Die emosionele belewing van graad 7 leerders in 'n bendegeteisterde gebiedJeffries, Victor Vincent 11 1900 (has links)
Summaries in Afrikaans and Engish / The aim of this research was to explore the emotional experience of grade 7 learners in a
gang afflicted area. The researcher further investigated how the learners experience this
gang violence and how they give meaning to it The researcher also examined the
possible ways in which the educational psychologist could assist these learners in
actualising their full potential.
A literature study of relevant sources has been undertaken to establish the theoretical
context of the gang related problem. Two groups of 8 grade 7 learners were used as
respondents in the empirical study. The qualitative research method has been used and
the researcher made use of focus groups and interviews as measuring instruments.
The results of the empirical study have shown that learners experience gang violence
negatively when they are exposed to it on a regular basis and that it impacts negatively on
their performance at school.
skoolwerk impakteer. / Psychology of Education / M.Ed. (Specialisation in Guidance and Counselling)

The relationship between a disadvantaged home environment and the self-concept of children : a guidance and counselling perspectiveMagano, Meahabo Dinah 06 1900 (has links)
The escalating figures of unemployment and poverty in South Africa are posing a threat to the nuclear family. The deteriorating conditions in the home environment, particularly regarding material provision, has led to an increase in disadvantaged home environments. The investigation in this study focused mainly on the self-concepts of adolescents from disadvantaged home environments. The aim of the research was to see how the home environment influences the self-concept of an adolescent in disadvantaged areas.
The literature study showed that factors such as unemployment, poverty, low socio-economic background, single parenthood, absent parents, parents' level of literacy and parenting styles were associated with disadvantaged home environments. With regard to the self-concept the researcher probed the physical, emotional, social, academic and general self-concepts.
An empirical investigation was undertaken regarding grade 9 and 11 learners in Hebron in the North West Province. A structured questionnaire was developed focusing on home environment and self-concept.
By using Pearson's correlation, ANOVA and Tukey's t-test, findings indicated that there is a significant relationship between home environment and the self-concept. The adolescent's emotional self-concept is affected by religion, supervision at home (parent or guardian) and the number of siblings in the family. Moreover, girls had a better social self-concept than boys. On the whole the physical, academic, social and general self-concepts were not affected by religion, number of siblings in the family and different kinds of supervision. With regard to the physical self-concept it was found that it differed with age.
Therefore, the educators who facilitate Life Orientation in the General Education and Training (GET) band and Life Skills in the Further Education and Training (FET) band should assist children who come from disadvantaged home environments by applying intervention strategies suggested by the researcher in this study to foster positive self-concepts in adolescents. Positive self-concepts are key factors for successful learning, general behavioural patterns and high participation in school activities. Upgrading of educators is also recommended so that they are fully equipped to assist a learner who is from a deprived home environment. / Educational Studies / D.Ed.(Psychology of Education))

Participatory research in organisational change with social work supervisionLekalakala, Esther Kgauhelo 11 1900 (has links)
The dissertation presents a participatory research process in organisational change with social
work supervision. The study was conducted with a group of social work supervisors employed by
the Department of Health and Welfare in the Central region of the Northern Province from
September 1997 to November 1998. The participatory research process engaged the participants
in a consciousness-raising and educational process. They were enabled to identify problems
which rendered them ineffective, brought about by the socio-political transformation process in
South Africa since 1994, and were strengthened as a collaborative group to work together to
bring about change in their situation. Going through the process of dialogue as a group, the
participants became empowered and more confident to do participatory supervision, which in tum
would empower the supervisees as direct service providers. / Health Studies / M.A. (Social Science (Mental Health))

Adolessente seuns se ervaring van die dood van ‘n ouer en ondersteuning binne die skoolopset, Wes-Kaap / Adolescent boys’ experiences of the death of a parent and the support within the school environment, Western CapeKock, Jennobia Ezendel 02 1900 (has links)
Afrikaans text / This study was undertaken to investigate and explore the experience of the death of a parent and the support for Coloured boys, in the middleadolescence phase, within the school context. Five boys were involved in the study. The gender of the parent was not specified; but all the boys had lost their mothers. The adolescent boys indicated that the death of their mothers was a life changing event; that they struggled emotionally after the death of their mothers but they received enough support from the school, friends and peer group. Family relations were disrupted and the boys often handled their mourning alone. They indicated a continued bond with their mothers, developed a greater sense of responsibility and insight into themselves and the emotions of others deepened. The boys stressed the value of social support but the public display of emotions is influenced by their perceptions of masculinity. / Die studie is onderneem om Kleurling seuns in die middel-adolessente fase se ervaring na die dood van ’n ouer en ondersteuning binne die skoolopset te ondersoek en te verken. Vyf seuns is by die studie betrek. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. The Welbedacht East parents’/ primary caregivers’ perceptions and practices of ‘good enough’ parenting and the development of a locally specific parenting support interventionPetty, Ann 11 1900 (has links)
Intensifying interventions to improve the quality of care that children receive from parents/
primary caregivers is mandated by several strategic objectives, such as the National Plan
of Action for Children 2012-2017 (South Africa 2012), the White Paper on Families in South
Africa (2013), and the Children’s Amendment Act 41 of 2007 (South Africa 2007). Parenting
programmes remain popular parenting interventions (Daly, Bray, Bruckauf, Byrne,
Margaria, Pecnik & Samms-Vaughan 2015:18; Richter & Naicker 2013:9) reporting
outcomes of enhanced parent-child relationships, improved behaviour of children, and
reduced parental stress. There is a concern that parenting programmes offered in South
Africa lack evidence of their efficacy (Wessels 2012:9) and cultural and contextual
relevance for the recipients (Begle, Lopez, Cappa, Dumas & de Arellano 2012:56; Richter
& Naicker 2013:1). The study developed a locally specific parenting support intervention for
parents/ primary caregivers living in the low-cost housing development of Welbedacht East
using the Intervention Development Design model. Parents/ primary caregivers were
involved throughout the study, contributing to the intervention’s applicability, as well as its
contextual and cultural relevance. Bioecological and social inclusion theories framed the
study.
A qualitative research approach supported by an exploratory, descriptive and contextual
design was used. Two purposive samples (parents/ primary caregivers and community
champions) were recruited. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the data.
Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke 2006) produced the findings that were presented at a
consultation workshop attended by research participants and relevant stakeholders where
the parameters of the intervention were determined. These were subsequently developed
into the elements and intervention protocols by four indigenous community experts following
the Delphi process. Lincoln and Guba’s (1985) approach to trustworthiness as presented
by Porter (2007:85) and Thomas and Magilvy (2011:152) was used. Cultural competence
was maintained throughout and ethical considerations were observed to circumvent harm
to participants and uphold the integrity of the research process.
The perceptions of the parents/ primary caregivers were consistent with scholarly indicators
of ‘good enough’ parenting, but the contextual stressors they experienced challenges their
ability to fulfil some of these indicators. An intervention was needed to increase parental
capacity to improve parent-child relationships, cultivate life skills for improved psychological health, and advance the financial independence of parents.
It was concluded that a parenting programme on its own would fail to address the most
pressing needs of parents/ primary caregivers living in disadvantaged circumstances and
custom-made parenting support interventions were needed to increase parental capacity to manage the structural challenges that compromised parenting, such as socioeconomic
interventions of a social developmental nature. / Social Work / D. Phil. (Social Work)

Exploring the feasibility of foster care as a primary permanency option for orphansThiele, Shelley 08 1900 (has links)
In the wake of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, welfare organisations in Vryheid situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal have noted dramatic increases in requests for foster care placements for orphaned children. In many instances, orphans have lived by private arrangement with extended families for several years. However, families are increasingly overwhelmed with the burden of overextending scarce resources, forcing them to seek welfare assistance.
Community-based responses to the crisis are regarded as top priority. This study examines literature regarding child care alternatives for orphans, focussing on foster care as the primary option. A study was conducted which explored community perceptions towards the local orphan crisis and foster care in particular. Findings revealed that although the adage 'Blood is thicker than water' still applies, foster care cannot stand alone. Alternate forms of care-giving need to be found to avoid plunging orphan care into further crisis. / Social work / M.A.(Social Science (Mental Health))

Tsoga O Itirele : a reflection on a participatory action research processNtsoane, Dikeledi Regina 01 1900 (has links)
The report is about participatory action research with caregivers at the 'Tsoga 0 ltirele" centre for the mentally disabled. It was a process where the caregivers were involved in a series of action, plan and reflection in researching their situation. The facilitation process assisted the caregivers to look at their problems at the centre
and improve service delivery in caring for the mentally disabled children. Several meetings were held where action, plan and reflection took place. Caregivers decided on their own when to meet and discuss issues that concerned them. They planned what needed to be dealt with and took collective action to address these needs.
The facilitation process enabled caregivers to research their own problems, embrace errors experienced and recognise progress. People Centred Approach, Community Development and Participatory Action Research complemented one another in capacitating caregivers. Through it they learned to improve their own programmes and to run their meetings, improve marketing skills and fundraising. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science (Mental Health))

Constructing a psychological framework for enhancing relational attitudes and behaviour in the South African employment relations contextKirsten, Monica 04 1900 (has links)
Text in English, abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / This research endeavoured to construct a psychological framework for enhancing relational attitudes and behaviour in a South African employment relations context by investigating the relationship dynamics between individuals’ work-related perceptions (perceived organisational support and justice) and work experiences (psychological contract violation) and their relational attitudes (organisational and union commitment) and behaviour (organisational citizenship behaviour and counterproductive work behaviour) in the workplace, as moderated by their personal dispositions (individualism/collectivism) and mediated by organisational cynicism and trust. The associations between individuals’ personal (gender, age, population group and education level) and work-related (employment status, tenure, job level and union membership) characteristics and these dispositional and relational variables were also explored. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted on a purposive sample of employed students registered at a higher education institution (n = 740). Canonical correlation analysis revealed that individuals’ work-related perceptions and work experiences as well as their sense of organisational cynicism and trust were strong predictors of their attitudinal commitment towards their organisations and their organisationally directed organisational citizenship behaviour. Structural equation modelling indicated a good fit between employees’ perceptions of the quality of their social exchange relationship with their employing organisations and their trust in and cynicism towards these organisations as antecedents of relational attitudes and behaviour. Mediation analysis indicated that individuals’ work-related perceptions and work experiences influence their attitudinal commitment to their employing organisations through their sense of organisational cynicism and trust. Moderation analysis revealed that the influence of individuals’ cynicism towards their employing organisations on their attitudinal commitment is conditional upon their level of horizontal collectivism. Multiple regression analysis showed that individuals’ gender, population group, level of education and job level explain their attitudinal and behavioural reactions to work-related perceptions and work experiences. Tests for significant mean differences revealed significant differences in terms of the biographical variables. At a theoretical level, the study extended the understanding of relational attitudes and behaviour and the antecedents thereof in the workplace. At an empirical level, the study delivered an empirically tested psychological framework for enhancing relational attitudes and behaviour. At a practical level, individual and organisational interventions in terms of the psychological framework were recommended. / Lolu cwaningo luzama ukwakha uhlaka lwezengqondo lokukhulisa indlela enhle yokucabanga nokuziphatha kumqondosizinda wezindlela zokusebenza eNingizimu Afrika ngokucubungula izinguquko ebudlelwaneni phakathi kwemibono emayelana nemisebenzi yomuntu ngamunye (ukusekela nobulungiswa kwenhlangano okucatshangelwayo) nababhekana nakho emsebenzini (ukungahlonishwa kwesivumelwano sezengqondo) nendlela yabo yokucabanga (ukuzibophezela kwenhlangano nokubumbana) nendlela yokuziphatha (indlela yokuziphatha ngokobuzwe benhlangano nendlela yokuziphatha engavumelani nokwenziwa ngemfanelo komsebenzi) emsebenzini njengoba kujivazwa yindlela bona ngokwabo abaziphethe ngayo (ngokuzimela/ngokusebenzisana) futhi kugqugquzelwa ukungabaza nokungabinethemba enhlanganweni.
