No. of bitstreams: 1 Fabio Mendia.pdf: 6392530 bytes, checksum: 6077624ba89a84a25312bf15c0c71cd1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-04-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The purpose of the present research is to develop a hermeneutical process to better understand Fernando Pessoa’s Rosicrucian hued esoteric thought, within the cultural horizon of each reader, through Pessoa’s notes and the sense of the esoteric experience expressed in his poems. Its main objectives are to contribute to the understanding of Pessoa’s work and to the expansion of Western Esotericism field of research in Brazilian academy. The process adds to the rational analysis of the text the emotional experience of the poems, and is based upon Gadamer’s phenomenological hermeneutic, the imaginary, contemplative practices of several esoteric, mystical and traditional religious currents, and utilizes an adaptation of Alfonso López Quintás “Lúdico Ambital” method. The work is presented in six chapters, starting with a discussion on Western Esotericism’s definition and a brief history of its sources and main currents up to nowadays. It follows with an introduction on phenomenological hermeneutics and a discussion on religious expression, the imaginary, the “imaginal world”, and the ways religious experiences can be expressed. It includes a brief presentation of Fernando Pessoa’s life and thought, particularly his notes on esotericism, and selects 31 poems to illustrate the study. It develops and applies a hermeneutical method to interpret these poems, followed by an appendix in which the method is exemplified through fictional characters.

The aim of this research is to analyze Thelema of Aleister Crowley. Taking as a starting point the book Magick Without Tears. It is hypothesized that, based in Aleister Crowley’s experience with Western Esoteric philosophies, and in function of his christian education, his conception and structuring of dogmas and doctrines present considerable Judeo-Christian bias that may not have been discarded but reconstructed and reread. In this way, the research will focus on performing a genealogical investigation on the readings and symbols worked on by Aleister Crowley. As a theoretical reference, Wouter J. Hanegraaff and his methodology called History of ideas are adopted. Through this paradigm, we intend to identify and analyze points of dialogue between elements of the corpus of Thelema and the various esoteric influences with which the author worked, and which are found in the chosen book. In addition, it attempts to explain how it unfolds in a body of practices called Magick, resulting in what Crowley defined as Scientific Enlightenment. Culminating thus, in the answer to the question: Is Thelema a Religion?.

Esoterismo, modernidade e seculariza??o: a Gnose de Samael Aun Weor

Campos, Marcelo Leandro de 02 December 2015 (has links)

Contributing to the interdisciplinary debate that articulates the field of Cultural History, History of Religions and the recent History of Western Esotericism, it is intended to analyze the reversing relations and mutual influences that guide the construction of the modern Western culture, its rationality paradigms and empirical science; and on the other hand, the establishment of an esoteric tradition that seeks to harmonize these paradigms with a design strongly "enchanted" of the universe, and the mutual process of appropriation/ reinterpretation involved. This debate also dialogues to a more specific discussion in the field of Science of Religions, which seeks to understand the changes occurring in Western religious field opposite the new secularized society. Specifically, this paper seeks to contribute to the debate by offering a perspective of these processes from its Latin American component in order to identify how these dynamics are reproduced on the continent and its specificities. With this purpose, taking the work of Samael Aun Weor as a case study, it was conducted a long-term historical context by inserting the author in a more general constitution process of modern Western esotericism, and specifically, in the constitution process of an esoteric spiritualities field in Colombia, birth cradle of the Gnostic Movement. From a historical-comparative analysis of his work evolution, its institutionalization and practices - which takes into account conceptual and methodological contributions of Italian History of Religions School, historiography on Western esotericism and theoretical proposition Bourdieu from the concept of "field" - the work highlights the doctrinal transition that the Colombian esoteric Aun Weor operates in his work, moving from Rosicrucianism towards the conceptions of a psychological esotericism, proposed by the Russian esoteric Gurdjieff. Such a transition is analyzed by the dominant imagery in the esoteric milieu of his time, a perspective that offers an important analytical material for understanding the structural dynamics that guide the institutionalization of Gnosticism in Latin America and the specifics that guide their reversing relations with the social universe in which they are inserted.

The Home of Truth: The Metaphysical World of Marie Ogden

Thayne, Stanley J. 24 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Marie Ogden's Home of Truth colony—a religious community that was located in southern Utah during the 1930s and 40s—was part of a segment of the American religious landscape that has largely been overlooked. As such, her movement points to a significant gap in the historiography of American religion. In addition to documenting the history of this obscure community, I situate Marie Ogden as part of what I call the early new age of American religion, an underdeveloped part of the broader categories of metaphysical religion or Western esotericism. This thesis also points to several other overlooked figures from the same era, suggesting several avenues for further study.

The veil of Egypt : the constitution of the individual and the afterlife in Ancient Egypt as portrayed in The Secret Doctrine of H.P. Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society

Bester, Dewald 11 1900 (has links)
The Secret Doctrine is the magnum opus of H.P. Blavatsky and one of the foundation texts of the Theosophical Society. It represents her attempt to appropriate authority in a wide variety of fields, including, science, religion, and philosophy. This study examines H.P. Blavatsky’s engagement with Ancient Egypt in relation to two specific themes, the constitution of the individual and the afterlife, as they are portrayed in this work. It locates Theosophy in its historical context, the late nineteenth century, in relation to various fields of knowledge. It reviews the sources that H.P. Blavatsky drew on in her work and discusses the various interpretive techniques she employed to insert Theosophical content into various world religions. Finally, it contrasts the Theosophical presentation of Ancient Egypt in The Secret Doctrine with that of mainstream modern Egyptology. The fundamental disconnect which is revealed highlights the challenges that the Theosophical perspective faces. / Religious Studies & Arabic / M. A. (Religious Studies)

Bentelid, Dina, Tellqvist, Olle January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to situate the locus of the Swedish branch of freemasonry, Svenska Frimurare Orden, in the contemporary religious landscape. The research questions are as follows: On what grounds can the Swedish branch of freemasonry be considered religious? If the Swedish branch of freemasonry is considered religious, how does it fit into the contemporary society among the plethora of new religious movements? In regard to the first question, a definition of religion is required, thus Bruce Lincoln’s theory with four domains of religion is used to decide to what extent the Swedish branch of freemasonry can be described as a religion or a religious movement. To be able to answer the second research question the four sociological narratives as presented by Meredith B. McGuire are used to analyze the results of our study.   The results are reached through examination of the common laws of the Swedish branch of freemasonry and the data found on their official website, combined with hermeneutic interpretation. Our conclusion is that the Swedish branch of freemasonry through its explicit connection to Christianity, in addition to its esoteric and occult practices both fits into a historical continuity regarding religion in Sweden, as well as with contemporary societal currents regarding new religious movements.

The potential contribution of psychosynthesis to education : an interview-based exploration of educators' experiences of working with members of the 'New Generations' who are developing towards self-actualisation and self-transcendence

Trotta, Patrizia January 2012 (has links)
The intention behind this research was to reveal through two interpretive, inter-related studies the perceived needs of differently-labelled youth, collectively addressed in this thesis as ‘the New Generations’, exploring potentially viable ways of working with them in education. The first study focused on youth labelled Indigos, and the second study focused on exploring a possible way of working with the New Generations according to experienced teachers. Both studies drew on lived experience and opinions of educators who have acquired extensive experience respectively with the Indigo phenomenon and with the psychosynthetic educational model. The first study’s results revealed not only Indigos’ self-actualising and self-transcending characteristics and needs, but also indicated that holistic approaches to education appeared to have been successful with them. A further analysis of characteristics observed by special education experts indicated that differently-labelled youth also appear to be motivated by self-actualising and self-transcending tendencies, which highlighted the relevance of investigating holistic models for potential integration in mainstream education. Psychosynthesis was chosen for investigation in the second study, in that besides addressing self-actualising/transcending needs, it also integrates them within the psyche. The study explored how recent psychosynthesis-based educational projects might inform, and contribute to, holistic and mainstream education. Some innovative potential contributions to both holistic and mainstream education were found. Recent research on current tendencies, educational futures and global trends affecting a changing world would appear to emphasise the relevance of the contributions offered by the psychosynthesis model, hence to suggest the potential appropriateness of their fuller integration in mainstream education. However, an examination of study results and of the relevant literature on practices seems to indicate a tendency to transmit knowledge from past to future generations, irrespective of possibly changed needs, in both mainstream and holistic education. It is suggested that this potentially biased way of educating youth might need to be addressed on both fronts.
