The lack of vision is a complex and diverse phenomenon, and it can interfere in individual¿s daily life producing limitations in several aspects of his life. It includes how he perceives and evaluates the quality of his life. This study aims to determine the self-concept of people with low vision or with blindness. It also identifies how they evaluate their quality of life and how they are noticed by their relatives. It is a descriptive survey which was carried out with 11 people with low vision, 6 people with blindness and their relatives. To the data collection it was used an identification form, the Escala Fatorial de Autoconceito - EFA (Factorial Self-Concept Scale), and the assessment tool, Quality of Life - SF-36. / Searching for the understanding of the relationship between the environment of a planned shopping center in the city of Recife, and the shopping experience of the visually impaired, this thesis was structured, emphasizing the stimuli present in such an environment. Thus, it seeks to also understanding the interpretation of the shopping experience of the people with disabilities visual perception through the elements of the physical and social environment. The choice of subject was motivated by the need for transformative research, covering topics and social actors little studied, as is the case of the visually impaired, as active consumers, but outside of the store, only in common a shopping environment, order to present a perspective of inclusion and pre-purchase affordability. Therefore, there were 12 episodic interviews and semi structured interviews with members of theBlind Pernambuco Institute and APEC in the city of Recife. There was also a participant observation through a walk at the mall, preceded by a field experience lived by the researcher, provided visually impaired, blindfolded, which provided an immersion in the reality of informants and environmental conditions. The study has interpretative approach and is characterized by basic descriptive qualitative research, with phenomenological basis, based on social constructivism theory. The data were analyzed according to the discourse analysis technique, the main result the realization that an environment designed with sensory elements not always fits in the reality of the people with disabilities visual. In the context studied, the physical elements contained in the retail environment end up away consumers with visual impairments, and determining the behavior of the people, both employees and regulars of the mall. Although the literature presents people as part of the social environment, based on the results, this research includes these, too, also in the physical environment, setting them up as barriers to accessibility. Thus, we propose a more humane posture, so that the retail environment to become inclusive and suitable for the the people with disabilities visual.

This study aimed to investigate and identify the teachers profile and thought on the knowledge and how to do relative to Assistive Technologies in the computing environment as a resource to include visually impaired in a public school of basic education (primary and secondary education) on the city of Araçatuba-SP. And even, it proposes a reflection on the use of these technologies in the classroom and resource classroom, based on the teachers arguments. The study was characterized by a qualitative and quantitative approach. Initially, it was included literature review of authors among which are: Freire, Morin, Perrenoud, Mitller, Carvalho, Mantoan, Valente Almeida. Aside from the literature review, it was conducted fieldwork with individual interview with 22 public school teachers (classroom and resource classroom), in order to know their views about: the inclusion of Assistive Technologies; the use of such technologies with the visually impaired; obstacles and advantages relative to use of Assistive Technologies; and received guidance on the possible use of these resources. In the data analysis procedure, we used the methodological approach of the collective subject discourse. The results showed the teachers difficulty to access the information on Assistive Technologies in a computer environment; the persistence of problems in teacher training; the lack of information about students with special educational needs and support staff; and the poor communication between the teachers of the classroom and the resource classroom.

Experiences of blind high-school learners regarding computer use

Grobler, Gert H. January 2014 (has links)
The visually impaired community forms a small but integral part of South Africa with the potential to contribute meaningfully to its infrastructure and society, yet blind learners still seem to struggle with computer use. There are various barriers that stand between blind learners and computer access. In this study, I explore the experiences of blind high-school learners (n=4) with regards to computer use. A qualitative case study was applied as research design at a high-school for the visually impaired. Data sources included semi-structured interviews and focus-group discussions, which were audio-recorded and transcribed. Observation-in-thecontext was documented in research diaries and field notes. Following thematic analysis, the following themes emerged: value of computer use for blind users; barriers related to blind computer use; and future solutions and possibilities of blind computer use. Insights may inform future conceptualisation and implementation of computer use amongst blind high school learners. / Mini-dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Educational Psychology / MEd / Unrestricted

Etické aspekty péče o osoby s těžkým postižením zraku / The ethical aspects in the tyflorehabilitation

Grubrová, Jana January 2013 (has links)
The submitted thesis deals with ethical aspects of the life of people with severe visual impairment. Since recently, likewise e.g. in medicine, the partner model of cooperation between the social services provider and the receiver is also preferred in the blind and visually impaired rehabilitation, the present state of manners in society was necessarily considered within the ethical deliberation, e.g. the historical development of the interest in people with severe visual impairment, traditional approaches to them, persisting prejudices, the moral field, which in practice project into attitudes and behaviour determining value hierarchy, as well as into the legal field, i.e. into sources and the situation of social legislation relevant for visually impaired people's lives. The theoretical part informs the reader about the fundamental terminology used in special pedagogy, social work and other related branches. Further, it focuses on the theoretical ethical resources applied to the field of the blind and visually impaired rehabilitation, the help of the welfare state embodied in the legislation, and it takes into account the spiritual dimension of the human personality and its significance for the visual impairment acceptance. The practical part contains the quantitative and qualitative research...

Exploring a voice user interface to convey information in an e-commerce website

Liljestam, Christopher January 2019 (has links)
Screen readers for visually impaired users are poorly optimized for e-commerce websites hence the exclusion of the content. It creates a societal need for accessibility of the content in e-commerce websites for the visually impaired users. This study explores how six blindfolded participants could co-design a Voice User Interface (VUI) in an e-commerce website to convey its information that creates a good user experience for visually impaired. The result of a co-design workshop with interaction design practices showed that a VUI should be humanlike and convey relevant information. Failed speech recognition and overwhelming information had a negative impact on the user experience. To cope with the problems, the VUI should provide more control to the users by conveying explicit confirmations and retrospective information from past shopping trips. Due to the difficulties in finding visually impaired participants, the design process was not completed hence the ideation needs an additional design process.

Outdoor-navigation in public spaces for the elderly visually impaired

Widqvist, Elias January 2019 (has links)
The elderly visually impaired is not only a neglected user group within interaction design but also a large one in our society. Within this user group, I discovered that they do not get enough exercise because of their inability to move in public spaces without feeling unsafe. To feel safe, they would have to use both their rollator and their white cane at the same time; an impossibility. This paradoxical issue brings forth design opportunities of both physical artifacts with combined effectiveness of a white cane and a rollator. Also, it includes an exploration with a user-centered design approach on how haptic feedback could help them navigate. Haptics being the suitable alternative for a non-visual interaction. An add-on attached to the existing rollator with sensors and haptic feedback would enhance the feeling safety of an elderly visually impaired and would enable them to move in public spaces to get their exercise.

Indoor Navigation For The Blind And Visually Impaired: Validation And Training Methodology Using Virtual Reality

Wang, Sili 24 March 2017 (has links)
In this thesis we propose a navigation instruction validation tool and an user training tool for PERCEPT system. The validation tool evaluates the navigation instructions using a virtual reality environment by ensuring that each path in the virtual environment can be traversed by following the navigation instructions. This validation tool will serve as a first automatic validation of navigation instructions prior to testing them with blind and visually impaired users. The user-training tool enables the blind user to explore and get familiar with the real environment by using the virtual environment generated in the Unity3d based game. The user interacts with the game using PERCEPT Smartphone client just like the user would interact in the real environment. Motion in the game is emulated using the keyboard. Motion directions follow the navigation instructions obtained through the Smartphone. This user-training tool will improve the users experience in the real environment by enabling them to explore and learn the environment a-priori to their arrival in the physical space.
