, e.g., due to mobility, or temporarily, e.g., due to network congestion, but the high frequency of packet drop is an obvious misbehavior. Then, we propose a trust-based and energy-aware routing protocol to route traffics through the highly trusted nodes having sufficient residual energy in order to establish stable routes and thus minimize the probability of route breakage. A node’s trust value is a real and live measurement to the node’s failure probability and mobility level, i.e., the low-mobility nodes having large hardware resources can perform packet relay more efficiently. In this way, the proposed protocol stimulates the nodes not only to cooperate but also to improve their packet-relay success ratio and tell the truth about their residual energy to improve their trust values and thus raise their chances to participate in future routes.
Finally, we propose a privacy-preserving routing and incentive protocol for hybrid ad hoc wireless network. Micropayment is used to stimulate the nodes’ cooperation without submitting payment receipts. We only use the lightweight hashing and symmetric-key-cryptography operations to preserve the users’ privacy. The nodes’ pseudonyms are efficiently computed using hashing operations. Only trusted parties can link these pseudonyms to the real identities for charging and rewarding operations. Moreover, our protocol protects the location privacy of the anonymous source and destination nodes.
Extensive analysis and simulations demonstrate that our protocols can secure the payment and trust calculation, preserve the users’ privacy with acceptable overhead, and precisely identify the malicious and the cheating nodes. Moreover, the simulation and measurement results demonstrate that our routing protocols can significantly improve route stability and thus the packet delivery ratio due to stimulating the selfish nodes’ cooperation, evicting the malicious nodes, and making informed decisions regarding route selection. In addition, the processing and submitting overheads of the payment-reports are incomparable with those of the receipts in the receipt-based incentive protocols. Our protocol also requires incomparable overhead to the signature-based protocols because the lightweight hashing operations dominate the nodes’ operations.

Recommender systems have played an important role in different application contexts (e.g recommendation of products, movies, music, books, among others). They automatically suggest each user items that may be relevant, preventing the user having to analyze a huge amount of items to make your choice. Collaborative filtering (CF) is the most popular approach for building recommendation systems, although suffering with sparsity of the data-related issues (eg, users or items with few evaluations). In this study, we investigated the combination of CF techniques represented by matrix factorization technique, and trust-based recommendation techniques (TBR) on social networks to alleviate the problem of data sparseness. TBR systems have in fact proven to be effective to increase the quality of the recommendations, especially for users with few assessments already carried out (e.g., cold start users). However, the relative performance between CF and TBR techniques may depend on the amount of useful information contained in the databases. In the proposed architecture in this work, the predictions generated by CF and TBR techniques are weighted combined through sparsity measures calculated to users and items. To do this, first we define a set of sparsity measures that will be calculated on the matrix of ratings users-items and matrix of trust users-users. Through experiments using Epinions database, we note that the proposed combination brought an improvement in error rates and coverage compared to combined techniques.

In 2014, the municipality of Söderhamn initiated a new control and management philosophy, characterized by core values such as increased citizen focus, employee commitment and trust in all operative aspects. These values are the same as the core values of Total Quality Management and leadership for change. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain more knowledge about the work involved in implementing the management philosophy as well as the experiences of senior management. Eight managers were interviewed. These semi-structured interviews were then transcribed and collected, after which the empiricism has been interpreted from a hermeneutic perspective based on the theoretical framework of the study. The results indicate that the change process is complex and the leaders have interpreted the guiding values differently, leading to the conclusion that there are differences in the degree of matureness between individuals as well as within the organisation. Moreover, the financial steering in the municipality is not yet accustomed to the new philosophy/ management. The authors conclude that the concepts characterizing the values of the municipality easily become abstract and are hard to implement in practise and, furthermore, there is capacity for improvement in the implementation work. / <p>2017-06-28</p>

Sweden has had clear problems with its governance of the welfare sector because of incentives that can be obtained from NPM. This mainly in forms of performance management that has centralized the authority with recurring reporting requirements. To overcome these problems, measures were taken to promote a new governance. At present, the form of trust-based governance has seen the light of day. This includes a governance, culture and working method with focus on the purpose of the organisation and the needs of the user. The following study was intended to provide a thorough picture of experiences regarding governance within a municipal healthcare administration, in relation to an ideal of trust-based governance. This with an intention to produce knowledge about how governance is experienced within a municipal healthcare administration and to contribute to the development of governance within it. The study was based on qualitative interviews with four first line managers, whose experiences where compared to an ideal of trust-based governance. The results show that the combined experiences of governance largely correspond to an ideal of trust-based governance. Under those terms the study indicates that there are experiences which can be deduced from an ideal of trust-based governance. Furthermore, there are incentives which can be deduced from NPM. The interviewees responses indicate that the administration is regarded as value-driven with perceptions of good leadership, which creates conditions for developing the trust-based governance within it. Finally, the study, based on the responses, has resulted in several experienced aspects for the continued development of the trust-based governance within the administration. The results should only be indications of how governance is experienced and how the form of governance can be developed. All because the responses in many sentences differ and not reflects an overall perceived image.

Aboriginal peoples are highly resilient to many physical and psychosocial health issues. Intergenerational trauma from past and current colonization is seen as one of the explanations for these difficulties, coupled with a lack of services to address the determinants of well-being involved. To address these challenges, community-based approaches that promote empowerment and self-governance are recommended. Non-Aboriginal stakeholders are involved in supporting community mobilization and their contribution can be substantial. Nevertheless, it seems essential to decolonize interventions, particularly by carrying out an introspection on one's own presence and impact in an indigenous context. In the first part, an ethnographic analysis of my process as a young student-researcher will be carried out and will allow an analysis of the feelings, tensions, questions and reflections that shaped this thesis. Then, the results of phenomenological qualitative analysis of five interviews conducted with non-Inuit stakeholders working in Nunavik or Nunavut will be presented. The analysis of these verbatim will have made it possible to highlight the speaker's considerations in relation to themselves and in relation to the communities, from a decolonial perspective. The inductive qualitative analysis of a focus group conducted with Inuit stakeholders will then be presented, validating some considerations. This study will have supported the importance of self-knowledge and the recognition of invisible privileges of non-aboriginal people in relation to past and current history of colonization, in order to meet the needs of communities as a priority through the establishment of meaningful and lasting trust-based relationships.

Public sector is facing an ongoing change in work towards introducing trust-based governance in public operations. Trust-based governance is a relationship-based form of governance where informal management controls such as social work and corporate culture are used to create trust and goal congruence. But at the same time as the change in work is ongoing, the corona pandemic is causing businesses to switch to teleworking. This case study aims to increase the knowledge of how telework affects the use of trust-based governance and how it affects the ongoing change in work. This is done by a qualitative method that studies how managers in the public sector experience that teleworking affects the use of trust-based governance. The results show that teleworking has a negative impact on the use of trust-based governance in the form of a chain effect where impaired communication during teleworking has a negative effect on relationships, motivation and corporate culture. This in turn damages trust and goal congruence negatively. But the study shows mitigating circumstances that reduce the negative impact. Through increased reconciliation calls and extracurricular activities, the negative effect on informal management controls can be limited which improves the use of informal management controls while teleworking. But it requires extra work by managers to maintain the effect of informal management controls in a digital context. The results of the study also show that teleworking gives a boost in the change in work towards trust-based governance since digital working methods naturally make managers reduce their supervision and exercise trust. On the other hand, the results show difficulties in using informal management controls digitally to create trust and goal congruence. But with extra dialogues and activities the conditions for effectively using informal management controls digitally are improved.

This Bachelor's thesis focuses on trust as an organizational phenomenon, more specifically, thedyadic trust development and dynamics in the relationship between leader and follower withinSwedish public organizations when the workplace is virtual. The study applies a qualitativemethod with a relational perspective on leadership and trust, drawing on trust theory, leadershiptheory and research in both virtual trust and virtual leadership. The study includes data fromleaders and followers in two Swedish public organizations collected in semi-structuredinterviews. The main contribution of this study is the model that is presented which is based onthe empirical material and on a pre-existing model of trust including integrity, benevolence andability, and on current research in trust and leadership in virtual environments. According tothis model, the use of communication, body language, conversations that build relationships, technical aids and a balance between control and support are of importance to trust in virtualsettings. The study also demonstrates differences between how leaders and followers perceivethe balance between control and support. The findings imply for managerial leadership thatraising the level of awareness of trust development in virtual settings is crucial, because leadersmay act with the intent of increasing the level of support but end up decreasing the level of trustwhen the follower interprets the act as increased control. This may affect the ability to apply atrust-based leadership in virtual settings, which is, because of the work by the governmentappointed Trust-delegation, what many Swedish public organizations today have the ambitionto do. The model that is presented in this study can be used as a tool when working with trustand open up to future research.

Distance leadership has become a more important aspect in several parts of the public sector as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and its restrictions. Trust-based governance has been a discussed form of governance that political decision-makers have tried to implement in the public sector. The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate how leadership has been affected in the public sector as a result of the fast readjustment to work from distance and how the trust has been affected. The intention is to identify opportunities and challenges of distance leadership and how the work of trust is being affected when the workplace is disconnected from the physical workplace. The empirically collected material consists of interviews with 17 leaders who are active in various parts of the public sector in the region of Västra Götaland. All managers have responsibility over employees and have for the most part performed their work on distance during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results from the data collection from the interviews showed that the managers have experienced both opportunities and challenges during the distance work. The greatest opportunities were considered to be the increased flexibility in the working day, increased trust and higher presence from the managers during the workday. The challenges have been to manage the boundary between working hours and a private life, to maintain good relations when an important part of the social interaction disappears and needs to be replaced, to discover employees' moods and to adapt communication to the changed conditions. Linked to trust, managers felt that it had increased. Furthermore, the sudden change had contributed to a more trust-based governance being easier to implement and be a natural part of everyday work. A concluding reflection in the study is that an awareness, alternative communication paths and an increased emotional and individual focus may reduce these risks. Another reflection is that trust has a central role in creating a prosperous working group and a more trust-based governance is something that has been experienced positively in the businesses. In conclusion, we can state that distance leadership and trust building is a process that requires a lot of resources and needs to be maintained over time. This thesis is going to be written in Swedish.

Uppföljning inom ramen för tillitsbaserad styrning i kommunal verksamhet : En jämförande studie av åtta kommuner / Follow-up within the framework of trust-based governance i municipal activities : A comparative study of eight municipalitiesLundin, Hanna January 2023 (has links)
Municipal government operations are in ongoing work with the implementation of the trust-based governance. Some of Sweden´s municipalities have come further than others, which is due to several different reasons. Some municipalities use their own forms of governance but adhere to trust-based governance to some extent. Follow-ups with a trust-based approach are important for the work to continue moving in the right direction. This study intends to identify similarities and differences in how the municipalities work with trust-based governance with follow-up as the focus. The study has been carried out in eight different municipalities based on interviews, as well as an observation. Researcher Louise Bringselius´ basic principles have been used in the analysis. The study´s results have identified similarities between the municipalities that are in line with the basic principles from the theoretical frame of reference. The result also shows how municipalities work based on the implementation of trust-based governance and it´s challenges in follow-ups within the framework of trust-based governance.
