Pravicový posun v polské vnitřní bezpečnosti: regionální bezpečnostní důsledky pro NATO / Rightist shift in Poland's internal security: Regional security implications for NATOPehrson, Taylor January 2021 (has links)
Within the last decade, European states, particularly in the post-Communist and post-Soviet region, have elected more rightist-led governments. Poland is no exception and after a surprising election in 2015 led to a Law and Justice Party (PiS) government majority in the state, questions of how this political shift in the "role model" Eastern European state could impact Polish security began to circulate. (Lupitu, 2016, p. 25) This study analyses the PiS's security actions within its first year as the Polish government majority (2015-2016) to discern the potential agency political actors have in determining how regional security organisations function through a structure vs. agency framework. Using NATO as a unit of analysis, the study aims to synthesise regional security implications of Poland's political shift on the Alliance. To do so, a triangulated methodology is applied to four key security events and actions PiS took within 2015-2016 using both a document and news media analyses as well as three elite interviews. These four events include a controversial pardoning of the minister responsible for all Polish Special Services, lustration activities within Polish security agencies, a controversial dismissal of the head of NATO's Centre of Excellence in Warsaw and the Warsaw Summit of 2016. A common...

Inclusive education through the eyes of South African teachersMbatha Stainbank, Yolanda January 2018 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Education, University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education / This study explored the attitudes of teachers in three types of South African schools
(Mainstream, Full-service, and Special school) towards inclusive education in relation
to the support that they are receiving in the implementation of inclusive education in
their respective schools. Participants in this study were selected purposively from
mainstream, full-service, and special schools within the Johannesburg South district.
Data in the research was collected through individual teacher interviews. Data
obtained was interpreted using qualitative methods. Participants were coded (in
relation to the type of school they are from) in order to ensure anonymity in the results.
Data was analysed using Thematic Content Analysis. Thematic Content Analysis
allowed the researcher to descriptively identify, analysis, and report themes. It involved
the identifying of common themes throughout the text which describe significant
aspects of the data in relation to the research question. The computer programme
ATLAS was used in order to assist with the Thematic Analysis. Following the analysis
of data it was found that the attitudes of mainstream and full-service teachers towards
inclusive education are mostly negative in comparison to that of teachers in special
schools as result to the discrepancies in the level of support each teacher receives to
implement inclusive education (depending on the type of school they are in). The
former has implication in terms of how effectively inclusive education is implemented
in all schools in South Africa because in accordance to this study's findings support
for teachers should not be based on only the type of school teachers are in but also
the type of support teachers need individually. Also it was found that the ideals of
inclusive education are not fully accepted by all stakeholders (more specifically the
different units within the district) within the education department and this has
influenced how teachers view the relevance of inclusive education policies.
Considering the finding of the study, an exploration of how all stakeholders in the
education system view and practice the policy of inclusive education is seemingly
required in future research to better understand the state in which inclusive education
is currently progressing in South Africa. Furthermore due to teachers being a major
stakeholder in the implementation of inclusive education, it is important that continuous
exploration on their attitudes and that which may influence their attitude towards
inclusive education is done. Consequently, issues such as discrepancies in support
towards teachers due to differences in types of school need to be further investigated. / Andrew Chakane 2020

Magnetic forces in discrete and continuous systemsSchlömerkemper, Anja 28 November 2004 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is a mathematically rigorous derivation of formulae for the magnetic force which is exerted on a part of a bounded magnetized body by its surrounding. Firstly, the magnetic force is considered within a continuous system based on macroscopic magnetostatics. The force formula in this setting is called Brown''s force formula referring to W. F. Brown, who gave a mainly physically motivated discussion of it. This formula contains a surface integral which shows a nonlinear dependence on the normal. Brown assumes the existence of an additional term in the surface force which cancels the nonlinearity to allow an application of Cauchy''s theorem in continuum mechanics to a magnetoelastic material. The proof of Brown''s formula which is given in this work involves a suitable regularization of a hypersingular kernel and uses singular integral methods. Secondly, we consider a discrete, periodic setting of magnetic dipoles and formulate the force between a part of a bounded set and its surrounding. In order to pass to the continuum limit we start from the usual force formula for interacting magnetic dipoles. It turns out that the limit of the discrete force is different from Brown''s force formula. One obtains an additional nonlinear surface term which allows one to regard Brown''s assumption on the surface force as a consequence of the atomistic approach. Due to short range effects one obtains moreover an additional linear surface term in the continuum limit of the discrete force. This term contains a certain lattice sum which depends on a hypersingular kernel and the underlying lattice structure.

Forgotten Heroes: Lessons from School Integration in a Small Southern CommunityCate, Whitney Elizabeth 15 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In the fall of 1956 Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee became the first public school in the south to desegregate. This paper examines how the quiet southern town handled the difficult task of forced integration while maintaining a commitment to the preservation of law and order. As the strength of a community was being tested, ordinary citizens in extraordinary circumstances met the challenges of integration with exceptional courage.

This paper is in support of my thesis exhibition “Indirect Measure” May 5th – June 3rd 2017, at the Reece Museum, located on the campus of East Tennessee State University. This document is an account of my examination into what constitutes art and the change in my perception of the utilitarian ceramic vessel during my research into the perceived difference between craft and art. Using broad definitions, I define what I believe art to be and how it is different from, and the same as craft.

The Effects of Homography on Computer-generated High Frequency Word ListsGraham, Athelia 25 November 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This study investigated the significance of semantics in computer-generated word frequency counts in response to a call for new word lists (Read, 2000; Gardner, 2007). Read claims that no corpus projects to date have produced any "definitive, stand-alone word-frequency lists" (p. 226). Many researchers are wary of the fact that the concept of a word is never clearly defined in most studies that have dealt with word frequency counts. It is clear from the research that one universally acceptable construct for the concept of word does not exist. In fact, many past word frequency counts only examine word forms without considering the word meanings and the possible effects of homography on lists. Ming-Tzu and Nation (2004) did some research on the Academic Word List (AWL) that addresses some criticisms of word-frequency lists. They evaluate the extent of homography throughout the AWL. However, words found in the AWL are often not a part of the highest frequency word-forms in English. The present study focuses on high frequency words. It evaluates a randomized sample of 46 lemmas that occur at least 1500 times in the British National Corpus (BNC). A further random sampling of 200 examples for each lemma, in context, was semantically analyzed and tallied. One hundred of these examples were from the written portion and the other 100 from the spoken portion. The list of meanings for each word was compiled using conflated WordNet senses and some additional senses. Each context was double and sometimes triple rated. The results indicate that the impact of semantic frequency versus form-based frequency is considerable. The study suggests that the presence of homography tends to be extensive in many high-frequency word forms, across major registers of the language, and within each of the four major parts of speech. It further suggests that basing frequency on semantics will considerably alter the content of a high-frequency word list.
