Finská epistemická modální slovesa v kontrastivním pohledu / Finnish Epistemic Modals in Contrastive Perspective

Janoušková, Kateřina January 2016 (has links)
This corpus based diploma thesis takes stock of Finnish epistemic modal verbs voida, saattaa, taitaa and mahtaa and surveys their translational counterparts as they can be found in the parallel corpus InterCorp. The aim of the thesis is to find out what tendencies there can be found in the translation of the modals in question. In the theoretical part, there is, firstly, a description of both modality and modal verbs in Finnish and Czech, secondly, of the differences between the approaches to modality in both languages and, thirdly, of the features of translated language. In the analytical part, the translations are sorted out into categories based on the particular modal specifiers. The description of the different modal specifier categories follows.

Uvozovací věty v češtině a v angličtině / Reporting clauses in Czech and in English

Sedláček, Miroslav January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis presents a contrastive description of reporting clauses in present-day original Czech and American fiction (published and awarded in 2010-2015). The examined reported clauses are limited to direct speech marked with a conventional means of punctuation. Based on six samples of fiction, three American ones and three Czech ones, this thesis examines reporting verbs, their diversity, the nature of the subject of reporting clauses, modification by adjuncts, the presence of an object expressing the addressee and the position of reporting clauses with respect to their reported clauses. It also scrutinizes the instances of leaving the reporting clause unexpressed and of certain transient forms. The ascertained values are then compared with a translatology paper on the same topic. The findings of this thesis confirm that while Czech reporting clauses strive for diversity by a number of means, English reporting clauses strive for inconspicuousness. This thesis attempts to contribute to a better understanding of reporting clauses. The outlined findings may be helpful especially to translators and fiction writers. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Mental Lexicon Architecture and Morphological Processing of French Verbs / Architecture du lexique mental et traitement morphologique des verbes français

Estivalet, Gustavo Lopez 04 October 2016 (has links)
How do we process word meaning? These questions have been pursued in lexical access and word recognition studies in the last half century of research in psycho-, neuro-, and linguistics. Morphological processing is an essential level of processing for information extraction during word recognition. In one extreme, full-entry models propose whole word storage in memory and post-lexical morphological processing based on paradigms; in the other extreme, decompositional models posit pre-lexical decomposition and morphemic activation based on rules; between then, dual-mechanism models consider two routes for word recognition, a whole-word associative route and a combinatorial rule-based route. In the present thesis, it was investigated the morphological processing of French inflected verbs in visual modality in five studies. Study 1 researched the mental lexicon organization in function of surface and cumulative frequencies; Study 2 explored different stem formation processes; Study 3 investigated morphological operations in the inflectional suffixes; Study 4 tested the verbal morphological processing in L2 French speakers; and Study 5 tested verbal violations coupled with electroencephalography acquisition. The results suggest that all inflected French verbs are processed by a single-mechanism model with pre-lexical morphological decomposition for lexical activation and word recognition. It is proposed different processing for the lexical and functional morphemes. Words are decomposed in atomic morphemes, morphemic representations are activated in the mental lexicon, and word constituents are recombined for word verification

Clausulas encaixadas em verbos causativos e perceptivos : uma analise funcionalista

Carvalho, Cristina dos Santos 29 July 2004 (has links)
Orientador: Maria Luiza Braga / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-04T00:47:01Z (GMT). In the present work I investigate Portuguese complex sentences which involve embedded clauses with causative and perception verbs. I examine causative verbs such as mandar ¿to order¿, deixar ¿to let¿ and fazer ¿to make¿ and perception verbs such as ver ¿to see¿, ouvir ¿to hear¿ and sentir ¿to feel¿, because they were the most frequent ones, of each semantic group, to appear in the sample. Some theoretical assumptions from the functionalist approach are used, mainly these ones adopted by Givón (1990, 1995), Hopper e Traugott (1993) and Lehmann (1988). The analysis is based on the notions of iconicity, syntactic integration and grammaticalization, since the aim is to confront the embedded clauses of causative and perception verbs as far as their syntactic and semantic properties are concerned. I also study the Portuguese usages of these clauses in a panchronic perspective to verify the action of the Uniformitarian Principle (Labov, 1995). Then, I examine data from two periods of Portuguese, the archaic and contemporary ones, emphasizing the latter. The synchronic sample consists of data of spoken Brazilian Portuguese from the XXth Century. The diachronic sample consists of written texts from the XVth Century: A Crônica de D. Pedro and A Carta de Pero Vaz de Caminha. Adopting the methodological principles from the Theory of Linguistic Variation, I make a quantitative analysis of the synchronic data through the VARBRUL, a package of statistical programs (although I am not studying a variable rule). Based on the claims about iconicity, syntactic integration and grammaticalization, it is assumed that: (a) the embedded clauses of causative verbs differ, semantically and syntactically, from the sentential complements of perception verbs because they exhibit different levels of syntactic integration; (b) there are distinct degrees of syntactic integration and grammaticalization among the verbs of each semantic group and among the meanings of each verb. In order to check these hypotheses, the degrees of syntactic integration and grammaticalization between the sentential complements and their matrixes are measured based on syntactic and semantic-pragmatic parameters. As far as these parameters are concerned, the results show that: (a) the embedded clauses of causative and perception verbs exhibit different distributional patterns and, therefore, they display different degrees of syntactic integration; (b) these differences are explained by the Proximity Subprinciple (Givón, 1990); (c) some usages of causative and perception verbs represent distinct stages of grammaticalization; (d) in the semantic groups examined, some verbs have more integrated and grammaticalized usages than others / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

Teste de morfologia da língua portuguesa em sujeitos normais: efeitos de escolaridade / Morphological test in the Portuguese language in healthy subjects: schooling effects

Tharsila Moreira Gomes da Costa 07 August 2017 (has links)
Little is known about the morphological aspects of language, which represents a gap in the brain-mind relationship scenario. The scarce studies were produced in Anglo-Saxon languages, with different characteristics from the Brazilian Portuguese. Studies on morphological aspects in subjects with neurological disorders have shown worst performance related to language tasks. A few studies indicate that the inflexion of regular and irregular verbs may be associated with different mechanisms and cerebral processes. The research about healthy Brazilian Portuguese speakers\' behavior may collaborate as reference for future studies with subjects with language disorders. Purpose: to verify the morphological production in the Portuguese language in healthy subjects through a verb and pseudoverb inflexion test. Methods: the sample was composed by cognitively healthy individuals with ages ranging between 40 to 80 years old. The years of formal education were considered as the educational level; the Group 1 (G1) between 0 to 7 years of study and the Group 2 (G2) above 8 years of study. The test consisted of 213 target-phrases with different verbal tenses. The sentences were built with real verbs and pseudoverbs. A program was designed to play the target-phrases in audio and the subjects had to complete the given sentence. Results: the subjects\' answers were transcribed and analyzed by their performance on the test and also through the type of answer presented to each stimulus. Subjects were then compared by their performance and educational level. For the real irregular verbs it was observed a worse performance by G1 than G2, with a marked statistical significance. For the pseudoverbs it was observed a statistical significance in all verb inflexions, with worse performance by G1. Qualitative analysis of the responses revealed a pseudoverb lexicalization effect, absence of answer and a more frequent phonological transformation for G1 answers. Conclusion: there is an education influence in the morphological production performance in cognitively healthy individuals. This study may contribute as a reference for future researches involving patients with language disorders in Brazil

Los verbos modales en las introducciones y en las conclusiones de los artículos científicos de turismo

Domínguez Morales, María Elena 02 September 2021 (has links)
[EN] The research article in the field of tourism studies has not been sufficiently studied, despite being a discipline strongly connected with a sector of economic growth for many countries. Other textual genres related to the tourism register such as the summary, brochures and web pages in the tourism register, the latter with great relevance for their clear social and economic impact of tourism studies, have enjoyed more scholarly attention. Scientific research in tourism, however, provides organisations, whether public or private, with relevant information for the improvement of the activity, which translates into recommendations that are often included in the conclusions of these studies. It is held, therefore, that there is a direct relationship between the development of the sector and empirical research, which, in turn, shows the interest in academic publications in leading journal. For this reason, this paper includes a formal characterisation of the genre into sections. This study is supplemented with a description of the recurrent lexicalgrammatical structures in each of the sections of the scientific article and the lexical and syntactic variables that characterise the text within the scientific register, both in terms of the complexity and the level of elaboration exhibited in the language used in these works. These structures are intended to signal the authors' perspective, among other aspects. That said, the aim of this paper is to analyse modal verbs, their meanings and the existence of variation in the "introduction" and "conclusion" sections of the research article in the discipline of tourism. These texts have been taken from leading journals in the field and with a clear impact index in the discipline. Modal verbs reflect the speaker's point of view. As part of the methodology, corpus linguistics tools are used to allow the management of the texts and their consultation, as well as the excerption of concrete examples illustrating the forms, the semantic categories and the functions found in the texts studied. However, given that context is fundamental to the identification of modal meanings, part of the analysis of the texts requires direct visual recognition in each occurrence, as the same modal verb may entail several meanings. The analysis and discussion of the data is informed by studies in functional linguistics which allow us to count on the uses and functions of the different modal forms. The conclusions indicate that there is indeed variation not only in terms of the forms used in each of the introductions and conclusions, but also in terms of meaning. In this sense, it is found that dynamic modality is more frequent in the introductions, according to their relative frequencies, and epistemic modality is more frequent in the conclusions. Likewise, several functions closely related to modal meanings have been detected. Thus, the function of mitigation and linguistic politeness is most closely related to epistemic modality, as is the formulation of inferential meaning, which refers to epistemic necessity. The expression of factuality and impossibility are nourished by the dynamic modality, while prediction, content while prediction, content organisation, authority and recommendation are manifested using deontic modality. The thesis is structured in five chapters, and bibliographical references are included finally in this dissertation. / Domínguez Morales, ME. (2021). Semantic and structural factors in sentence processing and word learning

Justin B Kueser (11160186) 20 July 2021 (has links)
<p>This work presents two studies of language processing and development in children. The first study focuses on passive sentence comprehension in 4-5-year-old children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and same-age peers with typical development (TD). We explore the effect of animacy, morphosyntactic, vocabulary, and event probability cues on children’s offline comprehension and online processing of passive sentences using an eye-tracked looking-while-listening design. The children were first exposed to short videos of agents doing characteristic actions (e.g., hard physical activities or passively observant activities). The children then engaged in an eye-tracked online processing task in which they heard reversible and nonreversible passive sentences describing events that matched or did not match the characteristics set up in the exposure videos. During these sentences, images on-screen were displayed that corresponded to the potential interpretations of the sentence. Online processing data was collected using eye tracking. After each sentence, the children were asked to point to the image corresponding to their interpretation to measure their offline comprehension. The offline comprehension data indicated that compared to the children with TD, the children with DLD were less likely to correctly interpret the passive sentences and made comprehension errors that suggested poorer attention to and integration of potentially informative sentence cues. The eye-tracked online processing data was examined in two ways. First, we analyzed the online processing data to determine to what extent the children’s processing was consistent with the use of the sentence cues. We found that the children in the two groups were just as likely to demonstrate looking patterns consistent with the use animacy cues but children with DLD were less likely to use morphosyntactic, vocabulary, and event probability cues. We then analyzed the online processing data in correctly interpreted sentences only to examine how the sentence cues were integrated over the course of the sentence. We found that in correctly interpreted sentences, children with DLD demonstrated a slower, less robust response to most of the informative cues in the sentences but quicker and less linguistically mediated use of event probability cues. Finally, we examined the relationship between the children’s use of event probability cues and their stimuli-specific vocabulary knowledge but found no strong associations. </p><p><br></p><p> The second study focuses on the semantic network structure of the vocabularies of young 18-30-month-old children and its influence on noun and verb learning. Prior work had examined how noun semantic network structure affects noun learning. Here, we extended that work to ask how noun and verb semantic network structures differ in their influence on noun and verb learning. We examined vocabulary network structure at the word, semantic neighborhood, and lexicon levels in a large sample of child vocabulary checklist data using semantic features. We analyzed the data in three ways. First, we charted the relationship between verb and noun semantic network structure and vocabulary size across children. We found that early-learned nouns tended to have strong network relationships with other nouns and other verbs across network levels. We also found that early-learned verbs tended to have strong network relationships with other nouns but, in contrast, were unlikely to have strong relationships with other verbs. Next, we examined patterns of normative vocabulary development, asking whether the cross-sectional patterns seen in the first analysis influenced the time at which nouns and verbs tended to be learned. We found similar patterns. Nouns with strong semantic connections to other nouns and other verbs tended to be learned early. Verbs with strong semantic connections to other nouns tended to be learned early but verbs with strong semantic connections to other verbs tended to be learned later. Finally, in an effort to determine how the very earliest vocabulary knowledge sets the stage for later word learning, we examined how word knowledge gaps formed and were filled by nouns and verbs in normative vocabulary development. These gaps corresponded to structured “cavities” in the semantic networks. We found that nouns tended to form semantic cavities that were later filled by nouns and verbs, reinforcing the findings from the first analyses that early noun knowledge is a prerequisite for later verb learning. </p>

PLUSSA, LÄGGA IHOP OCH ADDERA - Verb i läromedel i matematikämnet för grundskolans tidigare år

Carlén, Irina January 2020 (has links)
Research points at the textbook as the main source for mathematics development in the early school ages. The study enhances the concept of relational and instrumental understanding as means to address the teaching environment within textbooks. To investigate a part of the linguistic structure of this literature, this study reports on the main features that characterize the word class known as verbs due to their presence throughout a series of textbooks designed for the stages 1 to 3 in Sweden. The goal was to make common claims about frequency, tense and processes due to these verbs. By creating a specialized corpus, these verbs were catalogued and marked in comparison to two larger corpora and to GERS-levels. A process analysis was then done based on a systemic-functional linguistic tool. The results show a vast difference between the low- and the high frequency verbs. Analysis showed that present tense held the highest frequency by over 50%. Results also showed presence of the formal passive voice. Furthermore, the material processes were in a large majority in contrast to others present. Other indications of the analysis showed poor conditions for development of relational understanding in contrast to emphasis made in the national curriculum. Conclusions involve statements regarding textbook teaching methods not providing sufficient environments for language development. The characters of the verb corpus might place demands on students’ lexical knowledge and language proficiency level on forehand, which might induce a language-related knowledge barrier against the mathematical communication provided through the textbook.
