The Effect of National Defense Substitute Service on Enterprise From a Human Resources Perspective

Liu, Pei-Yu 26 August 2008 (has links)
The Defense Industry Reserve Duty System¡]DIRDS¡^has been used in Taiwan for many years. This program enables science and technology industries to recruit talented people, who can contribute to the defense industry and the high-tech industries without interruption by regular military service. This study uses quantitative methodology and interviews with human resources and R&D managers to determine how this program has effected high-tech enterprises from a human resources perspective. Results of this study showed that DIRDS recruits exhibited four characteristics: high stability, high quality, high educational background, and high consistency with industry requirements. Due to these four characteristics, DIRDS recruits have become an important source of IT talent. DIRDS recruits can bring significant growth to R&D efforts and enhance the energy of development. The Defense Industry Reserve Duty System can thus help reduce manufacturing costs, improve operational effectiveness, and raise the prestige of corporate brands. Further analysis and discussion of our results show that for human resources planning, work arrangement with DIRDS recruits should be combined with the company's long term objectives. Recruitment and selection should be focused and strategic since DIRDS targets specialized skills. Training and development should focus on practical or on job training that is tailored to the abilities and temperament of the DIRDS recruit.

Teachers' literacy beliefs and their students' conceptions about reading and writing

Falcón-Huertas, Mildred 01 June 2006 (has links)
This investigation examined first-grade teachers' literacy beliefs and practices and its relationship with their students' conceptions about reading and writing. For the first part of the study a sample of 76 first-grade teachers, from two school districts in Puerto Rico, completed the Literacy Orientation Survey (LOS). The combined score of the LOS was calculated and used to categorize teachers according to their literacy beliefs and practices as constructivist, eclectic, or traditional. After matching by years of experience and educational level, a stratified random sample of six teachers, two from each literacy viewpoint (traditional, eclectic, and constructivist), and 48 first-grade students was selected to participate in the second part of the study. A simple random sample of eight students (four low-achieving readers and four high-achieving readers) was selected from the classrooms of each of the six teachers, who represented the three differing literacy beliefs. Individual interviews were conducted with the students, using Wing's (1989) interview protocol, in order to assess their conceptions of reading and writing. The results of this study regarding the nature of teachers' literacy beliefs indicated that most teachers appear to hold traditional literacy beliefs and practices, whereas a very small number of the participant teachers seem to hold literacy beliefs and practices categorized as constructivist. A statistical significant association was found between teachers' literacy viewpoint and students' conceptions about reading and writing. First-grade students whose teachers held a constructivist literacy viewpoint seemed to have more holistic conceptions of literacy, whereas students whose teachers held a traditional or an eclectic literacy viewpoint seemed to have more skills or test-based conceptions of reading and writing. Results indicate that first-grade students' ideas regarding the purposes and nature of reading and writing appear to be compatible with their teachers' literacy beliefs and practices. No significant relationship was found between students' conceptions of reading and writing and their reading ability. Implications for literacy teaching, learning, and further research are discussed.

Nacionalinės M.K. Čiurlionio menų mokyklos ir Užupio gimnazijos 9 ir 10 klasės vaikinų fizinio parengtumo, požiūrio į kūno kultūrą bei sveiką gyvenseną kaita per metus / Development of correlation between the attitude towards physical education and healthy lifestyle and the physical status of pupils in 9th and 10th classes at national M.K. Čiurlionis arts school and Užupis gymnasium in an year

Oliferas, Denisas 24 September 2008 (has links)
Tyrimo subjektas. Nacionalinės M.K. Čiurlionio menų mokyklos ir Užupio gimnazijos 9-10 klasių mokiniai (vaikinai). Tyrimo tikslas. Nustatyti Nacionalinės M.K.Čiurlionio menų... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Presently, the public opinion prevails that schools with artistic orientation are paying less attention to physical education and most frequently the pupils are focused on subjects in which they specialize – ballet, music, art. As we failed to find any relevant thesis on the subject, our determination was to carry out an experiment in order to compare the attitude towards physical education and healthy lifestyle of pupils in 9th and 10th classes at National M.K. Čiurlionis arts school and Užupis Gymnasium and clarify if the public opinion in question is soundly based. A couple years ago we performed a similar survey with the pupils of these gymnasia. The results confirmed that the „artists“ were better physically trained, nearly in all tests they were faster, stronger, slicker, etc. We were interested by the fact and now having concluded a new experiment we expect to reveal if indeed the „artists“ again have physical advantage ot it was a mere coincidence. The greatest problem of the schools, to our understanding, was inadequate qualifications of the teachers of physical education which were insufficient to enable them gradually and well train pupils, develop their physical capabilities. Therefore, we anticipate they will show interest in our thesis and draw conclusions for themselves and for their activities. The objective of the survey was to define the physical qualifications of the pupils in 9th and 10th classes at National M.K. Čiurlionis arts school and Užupis Gymnasium... [to full text]

I skriftens gränstrakter : Interpunktionens funktioner i tre samtida svenska romaner / The functions of punctuation in three contemporary Swedish novels

Dahl, Alva January 2015 (has links)
Punctuation is an indispensable element in formal and literary texts as well as everyday writing. Studying punctuation is therefore necessary in order to understand written language. Still, it does not fit easily into descriptions of language as an abstract, given system, composed of lexicon and grammar. Within the framework of Bakhtinian dialogism, however, linguists have started to study languaging as an interactive, situated process, meaningful in concrete, embodied utterances. While many such studies have focused on spoken language, this PhD dissertation is an attempt to study written language from a dialogical perspective. The aim of the study is to explore the functions of punctuation and to integrate the analysis of punctuation into a broader theoretical understanding of written language. This is achieved through qualitative analyses of three contemporary Swedish novels: DIVA by Monika Fagerholm (1998), Förvandling by Eva Adolfsson (2005) and Fadevår, tack för ljuset! by Fredrik Ekelund (2010). In order to discover the rich meaning of specific instances, linguistic details are studied in relation to different aspects of context: the local co-text of the sentence, paragraph, chapter and novel as a whole, relevant intertextual contexts, and, to some extent, contemporary literary movements and technological developments, etc. In all of the three novels, punctuation is an integrated element of style and characterization, and important thematic aspects of each novel are visible at the level of punctuation. General patterns are also to be seen, the most important of which concern, firstly, how punctuation divides the units of written language, and regulates the relationship between these units, and secondly, how shifts in voice and tone are constructed in the novels with the help of punctuation. Furthermore, punctuation can create visually iconic references. The results have many implications for further research. Punctuation is a necessary and integrated part of written meaning-making and should not be overlooked in text analyses. Moreover, punctuation plays a crucial role in the construction of aspects like viewpoint and discourse presentation, which can no longer be ignored. On the spatial surface of text, writers and readers create complex interplays of voices.

Modèles thématiques pour la découverte non supervisée de points de vue sur le Web / Topic Models for Unsupervised Discovery of Viewpoints on the Web

Thonet, Thibaut 23 November 2017 (has links)
The advent of online platforms such as weblogs and social networking sites provided Internet users with an unprecedented means to express their opinions on a wide range of topics, including policy and commercial products. This large volume of opinionated data can be explored and exploited through text mining techniques known as opinion mining or sentiment analysis. Contrarily to traditional opinion mining work which mostly focuses on positive and negative opinions (or an intermediate in-between), we study a more challenging type of opinions: viewpoints. Viewpoint mining reaches beyond polarity-based opinions (positive/negative) and enables the analysis of more subtle opinions such as political opinions. In this thesis, we proposed unsupervised approaches – i.e., approaches which do not require any labeled data – based on probabilistic topic models to jointly discover topics and viewpoints expressed in opinionated data. In our first contribution, we explored the idea of separating opinion words (specific to both viewpoints and topics) from topical, neutral words based on parts of speech, inspired by similar practices in the litterature of non viewpoint-related opinion mining. Our second contribution tackles viewpoints expressed by social network users. We aimed to study to what extent social interactions between users – in addition to text content – can be beneficial to identify users' viewpoints. Our different contributions were evaluated and benchmarked against state-of-the-art baselines on real-world datasets

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Therapists' perspectives of predisposing factors of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Parnell, Anthony Peter January 2014 (has links)
Background: The aim of this study was to explore the experience and sense making oftherapists working with clients who present with a PTSD diagnosis. The study engaged with therapists experience and understanding of predisposing factors to PTSD and how they incorporate this understanding into the therapy process. Further to this the experience of the therapists understanding of the influence of predisposing factors on the expression of PTSD was explored. Literature Review: A literature review is presented identifying core research relating to PTSD, predisposing factors to the development of PTSD and the treatments used when working with PTSD as a presenting issue. Methodology: To address the aims of the study 9 therapist participants were interviewed. Semi-structured, one to one, in-depth interviews were utilised to elicit participant’s experience of the issues outlined within the aims. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to identify re-current themes across the interviews and analyse the data, which emerged. Findings: The main findings present thirteen sub-ordinate themes that reflect the essence of the participant’s experience of the phenomenon under investigation. These were based around eight Super-ordinate (master) themes of Previous history, Therapy relationship, Psychoeducation and Normalisation, Identity, Culture, Attachment, Presenting Therapy Themes, and Support Systems. Discussion and Conclusion: The study identified the participant’s experience of predisposing factors on the expression of PTSD. There was consensus from the participant’s in relation to the significant impact of client’s previous life experience on their expression of PTSD. The participants further identified that the client’s previous life experience influenced their formulation and treatment of PTSD. Significant issues that were described by all of the participants regardless of their theoretical or therapeutic perspective were (1) the central importance of the therapeutic relationship, (without a strong, trusting and safe relationship the participants would not engage the therapy work), (2) the importance of in-depth history taking (identification of previous life experience and its impact on the current response to the trauma), (3) the impact of previous trauma(s), and (4) the impact of support systems, environment and identity. These issues are discussed alongside the existing literature around this topic. Additionally, suggestions for future directions of research and recommendations for practice are presented.

Élaboration de méthodes Lattice Boltzmann pour les écoulements bifluides à ratio de densité arbitraire / Elaboration of Lattice Boltzmann methods for two-fluid flow with possibly high-density ratio

Bechereau, Marie 14 December 2016 (has links)
Two-fluid extensions of Lattice Boltzmann methods with free boundaries usually consider ``microscopic'' pseudopotential interface models. In this paper, we rather propose an interface-capturing Lattice Boltzmann approach where the mass fraction variable is considered as an unknown and is advected. Several works have reported the difficulties of LBM methods to deal with such two-fluid systems especially for high-density ratio configurations. This is due to the mixing nature of LBM, as with Flux vector splitting approaches for Finite Volume methods. We here give another explanation of the lack of numerical diffusion of Lattice Boltzmann approaches to accurately capture contact discontinuities. To fix the problem, we propose an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation of Lattice-Boltzmann methods. In the Lagrangian limit, it allows for a proper separated treatment of pressure waves and advection phenomenon. After the ALE solution, a remapping (advection) procedure is necessary to project the variables onto the Eulerian Lattice-Boltzmann grid.We explain how to derive this remapping procedure in order to get second-order accuracy and achieve sharp stable oscillation-free interfaces. It has been shown that mass fractions variables satisfy a local discrete maximum principle and thus stay in the range $[0,1]$. The theory is supported by numerical computations of rising bubbles (without taking into account surface tension at this current state of development).Even if our methods are currently used for inviscid flows (Euler equations) by projecting the discrete distributions onto equilibrium ones at each time step, we believe that it is possible to extend the framework formulation for multifluid viscous problems. This will be at the aim of a next work.
