Space--Time Computation of Wind-Turbine Aerodynamics With Higher-Order Functions in TimeMcIntyre, Spenser 16 September 2013 (has links)
This thesis is on the space--time variational multiscale (ST-VMS) computation of wind-turbine rotor and tower aerodynamics. The rotor geometry is that of the NREL 5MW offshore baseline wind turbine. We compute with a given wind speed and a specified rotor speed. The computation is challenging because of the large Reynolds numbers and rotating turbulent flows, and computing the correct torque requires an accurate and meticulous numerical approach. The presence of the tower increases the computational challenge because of the fast, rotational relative motion between the rotor and tower. The ST-VMS method is the residual-based VMS version of the Deforming-Spatial-Domain/Stabilized ST (DSD/SST) method, and is also called ``DSD/SST-VMST'' method (i.e., the version with the VMS turbulence model). In calculating the stabilization parameters embedded in the method, we are using a new element length definition for the diffusion-dominated limit. The DSD/SST method, which was introduced as a general-purpose moving-mesh method for computation of flows with moving interfaces, requires a mesh update method. Mesh update typically consists of moving the mesh for as long as possible and remeshing as needed. In the computations reported here, NURBS basis functions are used for the temporal representation of the rotor motion, enabling us to represent the circular paths associated with that motion exactly and specify a constant angular velocity corresponding to the invariant speeds along those paths. In addition, temporal NURBS basis functions are used in representation of the motion and deformation of the volume meshes computed and also in remeshing. We name this ``ST/NURBS Mesh Update Method (STNMUM).'' The STNMUM increases computational efficiency in terms of computer time and storage, and computational flexibility in terms of being able to change the time-step size of the computation. We use layers of thin elements near the blade surfaces, which undergo rigid-body motion with the rotor. We compare the results from computations with and without tower, and we also compare using NURBS and linear finite element basis functions in temporal representation of the mesh motion.

Methodology for knowledge-based engineering template update : focus on decision support and instances updateKuhn, Olivier 22 October 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The present Ph.D. thesis addresses the problem of knowledge-based engineering template update in product design. The reuse of design knowledge has become a key asset for the company's competitiveness. Knowledge-based engineering templates allow to store best practices and knowhow via formulas, rules, scripts, etc. This design knowledge can then be reused by instantiating the template. The instantiation results in the creation of an instance of the template in the specified context. In the scope of complex and large products, such as cars or aircrafts, the maintenance of knowledge-based engineering templates is a challenging task. Several engineers from various disciplines work together and make evolve the templates in order to extend their capabilities or to fix bugs. Furthermore, in some cases, the modifications applied to templates should be forwarded to their instances in order that they benefit from the changes. These issues slow down the adoption of template technologies at a large scale within companies. The objective of this work is to propose an approach in order to support engineers in the template update related tasks. In order to address these issues, a process supporting the template update related tasks is defined. Then a framework is proposed that helps design engineers during the template update process by providing a decision support system and a strategy for the update of template instances. The former is a system designed to ease the collaboration between various experts in order to solve template related problems. The latter aims at providing a sequence of updates to follow, in order to forward the templates' modifications to their instances. This sequence is computed with data extracted from models and templates, which are stored in an ontology designed for this purpose. The ontology is used to represent and to infer knowledge about templates, products and their relations. This facilitates the construction of update sequences as it provides an efficient overview of relationships, even implicit ones.

The aim of this work is studying a particular case of cutting and packing problem, so-called the Manufacturer’s Pallet Loading Problem. Initially, a formulation proposed in the literature is evaluated with a computer package. Subsequently, the lagrangian and surrogate heuristics are studied and a method to update the surrogate multiplier is adapted for this problem. The importance of studying the manufacturer’s pallet loading problem is that, due to the scale and scope of some logistics systems, a small increase in the number of products to be loaded on each pallet can result in substantial savings. The motivation of studying the proposed method of updating the surrogate multipliers is that, besides the adaptation of this work has not been carried out in the literature, further application of heuristics within a procedure branch and bound can yield better results than other heuristics.

On the Static Analysis for SPARQL Queries using Modal Logic / Sur l'analyse statique des requêtes SPARQL avec la logique modaleGuido, Nicola 03 December 2015 (has links)
Static analysis is a core task in query optimization and knowledge base verification. We study static analysis techniques for SPARQL, the standard language for querying Semantic Web data. Specifically, we investigate the query containment problem and the query-update independence analysis. We are interested in developing techniques through reductions to the validity problem in logic. We address SPARQL query containment with optional matching. We focus on the class of well-designed SPARQL queries, proposed in the literature as a fragment of the language with good properties regarding query evaluation. SPARQL is interpreted over graphs, hence we encode it in a graph logic, specifically the modal logic K interpreted over label transition systems. We show that this logic is powerful enough to deal with query containment for the well-designed fragment of SPARQL. We show how to translate RDF graphs into transition systems and SPARQL queries into K-formulae. Therefore, query containment in SPARQL can be reduced to unsatisfiability in K.We also report on a preliminary overview of the SPARQL query-update problem. A query is independent of an update when the execution of the update does not affect the result of the query. Determining independence is especially useful in the contest of huge RDF repositories, where it permits to avoid expensive yet useless re-evaluation of queries. While this problem has been intensively studied for fragments of relational calculus, no works exist for the standard query language for the semantic web. We report on our investigations on how a notion of independence can be defined in the SPARQL context

Širokospektrálna radiačná schéma plne interagujúca s oblačnosťou / Broadband radiation scheme fully interacting with cloudsMašek, Ján January 2017 (has links)
The parameterization of radiative transfer is a part of numerical weather prediction and general circulation models that is both essential and computationally very expensive, and is therefore subject to neverending compromises between accuracy and computational cost. The present thesis offers an improvement to the existing broadband radiation scheme by revising its critical components - gaseous transmissions, cloud optical properties, and calculation of internal longwave exchanges. The accuracy of the fullspectrum broadband approach is thus raised to the level required for the short range numerical weather forecast. The intermittent update of broadband gaseous transmissions is introduced as a new component, reducing computational cost while preserving the full cloudradiation interaction. The scalability of longwave computations is ensured by adopting the net exchanged rate decomposition with bracketing, improved by an intermittently applied selflearning algorithm determining the interpolation weights. It has been demonstrated that under conditions of operational weather forecasting, this developed scheme is fully competitive with the mainstream approach, due to the improved error balance between the...

In this study a review of the problems observed in rainfall-runoff modeling has been made, which influence the uncertainty of initial conditions of flow forecasting processes, as well as a review of the state of the art of some of the short-term flow forecasting models used in Brazil and the data update methodologies used in many past jobs. However the focus of this study has been the development of a data entry update methodology based on the correction of the deviation between the output flow of a hydrological model and the observed flow, by means of the disruption of rainfall input data. The case study is composed of the three river basins: River Ijuí, River Tesouras and Canoas. These basins have been chosen due to their different characteristics, both physical and climate, besides having been used in previous studies of the hydrological model used. The evaluation process of the method is done in three steps: 1) using synthetic series; 2) using real series; 3) stream flow forecasting with data update, the first two with the model in update mode ("off-line") and the last in predict mode ("on-line"). For the application of this method is necessary to establish stopping conditions for application, and for this have been proposed two sets of stop criteria. With this, intended to establish an appropriate set of criteria so that they become fixed to permit future applications in other models. The short-term flow forecasting technique used has been based on the forecast rain, adopted the rain forecast known or perfect. Predictions have been generated daily up to 7 days, for 20 consecutive days, choosing two events of different features in each case study basins. In predict mode the results have been promissory, the desired goal initially achieved by the two sets of proposed stopping criteria. It was possible to have a significant gain until the fourth day forecast also improvements in periods of hydrograph increases but not during periods of drought the gain was almost nil. This work has also showed the ability to generate predictions of rain forecast based flow as the IPH II model in real time.
