The Quantum Dialectic

Kelley, Logan 15 May 2011 (has links)
A philosophic account of quantum physics. The thesis is divided into two parts. Part I is dedicated to laying the groundwork of quantum physics, and explaining some of the primary difficulties. Subjects of interest will include the principle of locality, the quantum uncertainty principle, and Einstein's criterion for reality. Quantum dilemmas discussed include the double-slit experiment, observations of spin and polarization, EPR, and Bell's theorem. The first part will argue that mathematical-physical descriptions of the world fall short of explaining the experimental observations of quantum phenomenon. The problem, as will be argued, is framework of the physical descriptive schema. Part I includes in-depth discussions of mathematical principles. Part II will discuss the Copenhagen interpretation as put forth by its founders. The Copenhagen interpretation will be expressed as a paradox: The classical physical language cannot describe quantum phenomenon completely and with certainty, yet this language is the only possible method of articulating the physical world. The paradox of Copenhagen will segway into Kant's critique of metaphysics. Kant's understanding of causality, things-in-themselves, and a priori synthetic metaphysics. The thesis will end with a conclusion of the quantum paradox by juxtaposing anti-materialist Martin Heidegger with quantum founder Werner Heisenberg. Our conclusion will be primarily a discussion of how we understand the world, and specifically how our understanding of the world creates potential for truth.

Princip komplementarity ve fyzice a jeho role při přípravě odborníků v oblasti ochrany obyvatelstva / Complementarity principle in Physics and its role at experts preparation in the area of population protection

ČECH, František January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis on the application of logical, empirical and statistical methods defined the role of the complementarity principle in the preparation of experts in the field of the protection of population in the framework of a quantitative research. The complementarity principle is characterized in the thesis in general (working with two expressions, both of them are necessary to explain the nature of the problem but cannot be used simultaneously, e.g. expressions "analysis" and "synthesis"). The diploma thesis then defined the physical aspect of the complementarity principle the wave-corpuscular dualism, the position and the momentum, the energy and the time. The comparison of the basics of the protection of population with the structure of the physical aspect of the complementarity principle followed. The performed comparison was adjusted to the needs and possibilities of future experts in the field of the protection of population on the basis of the theory of the curriculum process. The steps are clear from the set of objectives which were fulfilled gradually in the thesis: 1) To systematically describe the general form of the complementarity principle and its physical application from the point of view of the theory of the curriculum process. 2) To create a structure of the system of emergencies from the point of view of a scientific field of the protection of population and to focus on its educational aspect for the preparation of experts. 3) To perform the comparison of the physical aspect and emergencies with the general form of the complementarity principle. To transfer the findings, a theory of curriculum process was used. The link between a more generally approached complementarity principle and the protection of population was explained in the framework of a conceptual curriculum. The theory connecting these two different fields is the more generally approached complementarity principle and especially Bohr's complementarity principle linking not only the wave-corpuscular dualism but also Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. The physical aspect of emergencies was adjusted to the possibilities and needs of students (the intended curriculum) and written down in an educational text which was provided to students (the project curriculum). The practicality of the educational test was verified by an educational test the results of which were statistically processed (implemented curriculum). The statistical analysis of the test results confirmed the second hypothesis of this work. "The knowledge of future experts in the field of the protection of population will have, from the point of view of the role of the complementarity principle in their preparation, a theoretical division which will be close to the normal division." By confirming this hypothesis, the correctness and applicability of the curriculum process were confirmed as it was assumed by the first hypothesis: "Using the stages of a curriculum process, an educational basis of the role of the complementarity principle can be created within a quantitative research." The contributions of this work can be summarized by following points: 1) The use of an educational text in the preparation of experts in the field of the protection of population (a practical contribution of this diploma thesis). 2) The improvement of the applicability of the theory of the curriculum process in the field of the protection of population which has not been researched so far (the improvement of the theory of the curriculum process). 3) The definition of the link of the physical aspect of the complementarity principle to the general form of this principle (the theoretical contribution of this diploma thesis).

Moraes, Celso Francisco de January 2020 (has links)
Conceptual understanding of quantum mechanics : an investigation into physics students' depictions of the basic concepts of quantum mechanics

Ejigu, Mengesha Ayene 07 1900 (has links)
Not only is Quantum Mechanics (QM) conceptually rich, it is also a theory that physics students have found abstract and technically formidable. Nevertheless, compared to other classical topics of physics, university students’ understanding of QM has received minimal attention in the physics education literature. The principal purpose of this study was to characterize the variation in the ways that undergraduate physics students depict the basic concepts of QM and to extrapolate the results to scaffold possible changes to instructional practices at the university that provided the context for the study. In so doing, an adaptation of a developmental phenomenographic perspective was chosen. Empirically, the study was approached through in-depth interviews with 35 physics students from two Ethiopian governmental universities after they had been exposed to the traditional QM course for one-third of a semester. Interview responses were analyzed using phenomenographic approach where a picture of students’ depictions was established for each quantum concept by expounding the given responses. For each basic quantum concept addressed, the structure of the description categories was separately constructed, and overall, it was found that naive, quasi-classical ontology and/or variants of classical ways of visualization are dominant in students’ responses. For example, it was found that students’ depictions of the photon concept could be described with three distinct categories of description, which are (a) classical intuitive description, (b) mixed model description and (c) quasi-quantum model description. Similarly, the findings revealed that it is possible to establish three qualitatively different categories of description to picture students’ depictions of matter waves, namely, (a) classical and trajectory-based description, (b) an intricate blend of classical and quantum description and (c) incipient quantum model description. Likewise, it was found that students’ depictions of uncertainty principle can be described as: (a) uncertainty as classical ignorance, (b) uncertainty as measurement disturbance and (c) uncertainty as a quasi-quantum principle. With regard to learning QM, the categories of description made clear several issues: most students did not have enough knowledge to depict the basic concepts of QM properly; they were influenced by the perspective of classical physics and their perceptions in making explanations about QM; and they also applied mixed ideas, one based on their classical model and the other from newly introduced QM. These results are also supported by the findings of previous studies in similar domains. Findings from the study were used to guide the design of multiple representations-based instructions and interactive learning tutorials on the conceptual aspects of QM that has been shown to address specific difficulties identified in the study. Theoretical and practical implications of the study, as well as potential future considerations are drawn. / Mathematics, Science and Technology Education / D. Phil. Contribution à la théorie des ondelettes : application à la turbulence des plasmas de bord de Tokamak et à la mesure dimensionnelle de cibles / Contribution to the wavelet theory : Application to edge plasma turbulence in tokamaks and to dimensional measurement of targets

Scipioni, Angel 19 November 2010 (has links)
The necessary scale-based representation of the world leads us to explain why the wavelet theory is the best suited formalism. Its performances are compared to other tools: R/S analysis and empirical modal decomposition method (EMD). The great diversity of analyzing bases of wavelet theory leads us to propose a morphological approach of the analysis. The study is organized into three parts. The first chapter is dedicated to the constituent elements of wavelet theory. Then we will show the surprising link existing between recurrence concept and scale analysis (Daubechies polynomials) by using Pascal's triangle. A general analytical expression of Daubechies' filter coefficients is then proposed from the polynomial roots. The second chapter is the first application domain. It involves edge plasmas of tokamak fusion reactors. We will describe how, for the first time on experimental signals, the Hurst coefficient has been measured by a wavelet-based estimator. We will detail from fbm-like processes (fractional Brownian motion), how we have established an original model perfectly reproducing fBm and fGn joint statistics that characterizes magnetized plasmas. Finally, we will point out the reasons that show the lack of link between high values of the Hurst coefficient and possible long correlations. The third chapter is dedicated to the second application domain which is relative to the backscattered echo analysis of an immersed target insonified by an ultrasonic plane wave. We will explain how a morphological approach associated to a scale analysis can extract the diameter information
