Wastewater use in Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh, India : An evaluation of irrigation water quality in reference to associated health risks and agricultural suitability

Hofstedt, Charlotta January 2005 (has links)
The use of untreated domestic sewage in agriculture is a growing practice in many parts of the world. It is being looked upon as a valuable and reliable resource in water scarce communities. Wastewater is usually rich in nutrients and the use results in high yields without the need for artificial fertilisers. But with the use of untreated wastewater follows a number of associated health risks, e.g. a higher prevalence of helminth infections has been seen among wastewater users compared to non-users. This water quality study was performed along the River Musi in Andhra Pradesh, India. The Musi River flows through the city of Hyderabad carrying the most of the town’s wastewater. Downstream of Hyderabad the wastewater is used by farmers for irrigation. Along the river weirs are constructed which diverts the irrigation water into canals and reservoirs are formed where the flow velocity slows down. The study area stretches from Hyderabad and 28.7 km downstream. The hypothesis was that the existing irrigation infrastructure acts like Wastewater Stabilisation Ponds and the aim was to quantify the impact of the weirs on water quality and to evaluate the irrigation water quality in reference to associated health risks and agricultural suitability. Within the study area the BOD, E coli and Nematode removals were 86.9%, 99.9% and 99.9% respectively. Despite the high removal the E coli and Nematodes, the concentrations exceed WHO guidelines for unrestricted and restricted irrigation, and there exists an excess risk of intestinal nematode- and enteric infections for farmers. Dissolved oxygen and salinity increases downstream and due to the high salinity farmers could experience reduced crop yields. By looking at removal patterns, and the change in water quality parameters, the conclusion can be made that the reservoirs act like anaerobic ponds in a Wastewater Stabilisation Pond system.

Calibration of a dynamic model for the activated sludge process at Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant

Hellstedt, Cajsa January 2005 (has links)
To simulate the activated sludge process at a wastewater treatment plant a dynamic model that describes the process is needed. In 1987 IWA, International Water Association presented ASM1, Activated Sludge Model No.1 which still is the most widely used model for this process. In this thesis the ASM1 has been used to describe the activated sludge process. The work is a part of a European project, HIPCON (Holistic Integrated Process CONtrol) at IVL, Swedish Environmental Research Institute. The main objective of the work was to calibrate a model that realistically describes the activated sludge process and secondary sedimentation at Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant in Stockholm. A benchmark model in MATLAB/Simulink was used as a base and rebuilt and extended to fit the process of Henriksdal. In the model ASM1 is used to describe the activated sludge process. The settler is modelled with a mass balance model where the settling velocity is described by a double exponential function. The parameters used in both models have to be calibrated to fit the wastewater treatment plant. To find information about Henriksdal two measuring campaigns were performed to provide data for calibration and validation and to gather information about the composition of the incoming wastewater. From this data a model was developed and calibrated for the process at Henriksdal. After calibration the obtained model worked very well for modelling average values but did not adjust quite as well to fast dynamic changes.

Ny slamhantering vid Hedesunda reningsverk / New sludge handling at Hedesunda wastewater treatment plant

Danielsson, Johanna January 2010 (has links)
Sammanlagt samlades sex olika svar in. / Hedesunda wastewater treatment plant (wwtp) is located in the southern part of Gävle municipality in Sweden. The wwtp treats wastewater from Hedesunda community and a few nearby villages. All in all there are approximately 1500 persons connected to the plant. Hedesunda wwtp was originally built in the 1960’s and was restored in the late 1990’s. At the restoration sludge drying beds were built on the site for sludge dewatering. Initially, these beds worked fine but since 2005 the dewatering result has not been satisfactory.   The objective of this master thesis has been to investigate different alternatives for a more effective sludge handling at Hedesunda wwtp in the future. Initially the sludge handling process was divided into two different parts: sludge dewatering and management of dewatered sludge. The focus has been on economical and environmental aspects of sludge handling and where it’s been possible these factors have been weight together.   The question of how a more effective dewatering of sludge could be achieved was answered by a questionnaire that was sent to different companies that supply dewatering equipment to the Swedish market. Altogether six answers were collected. Besides these answers the option of restoring the existing sludge drying beds was also considered. The latter was done by sampling and analyzing sludge in the existing beds, among other things. The different options for dewatering were compiled and compared in a matrix where every parameter was split up in intervals and assigned grades. Three options that received the highest total grade were considered the best options. These were: restoring the sludge drying beds, reed beds and a small belt filter press.   The matter of how to handle the dewatered sludge was simplified to a study of only two alternatives. These were to continue the present handling or to certify the sludge according to REVAQ and use it as fertilizer. Attempts to estimate the cost for the two alternatives were made. The cost for certification is higher than the cost for composting, but to certify the sludge will lead to a higher target achievement.   The study resulted in concrete suggestions for how the sludge at Hedesunda wwtp can be handled in the future. This suggestion states that the existing sludge drying beds should be restored and that the possibility to certify several wwtp:s within Gästrike Vatten AB should be investigated. It is not considered economically plausible to certify sludge from Hedesunda wwtp alone.

To Analyze The Relationship between BOD, Nitrogen And Phosphorus Contents at Constant Dissolved Oxygen Concentration In Municipal Wastewater Treatment

Zaidi, Syed Faraz Ali, Sudthanom, Juthatip January 2011 (has links)
In this report, the application of Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Square (PLS)  regression analyzing methods used to understand the relationship of interdependent loads in municipal wastewater treatment plant. Two different wastewater treatment plants were chosen for analysis of  the relationship between interdependent loads. Firstly, the collected data of incoming wastewater and outgoing water from both Västerås and Eskilstuna wastewater treatment plants were analyzed to find some relationship or correlation between contents and compare the data of both the plants. Secondly, the correlated contents were used to generate the regression model for predicting the value in the future, in this report we have focussed only on ammonium nitrogen value for regression model. The PCA study shows the variation between incoming and outgoing wastewater’s characteristics  given by  Västerås and Eskilstuna plant. / BOD, ammonium nitrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus

Energy savings with a new aeration and control system in a mid-size Swedish wastewater treatment plant / Energibesparingar genom ett nytt luftnings- och reglersystem i ett medelstortsvenskt avloppsreningsverk

Larsson, Viktor January 2011 (has links)
Within this study it was investigated how much energy and money that could be saved by implementing new aeration equipment and aeration control in Sternö wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Sternö WWTP is a full-scale plant built in 1997 and dimensioned for 26 000 population equivalents. The plant has two parallel biological treatment lines with pre-denitrification. During the study, one of the treatment lines was used as a test line, where new aeration equipment and control was implemented. The other line was used as a reference line, where the aeration equipment and control was maintained as before. The new aeration equipment that was implemented to support the test line was an AtlasCopco screw blower, fine bubble Sanitaire low pressure diffusers and measurement equipment. Two control strategies were tested: oxygen control and ammonium control. The results show that 35 percentage points of the test line energy consumption was reduced with the new screw blower. The diffusers saved another 21 percentage points and by fine tuning the controllers, the oxygen concentrations and the air pressure a further 9 percentage points could be saved. The ammonium control gave no energy savings, since the lowest allowed DO set-point (0.7 mg L-1) kept effluent ammonium below the ammonium set-point of 1 mg L-1.  The final energy savings of the test line was 65 ± 2 %. Each aeration equipment upgrade increased the energy savings with: •    Blower 35 %. •    Diffusers 32 %. •    Oxygen control with decreased DO concentrations and air pressure 21 %. The final savings correspond to 13 % of the total energy consumption of Sternö WWTP. These savings are equivalent to annual savings of 178 MWh, which decreases the energy costs by 200 000 SEK per year. The payback period of the implemented aeration equipment and control was 3.7 years.

Investigation of Microbial Fuel Cell Performance and Microbial Community Dynamics During Acclimation and Carbon Source Pulse Tests

Beaumont, Victor Laine January 2007 (has links)
Microbial fuel cells were designed and operated using waste activated sludge as a substrate and as a source of microorganisms for the anodic chamber. Waste activated sludge provided a bacterial consortium predisposed to the solubilization of particulate matter and utilization of substrates commonly found in wastewater. Dissolved oxygen and ferricyanide were used as the electron acceptors in the catholytes. Microbial fuel cell comparisons were made while operating under identical conditions but using the two different electron acceptors. Comparisons were based on the electricity production observed during MFC operation, wastewater quality of the waste activated sludge anolytes and the community level physiological profiling of the microbial communities in the anolytes. Electrons liberated during substrate utilization in the anodic chamber traveled to the cathodic chamber where they reduced the electron acceptors. The anode and cathode chambers were connected by a Nafion ® proton exchange membrane to allow for cation migration. Various soluble carbon sources were dosed to the microbial fuel cells at measured intervals during operation via direct injection to the anolyte. During bovine serum albumin dosing, average power production levels reached 0.062 mW and 0.122 mW for the dissolved oxygen microbial fuel cell and the ferricyanide microbial fuel cell, respectively. These were 100% and 25% greater than the power production levels observed throughout the rest of the study. Increases in current production were observed following the dosing of sodium acetate, glucose and bovine serum albumin. No increase in current was observed following glycerol dosing. Sodium acetate dosing triggered an immediate response, while glucose and bovine serum albumin responded in approximately 2 minutes. A chemical oxygen demand mass balance was calculated for both microbial fuel cells. The lack of balance closure was attributed to unmeasured methane production. An accumulation of particulate waste activated sludge components was observed for both microbial fuel cells. The anolyte pH during operation was typically less than waste activated sludge pH, which was attributed to volatile fatty acid accumulation in the anolytes during fermentation processes. Community level physiological profiling was accomplished through the analysis of ecological data obtained with BIOLOG ® ECOplates. Samples were plated and analyzed under anaerobic conditions, mimicking the environment in the anode chamber of the MFCs. ECOplate data were transformed by a logarithmic function prior to principle component analysis. The community level physiological profiling indicated that shifts in the microbial community profile, as measured through the carbon source utilization patterns, occurred throughout acclimation and following the dosing of various carbon source substrates. Shifts due to glycerol dosing differed from shifts due to the dosing of sodium acetate, glucose and bovine serum albumin.

Embedded Boundaries

Bresler, Liana January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of landscape as boundary: a study of its formation, inhabitation, and symbolic meaning. The study is situated in a valley located south of Jerusalem’s Old City walls; known as both Gei Ben-Hinnom and Wadi al- Rababa, it is an ethnic, cultural, socioeconomical, and mythological boundary. In the ethnically polarized Jerusalem, valleys often act as boundaries between Jewish and Palestinian populations. For nineteen years an official no-man’s-land divided the Hinnom/Rababa Valley, a result of an armistice agreement between Israel and Jordan. Since the 1967 annexation of East Jerusalem to Israel, the valley has transformed into a boundary between the two populations. Responding to this boundary, the thesis addresses an urgent need for a wastewater treatment facility, proposing new infrastructure as a vehicle to explore the ability of architecture to embody multiple narratives. By documenting built form, geology, hydrology, history, and mythology, the thesis illustrates the Hinnom/Rababa Valley as the space of the in-between, neither east nor west, bridging the urban hilltops with the underworld. The boundary partakes in both and neither sides simultaneously. Building on its multiplicity of meanings – of its ‘stories so far’ – the thesis attempts to re-imagine a new relationship to the ground.

The application of A/O-MBR system for domestic wastewater treatment in Hanoi / Ứng dụng công nghệ A/O kết hợp màng vi lọc để xử lý nước thải sinh hoạt ở Hà Nội

Tran, Thi Viet Nga, Tran, Hoai Son 06 August 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The study aims to investigate an appropriate wastewater treatment process to treat domestic wastewater in Hanoi City which contain low-strength for COD (120-200 mg/L) but high in nitrogen content (10-40 mg/L). A lab scale anoxic-oxic system with a hollow fiber-Membrane Separation Bioreactor was operated at a flow rate of 5-10 L/h over a period of 150 days. The reactor was operated at different sludge recirculation rates. The MBR maintained relatively constant transmembrane pressure. During 150 days of reactor operation, treated water quality have COD of around 20 mg/L, NH4-N of less than 1 mg/L, NO3-N of less than 5 mg/L. The system shows good and stable efficiency for organic matter and nitrogen removal without adding an external carbon source and coagulants. The results based on the study indicated that the proposed process configuration has potential to treat the low-strength wastewater in Hanoi.

Microbial Impacts of Selected Pharmaceutically Active Compounds Found in Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plants

Wang, Shuyi January 2009 (has links)
<p>Large amounts of human pharmaceutical products are consumed worldwide. Many drugs and their metabolites, referred to as pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), are not fully metabolized prior to household discharge resulting in their common occurrence in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In most instances, WWTPs present the first treatment opportunity for removing PhACs and preventing significant environmental exposure. Because most municipal WWTPs rely on the microbial component of the activated sludge process, there is a need to estimate the influence of PhACs in wastewater influent on the activated sludge microbial communities and the treatment performance of WWTPs. The objective of this dissertation was to determine the impact of selected PhACs (i.e., ketoprofen, naproxen, clofibric acid, carbamazepine and gemfibrozil) on activated sludge microorganisms and key individual microbial species in domestic wastewater treatment. Analyses were performed in batch reactors initially and then in laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR) which mimic WWTP operations. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were selected as indicator organisms because of their importance in wastewater treatment and demonstrated sensitiveness to toxic compounds. </p><p>The batch experiments results suggested that microbial growth inhibition was correlated to organic loadings. In the presence of 0.2% (v/v) ethanol, significant inhibition, ranging from 34 to 43%, was observed for all PhACs other than clofibric acid. </p><p>Nitrification inhibition studies using Nitrosomonas europaea, a model AOB strain showed that ketoprofen, naproxen, carbamazepine and gemfibrozil inhibited nitrite production. The corresponding maximum nitrification inhibition rates were 25, 29, 22 and 26%, respectively. Inhibition was shown to increase with PhAC concentration for concentrations greater than 0.1 µM. Results from membrane integrity tests suggest that the inhibition may be due to the disturbance of the cell membrane by PhACs and such inhibition was shown to be irreversible. </p><p>Even though PhACs were shown to inhibit the nitrification rate in pure culture studies, the performance of SBRs exposed to individual PhACs was not adversely affected neither in terms of COD nor ammonia removal. Microbial fingerprinting for both total bacteria and AOB confirmed that no significant shifts occurred when microbial communities were exposed to PhACs. However, some PhACs introduced in binary mixture were found to both inhibit the nitrification of N. europaea as well as the performance of SBRs. The mixture composed of 0.5 &#956;M ketoprofen and 0.5 &#956;M naproxen showed significant inhibition (25%) on the nitrite production of N. europaea although neither 0.5 &#956;M ketoprofen nor 0.5 &#956;M naproxen had significant effect when presented alone. Similarly, both COD and ammonia removal were significantly impacted by binary mixtures of PhACs. These results suggest that mixture effects can play an important role in an overall treatment's nitrification potential and this phenomenon should be further investigated.</p> / Dissertation

Energy Conservation Studies for Activated Sludge Processes of Urban Wastewater Treatment Plants In Taiwan

Liu, Chiung-Hsien 06 July 2012 (has links)
Most of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are operated under low loading both in water quality and water capacity (flow rate) in Taiwan. Because various treatment methods used in WWTP would cause different power consumptions. In general, the flow rate of wastewater treated is proportional to the power consumption. The purpose of this study is simulating water quality and water capacity with a case of municipal wastewater treatment plant, using standard activated sludge method. In this work we will investigate the feasibility of save power using operation and parameters adjustment in wastewater system. A further step is to conduct the save energy in current WWTP under normal wastewater treatment capacity and national effluent standard. Results showed the major save energy was at inflow pump and aeration system of biological treatment stage. Both power consumptions of two were about 60 ~70 % of total power consumption in the plant. Thus we should focus the operating conditions to plan the save energy project, and calculate the total power system and energy consumption of all unit facilities before we are going to improve the energy save in WWTP. Important note is firstly to select units and facilities having high energy consumption for evaluating the possibility of energy save. Secondly is develop and using a good management system to attain the goal of save energy.
