"Dare to let go"  : The unsecure and unexpected as potential in art-education.

Malm, Helena January 2021 (has links)
Abstract My objective with this master's thesis is to contribute development both to the education for art-teachers and to art education primary and secondary school.     This master thesis discusses three students’ different art-based processes in a visual project about sustainable site-specific design. The project is based on ethnographic documentation of a “non-place” chosen by students themselves. The students are working with visual ethnographic documentation, making pictures in different materials, process-documentations, process-dairy, reception-calls, portfolio-analysis and digital presentation. The project aims reflections over how students can transform their experiences and knowledge, and later, in their role as art teachers, using the visual methods learnt, and using the unexpected and uncertain as a potential, to organize education with primary school pupils. ‘     The purpose of the thesis is to study students learning in, about, and through visual processes in an art-project, where the design of the teaching includes risk-taking elements. To delineate the purpose, I will work on the following issues:  1. What is made visible in students' digital presentations regarding different learning processes, sub-results and final results at the denotative and connotative level?  2. What does the design of the teaching mean for the students’ learning, in relation to the following four problem areas: - Image production with materials, techniques and tools - Image, reception talk and image theory - Documentation, evaluation and assessment - The location, the drawing room and other conditions for picture teaching.  3. Will the unexpected and uncertain as a potential for learning, be made visible in the students' processes, partial and final results? If so, how?     This is a qualitative study of three teacher - students' digital presentations. The material in the study includes three teacher students' digital presentations from an exam in an art project; research notes from observations in four course elements; informal interviews with two of the students. All of the three students’ digital presentations start with ethnographic inspired documentations from their chosen “non-places”. These pictures is first analysed, through visual-semiotic analyse. With this result in mind the individual visual processes through different tasks combined with materials analyses with a semiotic gaze and results in three cases followed up with a process-analysis of the three cases.      The theoretical context of the study is based on constructionistic theoretical perspective and semiotics as a theory of analysis, problematising the four aspects of the learning-field of art-education, identified in the thesis’ systematic research overview. The aim is to discuss design of education and three students’ experiences of their process-oriented investigative artwork. A work based on divergent thinking, where processes and results are not predetermined and where neither students nor teachers can anticipate them and thus have to dare to let go, which is why the study wants to highlight the unexpected and uncertain potential in image education. The result shows three students’ different visual processes, both in what drove and inspired them, and how they worked in visual materials. It shows that the concept in the design of the task challenged the students to explore the unsecure and the unexpected.  Through their artwork and the studies four aspects design of education in teacher education and compulsory school were problematised and several new questions about education in art were raised.

Controversial issues in the visual arts education : A study on how visual arts education can enable the development of democratic competences through work with controversial subjects.

Morén, Belinda January 2023 (has links)
We are currently in a time of polarization in the political climate when more topics and issues are gaining controversial charge. Since school is a place where young people should have the opportunity to develop democratic knowledge and abilities which, in the long run, should act as a force of resistance against risky and undemocratic behavior, active work with the democratic mission must take place. But the Swedish Schools Inspectorate's latest report shows that 21 out of 30 primary schools in the country are failing in their work with the democratic mission.1 This study intends to investigate how visual arts education, through work with controversial subjects, can develop democratic abilities and skills.  As a starting point in the study, students' and young adults' perceived ideas, experiences and thoughts regarding the democratic potential of creative practices and the work with controversial subjects in the subject of visual arts are examined. I have interpreted their answers using discourse analysis as an interpretive framework and theories about which subject positions we take in the meeting with others and dissenters. The results show that the term "controversial" is complex and contextual and something that students shy away from talking about and working with. This seems to be due to a lack of ability to deal with dissent and engage in democratic conversation, mainly out of a fear of what others will think of oneself. It becomes clear that there is a need to work with these subjects because, according to the informants, it can train the ability to cope effectively with dissent, prepare for life after school and practices an ability that everyone shares equal right to learn. It is also evident that image creation is a medium that has a high potential for expressing opinions, waking emotions and making one think. During the process of writing the thesis, I have taken a double perspective where in parallel with writing, I have filmed myself reflecting on the process itself. The filmed reflections have been compiled in the video work Why is the difficult difficult? which was shown at Konstfack's spring exhibition. Ideas that arose during the work were presented at the Visual Arts Education Symposium on Democracy and the Future at the Spring Exhibition at Konstfack 25 May 2023 organized by Belinda Morén, Katarina Seth, Mari Eriksson, Sandrine Samuelsson and Amanda Sammeli. 1 Skolinspektionen (2022). The issue is directed to the following questions: What does the teacher who teaches Arts for students of the 7th grade of the elementary school on the formation of the concept? As this teacher teaches the color concept? He adopts a theoretical-pedagogical reference? The research had as general objective: investigate how art teachers think and act with the color concept. The following specific objectives have been defined: analyzed the understanding that art teachers of the 7th year of the cycle III have about concept; identify which color concept they express; analyze how teachers organize their actions in the teaching learning process; identify the factors of school context that influence in the teaching and learning of students. To investigate the problem were realized two steps. Bibliographical research and field research. The bibliographical research covered the period from 2004 to 2014, with a focus on color concept formation. The field research was conducted in three schools of the network municipal of teaching in Goiânia. The data collection included interviews with the subject and comments from art classes. In the analysis of the data was adopted the guidelines of Bogdan & Biklen (1994) for categorizing and systematizing of data outlining the following categories: education for the formation of concepts-the teaching of concept of color; the formation of concepts and the color concept, understanding of teachers; pedagogical theoretical conception of teachers; the factors that influence the teaching and learning of art. The results show that there is a preponderance of progressive trends in art education; the space factor causes tension and inhibits artistic activities; there is need for academic production of new textbooks that bring update on knowledge of the color concept and the need for making new teaching materials and school paints in the colors magenta and cyan.

Teaching Is My Art Now

Stanley, Denise Y January 2008 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / This arts-informed inquiry is grounded in the lived experiences of five self-proclaimed artists including the researcher, who have turned to careers in teaching at varying stages of their lives. The stories of their transitions and evolving identities as both artists and teachers provide the investigative focus for this study. Although this research is relevant to teachers more generally, it specifically focuses on those who have chosen to teach Visual Arts. Particularly suited to a postmodern, arts-informed inquiry, the diverse forms of knowing that create our everyday experiences are acknowledged. The researcher became the bricoleur who collaged the individual stories of the first year artist-teachers into an integrated work of art. This constructivist approach included the use of visual imagery to transcend linguistic description. Through artworks, photographs, a self-narrative and novelette, the multiple ways these early career Visual Arts teachers came to understand themselves and their journeys are explored. This study has the potential to inform novice teachers of the transitions they may experience as they enter the teaching profession. Possible challenges, including the recognition that idealised beliefs might be traded in for more realistic representations, are discussed along with the notions of teaching as an art and the concept of resilience.

Nine teachers in Goiania's municipal system participated as collaborators in the research. The methodological procedures used were observations, field notes and individual interviews. Based on Cultural Studies and principles of Visual Culture Education, this study adopts an epistemological approach that favors poststructuralist assumptions. It assumes that advertising images are relevant for a Visual Culture Education since they contribute to built and at the same time legitimize meanings that guide ways of perceiving, being and having dialogues with the world. The research opposes the prescription of content for the reason that it characterizes school submission to the university and indicate the need to identify and discuss the practices and aspirations that these teachers engage in their day-today teaching. Visual Culture Education highlights that today the visual arts teachers' challenge is not just work with images apart from those that are culturally considered art, but, especially, decide how to use them pedagogically. The research identifies, analyses, and discusses aspects of these teachers discourses and practices being able to produce questions for a Visual Culture Education.

In order to discuss variables of the teaching images about the professional education teacher, the teaching work of the Federal Institute of Goiás was investigated through questions about: a) the art teachers identities in a school of technicist tradition; b) the teaching training processes in transit and in different places from and beyond school; c) the historical contextualization of the Brazilian professional education matrices; d) the dialogues between the artistic work and the teaching work as actions that feed back. For methodological inventions, the issue discussed was: how does an investigation in art invite me to experiment the art and how this artistic production infiltrates in a research problem? By understanding the art research as a research narrative this study was built at the same time that it told its story - a metalinguistic game that took shape while maintaining a pedagogical dialogue with itself. In this sense, this study arrives in appoitments such as: a) an identity crisis of the federal network teacher; b) the tension movements for the art education in the technical education context; c) the reaffirmation and reconfiguration of the professional education colorization throughout our histories; d) the necessity and the urgency to think about the art teaching practice in the professional education scope; e) the collegiality as an inseparable element for the art teacher formation; f) the artistic work (or experience) approximation with the teaching work as a dialogical action. In this way, we experimented an archaeological exercise to dig our and other stories for the understanding and reconfiguration of our profession contributing to the identity constitution and our difference within the public education.

Böhmová, Z.; Adam and Eve - nudity in Art and what to do with it in art education. [Diploma thesis] Prague 2015 - Charles University, Faculty of education, 106 pages. This thesis is analysing nudity by comparing religious, moral and political documents with perception of everyday reality and artistic portrayal. It follows the changes of paradigm of nudity in European culture since the start of Christianity. The objective of this thesis is to find the roots of connection between nudity and abashment. It finds the origins of finding nudity erotic and its connection with pornography. In the didactic part it tries to introduce this topic into visual arts education, defining this idea throughout artistic activities and comprehension of the changes in perception of naked body in modern painting. With the use of the medium of painting the semiotic character of nudity is being researched as well as the signs that reference nudity.
