Soares, Fabrício Antônio Antunes January 2011 (has links)
This work intends to elaborate on the narrative construction of the concepts of structure and subject in the book The Poverty of Theory of the English historian Edward Palmer Thompson (1924-1993). With the crisis of Marxism in 1956, left-wing intellectuals started to rethink Marxism as theory and as political practice. In the 1960s and 1970s the French philosopher Louis Althusser (1918-1990) acquired a great prestige in the English Marxist historiography through the members of the second new left. The book here analyzed is a response to the infiltration of Althusserian Marxism in England. The concepts of structure and subject are evaluated from three points of incorporation. First, the language market of the Thompson times; second, the book grammar which enables to understand the semantic and pragmatic rules of the text, and finally, an analysis of proper names and concepts that compose the text, from the problematic uses of past contained in words. Thus one can understand that the narrative constitution of concepts appears as a way of reframing the past in the historian writing to reconstruct the temporality cracked with Marxian crisis of 1956.

Handling Authenticity: A Discourse Analysis of Interviews with Signs-following Preachers

Dubay, Chelsie M 01 December 2014 (has links)
The National Geographic Channel’s miniseries “Snake Salvation” resurrected a vested interest with the heavily documented practices of signs-following believers in central Appalachia. The current body of scholarship surrounding these congregations focuses mostly on oral history narratives and explanations of religious fundamentalism; a critical analysis of the discourse shared by these congregation members is noticeably absent. This thesis explores selected interviews with George Hensley, Andrew Hamblin, Jamie Coots, and Alfred Ball through the interdisciplinary application of discourse analysis paired with social disclosure theory to unveil the underlying struggles with power and personal beliefs expressed by each pastor. The research performed throughout this study spans interviews collected and published from the 1940s to 2014. Through a discourse analysis performed on these interviews coupled with support from sociological and communicative theoretical frameworks, this study looks to highlight struggles with power and authenticity present for signs-following pastors.

Michel Foucault: pojem ekonomie v díle Slova a věci / Michel Foucault: The Term "Economy" in the Work The Order of Things

Mareš, Richard January 2014 (has links)
The thesis interprets the development of Foucault's thinking and within The Order of Things it subjects the whole concept of economy to critical reflection and defines the structure and dynamics on which the term is built. My work progresses from the abstract issue of Foucault's thinking to specific theories related to the topic. The first part is focused on the key changes and breaks across the author's thinking and work and forms the basis for a comparison of The Order of Things with a broader view of Foucault's thinking. Then I follow with economic theory basis in The Order of Things and define terms such as monetary theory, value theory, wealth analysis and other that are directly connected with economic issues. I focus on authors of economic theories who have influenced Foucault's thinking or are differently connected with my explication, e.g. Adam Smith, David Ricardo or Karl Marx. In the final part of the thesis I compare Foucault's thoughts and conclusions with the philosophy of Louis Althusser in his book Reading Capital which is based on Karl Marx's theories. The focus is mainly on the interpretation of modern episteme which is in The Order of Things directly related to the term of economy. I introduce common and different attributes of Althusser's and Foucault's thinking and present my...

The Impossibility of Freedom in Las manos de Dios and El sueño del ángel

Di Giordano, Matthew John 30 November 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Critics generally read the matter of diagetic subjectivity as existential in Carlos Solórzano's works Las manos de Dios and El sueño del ángel. This study, however, seeks to explore the possibility of non-existential modes of subjectivity in these dramas. It posits an Althusserian mode of subjectivity due to the central conflict of the plays revolving around the oppressive rituals of a controlling church institution. Although the author expresses existential ideals, a reading that takes into account the issue of the church as an ideology producing mechanism, as well as its modes of operation, shows that on the diagetic level the experience of the characters is one in which they find themselves in a world where individuals operate as non-autonomous subjects.

George Canning, Liberal Toryism, and Counterrevolutionary Satire in the Anti-Jacobin

Thompson, Martha 01 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
One of the most defining moments in the histories of British satire and the public sphere took place in the late 1790s in an abandoned house in Piccadilly. Here George Canning and several fellow conservatives began writing and circulating their weekly newspaper the Anti-Jacobin. Although the periodical has been critically neglected, it is a valuable model for exploring how literary (partisan) politicians attempted to form a rational and critical public sphere through their satiric poetry. Founded by George Canning and edited by William Gifford, the Anti-Jacobin seems to reflect a reactionary conservative's ideology and has been summarily dismissed because of this one-sided nature. In this essay, I suggest a more nuanced reading of both Canning's biography and his Anti-Jacobin poetry that will give a fuller and more accurate version of Canning, one that illustrates a moderate reformer who is concerned with centralizing the extremism of the 1790s.

Geschlechternormen-inkonforme Körperinszenierungen - Demokratisierung, De-Konstruktion oder Reproduktion des sexistischen Geschlechterverhältnisse?

Schulze, Detlef Georgia 13 December 2005 (has links)
The present study dealing with the topic ‘geschlechternormen-inkonforme Körperinszenierungen’ (approximately: body styling / body formation which is contrary to the hegemonic gender rules) is a theoretically based, empirical scrutiny of Judith Butler’s thesis, that there exists a possible connection between queer practices and the subversion of existing gender hierarchy. The thesis explores the relationship between body practices and other practices, especially labour and political practice. The term ‘geschlechternormen-inkonforme Körperinszenierungen’ refers to three practices or three different ways of a person’s behaviour towards his or her own body: it refers firstly to transsexuals, who changed their body physically; secondly it refers to transgender people, who occasionally or permanently do cross dressing in everyday life without having changed their bodies physically; and thirdly on drag kings and drag queens who show a different sex on stage than in everyday life. All people stage a ‘geschlechternormen-inkonforme Geschlechtlichkeit’, that means a gender that doesn’t coincides with their “true” or “natural” sex due to hegemonic criteria. The method of the empirical part of the study consists of obtaining data through the ‘Problemzentriertes Interview’ (problem-focussed interview) invented by Witzel, and the analysis of the data through the ‘Qualitative Inhaltsanalyse’ (qualitative content analysis) invented by Mayring. The study assumes that the deconstruction of domination includes the disappearance of the social groups (in the case at issue: men and women), between whom exists a relation of domination, because that groups are products of the practices of domination. The study shows, that – far from this – there happens within the interviewed sample a permanent reproduction of genders and gender hierarchies. The .pdf-file of the entire thesis consists summaries in English, French, Castilian, and German language longer than the present abstract.
