Véritable icône mondiale des loisirs, Las Vegas est souvent associée au strass et aux paillettes du Strip, grand boulevard le long duquel se concentrent les casinos et les attractions touristiques. La ville est généralement associée à une licence festive et aux extravagances architecturales, et pourtant près de deux millions d'habitants vivent et travaillent dans cette capitale économique du Nevada. Dans une démarche alliant géographie urbaine et géographie culturelle, cette thèse propose d'étudier l'urbanité et la citadinité végasiennes afin de déconstruire l'image monobloc de la Las Vegas touristique. L'étude identifie l'existence d'imaginaires touristiques qui façonnent les représentations de Las Vegas dans l'opinion commune américaine et qui sont un des facteurs explicatifs des jugements de valeur et des analyses partisanes qui dominent les écrits universitaires qui lui sont consacrés. Ce travail de décryptage des discours produits sur Las Vegas constitue la première étape d'un examen dépassionné de l'urbanité et de la citadinité végasiennes. La recherche met en évidence une tension fondamentale entre la banalité urbaine et l'exceptionnalité qui résulte de la pratique légale des jeux d'argent et de la spécialisation touristique. En s'appuyant sur une articulation entre des données quantitatives et des entretiens qualitatifs auprès des habitants, cette thèse identifie une citadinité de la déficience, caractérisée par la faiblesse des relations de voisinage et du sentiment de communauté. Cette vision synchronique est complétée par une vision diachronique qui interroge les processus de transformation de la citadinité. La notion d'appropriation est plus particulièrement mobilisée, à travers les dynamiques de patrimonialisation et de transformation urbaine du centre-ville, afin d'identifier les pistes utilisées localement pour (re)construire Las Vegas.

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This research develops Broom, Casey and Ritchey's (1997) concept of relationship antecedents, suggesting moral obligation as a non-consequential relationship antecedent. By using Bivins's (2009) classification of moral and functional obligations, this research suggests that nonprofit managers perceive a moral obligation on the part of gaming corporations to establish relationships that can benefit the local community. Where a functional obligation would affect the corporation's ability to do business, the moral obligation is non-consequential and falls outside the parameters of the six consequential relationship antecedents identified by Grunig and Huang (2000). Business ethicists have long debated the need for corporate social responsibility, broadly defined as the idea that a corporation has a responsibility to society separate from its profit-making obligation to stockholders. This research looks at corporate social responsibility in the gaming industry in Las Vegas, examining nonprofit managers' expectations for these corporations to contribute to the local community. This study examines through qualitative interviews these managers' perceptions about the responsibility of gaming corporations to participate in and give back to the local community. This research also sheds light on Las Vegas, NV, recognized more often for its architecture and cultural zeitgeist than for the contours of its community. A background section on Las Vegas history and its development as a tourist destination provides context for an examination of the ways Las Vegas's nonprofit organizations interact with the city's dominant industry. Nonprofit managers perceive gaming corporations as under- involved in the local community; in addition, they believe the community is under- informed about these efforts, potentially leading to a low level of civic engagement. This research also examines corporate social responsibility in the context of the economic downturn that began September 2008. Because Las Vegas's economy is so heavily dependent on the gaming and tourism industries, the city provides an excellent location in which to examine how economic forces affect corporate social responsibility efforts. The study is presented in three articles, where one is a theoretical review, one is a methodology work and the other one is empiric. The first article has the objective of making a social-historical critic about the terms and used concepts in the denomination of same-sex people relations, using the theoretical proposal of Foucault`s knowledge archaeology and Berger and Luckman’s social constructionism. From these perspectives we could discuss and realize that the changes on the terms to the denomination of the same phenomenon work as argumentative tactics that provide an alternative view of this relation understanding. However, the change in the terminology per se indicates the maintenance on the same subjective construction in regards to this phenomenon unless there is an effective change in the concept that defines the relations between same sex people. The second article has the goal of showing the steps of the construction of the PAS-IF instrument, that describes in a quantitative way the perception of social support in seven dimensions: Social Company, Emotional Support, Cognitive Guide, Social Control, Material Support, Access to New Contacts and Sexual-Affective Orientation Acceptance; from three maps: family, friends and work/school relationships. The instrument has showed itself valid in the evaluation of the Social Support Network of adult subjects, independent of their affective-sexual orientation, reaching a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0,887, which demonstrates a high level of reliability. The last article has the objective of investigating the correlation between couple satisfaction and social support perception from gays and lesbians in the family, friends and work/school environment.The sample interviewed was made of 111 people and there was a significant positive correlation between couple satisfaction and both variables social support from family and from friends. This data shows us that the support functions measured and provided by both family and friends promote the development of human human subjective construction as well as it makes space for the development of couple satisfaction. Overall, the results from this dissertation makes us realize in a better way how we use the terms and concepts to define the relationships between same-sex people, the importance of building a complex instrument, helped us to have knowledge of the idea that the family provides an important function on couple relations and made us aware of the work relations to gays and lesbians, a environment to be researched in future studies. / Esta Dissertação de Mestrado pesquisa a relação entre a qualidade do relacionamento conjugal e a rede de apoio social de pessoas que se relacionam com outras do mesmo sexo. O estudo é apresentado na forma de três artigos, sendo um artigo de revisão teórica, um de metodologia e um empírico. O primeiro artigo procura fazer uma crítica histórico-social sobre os termos e conceitos usados na nomeação das relações entre pessoas do mesmo sexo usando a arqueologia do saber de Foucault e o construcionismo social de Berger e Luckman. Pode-se constatar e discutir que as mudanças de termos para a denominação do mesmo fenômeno, funcionam como táticas argumentativas que propiciam o entendimento dessa relação a partir de óticas alternativas. Entretanto, a mudança na terminologia por si só indica a manutenção da mesma construção subjetiva a respeito do fenômeno se não existir uma mudança efetiva no conceito que define as relações entre pessoas do mesmo sexo. O segundo artigo tem como objetivo delinear os passos da construção do instrumento PAS-IF que descreve de forma quantitativa a percepção do apoio social em sete dimensões: Companhia Social, Apoio Emocional, Guia Cognitivo, Controle Social, Ajuda Material, Acesso a Novos Contatos e Aceitação da Orientação Afetivo-sexual; a partir de três mapas: família, amigos e relações de trabalho/escola. O instrumento se mostrou válido na avaliação da rede de apoio social de sujeitos adultos, independente de sua orientação afetivo-sexual, alcançando um coeficiente alpha de Cronbach de 0,887, o que demonstra um alto índice de fidedignidade.O último artigo tem o objetivo de investigar a correlação entre qualidade conjugal e percepção de apoio social na família, nos amigos e nas relações de trabalho/escola de gays e lésbicas. Foram entrevistadas 111 pessoas e houve uma correlação positiva significativa entre qualidade conjugal e ambas as variáveis apoio social da família e apoio social dos amigos. Esse dado nos mostra que as funções de apoio medidas e exercidas pela família e pelos amigos favorecem o desenvolvimento da construção da subjetividade humana, assim como abrem caminho para o desenvolvimento da qualidade conjugal. De forma geral, os resultados desta dissertação nos levam a perceber melhor a forma como usamos os termos para definir as relações entre as pessoas do mesmo sexo, a importância de construir um instrumento complexo e ajudou a perceber a idéia de que a família exerce uma função importante na conjugalidade e nos alertou para as relações de trabalho para gays e lésbicas, espaço a ser pesquisado em futuros estudos.

Denna studie undersöker reklamfilmer producerade av två svenska spelföretag, ett statligt ägt och ett privat. Med grunder i en retorisk analys syftar studien till att undersöka ifall dessa reklamfilmer kan anses vara måttfulla sett till spellagen som stiftades 2018. För att besvara studiens syfte ställs följande tre frågeställningar: Följer Svenska spel och Leo Vegas spellagen sett från ett retoriskt perspektiv? Förekommer det gränsöverskridande retorik i företagens reklamfilmer? Kan man se någon skillnad i hur statligt ägda företag respektive privata företag anpassar sig till spellagen? Slutsatsen av studien visar att Svenska spel följer spellagen sett från ett retoriskt perspektiv medan Leo Vegas inte gör det. Resultatet visar att det förekommer gränsöverskridande retorik i företagens reklamfilmer och att det statligt ägda företaget har anpassat sig bättre till spellagen än vad det privata gjort. Studien visar dock att en mer omfattande undersökning krävs för att få fram resultat som är mindre generaliserande. Studien visar även att undersökningen blir viktig för fortsatta studier, då den väcker frågor om vad som kan anses vara måttfullt inom marknadsföring samt huruvida retoriska aspekter ska övervägas i spellagen.

The overall goal of this dissertation is to determine and develop optimal strategies for inversely calibrating transmissivities (T), elastic and inelastic skeletal storage coefficients (Ske and Skv) of the developed-zone aquifer and conductance (CR) of the basin-fill faults for the entire Las Vegas basin, and to investigate future trends of land subsidence in Las Vegas Valley. This dissertation consists of three separate stand-alone chapters. Chapter 2 presents a discrete adjoint parameter estimation (APE) algorithm for automatically identifying suitable hydraulic parameter zonations from hydraulic head and subsidence measurements. Chapter 3 compares three different inversion strategies to determine the most accurate and computationally efficient method for estimating T and Ske and Skv at the basin scale: the zonation method (ZM), the adaptive multi-scale method and the Differential Evolution Adaptive Metropolis Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme (DREAM MCMC). Chapter 4 outlines a fine-scale numerical model capable of capturing far more hydrologic detail than any previously developed model of Las Vegas Valley The new model is calibrated using high-resolution InSAR data and hydraulic head data from 1912 to 2010. The calibrated model is used to investigate the influence of faults and their potential role on influencing clay thicknesses and land subsidence distributions, and to investigate future trends of land subsidence in Las Vegas Valley. / Ph.
