Arabic script can't be copied into UIR / The importance of this work rests upon the fact that notwithstanding Abu Huraira's eminent status among Prophet Muammad's companions as the most noteworthy reporter of Prophetic traditions on the basis of which scholars have compiled his reports on numerous subjects into separate tracts no research of academic standing has been done on his contributions to Qur'anic exegesis by systematically extracting his narrations and evaluating them. The current dissertation begins by offering this research contribution followed by a discussion of Abu Huraira's biography. Then all his narrations are systematically presented from beginning to end. Such reports contain both explicit and implicit statements that can be traced to the Prophet. Not all verses or chapters of the Qur'an are covered in this way for example there are no reports relating to chapter 77. Regime security and Kyrgyz foreign policy

This thesis presents a comprehensive study of Kyrgyz foreign policy from the early 1990s to 2011. It seeks to answer the following research question: how and to what extent does regime security affect Kyrgyz foreign policymaking? In so doing, this work aims to contribute to the understanding of Central Asian politics and the foreign policy sources of weak states across the post-Soviet space. The underlying theme of this dissertation is centred on the question whether neorealist or constructivist traditions provide a more in-depth account of the erratic Kyrgyz foreign policymaking. Notwithstanding a myriad of studies on weak states, the analysis of their foreign policies is limited and mostly characterised by idiosyncratic, reductionist and great power approaches. In this respect, an interpretive and inductive framework integrative of both internal and external variables and with properly contextualised causal mechanisms may explain the international behaviour of weak states in broader and more genuine terms. Thus, the puzzle to be resolved is whether the concepts of rent-seeking and virtual politics can either substitute for or complement the New Great Game narratives in the context of weak states in general and Kyrgyzstan in particular.

Relationship Status: It's Complicated - The Role of Narcissism in the Development of Relationships Through Facebook

The presence of both narcissism and social capital in the digital social networking site Facebook is altering the dynamic of relationship development. Therefore, the central research question directing this study is as follows: What role do narcissistic personality traits play in bridging social capital on Facebook? From this, two sub-questions are raised: 1) What are the motives for users to express narcissistic traits through Facebook? 2) How is narcissistic-motivated activity influencing social capital development through Facebook? Guiding this thesis are concepts of social tie relationships (as they apply to narcissism), and digital social networks. An exploratory study of in-depth interviews was utilized to conduct such research. A key objective in this thesis is understanding motive and purpose for generating social capital in an online environment. The findings from this study suggest Facebook is a facilitator for the expression of narcissistic traits. As a result, this is influencing the disconnected and questionable value of digital social capital.

Aerodynamics of battle damaged finite aspect ratio wings

When an aircraft is aerodynamically or structurally damaged in battle, it may not able to complete the mission and the damage may cause its loss. The subject of aircraft battle survivability is one of critical concern to many disciplines, whether military or civil. This thesis considered and focused on Computational Fluid Dynamics [CFD] predictions and experimental investigations into the effects of simulated battle damage on the low-speed aerodynamics of a fmite aspect ratio wing. Results showed that in two-dimensional [2d] and three-dimensional [3D] CFD simulations, Fluent's® models work reasonably well in predicting jets flow structures, pressure distributions, and pressure-coefficient Cp's contours but not for aerodynamic coefficients. The consequences were therefore that CFD prediction was poor on aerodynamic-coefficients increments. The prediction of Cp's achieved good agreement upstream and near the damage hole, but showed poor agreement at downstream of the hole. For the flow structure visualisation, at both weak and strong jet incidences, the solver always predicted pressure-distribution-coefficient lower at upstream and higher at downstream. The results showed relatively good agreement for the case of transitional and strong jet incidences but slightly poor for weak jet incidences. From the experimental results of Finite Wing, the increments for Aspect-ratio, AR6, AR8 and ARIO showed that as damage moves out towards the tip, aerodynamic-coefficients increments i.e. lift-loss and drag-rise decreased, and pitching-moment-coefficient increment indicated a more positive value at all incidence ranges and at all aspect ratios. Increasing the incidence resulted in greater magnitudes of lift-loss and drag-rise for all damage locations and aspect ratios. At the weak jet incidence 4° for AR8 and in all of the three damage locations, the main characteristics of the weak-jet were illustrated clearly. The increments were relatively small. Whilst at 8°, the flow structure was characterised as transitional to stronger-jet. In Finite Wing tests and for all damage locations, there was always a flow structure asymmetry. This was believed to be due to gravity, surface imperfection, and or genuine feature. An 'early strong jet' that indicated in Finite Wing-AR8 at 'transitional' incidence of 8°, also indicated in twodimensional results but at the weak-jet incidence of 4°. For the application of 2d data to AR6, AR8, and ARIO, an assessment of 2d force results led to the analysis that the tests in the AAE's Low Turbulence Tunnel for 2d were under-predicting the damage effects at low incidence, and over-predicting at high incidences. This suggested therefore that Irwin's 2d results could not be used immediately to predict three-dimensional.

THE EFFECT OF PORE DENSITY AND DISTRIBUTION ON FATIGUE WEAK LINKS IN AN A713 CAST ALUMINUM ALLOY

The effects of pore density and distribution were investigated on the fatigue crack initiation behavior in an A713 sand cast aluminum alloy plate of 12 mm thickness. The applied stress- the number of cycles to failure (S-N) curves of the samples taken from 2 mm and 5 mm from the free surface were obtained using four-point bend fatigue testing at room temperature, frequency of 20 Hz, stress ratio of 0.1, sinusoidal waveform, and in ambient air. The fatigue strengths of both, the 2 mm and 5 mm samples were 60% of the yield strength (σy=171.9 MPa) of the alloy. Optical microscopy, SEM, and EDS mapping were used to characterize pores and particles in 2 mm and 5 mm samples. The average pore sizes of the 2 mm and 5 mm samples were measured to be 10 to 14 μm, and 14 to 32 μm, respectively. The pore number densities in 5 mm and 2 mm samples were comparable, but higher number densities of non-clustered coarse pores (gas pores) were observed in 5 mm samples. The crack population found after fatigue testing showed a Weibull function of stress level. The peaks of strength distributions of fatigue weak link density of 5 mm and 2 mm samples were measured to be 0.017 mm-2 at 67.6 % σy, and 0.01027 mm-2 at 69.5% σy. Crack populations, when normalized by number densities of gas pores (non-clustered) and number densities of shrinkage pores (clustered), giving crack nucleation rate (crack/pore, mm-2), showed a good fit with the Weibull function in 2 mm and 5 mm samples. Shrinkage and gas pores could both become the main crack initiation sites (i.e. fatigue weak links) in this alloy. Higher nucleation rates of gas pores and shrinkage pores were observed in 5 mm samples compared to those rates in 2 mm samples. At high applied stresses, the 2 mm samples showed better fatigue lives than those of 5 mm samples. Fractured surfaces were analyzed using SEM and found that the main crack initiation were predominately from pores. The pores on the fractured surfaces were counted and their depth and width were measured. It was found that the cracks may not necessarily initiate from coarse pores, but sometimes from shrinkage pores (i.e. group of pores). The depth from the free surface, the width, the size, and the orientation of pores are key factors in increasing the driving force for crack initiation and subsequently those pores turn into long cracks. Moreover, the aspect ratios of pores on the main cracks were measured and found that in 5 mm samples, some pores have an aspect ratios of less than 0.7, which means that these pores are elongated in depth and have a narrow width which increase the stress concentration on the surface, thus, increasing the driving force for crack nucleation.

Etudes des propriétés de transport de mono et de multicouches de graphène épitaxiées sur sic / Study of transport properties of single and multilayers of epitaxial graphene on SiC

Nous présentons dans ce travail la caractérisation, essentiellement en transport, de couches de graphène épitaxiés élaborées par sublimation contrôlée de carbure de silicium (SiC). Des mesures de transport électroniques sont effectuées à basse température (T~1,6 K) et à fort champ magnétique. Dans une première partie, Il est indispensable de se focaliser sur la méthode spécifique (‘graphite cap') utilisée pour la fabrication de tous les échantillons étudiés dans ce travail au CNM, Barcelone. La méthode de ‘graphite cap' permet d'obtenir des couches de graphène en formes de rubans suffisamment isolés entre eux pour la fabrication de dispositifs électroniques. La croissance de graphène donne des résultats très différents suivant les conditions de croissance et les spécificités du substrat de carbure de silicium employé : les échantillons obtenus sur face carbone, et les échantillons sur face silicium.Sur face carbone, deux polytypes de SiC ont été utilisés pour l'élaboration de graphène : (i) sur le polytype ‘6H-SiC (on axis)', des rubans de graphène de l'ordre de 600 µm de longueur et de 6 µm de largeur sont obtenus. La largeur de graphène reste faible car le graphène suit la formation des marches sur le SiC résultant de la reconstruction de la surface pendant la croissance (‘step bunching'). Des monocouches ont été identifiées par spectroscopie Raman. Les résultats de transport sur ces monocouches montrent que la concentration de porteurs, de type trous, varie entre 5x1012cm-2 et 5x1013cm-2. L'effet Hall quantique n'est pas observé à cause du dopage élevé. Mais des oscillations de Shubnikov de Haas ont été bien résolues et étudiées pour extraire leurs phases. La phase des oscillations est égale à zéro, ce qui est une signature de la présence d'une monocouche de graphène.(ii) sur le polytype ‘4H-SiC (8° off axis)', les rubans obtenus sont plus larges et peuvent atteindre une longueur de 600 µm et une largeur de 50 µm. L'utilisation d'un substrat SiC avec une désorientation intentionnelle lors du clivage de la surface initiale permet la coalescence des rubans de graphène. Les résultats de transport sur les monocouches montrent que les porteurs sont toujours de type trous, mais beaucoup moins dopé sur plusieurs monocouches (de l'ordre 8x1011cm-2). L'effet Hall quantique est reporté sur un échantillon dont la mobilité atteint 11 000 cm²/V.s. Une étude à bas champ magnétique est encore réalisée et donnent des informations intéressantes sur l'(anti)localisation faible. Tous les phénomènes quantiques observés sont des signatures sur les propriétés intrinsèques des monocouches de graphène. Pour mieux appréhender le graphène épitaxié, il est important de faire varier la concentration de porteurs. Pour cela, une autre approche est proposée. Nous avons fabriqué une face arrière d'un échantillon semi-isolant par implantation d'ions d'azotes dans le SiC avant la croissance de graphène. Les résultats de transport obtenus sur les monocouches de graphène ont montré l'efficacité de cette grille pour contrôler le type de porteurs. L'effet Hall quantique a été observé pour les deux types de porteurs avec des plateaux de Hall remarquables en largeur (23 T).Sur la face Si, des multicouches de graphène couvrent uniformément toute la surface du substrat. Les multicouches de graphène sont plus épaisses sur les bords de marches que sur les terrasses, identifiées par spectroscopie Raman. Les porteurs sont maintenant de type électrons grâce à la couche de tampon qui existe sur la face Si. Les résultats de transport en champ magnétique et à basse température détectent l'existence d'une anisotropie électrique dues principalement aux marches du substrat SiC. / In this work, we present the characterization, mainly in transport, of epitaxial graphene layers produced by controlled sublimation of silicon carbide substrate (SiC). Electronic transport measurements are performed at low temperature (T ~ 1.6 K) and high magnetic field. In the first part, we explain the specific method ('graphite cap') used for growth of the samples studied in this work at CNM, Barcelona. The method of 'graphite cap' provides graphene ribbons homogeneous and isolated for the fabrication of electronic devices.Graphene on SiC gives very different results depending on the conditions of growth (temperature, pressure…) and the face of SiC substrate used: carbon face (C-face) or silicon face (Si-face).On the carbon face, two SiC polytypes have been used for the graphene growth:(i) On axis 6H-SiC: graphene ribbons are obtained on the whole surface. The length of ribbon approaches 600 µm and the width do not exceed 6 µm. The graphene follows the formation of steps on the SiC resulting from surface reconstruction during growth (‘step bunching'), which affects the graphene width. Monolayers were identified by Raman spectroscopy. For all measured samples, we found that the graphene is p-typed doped with a Hall concentration between 5x1012 and 5x1013cm-2. The quantum Hall effect is not observed because of the high doping level. But the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations (SdH) have been well resolved and studied. The phase of the oscillations is equal to zero, which is a signature from the presence of graphene monolayer.(ii) 8° off axis 4H-SiC: graphene ribbons obtained are larger and can reach a length of 600 µm and a width of 50 µm. The use of a SiC substrate with intentional disorientation upon cleavage of the initial surface allows the coalescence of the graphene ribbons. For all measured devices on this sample, we found that the graphene is p-typed doped (as determined from the sign of the Hall effect) with a Hall concentration between 8x1011 and 1013 cm-2. Mobilities varied between 1000 and 11000 cm²/Vs from device to device at 4K. Magnetoresistance revealed both Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, and interference phenomena (weak localization and antilocalization). For some low doped devices, Quantum Hall effect was observed. All quantum phenomena observed are signatures on the intrinsic properties of graphene monolayers.The main drawback of the epitaxial growth technique is the difficulty to control of the carrier density. Here, we investigate a bottom gate of a graphene device, epitaxially grown on the C-face of SiC substrate. The gate was realized by Nitrogen atoms implantation in the SiC crystal. The transport measurements have shown the effectiveness of the gate to control the type of carriers. The quantum Hall effect was observed for both types of carriers with remarkable Hall plateaus width (23 T).On the silicon face, we discuss results obtained from few layer graphene (FLG) grown epitaxially on the (0001) surface of a 6H-SiC substrate. Carriers are now like electrons through the buffer layer that exists on the Si face. The resulting FLG uniformly covers the substrate on which large step bunched terraces are also visible. The FLG is thicker at the step edges, as evidenced by micro-Raman analysis. Indeed, a noticeable anisotropy of the resistance has been detected by magnetotransport measurements at low temperature and high magnetic field. We will argue that this anisotropy originates from different mobilities, in the terraces and at the step edges.

Quelques résultats mathématiques sur les gaz à faible nombre de Mach / Some mathematical results on gases with small Mach number

Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude de la dynamique des gaz à faible nombre de Mach. Le modèle étudié provient des équations de Navier-Stokes complètes lorsque le nombre de Mach tend vers zéro. On cherche à montrer que le problème de Cauchy correspondant est bien posé. Les cas visqueux et non visqueux sont tous deux considérés. Les coefficients physiques peuvent dépendre de la densité (ou de la température) inconnue. En particulier, nous prenons en compte les effets de conductivité thermique et on autorise de grandes variations d'entropie. Rappelons qu'en absence de diffusion thermique, la limite à faible nombre de Mach implique la condition d'incompressibilité. Dans le cadre étudié ici, en introduisant un nouveau champ de vitesses à divergence nulle, le système devient un couplage non linéaire entre une équation quasi-parabolique pour la densité et un système de type Navier-Stokes (ou Euler) pour la vitesse et la pression. Pour le cas avec viscosité, on établit le résultat classique, à savoir qu'il existe une solution forte existant localement (resp. globalement) en temps pour des données initiales grandes (resp. petites). On considère ici le problème de Cauchy avec données initiales dans des espaces de Besov critiques. Lorsque les coefficients physiques du système vérifient une relation spéciale, le système se simplifie considérablement, et on peut alors établir qu'il existe des solutions faibles globales en temps à énergie finie. Par un argument d'unicité fort-faible, on en déduit que les solutions fortes à énergie finie existent pour tous les temps positifs en dimension deux. Pour le cas sans viscosité, on montre d'abord le caractère bien posé dans des espaces de Besov limites, qui s'injectent dans l'espace des fonctions lipschitziennes. Des critères de prolongement et des estimations du temps de vie sont établis. Si l'on suppose la donnée initiale à énergie finie dans l'espace de Besov limite à exposant de Lebesgue infini, on a également un résultat d'existence locale. En dimension deux, le temps de vie tend vers l'infini quand la densité tend vers une constante positive. Des estimations de produits et de commutateurs, ainsi que des estimations a priori pour les équations paraboliques et pour le système de Stokes (ou d'Euler) à coefficients variables, se trouvent dans l'annexe. Ces estimations reposent sur la théorie de Littlewood-Paley et le calcul paradifférentiel / This thesis is devoted to the study of the dynamics of the gases with small Mach number. The model comes from the complete Navier-Stokes equations when the Mach number goes to zero, and we aim at showing that it is well-posed. The viscous and inviscid cases are both considered. The physical coefficients may depend on the unknown density (or on the unknown temperature).In particular, we consider the effects of the thermal conductivity and hence large variations of entropy are allowed. Recall that if there is no thermal diffusion, then the low Mach number limit just implies the incompressibility condition. In the framework considered here, by introducing a new solenoidal velocity field, the system becomes a nonlinear coupling between a quasi-parabolic equation for the density and an evolutionary Stokes (or Euler) system for the velocity and the pressure. For the case with viscosity, we establish classical results, namely the strong solutions exist locally (resp. globally) in time for big (resp. small) initial data. We consider the Cauchy problem in the critical Besov spaces with the lowest regularity. Under a special relationship between the two physical coefficients, the system recasts in a simpler form and one may prove that there exist weak solutions with finite energy. In dimension two, this implies that strong solutions with finite energy exist for all positive times. In the inviscid case, we first prove the well-posedness result in endpoint Besov spaces, which can be embedded into the set of Lipschitzian functions. Continuation criterions and estimates for the lifespan are both established.If we suppose the initial data to be in the borderline Besov spaces with infinite Lebesgue exponent and to be of finite energy, we also have a local existence result. In dimension two, the lifespan goes to infinity when the density tends to a positive constant. Estimates for products and commutators, together with a priori estimates for the parabolic equations and the Stokes (or Euler) system with variable coefficients, are postponed in the appendix. En 1979, Trotman a démontré que les stratifications réelles lisses qui satisfont la condition de (a)-régularité sont précisément celles pour lesquelles la transversalité aux strates des applications est une condition stable dans la topologie forte. C'était un résultat surprenant puisque la (t)-régularité semblait être plus appropriée pour la stabilité de la transversalité, une erreur qui a été faite dans plusieurs articles avant que ce résultat soit montré par Trotman. Notre premier résultat est un analogue au résultat de Trotman pour la topologie faible.Il y a une dizaine d'années Trotman a demandé si le même résultat est valable pour les stratifications analytiques complexes. Dans ce travail on démontre un analogue du résultat de Trotman dans le cas complexe, en utilisant la notion de variété de Oka introduite par Forstneric et on montre que la conjecture n'est pas vraie en général en donnant des contre-exemples.Dans sa thèse, Trotman a formulé une conjecture pour généraliser son résultat pour les stratifications (a_f)-régulières de Thom. Dans une tentative de résolution de cette conjecture on a observé que la transversalité par rapport à un feuilletage est une condition stable, cependant ce n'est pas une condition générique. Donc, en voulant imiter la preuve de Trotman on ne pourra pas obtenir cette généralisation. Néanmoins, on donne ici une preuve de cette conjecture. Ce résultat peut être résumé en disant que les (a_f)-défauts dans une stratification peuvent être détectés en perturbant les applications transverses au feuilletage induit par f. Certaines techniques pour détecter (a_f)-défauts sont aussi données vers la fin. / Trotman in 1979 proved that real smooth stratifications which satisfy the condition of $(a)$-regularity are precisely those stratifications for which transversality to the strata of smooth mappings is a stable condition in the strong topology. This was a surprising result since $(t)$-regularity seemed to be more appropriate for stability of transversality, a mistake that was made in several articles before this result of Trotman. Our first result is an analogue of this result of Trotman for the weak topology.Trotman asked more than ten years ago whether a similar result holds for complex analytic stratifications. We will give an analogue of Trotman's result in the complex setting using Forstneriv c's notion of Oka manifolds and show that the result is not true in general by giving counterexamples.In his Ph.D. thesis Trotman conjectured a generalization of his result for Thom $(a_f)$-regular stratifications. In an attempt to prove this conjecture we noticed that while transversality to a foliation is a stable condition, it is not generic in general. Thus, mimicking the proof of the result of Trotman would not suffice to obtain this generalization. Nevertheless, we will present a proof of this conjecture in this work. This result can be summarized by saying that Thom $(a_f)$-faults in a stratification can be detected by perturbation of maps transverse to the foliation induced by $f$. Some other techniques of detecting $(a_f)$-faults are also given towards the end.
