Arfwidsson, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
“Look, we are many”- A case study about public opinion formatting as a motive for crowdfunding campaigns.Crowdfunding is a method of financing to fund various projects through small financial contributions from a large number of different people. This phenomenon has grown large in recent years, largely because of the possibilities opened up by the media technology platforms and social media. This study intends to examine whether there are projects that use crowdfunding without having a financial motive and urge. The results are based on two different media projects with political intentions and the data is developed through two qualitative semi-structured interviews.Study results show that there is projects run by forces other than financial. The two projects in this study set an example for political projects that have an public opinion forming motive. Both projects are working to bring the their subject of interest forward and act as debate tool for people who sympathize with their point of view. They are both convinced that communication between parts is very essential for survival. In the end a model had been created that shows the structure and different motives that the different parts of the crowdfunding campaign can have. Through transparency and continuous communication between founders and backers, that enable through digital sites, crowdfunding campaigns can change structures in society.KeywordsCrowdfunding, motive, public opinion forming, media production, The Wolves, Bikes vs Cars

Active noise reduction headphone measurement: Comparison of physical and psychophysical protocols and effects of microphone placement

Perala, Chuck H. 28 April 2006 (has links)
Currently in the United States, Active Noise Reduction (ANR) headphones cannot be tested and labeled as hearing protection devices (HPDs) due to inherent limitations with the existing psychophysical headphone testing standard, real-ear attenuation at threshold (REAT). This research focused on the use of a standard, for physical, microphone-in-real-ear testing, (MIRE, ANSI S12.42-1995), to determine if MIRE may be appropriately used to measure the total attenuation (i.e., passive + active) of ANR headphones. The REAT " Method B, Subject-Fit protocol," ANSI S12.6-1997(R2002), was also used to assess passive attenuation (and used for comparison with the MIRE data), as this is the current standard for passive Headphone attenuation testing. The MIRE protocol currently does not specify a standardized location for measurement microphone placement. Prior research is mixed as to the potential benefits and shortcomings of placing the measurement microphone outside versus inside the ear canal. This study captured and compared acoustic spectral data at three different microphone locations: in concha, in ear canal-shallow depth, and in ear canal-deep depth (with a probe tube microphone positioned near the tympanic membrane), using human test participants and five ANR headphones of differing design. Results indicate that the MIRE protocol may be used to supplant the REAT protocol for the measurement of passive attenuation, although differences were observed at the lowest-tested frequency of 125 Hz. Microphone placement analysis revealed no significant difference among the three locations specified, with a noted caveat for the probe tube microphone location at the highest tested frequency of 8000 Hz. Overall findings may be useful to standards-making committees for evaluating a viable solution and standardized method for testing and labeling ANR headphones for use as hearing protection devices. Microphone placement results may assist the practitioner in determining where to place measurement microphones to best suit their particular needs when using MIRE. Discussion includes an in-depth interpretation of the data, comparisons within and between each protocol, and recommendations for further avenues to explore based on the data presented. / Ph. D.

The Effect of Cations on Volatile Solids Destruction, Odors, and Dewatering in anaerobic digestion

Park, Chang Min 22 July 2008 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study is to understand the effects of wastewater sludge feed cations on volatile solids destruction, odor control, and dewaterability. The role of influent feed cations and addition of chemical coagulants to sludge were evaluated for those characteristics following anaerobic digestion. Wastewater sludge samples were obtained from seven municipal wastewater treatment plants. Subsequently, batch digestion of the sludges was performed anaerobically in the laboratory with 30 days of SRT. Conditioning with cationic polymer and dewatering simulating a high solids centrifuge were performed after digestion. It was found that volatile solids destruction and volatile organic sulfur compounds generation increased proportionally as iron content in influent increased. However, they decreased as aluminum content in influent increased. It was also found that as iron content in influent increased, higher optimum polymer dose was required for dewatering. On the contrary, increase in aluminum content in influent resulted in decrease in the amount of optimum polymer dose. Direct addition of iron to the digesting sludge can be the most efficient point of addition with respect to volatile solids destruction, odor control, and conditioning of digested sludge. / Master of Science

DO CARMO SÁ AZEVEDO LEMOS, MARGARIDA 07 March 2016 (has links)
[EN] Packaging is a permanent presence and takes a significant expression in daily life, it contains, protects, informs and gives character to the products, establishing an inseparable relationship between content and container. This research focused on formal, material and communicative packaging aspects of liquid food products, performs a mapping of the issues related to the interrelation of practical functions (performance for the user), aesthetic (configuration and interaction with the user) and symbolic (significance to the user) from the liquid food packages, having as confluence point the relationship content/ product container in the set of interactions/ user/ environment. Seen as an interface between the product and the user, the packaging of liquid food products, occupies an essential place in our society, allowing an uncountable number of products to reach the hands of those who need them, intact and in perfect condition. The package preserves the physical and temporal natural products, covering them and giving them shape, becoming a product skin like the skin of the fruit or human skin, prolonging their existence, with direct health benefits and well being of the populations. This thesis has as study object the packaging of liquid food products and how its shape expresses its identity, the concept and function of the product it contains and conforms. This research resorted to analytical studies, based on the reflections of Flusser and Lipovetsky, around the man and his relationship to the object and conducted the identification and recognition of archetypal packaging in the universe of reference products (milk, juice, water and hybrid drinks), as well as the morphological and qualitative comparative analysis of liquid food packaging in different materials (glass, multilayer cardboard, metal, plastic), having as a study focus the inseparable relationship between the content and the container. This study resulted in the achievement of Tetra Con)forma project goal so that provided the constructive possibilities of the multilayer material for forming a packagings for hybrid liquid drinks, emphasizing the concepts of nomadism (portability), customization (composition) and theatricality (convertibility), wherein the shape is expressed by the structural dimension portability, in the communicative by the composition and in the symbolic by convertibility.
