This dissertation examines the works of four Chicana/o writers who write about Los Angeles, California urban spaces, and how the literary protagonist experiences the material realities of everyday life. The objective of this dissertation is to look at the mechanisms used by the narrator and the meaning they transmit through the description of urban space. David Harvey's theory on the Urbanization of Consciousness is used to analyze the spatial transformation taking place in Los Angeles from the 1960's to the 1980's. Moreover, I utilize Michael de Certeau's explanations of how the practices of everyday life influence the author's cartographic imaginary. These practices are manifested in the narrator's description of the physical and social space and they convey an ideological message that points to the process of urbanization of consciousness in a capitalist society. Additionally, it draws together the work of important theorists such as Henri Lefebvre, Rodolfo Acuña, Mario Barrera, and James Diego Vigil. Chapter one introduces the theoretical framework that is used throughout this study. It establishes a definition of the urbanization of consciousness and how the main characters' interact with money, family, community, class, and the State. Chapter two explains how the rapid urban development in East Los Angeles during the 1960's shaped the characters' upbringings in the novel Their Dogs Came With Them (2007) by Helena María Viramontes. Chapter three analyzes how urban space molds the consciousness of the individual in Always Running, La Vida Loca: Gang Days in L.A. (1993) by Luis J. Rodríguez. Chapter four examines the architectural imagination in the novel of Alejandro Morales' Caras viejas y vino nuevo (1975). Chapter five studies the urbanization of gang violence among Chicana/o youth in the work of Yxta Maya Murray, Locas (1997). My investigation leads me to conclude that the Chicana/o community became urbanized when its members began to mirror its fragmented environment and when they began to see themselves as wage workers.

Despite the attention historians have given to the Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras in Central Europe, few works have sought to understand these events' reverberations throughout the nineteenth century in a local or regional context. Taking the northern German city of Hamburg as its focal point, this study investigates the change in the urban political culture affected by eight years of Napoleonic occupation. In the process of replacing Hamburg's sprawling and archaic government with one characterized by Gallic centralization and rigor, the French introduced a new style of politics that relied on consistent, public, and martial presentations of its authority. This public presence was heightened not only by the implementation of modern policing techniques, but also by a series of choreographed, ideologically-charged public spectacles whose effectiveness relied on a clever manipulation and politicization of urban space.

The scope of this piece of work is to reflect upon a series of past and recent publications as well as those in progress referring to innovations in architectural education which has already led and/or might lead to major shifts in future practices. This is an opportunity for the author to reflect on concepts and ideas for the future of architecture which is currently undergoing innovative developments by embracing new theories and enduring professional formation according to contemporary trends. This reflective work has been based on publication of research, including ongoing editorial work related to this topic. The author’s ideas and philosophy on human-oriented design and fractal patterns of social life has embraced dynamics of urban developments in modern and future cities. She has succeeded in considering, uniquely interpreting and further developing ideas and theories of established authors, such as Christopher Alexander’s concepts on patterns and principles of design and Nikos Salingaros’ thermodynamic models of the built environment. The author was inspired by teachers and renowned scholars in history, philosophy and practices of architecture; her own teachers’ experiences and their teaching had offered a singular momentum in her personal career path. This long process started when her teachers succeeded in placing urbanism and architecture side by side inside the Faculty of Architecture of Florence back in the 1970s. Hence the author reflects not only on recent publications, but also on others that have been published in the last decade or so. In this report it is evident that materials produced during these years have been essential and invaluable for her later endeavours in learning, teaching and the training of designers and architects in Great Britain and beyond.

[pt] O presente trabalho teve por objetivo fazer uma reflexão sobre a RCCBrasil à luz das atuais transformações espaciais urbanas com a intenção de evidenciar as implicações para o meio eclesial católico. Toda a atuação da RCCBrasil no território brasileiro, desde o seu surgimento, está inserida nas principais cidades do país. Assim, é de extrema importância o destaque que esse trabalho dá às implicações do espaço urbano e suas decorrências para a composição do ambiente eclesial católico. Essas implicações permitem pensar sobre as possibilidades da ação evangelizadora em lugares marcados por novos usos, arranjos espaciais e transformações constantes. Esta dissertação vai retratar como a RCCBrasil foi estendendo suas atividades por todo o território brasileiro ao longo dos anos e organizando uma estrutura para dar suporte ao surgimento dos grupos de oração, eventos de louvor e formação. A pesquisa demonstra que o desenvolvimento da RCCBrasil foi rápido, e a diversidade regional não foi um obstáculo para o crescimento do número de membros, que são assessorados pelos diversos ministérios, pelo Escritório Nacional e pelas coordenações locais e regionais. Este trabalho ressalta a ligação da RCCBrasil com a RCC em vários países e a importância da identidade do movimento carismático católico como uma forma de reavivamento religioso que se estendeu por vários continentes. O uso dos meios de comunicação pela RCCBrasil serve como forma de divulgar suas atividades, identidade e a doutrina católica. A RCCBrasil coloca à disposição dos membros, principalmente no espaço virtual, informações sobre a Igreja Católica no Brasil e em Roma, destacando pronunciamentos dos bispos e do Papa. / [en] This current work aims at placing a reflection on RCCBrasil and the current urban space transformation in order to highlight the implications for the catholic ecclesiastic world. All the action of the RCCBrasil in the Brazilian territory since its beginning has occurred in the major cities of the country. Therefore, the focus given in this work to the implications of the urban space and its consequences in the composition of the catholic ecclesiastic environment is extremely important. These implications enable a reflection on the possibilities of the evangelical action in places marked by new uses, special arrangements and frequent transformation. This dissertation is going to portrait how RCCBrasil has stretched its activities all over the Brazilian territory throughout the years and organized a structure to support the beginning of groups of prayer, formation events and praise. The research shows that the development of RCCBrasil has been fast, and the regional diversity has not prevented the growth in the number of members, who are assisted by several ministries, by the National Office and by the local and regional coordination. This work enhances the connection between RCCBrasil and RCC in several countries and the importance of the identity of the catholic charismatic movement as a means of religious revival which has spread to several continents. The use of media by RCCBrasil grants its members the access to information, mainly on the internet, about the Catholic Church in Brazil and in Rome, highlighting the Popes and the bishops speeches.

Assim, aqui se objetiva analisar a produção do espaço urbano em Rio Claro-SP, através dessa valorização, a qual faz com que localizações privilegiadas no centro da cidade, mais precisamente ao redor de seu Jardim Público, com construções antigas (casarões e palacetes de famílias renomadas), cedam lugar ao consumo do e no espaço, onde agentes modeladores atuam de forma concentrada criando um número elevado de estacionamentos. A especulação imobiliária é maciça, tornando o espaço mera mercadoria. Neste trabalho também se analisa o papel do poder público, quanto ao planejamento e a gestão dessa área, além do posicionamento da sociedade civil. / Abstract: Nowadays, it is possible to notice a form of production and reproduction of urban space, which can be verified from the capitalist perspective point of view: the use of space. There has been analysis of the production of urban space in Rio Claro-SP. Privileged locations downtown, more specifically around its Public Garden, with old buildings (mansions and palaces of renowned families), creates consumption of space, where modular agents act in a concentrated way creating a lot of parking. The real estate speculation is massive, making the space a mere commodity. This study also examines the role of the public government system, the planning and management of the area, beyond the position of civil society. / Mestre

Tem-se observado a expansão do processo de verticalização acompanhada de um movimento de direcionamento da produção imobiliária a nichos de mercado. Eles se conformam, segundo a localização dos imóveis no espaço urbano e um conjunto de atributos, que são a eles acoplados e que atendem a diferentes desejos e interesses dos consumidores, relativos a um estilo de vida e bem-estar socialmente valorizados. Nesta dissertação, discute-se o processo de verticalização na cidade de Londrina - PR, no período de 2000 a 2010, a partir das ofertas de imóveis para alguns segmentos do mercado imobiliário, quais sejam, os de unidades residenciais multifamiliares localizadas em áreas de expansão da verticalização, anteriormente mais restrita ao centro e às áreas pericentrais. It has been observed the expansion of the verticalisation process followed by a movement of directing production to niche real estate market. They conform, according to the location of buildings in urban space and a set of attributes, which are attached to them and that meet different desires and interests of consumers, relating to a lifestyle and wellness socially valued. In this dissertation, we discuss the process of vertical integration in the city of Londrina - PR, in the period 2000 to 2010, from real estate sales for some segments of the housing market, namely, the multi-family residential units located in areas of expansion of verticalisation, previously restricted to more central areas and of the pericentre. The analysis of trends in production and consumption of urban space seem to us very important, in that (re) structuring of the dynamics of urban space. O objetivo central desta tese é traçar um panorama das transformações ocorridas na cidade de Vitória, capital do Estado do Espírito Santo, durante a Primeira República, desvendando sua trajetória histórica. Utiliza o Governo Estadual e suas ações como instrumentos privilegiados para analisar as mudanças no espaço urbano, examinando os conflitos sociais que nele se desenrolaram e as visões dos sujeitos históricos envolvidos. Propõe que o olhar sobre a cidade não exponha apenas a influência do Estado sobre a construção do espaço urbano, mas analise como este se relacionou com a sociedade e se representou nas imagens urbanas. O trabalho está estruturado em cinco capítulos, além da introdução e das considerações finais: no primeiro, esclarece o suporte conceitual e metodológico no que se refere à análise das cidades e do poder, especificamente sobre a cidade de Vitória e o exercício do poder sobre ela; no segundo, explora a história, o perfil e a construção política dos executivos estaduais, considerados como os mais influentes na transformação do espaço urbano de Vitória no período; no terceiro, mostra a cidade construída pelo poder do Estado, retratada nos relatórios do Governo Estadual apresentados ao Congresso; no quarto, analisa as petições dirigidas ao Poder Executivo de Vitória e as legislações municipais dos períodos em suas determinações sobre a cidade; no quinto capítulo, responde às seguintes questões: como a população se expressou nas petições? Como o Governo Municipal se comportou? Conclui que o Estado foi o sujeito histórico determinante para as transformações do espaço urbano de Vitória na Primeira República. O poder do Estado, nesse processo, foi exercido pelo Governo Estadual, corporificado pela figura dos presidentes do Estado. Os Governos Municipais também tiveram sua parcela de atuação, mas, subordinados ao Governo Estadual, agiram como sujeitos coadjuvantes. A sociedade não esteve alheia ao processo, no entanto seu campo de atuação se restringiu às suas necessidades cotidianas, mais imediatas. / The main purpose of this study is to delineate scenery of the transformations in the city of Vitória, capital of Espírito Santo State during the period of Brazilians First Republic, showing its historical way. It uses the State Government and its actions as privileged instruments to analyze the changes in urban spaces, investigating social conflicts involved and the vision of the historical subjects. It suggests that the look over the city do not show only the State influence over the construction of this urban space, but it makes an analysis of how the State relates to the society and how it was represented in the urban images. The study is divided in introduction, 5 chapters and final considerations. The first chapter clarifies the methodological support related to the analysis of the cities and the power over them; the second chapter explores the history, profile and political construction of the State Government, considered the most influent subject in the transformation of the urban space of the city of Vitória in that period of time. The 3rd chapter shows the city built by the State Power, revealed in the State Government presented at the State Congress. In 4th chapter, the study analyses the peoples petitions sent to the superior administration and also the local laws of this period related to the city. The 5th chapter answers the questions: how did the people express themselves in the petitions? How did the local administration behave? The study concludes that the State Government was the main historical subject to the transformations of the urban space of Vitória in the period of First Republic. In this process, the power was exerted by the State Government, personified by the State Governor. The local administration also had its performance portion acting as co adjuvant and always subordinated by the State Government. The society was not a distant part of this process but its action, was restricted to its quotidian and immediate needs.

Caminhando por referências bibliográficas, esta dissertação buscou construir um tema comum para se pensar e praticar a arquitetura e o design na sociedade contemporânea. O tema proposto aqui é o espaço comum. Aqui, comum é entendido como banal, genérico, recorrente, freqüente, compartilhado, repartido, coletivo, entre outras interpretações; o espaço comum é um cenário critico e instrumental. O espaço comum é uma releitura crítica do espaço, da paisagem e do tempo na sociedade urbana contemporânea. Paralelamente a este cenário critico, trazemos as práticas sensíveis sobre o espaço comum. A prática é o eixo deste trabalho e a sensibilidade seu impulso. Este trabalho, apesar das referencias teóricas e conceituais apresentadas no primeiro capítulo, é um trabalho prático. Seu conteúdo está centrado nos produtos que o acompanham. Logo, o DVD-Rom inserido na contracapa deste trabalho não deve ser apreciado como um conteúdo adicional. Este é parte essencial deste trabalho assim como o texto. Buscamos ainda abrir questões para se pensar o papel do arquiteto e do designer enquanto propositor de uma cultura urbana. Este trabalho, que parte da hipótese em que a sociedade urbana Lefebvriana é um rumo comum, pergunta: como pode o arquiteto fazer parte efetivamente deste movimento social sem ser um espectador arrastado entre correntes e tendências da cultura? Também, enquanto uma análise crítica da linguagem usada por arquitetos e designers, as práticas sensíveis sobre o espaço comum, ilustram e indicam o potencial existente na linguagem eletrônica para se perceber, experimentar, e intervir em espaços urbanos. Enfim, fotografias digitais, panoramas, animações, vídeos, músicas e registros sonoros práticos impulsionados pela sensibilidade urbana resultam em produtos que serão apresentados ao longo deste trabalho paralelamente ao texto. / Through bibliographic references, this thesis envisages a common theme to think and practice architecture and design in the contemporary society. The subject in study is the common space. In this context, common space is defined as trivial, generic, recurrent, frequent, shared by groups, among other interpretations. The common space is a stage for critique and work. The common space can be redefined with a critical view of space, landscape and time in the contemporary society. In parallel to this critical view, we bring sensitive practices to the common space. Hands-on is the axis of this work and sensitivity its drive. This thesis is a practical work in spite of the theoretical references presented and discussed in the first chapter. Its core is in the contents of the DVD-Rom attached, which is an integral part of the work in the same way as the written text is. In the research we propose the role of the architect and designer as a direct influence in urban culture. This work hypothesis is that the Lefebvres urban society is a common goal, and so, how can an architect be part of this movement without being a simple spectator being pushed by cultural currents and tendencies? Still, the language used by architects and designers, with sensitive interferences in the urban space, indicate the potential of the use of digital language to perceive, experiment and intervene in urban spaces. Finally, digital photographs, images, animations, videos, music and sounds can be products as presented in this thesis in addition to the written text.

A cidade como conhecemos, desde seus primórdios na modernidade, caracterizada pela ocupação maciça de seu espaço por milhares de pessoas, nos propiciou novos tipos de interação social e o desenvolvimento de novas subjetividades e sensibilidades que permeiam o imaginário coletivo. É a partir do sentimento ambíguo causado pelo desenvolvimento desenfreado, das grandes descobertas nas áreas da ciência e da tecnologia, explosão demográfica e problemas sociais causados pelo processo de modernização que se dá o tom do imaginário da nova ambiência urbana, em particular da metrópole. A literatura brasileira, predominantemente urbana desde seus primórdios, é marcada por representar as características das cidades, sejam elas por meio da descrição dos espaços urbanos (ou em transição para o urbano), quanto por meio das relações sociais que emergem deste meio. Atualmente, o espaço urbano funciona na narrativa urbana contemporânea, para além de cenário, como um catalisador de eventos ao longo da narrativa. Diante deste contexto geral, o presente trabalho busca, por meio da coparticipação dos estudos urbanísticos e literários, verificar como se apresenta na literatura o imaginário urbano, ou seja, por meio da análise de obras literárias brasileiras contemporâneas, procura-se levantar a influência do discurso urbano no imaginário literário. Especificamente, o trabalho busca a imagem da cidade de São Paulo apresentada e representada nas obras O matador, de Patrícia Melo, O Invasor, de Marçal Aquino, o conto Angu de Sangue, de Marcelino Freire e O sol se põe em São Paulo, de Bernardo Carvalho. Desta maneira, a pesquisa procura encontrar nos textos selecionados traços que apontem características urbanas contemporâneas que se relacionem diretamente com a subjetividade dos indivíduos que praticam a cidade, para além de um mero pano de fundo para a narrativa. / The city as we know it, since its beginning in modern times, was characterized by its large-scale occupation by thousands of people, providing us with new kinds of social interactions and the development of knew subjectivities and sensibilities that permeate the collective social imaginary. It is by the ambiguous feelings caused by the uncontrolled development of the great discoveries in science and technology, population explosion and social problems caused by the process of modernization that give the shade of the new urban ambiance, particularly of the metropolis. The Brazilian literature, mainly urban since its beginning, is known by the representation of the city, by the description of the urban space (or in transition to the urban modernity) as well as the social interactions that emerge from this environment. It is, however, in contemporaneity that the city goes from scenario to a sort of catalyst for events in throughout the narrative. Before such context, the present work aims, with co-participation of the urban studies and literary studies, to verify how the urban imaginary is presented in literature. In other words, through the analysis of Brazilian contemporary books it will be checked the influence of urban discourse in literary imaginary. The work will, specifically, look for the image of São Paulo presented and represented in the following literary work: The Hitman, by Patrícia Melo; The Intruder, by Marçal Aquino, the short story Blood Cornmeal, by Marcelino Freire and The sun goes down in São Paulo, by Bernardo Carvalho. This way, the research tries to find textual evidences that point out urban characteristics in the city of São Paulo, and relate directly with the subjectivity of the individuals who experience the city more than merely a background.

Estabelecendo similaridades entre fenômenos culturais populares-urbanos emergidos em uma metrópole mundial (Nova York), e em uma metrópole periférica brasileira (Salvador), que se estabelecem a partir de semelhantes relações com a cidade, com a indústria cultural, e com dados políticos e econômicos, procura compreender dinâmicas presentes na produção cultural do atual estágio do capitalismo, caracterizada pela orientação da cultura para a produção de mercadorias. Sendo assim, propõe um estudo comparativo, em que o conteúdo estético é deixado em parênteses, em favor de análises de efeitos materiais, sociais e econômicos, apresentando-se também como uma tentativa de compreensão de lógicas existentes em outras manifestações culturais contemporâneas, além de se apresentar como uma contribuição para reflexões sobre possíveis vínculos entre Arte, Cultura e Cidade. / Establishing similarities between popular-urban cultural phenomena emerging in a world metropolis (New York), and a peripheral Brazilian metropolis (Salvador), which establishes from similar relations with the city, with the cultural industry, and with political and economic data, aims to understand cultural dynamics present in current stage production of capitalism, characterized by the guidance of culture for the production of goods. Therefore, it proposes a comparative study, in which the aesthetic content is left in parentheses, in favor of analysis of material, social and economic effects, as well as an attempt of understanding existing logic in other cultural contemporary events, in addition to performing as a contribution to reflections on possible links between Art, Culture and City.
