The Role of Technology Shifts in Urban Decarbonization Modelling : Scenario creation and implementation

Fourniols, Batiste January 2024 (has links)
This work includes modelling of decarbonization scenarios at the scale of an urban area, providing policy insights and a methodology focusing on introducing district heating and maintaining the existing gas distribution network in a case study. With a focus on reducing gas consumption in the residential and tertiary sectors, the research integrates scenario developments giving a methodology to develop district heating, requiring a careful balance in selecting the optimal scale for city-wide analysis. The study assesses the fate of existing gas networks. The development of district heating can affect the use of gas, particularly in residential or tertiary buildings. This thesis assesses potential use cases of existing gas networks by identifying certain criteria. Among them are industrial, tertiary or residential consumption, the presence of a district heating network, or the number of homes using individual gas heating. These criteria make it possible to define areas where the question of removing the gas distribution network can be raised, and other areas where the gas distribution network must be retained even if gas consumption falls sharply between 2019 and 2050. By reviewing the relevant literature, detailing the research questions and presenting a comprehensive methodology of scenario modelling, the thesis provides policy insights and a methodology to develop district heating at the scale of an urban area while addressing the future of existing gas infrastructure.

Path Inference of Sparse GPS Probes for Urban Networks : Methods and Applications

Rahmani, Mahmood January 2012 (has links)
The application of GPS probes in traffic management is growing rapidly as the required data collection infrastructure is increasingly in place in urban areas with significant number of mobile sensors moving around covering expansive areas of the road network. Most travelers carry with them at least one device with a built-in GPS receiver. Furthermore, vehicles are becoming more and more location aware. Currently, systems that collect floating car data are designed to transmit the data in a limited form and relatively infrequently due to the cost of data transmission. That means the reported locations of vehicles are far apart in time and space. In order to extract traffic information from the data, it first needs to be matched to the underlying digital road network. Matching such sparse data to the network, especially in dense urban, area is challenging. This thesis introduces a map-matching and path inference algorithm for sparse GPS probes in urban networks. The method is utilized in a case study in Stockholm and showed robustness and high accuracy compared to a number of other methods in the literature. The method is used to process floating car data from 1500 taxis in Stockholm City. The taxi data had been ignored because of its low frequency and minimal information. The proposed method showed that the data can be processed and transformed into information that is suitable for traffic studies. The thesis implemented the main components of an experimental ITS laboratory, called iMobility Lab. It is designed to explore GPS and other emerging traffic and traffic-related data for traffic monitoring and control. / <p>QC 20121107</p>

A área urbana e as áreas naturais da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo: de compartimentos fisiográficos a categorias geográficas / The urban area and natural areas of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo: from physiographic subdivisions to geographic categories

Bueno, Eduardo Silva 04 October 2013 (has links)
The goal of this research was to investigate the relationship between the urbanization and the sedimentary and crystalline lands in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP). In order to achieve this, two types of areas were identified: an area with urban character, and areas with natural character. The first is the one which contains all or most of a specific spatial shape, the metropolitan area, occurring in the majority of the sedimentary and associated crystalline lands (with widespread planning). The latter are characterized by the predominance of the greenbelt, which surrounds the metropolitan area, occurring on the crystalline lands not associated to the sedimentary ones. The greenbelt areas neither have widespread planning, nor contain sedimentary lands that could facilitate their urbanization. Another goal was to demonstrate that such organization is reproduced through actions of spatial character, which are here understood as the establishment and proposition of spatial units over time. Once such organization was identified and demonstrated, it was used as a base to propose the division of the MRSP in sectors with different priorities for the greenbelt conservation. In order to do so, the Regional Method of Richard Hartshorne (1978), that proposes a relationship between the Idiographic and Nomothetic Geography, was articulated. This approach involved the utilization of spatial samples located in the City of São Paulo, well representative of all the transition and differentiation between environments associated to the metropolitan area and to the greenbelt. In every sample, specific spatial integrations were performed, and from their comparison it was identified a parameter associated to the occurrence of the metropolitan area. This parameter was associated to the delimitation and configuration of the intended spatial organization. The elevation of 800 meters corresponded to this parameter, thus, the lowlands with regional significance were associated to the urban area, and the higher ones to the natural areas. It was demonstrated that actions of spatial nature, the east-west axis of urban expansion induced by the government since the 1970s, as well as the environmental protection units of several categories of conservation located in the MRSP, reproduce such spatial organization, and corroborate it. It was also possible to identify actions which agreed with this spatial organization and might be justified in the societys logic, and not only in the scientific or environmental logic. Such analysis allowed the identification of a complementary spatial organization that associates the urban expansion to climatic types and socially justifies the presence of a great part of the environmental protection units located in the urban area in MRSP. Based in such knowledge, it were suggested sectors ranging from the most vulnerable ones for the greenbelt conservation, which are constituted of environmental protection units situated in the area with urban character, to the less vulnerable ones, with environmental protection units situated in the areas with natural character. It was also suggested the most suitable sectors in which it is prognosticated the intense urban expansion, and those in which metropolitan parks can be established. Both of them fulfill the role of answering the needs of the metropolis and mitigate the occupation of sectors that must have priority conservation. It was concluded that in MRSP the spatial organization glimpsed is not valid only for the escarpment areas of Serra do Mar and Paranapiacaba, and that the reality can be approached from the point of view of the area of the spatial shapes. From this type of analysis its possible to suggest spatial sectors that aim to contribute to the territorial planning, under the environmental or social focus.

Classification d'images RSO polarimétriques à haute résolution spatiale sur site urbain / High – Resolution Polarimetric SAR image classification on urban areas

Soheili Majd, Maryam 28 April 2014 (has links)
In this research, our aim is to assess the potential of a one single look high spatial resolution polarimetric radar image for the classification of urban areas. For that purpose, we concentrate on classes corresponding to different kinds of roofs, objects and ground surfaces. At first, we propose a uni-variate statistical analysis of polarimetric and texture attributes, that can be used in a classification algorithm. We perform a statistical analysis of descriptors and show that the Fisher distribution is suitable for most of them. We then propose a modification of the maximum likelihood algorithm based on a Fisher distribution; we train it with all of our attributes. We obtain a significant improvement in our results with the new algorithm, but a limitation appears to recognize some roofs. Then, the shape of rectangular buildings is recognized by morphological operations from the image of radar amplitude. This spatial information is introduced in a Fisher-based classification process as a constraint term and we show that classification results are improved. In particular, it overcomes classification ambiguities between flat roof pixels and tree pixels. In a second step, some well-known algorithms for supervised classification are used. We deal with Maximum Likelihood based on complex Gaussian distribution (uni-variate) and multivariate Complex Gaussian using coherency matrix. Meanwhile, the support vector machine, as a nonparametric method, is used as classification algorithm. Moreover, a feature selection based on Genetic Algorithm using Mutual Information (GA-MI) is adapted to introduce optimal subset to classification method. To illustrate the efficiency of subset selection based on GA-MI, we perform a comparison experiment of optimal subset with different target decompositions based on different scattering mechanisms, including the Pauli, Krogager, Freeman, Yamaguchi, Barnes, Holm, Huynen and the Cloude decompositions. Our experiments are based on an image of a suburban area, acquired by the airborne RAMSES SAR sensor of ONERA, in 2006, with a spatial spacing of 35 cm. The results highlight the potential of such data to discriminate some urban land cover types.

Impact des multitrajets sur les performances des systèmes de navigation par satellite : contribution à l'amélioration de la précision de localisation par modélisation bayésienne / Multipath impact on the performances of satellite navigation systems : contribution to the enhancement of location accuracy towards bayesian modeling

Nahimana, Donnay Fleury 19 February 2009 (has links)
Most of the GNSS-based transport applications are employed in dense urban areas. One of the reasons of bad position accuracy in urban area is the obstacle's presence (building and trees). Many solutions are developed to decrease the multipath impact on accuracy and availability of GNSS systems. Integration of supplementary sensors into the localisation system is one of the solutions used to supply a lack of GNSS data. Such systems offer good accuracy but increase complexity and cost, which becomes inappropriate to equip a large fleet of vehicles. This thesis proposes an algorithmic approach to enhance the position accuracy in urban environment. The study is based on GNSS signals only and knowledge of the close reception environment with a 3D model of the navigation area. The method impacts the signal filtering step of the process. The filtering process is based on Sequential Monte Carlo methods called particle filter. As the position error in urban area is related to the satellite reception state (blocked, direct or reflected), information of the receiver environment is taken into account. A pseudorange error model is also proposed to fit satellite reception conditions. In a first work, the reception state of each satellite is assumed to be known. A Markov chain is defined for a known trajectory of the vehicle and is used to determine the successive reception states of each signal. Then, the states are estimated using a Dirichlet distribution

Analyse des déterminants de l'offre du travail des femmes en milieu urbain sénégalais / Analysis of the determinants of female labor supply in senegalese urban area

Faye, Abdou Diop 16 March 2012 (has links)
The objective of any economic analysis of the elabor supply is generally to better understand issues related to employment allowing formulating policies towards the labor market. This thesis is not an exception to this objective although it focuses exclusively on women. From the analysis of the present thesis, we have shed new light on the main factors driving or inhibiting the senegalese woman to enter the labor market. The theoretical approaches developed have led us to consider the nature of marital relationships, the different perceptions of work and family obligations corresponding to different types of female behavior of labor supply. Through a dicotomous and multinomial logit model, we have shown that the behavior of labor supply of senegalese women is influenced by individual characteristics such as the age and education level, and standard family characteristics such as the presence of under 5 years old child/children in the household, the presence of a spouce (marital status), the income of the spouse, the householf size, the monetary status indicated by the poverty, the remittances to descendants or ascendants.
