Den här uppsatsen undersöker symboliken av blodet på och från kvinnliga kroppar i skräckfilm och jämför hur de kvinnliga och manliga karaktärerna behandlas. En central del av uppsatsen är också att hitta kopplingar mellan blod, religion och sexualitet. För att besvara frågeställningarna genomfördes en kvalitativ bildanalys av två scener från vardera av filmerna Carrie (1976), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) och Scream VI (2023). Den teoretiska grunden för uppsatsen är Erwin Panofskys ikonologiska tolkning samt den manliga blicken av Laura Mulvey. Sammanfattningsvis visar studien att blod har använts som ett medel för att straffa de kvinnliga karaktärerna i de tre filmerna, den ikonologiska tolkningen bidrog till en förståelse om hur den manliga blicken fortfarande formar karaktärer och berättande, samt hur puritanismen har satt spår i den amerikanska filmindustrin.

À la fin de l'époque hellénistique, Mithridate VI Eupator, roi du Pont, donna un second souffle à l'hellénisme en tentant de repousser la puissance romaine dans son entreprise impérialiste en Orient. Les visées annexionnistes d'Eupator aboutirent aux guenes dites « mithridatiques ». Les cités hellénistiques se retrouvèrent au cœur de ces hostilités entre le souverain pontique et Rome. Certaines se joignirent à Mithridate et d'autres firent alliance avec Rome et ses représentants. Le sort des cités impliquées dans les guenes demeure un aspect peu traité à ce jour. Un sénatus-consulte (81 a. C), inscrit dans la cité de Stratonicée, faisait l'éloge de la population stratonicéenne qui avait été fidèle à Rome au moment des guenes de Mithridate. Dans le document, la cité recevait plusieurs privilèges en remerciement de son soutien à la cause romaine. Cette précieuse source permet de saisir les difficultés qu'ont pu rencontrer les habitants de Stratonicée durant les hostilités et de cerner le destin exceptionnel des Stratonicéens à la fin de l'époque hellénistique.

Winston Churchill fut l'un des principaux acteurs du drame de 1940. Son rôle dans ces événements demeure un sujet de débat historique, et ce pour deux raisons majeures. La première concerne son rôle sur le déroulement des opérations navales de son pays en tant que Premier Lord de l'Amirauté, qui n'est pas clairement établi. Les historiens s'interrogent sur les conséquences des gestes posés. La seconde a trait à sa responsabilité dans l'échec en Norvège, qui ne l'empêcha pas de devenir Premier ministre. Comment les historiens perçoivent-ils le rôle d'un individu? Comment traitent-ils les hommes politiques exceptionnels? This essay aims to understand how meaning and materiality work in four picture books from the 00s and 10s; Gittan och gråvargarna by Pija Lindenbaum, I skogen by Eva Lindström, Vem ser Dim? by Maria Nilsson Thore and Vi blåste bort ibland by Viveka Sjögren. The essay uses two theoretical works about picture books: Bilderbokens pusselbitar by Maria Nikolajeva and Modernismens bilder – Den moderna bilderboken i Norden by Elina Druker. Questions to lead the analysis are: How can text and picture be understood as materiality? How can meaning be understood as a material-discursive phenomenon? How can reading and meaning be understood as performative processes? The chapter “Diffractions: Differences, Contingencies, and Entanglements That Matter” from Karen Barad’s book Meeting the Universe Halfway – Quantum Physics and the Entanglement of Matter and Meaning provides help to understand diffraction as a metaphor and methodological attitude. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s understanding of knowledge as performative in the book Touching Feeling – Affect, Pedagogy, Performativity is used to understand the picture book as an act of knowledge and meaning, and reading as a performative process where human involvement cannot be overlooked. The essay problematizes the theoretical texts about picture books by taking on different parts of the picture book’s form and drawing examples from the four chosen picture books. Parts that are examined are divisions of signs in semiotics (and in the picture book theory), the picture book’s limits between for instance framework and content, fiction and reality, and book and reader, mimesis and the analytical problems with looking for truth, the impact of the picture book’s size and shape, and lastly illustration techniques and the influence that illustrator, materiality and reader have on the book. The essay shows how different involvements affect the meaning that is created in the picture book, how solid delimitations of different kinds can be problematic, and how words such as picture, text, paratext and content should be treated gently and consciously. Different ways of breaking with methods and thoughts of habit are presented, for instance by using Barad’s concept of diffraction. The essay ends by emphasizing the complexity that follows meaning, materiality and reading, the responsibility it demands of us and how picture book theory sometimes simplifies analysis. This essay stresses the importance of questioning how the methods and words we use affect what is possible to understand, but not in the sense that we should read in a paranoid and closed way, but rather open minded and with room for failures, reconsiderations and other ways forward. / Syftet med denna uppsats är att förstå hur mening och materialitet hänger ihop i fyra bilderböcker från 00- och 10-tal; Gittan och gråvargarna av Pija Lindenbaum, I skogen av Eva Lindström, Vem ser Dim? av Maria Nilsson Thore och Vi blåste bort ibland av Viveka Sjögren. Uppsatsen visar på hur olika inblandningar påverkar den mening som skapas i bilderboken, hur fasta gränsdragningar av olika slag kan anses problematiska, samt hur begrepp som till exempel bild, text, paratext och innehåll bör behandlas varsamt och medvetet. Olika sätt att komma runt upptrampade metodologiska tillvägagångssätt och tankespår presenteras, bland annat med hjälp av Barads diffraktionsbegrepp. Uppsatsen avslutas med att betona den komplexitet som följer med mening, materialitet och läsning, det ansvar detta avkräver oss och hur bilderboksteorin ibland fungerar förenklande i analyser. Denna uppsats lyfter vikten av att ifrågasätta vad de metoder och ord vi använder egentligen gör med vad som är möjligt att förstå, men inte i den mening att vi bör läsa misstänksamt och stängt, utan snarare öppensinnat och med utrymme för misslyckanden, omprövningar och andra vägar vidare.

This thesis takes as its area of exploration the papal chapel choir and its repertory, alongside the papacy and its patronage of the arts at the end of the fifteenth century. It draws on previous research concerning the singers, polyphonic manuscripts and artistic culture of the Vatican, but places Pope Alexander VI as the central figure of the thesis, showing schemes of patronage that shaped his reign. The research presents a transcription and analysis of the hymn cycle contained within the manuscript Cappella Sistina 15, alongside an assessment of the polyphonic music collection and places these against accounts of music making and evidence of music copying at the papal chapel during Alexander’s reign. The thesis also considers the environment of secular music making at Alexander’s court. In order to provide a context in which to understand this information, the life of Alexander VI is examined, tracing his artistic patronage and involvement with music both prior to his election and afterwards. Of particular note is the engagement of the artist Pintoricchio to decorate the papal apartments. Here, the artist’s representation of music as part of the seven liberal arts is analysed, providing a unique, contemporary and important insight into music practices in Alexander’s court. Three classifications of patronage are identified for Alexander’s reign, while also showing that these were strategies that he had used before he became pope. The music culture at the papal chapel is shown to be part of this strategy, through the consolidation of old music and the introduction of new music into the repertory, ending a task that had taken approximately 60 years. It shows that Alexander’s reign was an important period musically, that instituted new musical traditions and created an environment that prepared the way for the golden ages of patronage of Julius II and Leo X.
