Complex phenomena occurring in the plasma emerge from the strong interaction of its constituents. This hot and dense strongly interacting matter can be created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and its properties can be studied by measuring particles produced in the collisions. Partons produced in hard scatterings interact with the medium which modifies the production of particles in jets. Measurements of spectra of identified particles produced in jets represent an important tool for understanding the interplay of various hadronization mechanisms which contribute to the particle production in the medium created in heavy-ion collisions. Sob o viés dos Estudos da Tradução, esse projeto tem por objetivo analisar a tradução intersemiótica das personagens Alice, Gato de Cheshire, Coelho Branco e Rainha de Copas. Tendo em vista esse objetivo, serão utilizadas as abordagens de Charles Peirce (1839) e Júlio Plaza (2001) para elucidar a reconstrução intersemiótica das personagens por meio das relações entre as tríades sígnicas icônicas, indiciais e simbólicas que a compõem. Ademais, também será examinado o impacto da disneyficação, segundo Alan Bryman (2004) e Janet Wasko (2001), na realização da adaptação fílmica e o impacto que esta possui tanto para o texto de partida, quanto para o público de chegada.

This thesis is a full political biography of Alice Perrers, the mistress of Edward III from the early 1360s until his death in June 1377 and mother to three of his children. It argues on the basis of the progression of her career that after the death of Edward's queen consort Philippa of Hainault in August 1369 Alice was able to extend the scope of her power and influence to the point that she became a ‘quasi' or ‘uncrowned' queen and, consequently, that her contribution to the political crisis of the 1370s can only be fully understood in terms of queenship. More generally, despite the recent increase on work on Alice, this study suggests that her life deserves a more thorough and nuanced appraisal than it has so far received. Various aspects of Alice's life are explored: her birth, family and first marriage; her early years as Edward III's mistress; the change in her status after Philippa of Hainault's death; her commercial activity as a moneylender and businesswoman; her accumulation of a landed estate and moveable goods; what happened to her in the Good Parliament; her trial in 1377; her marriage to William Wyndesore; and her life after Edward III's death. By examining Alice's career in this fashion it is shown that she took a leading role in the court party during the 1370s. Ultimately, by taking the original approach of applying ideas about queenship to a royal mistress this thesis demonstrates that Alice was perceived to have ‘inverted' or undermined the traditional role that the queen played in complementing and upholding the sovereignty and kingship of her husband, something that has implications for the wider study of not only mistresses, but also queens and queenship and even male favourites.

The term womanism, although it also refers to the black feminism, relates to a movement that transcends the social aspect; it is, therefore, a spiritual movement, committed to the survival and welfare of all people, independent on race, sex, religion, among others. The novel The Color Purple tells Celie’s story, a semi-illiterate black teenager who writes letters to God, telling situations about her life. Through friendship with other women and, consequently, the discovery of new ways of being and feeling, the character tries to overcome the trauma caused by the separation of her sister and her children, and the physical and psychological rapes she had suffered. In this research, we investigate, specifically, the rewriting of four female characters – Celie, Nettie, Sofia and Shug – since we perceive them as the main representative of womanism in the novel. Our hypothesis is that some womanist aspects, such as religion and homosexuality, were softened in the translation, due to contextual issues, whereas others were emphasized because they were adapted into both the poetics of the cinema of the 80’s, and of the director. As theoretical background, we take Even-Zohar’s postulates (1990), about the polysystem theory, and Toury’s assumptions (2012), which understand the studies of translation emphasizing the cultural factor, and considering the influence that the target culture has on the translation process. We also take Lefevere’s concept of rewriting (2007), which emphasizes the historical and cultural nature of the translated texts. Concerning the translation of literary works into the cinema, we use the studies by Cattrysse (1992), and the considerations of authors, such as Stam (2008; 2011) and Hutcheon (2013), who discuss the relationship between the two language systems. Finally, about womanism, the reflections by Maparyan (2012) and Walker (1983) are critical in conducting the analysis. The results showed that the strategies of softening and emphasis on the translation of the female characters’ womanist traits concern the translators’ poetic, as well as the specificities of the cinematic system. Therefore, in the adaptation, they reflect much more the poetics of Hollywood cinema of the 80’s, and of the director, than the womanism observed in the literary work. / A presente dissertação analisa a tradução do “womanismo” em The Color Purple (1982), da escritora Alice Walker, para o filme homônimo de 1985, dirigido por Steven Spielberg. O termo womanism, embora se refira também ao feminismo negro, diz respeito a um movimento que transcende o social; ele é, portanto, um movimento espiritual, comprometido com a sobrevivência e o bem-estar de todas as pessoas, independente de raça, sexo, religião, entre outros aspectos. O romance The Color Purple narra a história de Celie, uma adolescente negra semiletrada, que escreve cartas a Deus, contando sobre sua vida. Por meio da amizade com outras mulheres e, consequentemente, da descoberta de novas formas de ser e sentir, a personagem tenta superar os traumas causados pela separação da irmã e de seus filhos e pelos estupros físicos e psicológicos que sofreu. Nesta pesquisa, investigamos, especificamente, a reescritura de quatro personagens femininas – Celie, Nettie, Sofia e Shug – uma vez que as percebemos como as principais representantes do “womanismo” no romance. Partimos da hipótese de que alguns aspectos “womanistas”, tais como religião e homossexualidade, foram suavizados na tradução, devido a questões contextuais, enquanto outros foram enfatizados porque se adequavam à poética, tanto do diretor, quanto do cinema da década de oitenta. Como fundamentação teórica, recorremos aos postulados de Even-Zohar (1990), sobre a teoria dos polissistemas, e aos pressupostos de Toury (2012), que entendem os estudos da tradução com ênfase no fator cultural, considerando a influência que a cultura de chegada exerce sobre o processo tradutório. Baseamo-nos também no conceito de reescritura, de Lefevere (2007), que enfatiza o caráter histórico e cultural dos textos traduzidos. Sobre as questões de tradução de obras literárias para o cinema, empregamos os estudos de Cattrysse (1992), e as considerações de autores, tais como Stam (2008; 2011) e Hutcheon (2013), que discutem sobre a relação entre os dois sistemas de linguagem. Por fim, no que se refere ao “womanismo”, as reflexões de Maparyan (2012), bem como da própria Walker (1983) são fundamentais na condução da análise. Os resultados mostraram que as estratégias de suavização e ênfase na tradução dos traços “womanistas” das personagens femininas dizem respeito à poética dos tradutores, bem como às especificidades do sistema cinematográfico. Por isso, na adaptação, elas refletem muito mais a poética do diretor e do cinema hollywoodiano dos anos oitenta, do que o “womanismo” observado na obra literária.

The subject of this thesis are interpretations and overinterpretatios of Lewis Carroll's work Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. That includes interpretations based on autor's life and the historical period which he lived in, psychoanalytic, feministic and psychedelic interpretations and those which perceive Alice's story as a game. In this thesis there are also mentioned adaptations based on motives of both novels. We use a theory of interpretation of Umberto Eco to distinguish between these interpretations. This theory is used in our own analysis in which we focus on crucial aspects. That means the behaviour of the main character and vice versa, identity of Alice, context, genre and the model reader of the naration. We also focus on these aspects in the selected interpretations. The emphasis is put on the proces of dialectics between the text and its reader which these interpretations and overinterpretations come from. We also try to see it from the point of view of the aproach to the text. That is why this case study reveals a problem of remake and adaptation.

With a world than is becoming more and more urbanized and with more importance being placed on cities the likelihood that our urban centers will be the focus of future warfare increases. This study will examine how Alice Hills theory can explain success in urban warfare in a comparative case study. The purpose of this study is to affect the validity of Hills theory. This method used in this study is a theory testing case to examine to what extent Hills´s theory can explain the failure during the first battle of Grozny and the success during the second battle of Grozny and by doing so increasing the validity of hills Theory. The two cases have similar background variables, which allows for a structured comparison of the two cases. The analysis is based on Hills’s success factors in urban warfare.  The results show the importance of morale and skill in urban combat.

World building is a key component to many young adult novels, but what is world building and what are some different styles and techniques that authors use when constructing fictional universes? In this thesis, Falling Down the Rabbit Hole: World Building Techniques in YA Literature, I will examine Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865), The Princess Bride by William Goldman (1973), and my own unpublished novel, The Sun Kingdom, to compare different techniques and styles of world building. These works will be explored through the aspect of world building, focusing specifically on the importance of the geography, language, and traditions and culture that were created for their respective worlds, how these elements were created, and what effect this has on the story.
