Disaster preparedness of licensed private veterinary practitioners in Mississippi

Ebers, Kathleen Leech 30 April 2011 (has links)
This study’s purpose was to describe the disaster preparedness of licensed private veterinary practitioners in Mississippi. A mail survey was distributed assessing disaster training, response plans, and disaster-related organization knowledge. Individuals who have experienced a disaster are more likely to have a personal plan, a clinic plan, or both than those who have not. County residence along the Mississippi Gulf Coast showed 3.62 times likelihood of having a personal plan and 3.09 times likelihood of having a clinic plan than those in other districts. Many veterinarians failed to identify their local emergency management agency as their point of contact in a disaster situation, and few indicated having disaster education materials for their clients. Twenty percent of respondents indicated having obtained formal disaster training. More than two-thirds of respondents were interested in disaster training.

The Best Doctor

Sparacello, Mary 20 May 2011 (has links)
This is a book about the forty-four years my father has spent as a veterinarian. The book begins with his life growing up on a Nebraska farm and describes how he decided to become a veterinarian. I detail some of the most memorable times in his life, such as serving as a veterinarian in the Air Force and starting out in private practice. Readers will be introduced to some of the characters he has met along the way -- both human and animal -- and to controversies in the ever-changing world of veterinary medicine.

In the intersection between small business ownership, profession and gender

Appelkvist, Jenny January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is about women’s business ownership within a profession in a state of flux. Several professions in Sweden but also internationally are characterized by an increased proportion of women and structural transformations during the 1900s. An increase in businesses is another change that occurred in recent years. The study describes and analyzes women’s business ownership within a profession and a particular focus is placed on the intersection between business ownership, profession and gender. An example of a profession in a state of change in Sweden is the veterinary profession, which for the past 50 years have undergone a series of changes. A theoretical combination of small business ownership, profession and gender is used. The empirical material consists of interviews with all women who are business owners and veterinarians in Östergötland County. As a result of the study I coin the term profeneurs with the intention of making visible the interplay between business ownership and profession. The results of the study show that the profession is in many cases given priority over business ownership. Furthermore, the study shows that the profeneurs do gender at different levels and in different dimensions in relation to the profession. There is stability in how gender is done at a general level, while there are opportunities for change in how gender is done at a specific level. Even if stability dominates, business format provides opportunities to create some gaps in the pattern of the gender system.

A presença da homeopatia nas faculdades de Medicina Veterinária do Brasil / The presence of homeopathy at veterinary medical schools in Brazil

Oliveira, Clarice Vaz de 30 September 2016 (has links)
The discussion of Homeopathy's legitimacy in the scientific field is associated with dissent, referring to a historical conflict. This study evaluates qualitatively and quantitatively the presence of homeopathy in Brazilian veterinary medical schools. In curriculum perspective as territorial disputes, we analyze the tension between the homeopathy's discourse and scientific medicine, two distinct epistemes. These activities related to homeopathy were investigated: compulsory subject, elective subject, clinical care and academic research. The results show that homeopathy is offered in 20.1% of veterinary medical schools in the country. Furthermore, its offer is heterogeneous. There is a discrepancy between the formal and the real curriculum: the absence of homeopathy in the curriculum is justified by the lack of homeopathic veterinarians in the academic context. Personal initiatives are motivators of homeopathic activities found in academic curriculums. However, its institutionalization is fragile. We conclude that the homeopathy's subsidiary position in the academic field is justified as it diverges from the epistemological construction of scientific medicine

Made up of professionals from different areas of knowledge, it must act interactively, supporting the professional from the Family Health Strategy Team (ESF) and sharing the practices and knowledge about health in the areas under their responsability. The veterinarian can be part of the NASF team, but there are few towns which included this professional, as well as the amount of NASF units in Brazil. This thesis was thought in order to provide subsidies for the proposal of a NASF deployment with the insertion of this professional, using as a basis for study the city of Machado/MG. The main demands in health were checked through a check-list to the community health agents (ACS), nurses and nurse assistants from the ESF teams and the evaluation of the number of cats and dogs as well as their reproductive profile. Two questionnaires were developed and applied for the analysis of the population and the ACS’s perception about zoonosis, especially rabies, the analysis of the ESF health professionals’ perception about the Primary Care Structure, the veterinarian role in the Public Health in both moments of the research. The main detected demands in human health were diabetes, hypertension, obesity, sexually transmitted diseases, alcoholism, drugs use, early pregnancy and accumulators. Regarding the environmental and animals related conditions, we can point out the accumulation of trash, breeding spots of mosquitos, the presence of cats and dogs on the streets, as well as synanthropic animals, mainly doves, rats and ticks, and agressions caused by dogs or cats. The canine and feline population was also estimated in 10.300 animals, from which only 5% are castrated. The questionnaires analysis show that the population and the ACS know little about the veterinarian activities in the Public Health. The Health professionals have a better perception, but not satisfactory, and the problems in the human and animal health interfaces in the environmental context are varied. Therefore, it’s intended to create a NASF Team Modality 1, with a veterinarian included in it, taking part directly to the sanitary measures, which are essential for the Primary Care, inside the paradigm “One world, one health”.

Nas amostras analisadas não foram encontrados resíduos de estreptomicina e diidroestreptomicina em níveis detectáveis / Abstract: Veterinary drugs pose a risk to human health when there residual levels in foods exceed the maximum residue limit (MRL). Knowledge of the extent of human exposure to these compounds is necessary to provide consumer protection. To achieve this, it is essential that validated analytical methods are available to ensure reliable results. The aim of the present work was to develop and validate analytical methods for the analysis of streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin residues in milk, and to employ these methods for analysis of samples marketed in the region of Campinas, São Paulo. The developed and/or validated methods include enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS QToF). Method validation was performed according to the recommendations established by European Community and IUPAC. The following parameters were evaluated: analytical curve, linearity, sensitivity, precision (intra and inter-day repeatability), accuracy and the detection and quantification limits. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of ELISA and LCMS/MS methods for trial and confirmatory analyses, respectively, of streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin in milk at concentrations below the established MRL (200µg kg-1). In the analyzed samples streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin were not found at detectable levels / Mestrado / Mestre em Ciência de Alimentos

Étude des aspects juridiques et vétérinaires de la conformité : l'exemple des ventes de chevaux de sport / Legal and veterinary aspects of conformity : the case of horse trade

Philip, Aude 29 September 2017 (has links)
Conformity is the most fundamental element to be studied when it's reffered to the legal regim of horse trade. Indeed, its contour lines and its matter are different by socio-professionnal categorie involved in these kind of operations. Lawyers have a broad interpretation of conformity derived from consumer law, or more exactly the right to consume. Veterinarians see conformity as a break to their own professional practice of purchase exams. How to certify an animal, a living being before anything else ? How certify a sports horse will be complied with its new owner's expectations ? Horse salers are more and more worried about the consequence of a back to the stables of an unsaleable horse and about effects of sale agreement's resolution on the stud-farm cash position. The essential question is what constitutes conformity. Is it possible to have a common definition of conformity between the protagonists of sports horse sales ? Is the use the only determining criterion of conformity in sports horse sales ? Finally and espacially, is it good to continue to apply consumer law to sports horse sales ? Indeed, the interests of veterinarians and breeders is it not to exclude animals from consumer goods ?
