Fardos e fardões: mulheres na Academia Brasileira de Letras (1897-2003) / Burdens and robes: women in the Brazilian Academy of Letters (1897-2003)

Fanini, Michele Asmar 29 May 2009 (has links)
From some studies about the Brazilian Academy of Letters an institute established in Rio de Janeiro in 1897 , we can see an image that is widespread but not questioned, i.e., that of a space that tends to be visibly male chauvinist. Although the association of the Brazilian Academy and the male domination may seem to be simplistic, there is in it, in fact, a series of sociological implications that must be scrutinized and questioned. Thus, taking a theoretical and analytical approach vis-à-vis the gender, the aim of this study is to capture the nuances that such an association veils. Therefore, our starting point, which takes into consideration the absence of some documents, will be the period of consolidation of the ABL, when the name of a woman is considered to emerge among its founding members. This woman was the writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida, who immediately afterwards saw herself excluded from the final list of members. Also we will dedicate special attention to 1930, year in which the writer Amélia Beviláqua proposed her candidacy to the ABL and got a sound no as a reply. Besides these occurrences, which represent a true institutional emptiness, we will seek to elucidate the changes that took place in the House of Machado de Assis throughout the years, having as a turning point the year 1976, period in which women eligibility was approved. We will see that such an alteration has been followed, until now, by a rare presence of women, more specifically, by the admission of six writers: Rachel de Queiroz, Dinah Silveira de Queiroz, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Nélida Piñon, Zélia Gattai and Ana Maria Machado. From the resulting frame, we will find out whether the changes made in its statute in 1976 were, finally, indicative of a shift in the traditional and conservative structure of ABL or whether the circumstances and motivation that oriented the attainment of prestige and, consequently, a chair in the Brazilian Academy of Letters was the result of social forces which ratify the literary canon.

Ragged Edges in the Fractured Future: A Co‐Authored Organizational Autoethnography

Herrmann, Andrew F., Barnhill, Julia A., Poole, Mary Catherine Catherine 19 April 2013 (has links)
Purpose: This article aims to represent three ethnographers researching an organizational event within academia: the Second International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry. It explores the divergent viewpoints of their ethnographic experiences as well as reflecting upon their relationships with each other as they attempted to understand each others’ viewpoints. Design/methodology/approach: This ethnographic project involved participant observation, full participation, and narrative interviews. However, as the project continued, it evolved to reflexively examining the authors’ own viewpoints and relationships challenges. Findings: This paper contributes to understanding ethnographic research of organizational events in several ways. First, it is an exemplar of how three ethnographers examining the same organizational event view it through differing lenses. Secondly, it shows how the authors worked together through the research, struggling to understand each others’ varied political and personal lenses through dialogue. Research limitations/implications: The research examined only one organizational event, therefore the findings are specific to this site and the same results may not necessarily be found in other organizations. Originality/value: This paper is unique in that three ethnographers from different generations and different political worldviews can come together for the purposes of research, examine an organizational event and learn to cooperate with and appreciate each others’ viewpoints.

The Role of Gender in Hiring Officials' Perceptions of Chief Information Officer Candidates

Van Ness, Shanna 01 January 2017 (has links)
Few women in academia occupy the leadership role of chief information officer (CIO), yet little is known about the underlying causes for gender disparity in this role. The purpose of this causal comparative study was to investigate whether gender stereotypes may impact perceptions about managerial characteristics of CIO candidates in academic settings. The theoretical foundation for this study was Schein's 'Think Manager, Think Male' paradigm and Acker's gendered organization theory. Data were acquired from 48 hiring officials from four-year public, private, and nonprofit colleges, universities, and research institutions in the Northeastern region of the United States who completed the Schein Descriptive Index. Data were analyzed using ANOVA to determine whether gender of the hiring authority was associated with the perceived managerial skills of male, female, and non-gender-specific CIO candidates. Data analysis revealed no significant difference in male and female hiring officials' ratings of male, female, and non-gender-specific CIO candidates. The findings demonstrated the theoretical construct of Schein's 'Think Manager, Think Male' paradigm are outdated and Acker's gendered organization theory persistently exists where males' dominant in organizations and roles deemed masculine. Implications for positive social change in the area of public policy are increasing awareness to hiring officials and women seeking the role of CIO in academia about other factors such as age, ethnicity, and experience that may affect candidate selection in the role of CIO.

Learning in Collaboration : Academics’ experiences in collaborative partnerships

Karlsson, Jan January 2008 (has links)
There is an ongoing debate both in the United States and Europe about the need to develop a broader view of scholarship and the different activities connected with it, including “service to the community”. In Sweden, service takes the form of practice-oriented engagement and collaboration with the surrounding community, as stipulated by Swedish law regulating universities’ activities. Collaboration is frequently perceived as a supplementary task, in addition to education and research, hence the name ‘the third task’. Many academics, university teachers and researchers, are today involved in different collaborative partnerships. This thesis focuses academics’ learning in two different contexts: collaboration with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and in a multidisciplinary research programme at the National Institute for Working Life in Sweden (NIWL). The results of the first investigation reveal that the academics learn different strategies to instigate, accomplish, deepen and further develop collaboration between universities and SMEs. The results also show also that academic professionals engaged in this type of activity need to handle the rigid structures of the academic organisation, which neither encourage nor reward these individuals’ efforts to collaborate. However, this study shows that although academics and practioners from SMEs come from different working cultures with their various traditions associated with language and interaction, a continuous exchange and dialogue creates trust and competence for all parties, as well as learning in the form of new knowledge that is useful for both the academia and SMEs. Collaboration across disciplines is rapidly becoming an integral feature of research, due to the desire to explore problems and questions that are not confined to a single discipline and the need to solve societal problems. The second empirical investigation focuses on the workplace learning of researchers in a multidisciplinary research (MDR) programme at the National Institute for Working Life in Sweden (NIWL), and their collaboration with practitioners. The results show that academics in this multidisciplinary context reach a deepened awareness of the perspectives of their own and others’ fields of research, as well as a heightened curiosity to learn more. The learning also involves gaining new insights about their own learning and how this takes place; its impact on their own professional development, and discovering, sometimes surprisingly, how their competence can be used in new areas of research. The interaction of knowledge and experience with researchers of different disciplines and practitioners creates a context that demands a different type of learning for the academics, compared to working in their own disciplines. Both investigations give an understanding of how academics experience their learning in collaboration with practitioners and researchers from different disciplines. It shows how the holistic integration of knowledge deriving from the academic functions of collaboration, teaching and research contributes to development within the academia and in working environments outside it.

Generalized harassment in Canadian universities: policies and practices addressing bullying in the academic workplace

Brisebois, Justine 08 September 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the implications of anti-harassment policies at Canadian medical-doctoral universities. The problem of generalized harassment as a phenomenon of academic bullying is identified and defined. This thesis explores how anti-harassment policies and practices of Canadian medical-doctoral universities have come to be, as well as their implications for academics. Chapter one identifies the methodology of the thesis, a comparative policy analysis of the policies and practices of Canada's medical-doctoral universities. Chapter two describes the theoretical foundations used in the thesis: theories of academic organizational control, policy formation, problem representation, and manifest and latent functions. Chapter three reviews contemporary literature on the role of universities in society and the phenomenon of generalized harassment in academia. Chapter four reports the results of a comparative analysis of the anti-harassment policies and practices of Canada's medical-doctoral universities, which reveal three approaches to anti-harassment policy. Chapter five links the theoretical to the empirical in order to better understand the phenomenon of generalized harassment in Canadian medical-doctoral universities, and the implications policies and practices have for the future of collegiality.

Using a system dynamic approach to understanding the socialisation process of IT graduates

Tjikongo, Ricardo January 2013 (has links)
This study analyses the process that an IT refurbishing organisation used to socialise 15 IT graduates to the norms of the working world. In addition, 5 IT industry and 2 governmental agency interviews were used, and 60 online job advertisements were analysed to develop a System Dynamic model. The main motivation for this study was to develop a system dynamics model of the graduate socialisation process, in an attempt to understand the cause and effect of practical exposure, to bridge the IT skill-expectations gap. The main source of data for the model was from a-priori coding and content analysis of job adverts, online blogs and reports created by the students, supported by a review of the existing literature. System dynamics modelling and simulation uses computer generated software to test the behaviour of real world cross discipline problems over time (Sterman 2000). System dynamic studies have been conducted in project management, education, engineering, geography, sustainable fuel development and agriculture, etcetera. System dynamics is a flexible approach, as it uses both qualitative and quantitative data to model and address a problem situation, gathering data from intellectual and observation experiences, as well as written and verbal databases. This research advises on the successful integration of IT graduates into industry by identifying the relevant casual relationships. It recognises that graduates are genuinely interested in a career in IT, despite initial difficulties of adapting to a new career. The study was further strengthened by showing that organisational and governmental requirements vary and that they occasionally recruit based on these varying requirements. Primary and secondary data was combined to model a casual loop diagram as well as a stock and flow diagram, which could benefit curriculum advisors in academia, professors, human resource managers in industry and most importantly recently graduated IT graduates. / Magister Commercii - MCom

This study aims to present methodologies developed for the determination of hydrolysable tannin content of antioxidant compounds and content of total amino acids in honey, coffee and health supplements, in that order, using diffuse reflectance near infrared and analysis images as analytical techniques. The reflectométricos methods are based on classical reactions described in the literature conducted using filter paper as barriers hydrophobic solid support. The method for the determination of antioxidant compounds in coffee samples was constructed from measurements NIR spectrophotometer, applying chemometric models for quantification. For the determination of total amino acids in health supplements, the determination was carried out using two techniques: diffuse reflectance and analysis of images, the first followed the same procedure as the other reflectometric methods and the second was based on analysis of photographs taken from a mobile device with automatic flash, by using the ImageJ software for obtaining absorbance data. For all the methods developed experimental design for the optimization of the variables were performed. Determination of hydrolyzable tannins in honey samples was performed by reaction between the analyte (hydrolyzable tannin) and KIO3 chromogenic reagent (potassium iodate), among acetate buffer (pH 4.75) in barrier filter paper hydrophobic, forming a colorful measurable product by diffuse reflectance at 525 nm. The experimental design provided as great volume for each reagent 10 L and concentrations optimized 3.1 x 104 mg L-1 KIO3 and pH 4.75. The Limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were obtained respectively 12,2 and 40,8 mg L-1. The determination of antioxidant compounds in coffee was performed by quantification of phenolic and flavonoids, as well as direct determination of total antioxidant capacity using infrared spectra close (NIR) to build chemometric models capable of predicting the behavior of each variable within of the system. The models developed were compared with actual concentration values obtained by applying a comparative spectrophotometric method for each composition. The main advantage of the use of techniques such as NIR applying chemometrics is the need for treatment steps of the samples and also because it is a non-invasive technique, preserving the final integrity of the sample. Good results were obtained for the separation of samples through chemometric models using PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and quantification of analytes through PLS (Partial Least Squares) models. The method for the determination of amino acid content in samples of gymnasium supplements was shown to be rapid for the determination through the use of the reaction between the analytes (amino acids) and the chromogenic reagent ninhydrin. Two methodologies were used for the determination: diffuse reflectance associated with spot test with hydrophobic barriers and image analysis, in both cases, a color product (Ruhmann purple) measured at 570 nm. The digital image analysis method presented higher sensitivity, but this is not an important parameter for the comparison of methodologies, in this case, since the amino acid content in the samples analyzed was high. The use of the hydrophobic barriers allowed the obtaining of a more homogeneous final product with low values of deviations in the triplicates, increasing the sensitivity when compared with determinations by diffuse reflectance in the absence of the barriers. The results obtained were satisfactory for the two methods developed and in relation to the final residues, all four methods developed in the course of the work presented negligible residue formation values. / CNPq: 140980/2013-0

For that purpose, I basically examined its members’s written statements and its meetings’ minutes, which are in Plínio Doyle’s personal archives at Arquivo-Museu de Literatura Brasileira-AMLB, a department of Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa-FCRB. The present text shows that personal archives are important research resources, especially when, as it is the case of the sabadoyle group, there is a lack of secondary sources.
