Application Of ¹⁴C Wiggle-Matching To Support Dendrochronological Analysis In Japan

Nakamura, T., Okuno, M., Kimura, K., Mitsutani, T., Moriwaki, H., Ishizuka, Y., Kim, K. H., Jing, B. L., Minami, M., Takada, H., Oda, H. 06 1900 (has links)
¹⁴C wiggle-matching was applied to two wood samples closely related to geological and archaeological events with associated dendrochronological dates, to demonstrate the accuracy of ¹⁴C dating with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Wiggle-matching on charred wood with bark, excavated from a pyroclastic mud-flow deposited by the huge 10th Century eruption of the Baitoushan Volcano, revealed the eruption age as cal A.D. 935 +8/-5 with 95% confidence. This date is consistent with the eruption age of A.D. 912 to A.D. 972 estimated by dendrochronology on two wooden boards that had clear stratigraphical connections to the B-Tm tephra deposit in Japan, an ash fall layer formed by the eruption of the Baitoushan Volcano. The date is also consistent with an A.D. 937–938 date estimated by the analysis of varved sediments from Lake Ogawarako in Aomori prefecture. The other wooden board collected from the Mawaki archaeological site in Ishikawa prefecture was wiggle-matched as 783 +13/-11 cal B.C. with 95% confidence, which is consistent with the dates of 830 cal B.C. to 759 cal B.C. obtained for seven wooden poles from the same wooden structures as the wooden board. These results are highly encouraging for obtaining accurate dates on wood when dendrochronology cannot be used.

Détermination de la concentration des radionucléides à vie longue 129I, 41Ca et 10 Be par spectrométrie de masse par accélérateur dans les résines usées de l'industrie nucléaire / Determination of long-lived radionuclides (129I, 41Ca, 10Be) concentrations by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry in spent resins from the nuclear industry

Nottoli-Lepage, Emmanuelle 19 September 2013 (has links)
Determining the concentration of Long-Lived RadioNuclides (LLRN) in nuclear waste is fundamental for the long term management of storage sites. This study focuses on the determination of three LLRN concentrations, i.e. 129I, 41Ca and 10Be, in ion exchange resins used for primary fluid purification in Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR). To benefit from the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) technique allowing to measure extremely low levels of nuclide concentrations, analytical procedures including: 1) sample dissolution; 2) selective and quantitative extraction of the analyte; and, 3) analyte conditioning for AMS measurements, were developed. Applied on spent resin samples collected at a 900 MW PWR, the procedures developed for each studied LLRN allowed their quantitative recovery and their selective extraction from β-γ emitters and isobars. The concentration measurements of the LLRN of interest were then performed on the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry national facility ASTER housed by the Centre Européen de Recherche et d'Enseignement des Géosciences de l'Environnement (CEREGE, Aix-en-Provence). 129I, 41Ca and 10Be concentrations in spent resins were measured to be about 10 ng/g, 20 pg/g and 4 ng/g of dry resin, respectively. Considering 129I and 41Ca, the measured concentrations agree with those assessed from scaling factors established relatively to easily measured gamma emitters (137Cs and 60Co). For 10Be, the presented results are significantly different from expected values but are in agreement with previous ICP-MS results.

[en] ESSAYS ON MONETARY POLICY AND BUSINESS CYCLES UNDER MARKET IMPERFECTIONS / [pt] ENSAIOS SOBRE POLÍTICA MONETÁRIA E FLUTUAÇÕES ECONÔMICAS NA PRESENÇA DE IMPERFEIÇÕES DE MERCADO

MARCO ANTONIO FREITAS DE HOLLANDA CAVALCANTI 11 July 2007 (has links)
This thesis consists of three essays on economic fluctuations and monetary policy issues, which are investigated within New- Keynesian monetary general equilibrium models. The first essay analyzes the properties of optimal disinflation policies, seeking to identify conditions under which: (i) the optimal disinflationary path involves significant output losses; (ii) a rapid disinflation is preferable to a gradual one. According to our results, different degrees of monetary frictions and inertia in output or inflation may lead to different optimal disinflationary policies - some of which will be quick and painless, while others will proceed slowly and generate deep recessions. The second essay investigates the relationship between credit market imperfections and the degree of shock amplification arising from the so-called financial accelerator, by simulating a macroeconomic model with two types of financial frictions. According to our results, the power of the financial accelerator may either increase or decrease with financial frictions, depending on the source and initial level of such frictions. The third essay provides an empirical investigation of the relationship between credit market imperfections, shock amplification and macroeconomic volatility, based on socioeconomic data from a panel of 62 countries. According to our results, which are consistent with the theoretical model developed in the second essay, macroeconomic volatility seems to increase with contract enforcement costs, but varies non-monotonically with the degree of anti-creditor bias in the judicial and legal system

La patrimonialisation des objets scientifiques contemporains et leurs contextes de valorisation : cas de l’accélérateur de particules Cockcroft-Walton / « patrimonialisation » of contemporary scientific objects and their contexts of using : the Cockcroft-Walton particule accelerator

Derolez, Séverine 08 December 2016 (has links)
We call it “patrimonialisation” (the making of heritage) according to Information and Communication Sciences. We assume that the value of contemporary scientific objects, an important stage of the patrimonialisation, is specific and requires a particular expertise. Our work was realized thanks to a french financing facility, allowing us to work with Le musée des Confluences in Lyon (France), which exposes a particle accelerator CW in Societies: the human theater. The Institute of Lyon Nuclear physics (IPNL) also possesses a device of this type, who is the focus of a recognition project. sing a multidisciplinary approach, our analysis begin with a study of historical, epistemological, social and scientific context, of the first one CW. We also led two inquiries, the first one to redraw the accelerator CW trajectory in Lyon, the second to find all the accelerators CW in the world. Several studies have indeed highlighted the stages of the patrimonialisation. Relying on these studies we characterized the specificities of the contemporary scientific heritage, and looked for tracks left by these characteristics in the exhibition text (museography). Our results demonstrate the lack of information allowing the interpretation (lecture) and the appropriation of the accelerator CW by a public, and invite us to question the representational contents of the object, conveyed through other contexts of use, formal or fictional

Characterization of γ-rays at MAST

Blom, Erik January 2019 (has links)
The γ-ray characterizing possibility of the neutron collimated flux monitor (in short, Neutron Camera) at the Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is explored. Typically used to monitor neutron emission, the Neutron Camera has excellent neutron/γ-ray discrimination properties and thus presents the opportunity to measure spatially and temporally resolved γ-ray emission - a possibility of an additional fusion diagnostics method with already existing equipment. An Online Data Analysis (ODA) code was used to analyze the data on γ-rays from several plasma discharges with similar plasma parameters. A high statistics temporal distribution of the γ-ray emission and a lower statistics spatial distribution were analyzed. However, the low energy resolution and range for the Neutron Camera γ-ray measurements revealed few conclusive results on the origin of the higher energy γ-rays. Detection systems with higher energy resolution and range are suggested for an extensive analysis of γ-ray emission at MAST Upgrade.

Laser Beam Pathway Design and Evaluation for Dielectric Laser Acceleration

Rasouli, Karwan January 2019 (has links)
After nearly 100 years of particle acceleration, particle accelerator experiments continue providing results within the field of high energy physics. Particle acceleration is used worldwide in practical applications such as radiation therapy and materials science research. Unfortunately, these accelerators are large and expensive. Dielectric Laser Acceleration (DLA) is a promising technique for accelerating particles with high acceleration gradients, without requiring large-scale accelerators. DLA utilizes the electric field of a high energy laser to accelerate electrons in the proximity of a nanostructured dielectric surface. The aim of this project was limited to laser beam routing and imaging techniques for a DLA experiment. The goal was to design the laser beam pathway between the laser and the dielectric sample, and testing a proposed imaging system for aiming the laser. This goal was achieved in a test setup using a low-energy laser. In the main setup including a femtosecond laser, the result indicated lack of focus. For a full experimental setup, a correction of this focus is essential and the beam path would need to be combined with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) as an electron source.

Reações nucleares de alta energia (\" Spallation\") e sua aplicação em cálculo de sistemas nucleares acionados por  Fonte / High energy nuclear reactions (\"Spallation\") and their application in calculation of the acceleration driven systems (ADS)

Rossi, Pedro Carlos Russo 25 February 2011 (has links)
This work presents a study of high energy nuclear reactions which are fundamental to dene the source term in accelerator driven systems. These nuclear reactions, also known as spallation, consist in the interaction of high energetic hadrons with nucleons in the atomic nucleus. The phenomenology of these reactions consist in two step. In the rst, the proton interacts through multiple scattering in a process called intra-nuclear cascade. It is followed by a step in which the excited nucleus, coming from the intranuclear cascade, could either, evaporates particles to achieve a moderate energy state or ssion. This process is known as competition between evaporation and ssion. In this work the main nuclear models, Bertini and Cugnon are reviewed, since these models are fundamental for design purposes of the source term in ADS, due to lack of evaluated nuclear data for these reactions. The implementation and validation of the calculation methods for the design v of the source is carried out to implement the methodology of source design using the program MCNPX (Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended), devoted to calculation of transport of these particles and the validation performed by an international cooperation together with a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) of the International Atomic Energy Agency and available jobs, in order to qualify the calculations on nuclear reactions and the de-excitation channels involved, providing a state of the art of design and methodology for calculating external sources of spallation for source driven systems. The CRISP, is a brazilian code for the phenomenological description of the reactions involved and the models implemented in the code were reviewed and improved to continue the qualication process. Due to failure of the main models in describing the production of light nuclides, the multifragmentation reaction model was studied. Because the discrepancies in the calculations of production of these nuclides are attributes to the lack of reaction channel and the implementation of this channel was carried out for applications in high energy reactions with the CRISP code to reproduce the production of light nuclides, as well, as its validation by comparison with experimental data available for this phenomenon. Thus, obtaining a better reproduction of the whole spectrum of production of nuclides in the process.

Desenvolvimento do sistema de potência elétrica em uma unidade móvel de irradiação por feixe de elétrons para tratamento de águas residuárias e efluentes industriais / Developing an electrical power system of a mobile electron beam accelerator to treatment of industrial wastewaters and effluents

Gaspar, Renato Rache 27 September 2018 (has links)
The treatment of wastewater and industrial effluents by electron beam irradiation is a promising technique, however, not very widespread in Brazilian territory. The design and a construction of a mobile unit containing an electron beam accelerator of 700 KeV and 20kW, by the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN) is innovative to demonstrate the effects and positive results of this technology. The aim is to move the mobile unit to several companies with interest in liquid waste treatment, and connect to the industry electrical system and start the ionization treatment process through electron beam. The mobile unit\'s connection to the local electrical system can be a challenge in behalf of the great diversity of voltages and distances involved, as well as the large injections of harmonic content generated by the electron beam accelerator that can affect sensitive loads in the industrial system. In this work, an analysis was made of the power system of the mobile unit, regarding interruption capacity, selectivity protection and adequate short circuit levels in order to assure a greater reliability in the operation. At the end, the control panel of the mobile unit, simulations and measurements were carried out at the 1.5 MeV and 37.5 kW electron beam accelerator, installed at the Intensive Radiation Technology Center, which demonstrated the necessity of applying of a filter to reduce the measured harmonic distortion.
