Artificial neural network modeling of flow stress response as a function of dislocation microstructures

An artificial neural network (ANN) is used to model nonlinear, large deformation plastic behavior of a material. This ANN model establishes a relationship between flow stress and dislocation structure content. The density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) was calculated based on analysis of local lattice curvature evolution. The model includes essential statistical measures extracted from the distributions of dislocation microstructures, including substructure cell size, wall thickness, and GND density as the input variables to the ANN model. The model was able to successfully predict the flow stress of aluminum alloy 6022 as a function of its dislocation structure content. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the significance of individual dislocation parameters on the flow stress. The results show that an ANN model can be used to calibrate and predict inelastic material properties that are often cumbersome to model with rigorous dislocation-based plasticity models.

No / Ultrasonic technology provides a powerful and noninvasive method of in-process measurement during injection molding and extrusion. Changes in the velocity, attenuation and reflection coefficients of high frequency sound waves can be related to the state and conditions of the materials through which they propagate. The velocity of an ultrasonic wave changes with density and elastic moduli; this allows information on solidification and material properties to be collected during the molding cycle. The time of flight of the wave is a function of velocity and path length. This paper shows that it can be correlated with the residual wall thickness of polymer in the mold during gas assisted injection molding.

Medir a espessura da parede vesical (EPV) através da ultrassonografia, correlacioná-la com os parâmetros urodinâmicos e avaliar o papel destes parâmetros para lesão do trato urinário superior. Avaliar também o papel das alterações da forma da bexiga nos resultados de injeção de toxina botulínica tipo-A (BTX-A) no detrusor em pacientes com lesão medular traumática (LMT). Trata-se de dois estudos. O primeiro é um estudo transversal de 272 pacientes com LMT submetidos à ultrassonografia renal e de bexiga e estudo urodinâmico. A parede anterior da bexiga foi medida e comparada com os dados urodinâmicos. A cistografia foi realizada em 57 pacientes. O segundo foi um estudo prospectivo avaliando os resultados da injeção de BTX-A no detrusor em 27 pacientes considerando os achados urodinâmicos (pré e pós procedimento) e as deformidades da bexiga (cistografia). A média da EPV foi de 3,94 mm e foi estatisticamente maior em pacientes com hiperatividade detrusora neurogênica associada à dissinergia vesicoesfincteriana (HDN/DVE), em comparação com aqueles sem DVE (p<0,001). Essa média também foi maior em pacientes com complacência < 20 mL/cmH2O, comparada aos pacientes com complacência &#8805; 20 mL/cmH2O (p<0,001). A média da pressão detrusora máxima (Pdet Max) foi estatisticamente maior nos pacientes com refluxo vesicoureteral (RVU) em comparação com aqueles sem RVU (100,7 vs 61,2 cmH2O respectivamente, p=0,022). Pacientes com complacência < 20 mL/cmH2O apresentaram prevalência de hidronefrose 4,2 vezes maior, comparada aos pacientes com complacência &#8805; 20 mL/cmH2O. Não houve associação estatística entre EPV e hidronefrose ou RVU. Vinte e sete pacientes foram submetidos à injeção de BTX-A no detrusor. A média de tempo de continência urinária foi de 8 meses. Nove pacientes (33,3%) tinham forma vesical alterada e 8 casos (29,6%) tinham divertículos. A capacidade cistométrica máxima, Pdet max, volume reflexo e complacência não apresentaram diferença significativa na presença de divertículos ou alteração da forma. O aumento da EPV está associado à complacência < 20 mL/cmH2O e HDN/DVE em pacientes com LMT. No entanto, não houve relação entre a EPV e hidronefrose ou RVU. Baixa complacência e HDN/DVE são os principais fatores de risco para dano ao trato urinário superior. A presença de divertículos ou alteração da forma vesical não influenciou nos resultados após injeção de BTX-A no detrusor. / To investigate the ultrasonographic bladder wall thickness (BWT), urodynamic parameters and evaluate the role of such measurements for the upper and lower urinary tract deterioration and also assess the role of changes in bladder shape in the outcome of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) into the detrusor in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). There are two studies. First study was a cross-sectional study involving two hundred and seventy two patients with SCI who underwent renal and bladder ultrasonography and urodynamic evaluation. The anterior bladder wall was measured and compared to urodynamic data. Cystography was done in 57 patients. The second was a prospective study about injection of BTX-A into the detrusor performed in 27 patients considering urodynamic parameters and cystography findings. Mean BWT was 3.94 mm. BWT was statistically higher in patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity associated to detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (NDO/DSD) and in those with compliance < 20 mL/cmH2O. Patients with low compliance (< 20 mL/cmH2O), had 4.2 times higher prevalence of hydronephrosis, compared to patients with compliance &#8805; 20 mL/cmH2O. Mean of Pdet max was statistically higher in patients with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) compared to those without (100.7 vs 61.2 cmH2O respectively, p=0.022). There was no statistical association between BWT and hydronephrosis or VUR. Twenty seven patients underwent injection of BTX-A into the detrusor. The average time of urinary continence was 8 months. Nine patients (33.3%) had altered bladder shape and 8 cases (29.6%) had diverticula. The maximum cystometric capacity, NDO, reflex volume and compliance showed no statistically significant difference in the presence of diverticula or altered bladder shape. Increased BWT is associated with low compliance and NDO/DSD in patients with SCI. However, there was no relationship between BWT and hydronephrosis or VUR. Low compliance and NDO/DSD are the main risk factors for the upper urinary tract damage. The presence of diverticula or changes in bladder shape did not influence the results after injection of BTX-A into the detrusor.

Artery Wall Imaging and Effects of Postmenopausal Estrogen Therapy

<p>Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause.</p><p>A noninvasive 25 MHz high-frequency ultrasound technique was validated in the imaging of superficial arteries by using an animal model. Ultrasound estimates of the artery wall layers obtained <i>in vivo</i> in the pig were compared to <i>ex-vivo</i> histomorphometry. Valid estimates of total artery wall and media thickness were found for the most superficial arteries. Adventitia thickness was underestimated and intima thickness overestimated in this animal model when non-atherosclerotic vessels were imaged.</p><p>To validate the clinical usefulness of separately estimating the artery wall layers in the human, the carotid artery wall was imaged in elderly subjects. Separate estimates of intima thickness, media thickness and intima/media ratio differed significantly between subjects with and without atherosclerosis and CVD, indicating that this noninvasive high-frequency ultrasound method might be a strong tool in monitoring changes in artery wall morphology associated with aging and development of atherosclerosis.</p><p>The investigation of intima thickness, media thickness and intima/media ratio of the carotid and femoral arteries in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women showed a maintenance of a thin intima and a preservation of media thickness and intima/media ratio at values similar to those obtained in women of fertile age. By comparing estrogen-users with age-matched postmenopausal nonusers, long-term estrogen therapy initiated at the time of the menopause seemed to counteract the increase in intima and decrease in media thickness associated with aging and development of atherosclerosis. The preservation of the artery wall morphology into older age might be a mechanism for the well-documented cardioprotective effects of estrogen when therapy is initiated early after menopause. However, long-term estrogen therapy showed no substantial effects on the age-related changes in arterial stiffness estimated at the aorta, carotid and femoral arteries, suggesting that any long-term cardioprotective effect that estrogen therapy may have is unlikely to be mediated by an impact on arterial stiffness. </p>

Patient-Specific 3D Vascular Reconstruction and Computational Assessment of Biomechanics – an Application to Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

The current clinical management of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) disease is based on measuring the aneurysm maximum diameter to decide when timely intervention can be recommended to a patient. However, other parameters may also play a role in causing or predisposing the AAA to either an early or delayed rupture relative to its size. Therefore, patient-specific assessment of rupture risk based on physical principles such as individualized biomechanics can be conducive to the development of a vascular tool with translational potential. To that end, the present doctoral research materialized into a framework for image based patient-specific vascular biomechanics assessment. A robust generalized approach is described herein for image-based volume mesh generation of complex multidomain bifurcated vascular trees with the capability of incorporating regionally varying wall thickness. The developed framework is assessed for geometrical accuracy, mesh quality, and optimal computational performance. The relative influence of the shape and the constitutive wall material property on the AAA wall mechanics was explored. This study resulted in statistically insignificant differences in peak wall stress among 28 AAA geometries of similar maximum diameter (in the 50 – 55 mm range) when modeled with five different hyperelastic isotropic constitutive equations. Relative influence of regionally varying vs. uniform wall thickness distribution on the AAA wall mechanics was also assessed to find statistically significant differences in spatial maxima of wall stresses, strains, and strain energy densities among the same 28 AAA geometries modeled with patient-specific non-uniform wall thickness and two uniform wall thickness assumptions. Finally, the feasibility of estimating in vivo wall strains from individual clinical images was evaluated. Such study resulted in a framework for in vivo 3D strain distributions based on ECG gated, unenhanced, dynamic magnetic resonance images acquired for 20 phases in the cardiac cycle. Future efforts should be focused on further development of the framework for in vivo estimation of regionally varying hyperelastic, anisotropic constitutive material models with active mechanics components and the integration of such framework with an open source finite element solver with the goal of increasing the translational potential of these tools for individualized prediction of AAA rupture risk in the clinic.

The main goal of the diploma thesis is to design the hydraulic part of the new piping system, which is added to the existing project of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant. At the beginning of the work is theoretical basis for the design of the hydraulic part. The next part is the selection of piping material for aggressive refrigerant with subsequent verification of the pipe wall thickness. The piping system is designed with specific components from the companies SIGMA GROUP a.s., ARAKO spol. s.r.o. and ARMATURY Group a.s. In the last part, hydraulic solution is developed and commented using the excel program. The piping system is processed into the drawing documentation including bill of materials.

Research on thermal modification of African alpine bamboo (Yushania alpina [K. Schumann] Lin) in terms of woven strand board (WSB) product development in Ethiopia

’African Bamboo PLC’ has the vision to become the first and the leading bamboo-based floorboard producer in Africa with export markets in Europe and America. African alpine bamboo (Yushania alpina), common in the highlands of Ethiopia, was used to develop woven strand board (WSB) products. Research on thermal modification was part of the product development. Samples were mainly collected in Tetechia (6°33‘ 34‘‘ N 38°32‘25‘‘ W, 2,650-2,700 m a.s.l.), located in the Sidama region. Three culms each of two, three, four and five years of age were harvested. Samples were taken from the middle of each internode to determine the moisture content and density. Samples used to assess the effects of thermal modification were cut next to them. Further test specimens from different areas and other species such as the lowland bamboo (Oxytenanthera abyssinica) were also investigated. The thermal treatment was applied in a kiln with steam as an inert blanket to reduce oxidative processes. Eight modifications were performed at temperatures of 160 °C, 180 °C, 200 °C and 220 °C, at durations of three or five hours each. Mass loss, sorption behaviour, impact resistance, resistance to indentation and contents of chemical components were analysed for the modified and unmodified samples. Yushania alpina is a thin-walled bamboo with a maximum diameter of 6 cm, moisture content of up to 150 % and densities of between 0.5 g/cm² and 0.8 g/cm². Moisture content, diameter and wall thickness decreased from the bottom to the top of the culms, whereas density increased. Two year old bamboo had the lowest and three year the highest density. The mass loss followed an exponential trend, with about 2 % loss at 160 °C and 16 % at 220 °C. This mainly reflected the degradation of hemicellulose, which was fully removed at 220 °C. Extractive contents, at less than 5 %, fluctuated. Lignin amounted to 30 % and increased appreciably. Cellulose reached contents of about 45 % and decreased slightly at high temperatures. The chemical change, which was based more on the temperature than on the duration of treatment, influenced the sorption behaviour and mechanical properties most of all. The equilibrium moisture content was reduced by between 10 % to 40 %, depending on the climate and modification temperature chosen. This reduction stabilised between temperatures of 200 °C and 220 °C. The impact resistance of untreated bamboo was 3.8 J/cm², compared to only 1.4 J/cm² for modified samples. Resistance also differed between samples from the outer and inner part of the culm in the transverse section. The resistance to indentation declined also. Unmodified samples had 47 N/mm², compared to only 20 N/mm² for strongly modified samples. The results of the analysis and the experience gained indicate that temperatures between 180 °C and 200 °C, held for three hours, lead to the best results for woven strand board production using Ethiopian highland bamboo. / ’African Bamboo PLC’ setzt sich zum Ziel, als erstes Unternehmen Holzwerkstoffe aus Bambus nach Europa und Amerika zu exportieren. Afrikanischer Hochgebirgsbambus (Yushania alpina), welcher vor allem im Hochland von Äthiopien vorkommt, wurde dazu verwendet ”woven strand boards” (WSB) zu entwickeln. Untersuchungen zur thermischen Modifizierung waren dabei Bestandteil der Produktentwicklung. Die dafür notwendigen Bambusproben wurden hauptsächlich in Tetechia (6°33‘34‘‘ N 38°32‘25‘‘ W, 2650-2700 m ü. NN), einem Dorf in Sidama, entnommen. Es wurden dazu je drei Bambushalme der Altersklassen zwei, drei, vier und fünf Jahre geerntet. Proben für die Bestimmung von Holzfeuchte und Dichte wurden in der Mitte jedes Internodiums entnommen. Diese spielten als Referenzprobe eine große Rolle. Neben den Referenzprobekörpern wurden die jeweiligen Stücke für die thermische Behandlung heraus gesägt, wobei dies nach einer bestimmten Systematik erfolgte. Neben den Proben aus Tetechia wurden für die Untersuchungen zudem Proben aus anderen Gebieten und von einer anderen Art, dem Tieflandbambus (Oxytenanthera abyssinica), hinzugefügt. Die thermische Modifizierung erfolgte unter Wasserdampf, welcher oxidative Prozesse verhinderte. Insgesamt erfolgten acht Modifizierungen bei Temperaturen von 160 °C, 180 °C, 200 °C und 220 °C und einer jeweiligen Haltezeit von drei oder fünf Stunden. In Anbetracht der unbehandelten und behandelten Proben wurden der Masseverlust, die Bruchschlagarbeit, der Eindruckswiderstand und die chemische Zusammensetzung analysiert. Yushania alpina ist ein dünnwandiger Bambus mit Durchmessern bis zu 6 cm, Holzfeuchten bis 150 % und Dichten zwischen 0,5 g/cm² und 0,8 g/cm². Holzfeuchte, Durchmesser und Wandstärke verringerten sich mit der Halmhöhe, wobei die Dichte hingegen anstieg. Zweijähriger Bambus hatte die geringsten und dreijähriger Bambus die höchsten Dichten. Der Masseverlust folgte einem expontiellem Verlauf mit Werten von 2 % bei 160 °C und 16 % bei 220 °C. Er widerspiegelte den Abbau der Hemicellulose, welche bei 220 °C schon nicht mehr vorhanden war. Exktraktgehalte fluktuierten mit Werten unter 5 %. Der Ligningehalt lag bei ungefähr 30 % und stieg merklich an. Der Cellulosegehalt erreichte Werte von etwa 45 %, wobei die Cellulose bei höheren Temperaturen leicht abgebaut wurde. Die chemischen Veränderungen, welche maßgeblich von der angewandten Temperatur statt der Behandlungsdauer beeinflusst wurden, wirkten sich auf das Sorptionsverhalten und mechanische Eigenschaften aus. Je nach ausgesetztem Klima und erfolgter Modifikation wurde die Ausgleichsfeuchte der Proben um 10 % bis 40 % reduziert. Die Abnahme der Ausgleichsfeuchte stabilisierte sich im Temperaturbereich von 200 °C bis 220 °C. Die Bruchschlagarbeit des unbehandelten Bambus betrug 3,8 J/cm², die des behandelten nur 1,4 J/cm². Die Bruchschlagarbeit variierte unabhängig von der Modifikation zwischen dem inneren und äußeren Abschnittes innerhalb des Halmquerschnitts. Der Eindruckswiderstand nahm mit der thermischen Behandlung ebenfalls ab. Unbehandelte Proben hatten 47 N/mm², während die modifizierten Proben nur noch 20 N/mm² aufwiesen. Anhand der Ergebnisse und erworbenen Erfahrungen lies sich schlussfolgern, dass Temperaturen zwischen 180 °C und 200 °C bei einer Haltezeit von drei Stunden für die thermische Modifizierung von Äthiopischem Hochlandbambus in Bezug auf die Entwicklung von ”woven strand boards” empfehlenswert waren.
