US elite discourse on the EU as a security actor

Byrne, Andrew January 2016 (has links)
Constructivist accounts of the EU’s emergence as a security actor typically focus on changing conceptions of the Union’s role within a European context, at both national and EU levels. But few studies have analysed how significant Others in the international system understand the EU’s evolving role, which is assumed to play an important role in EU identity construction. This thesis analyses the nature of the US elite’s discourse on the EU, assessing the relative influence of factors - internal and external to the elite - in shaping its evaluations of EU security action. The study adopts a discursive institutionalist approach exploring how differing ideas about the EU are expressed and modifying this framework to examine how agents purposefully shape discourse in line with their preferences. By adapting the framework to focus on competing elite sub-groups, the project seeks to analyse discursive attempts at institutional change in greater detail. The study employed a qualitative content analysis of more than 100 texts produced by an ideologically and institutionally representative group of American foreign policy analysts and officials, in two cases: common foreign and security policy (CFSP) and counter terrorism cooperation. Public and classified official texts in the public domain were analysed to compare coordinative and communicative discourse. The findings indicate that ideological cleavages are mirrored in distinct narrative accounts of EU, which cross cut the Union’s differing security policy competence levels. While perceptions of European disunity and weakness dominated both conservative and liberal accounts, conservative analysts continued to portray EU security integration as threatening to US interests, a theme which has declined in importance in mainstream official discourse since the early 2000s. Empirically, the thesis provides a rich analysis of discourse on the EU in a context with significance both for scholars and policymakers concerned with external perceptions of the EU as a security actor. It provides a novel assessment of how American officials’ assessments of the EU differ in public and in private. By analysing the discursive tactics of influential elite sub-groups, it reveals an arena for competing accounts of the EU in which the Union’s differing policy competences are overshadowed by the elite’s ideological cleavages.

Multilateralism and the constitution of international organizations are phenomena related to the construction of an international order, in which the search for the elaboration of rules of coexistence between nations is imperative. The phenomena arise and develop in a practically joint way, more specifically in the late nineteenth century: therefore the two phenomena are closely linked to one another. Thus, this dissertation has as main objective to make a brief historical rescue of the concept of multilateralism and international organizations, through reference authors, in order to understand the difficulties of implementing these principles that should permeate the system according to this logic. In the conclusions we will point out that the difficulties of implementing multilateralism are mainly related to the unpredictability, uncertainty and distrust between countries.

As a methodology, was used the film analysis of It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), to observe what kind of American way of life the cinema of classic narrative structure would be insert in its production, with the intention of spreading the american way of life without breaking the moral rules already established by the codes of censorship imposed at the time and that until now, in contemporary times, are in force. US culture, politics, and economics were discussed in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, periods selected for their relevance in the making of myths and turning points in American history; Americanism as a way of life; Fordism; and Hollywood cinema, for being the one of the pioneering mass media that collaborated with the forms of Americanization not only within the US but throughout the world.

A questão da mulher e a ordem social: o humor em Dorothy Parker / Question of the women and social order: the humor in Dorothy Parker

Juliana Rosenthal Knoepfelmacher 16 February 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyse Dorothy Parker´s short stories in dialogue with her poems in order to show the modernity of her writings and the function played by humour. Analysing the works of the great american writer in the thirties, we see how humour is used as a tool in the construction of the feminine and the social role of women, with the purpose of destabilizing and making a change in the status quo. The theoretical framework based on Vladimir Propp and Henri Bergson helps to demonstrate that in spite of Dorothy Parker´s work being considered dated by some, the satiric sense that emerges from her writings is still present in our times and reveals the context in which those women were inserted.

O relacionamento Brasil - EUA e a arquitetura moderna: experiências compartilhadas, 1939-1959 / The relationship Brazil - USA and the Modern Architecture: shared experiences, 1939 - 1959

Débora da Rosa Rodrigues Lima Hormain 09 November 2012 (has links)
The doctoral thesis examines the relationship in question, the experiences and professional exchanges occurred between the Brazilian and American architects (or immigrants in North America) in a period that extends from the recognition of Brazilian modern architecture at the international level, between late 1930s and early forties, through the second post-war until the early 1960s. Many were the exchanges between the two countries, often undeserved in detriment of those that occurred with the European continent, and in this paper we give space and seek their understanding. So the focus of the research was to demonstrate that other fronts of dialogue have been consolidated, just as the modern architecture that was done in Brazil was also beginning to dialogue internationally, and within this framework, the United States of America, new cultural center of the world, played a key role. Assuming that the relationship between Brazil and the United States was instrumental in the process, dissemination and strengthening of Brazilian modernism at the international level, the objective of the work was to understand, through the identification of the characters and analysis of the experiences and exchanges between the two countries, how these events have focused on the Brazilian architectural field. The theme was developed from a synthetic view of the interaction between the historiography of the modern movement and the historical and cultural context in which professional architects were inserted at that precise moment in history.

Komparace vybraných aspektů právní úpravy otroctví a jeho zrušení v USA a ve Velké Británii / Comparison of certain aspects of legal regulation of slavery and its abolition in the USA and in Great Britain

Brilová, Alžběta January 2016 (has links)
1 COMPARISON OF CERTAIN ASPECTS OF LEGAL REGULATION OF SLAVERY AND ITS ABOLITION IN THE USA AND IN GREAT BRITAIN Resumé This thesis deals with legal regulation of slavery in Great Britain and the United states of America and also with its abolition. The first part of the thesis is theoretical. At the beginning, it describes the concepts of "slavery", "slave society" and "abolition". This is followed by the brief history of slavery, from the ancient society, through the Middle Ages, to slavery in North America. The end of this chapter briefly discusses the legal aspects of slavery in general, and the influence of the Enlightenment and Christianity on the perception of slavery. The second part focuses on situation in various geographic regions and some legal phenomena relating to slavery. The regions covered include England, specific for fact that slavery was abandoned there as early as in the 12th century and has never had any legislative background, together with India and the Caribbean as two examples of the opposite ends of the spectrum - while in the Caribbean slavery still constitutes a determining social element, in India the effects of slavery are surprisingly "negligible". The next section deals with other Britain's colonies and the characteristics of North American continent, and situation in the...

Relationship between Stock Returns and Net Income: Evidence from U.S. Market / Relationship between Stock Returns and Net Income: Evidence from U.S. Market

Kolář, Michal January 2017 (has links)
It is important to know if earnings variables influence stock returns. This is important not just for investors who want to know what drives stock returns, but also for the overall economy as stock returns and stock markets are also considered to be significant indicators of its performance. Many studies were conducted in the past but with inconclusive results. The aim of the thesis is to examine the relationship between net income and stock returns using two approaches, namely panel data model and multiple linear regression. We utilize a dataset of companies selected from the S&P500 Index. We also analyse possible heterogeneity in cross section and time. Moreover, we incorporate additional factors which have been proven to have significant explanation power for stock returns. Our findings from the panel data estimation suggest that there is no relationship between scaled net income and stock returns. We find there are random effects present between the companies and three structural breaks in time. Furthermore, we explore the significance of the consumer sentiment index and the percentage change in the book value per share variables in the panel estimation. We do not confirm the debt to equity ratio and the GDP growth news factors in the panel estimation as significant. Results concerning the...
