Controlling Hypertension Among Young Black Men in America: A Prescription Medication AlternativeCharles, Winston 01 January 2019 (has links)
Despite the evident improvements in the awareness of hypertension among the adult population in the United States, disparities remain in the burden of the disease, its treatment efficacy, and its control when data are compared along age, gender, and race. The purpose of this study was to determine the strength of the relationship between blood pressure control and prescription medication and lifestyle modification (smoking cessation, changes in eating habits, and weight loss). The target population were adult young Black men, and the control variables were age, low socioeconomic status (SES), and disparities in health care. A convenience sample of Black men (age 16-45 years) was obtained (N = 297) from the 2013-2014 NHANES dataset, and bivariate and multiple regressions were conducted after the assumptions were satisfied. The results indicated a statistically significant relationship between prescription medication and systolic blood pressure control (B = -4.327, p = 0.009). The findings of the study can promote social change by highlighting that medication compliance must be encouraged and adhered to by members of this high-risk group. However, further research is suggested to explore the efficacy of lifestyle modification closely to determine if this is a viable treatment option for young Black men of low SES in the United States.

Studiens syfte är att undersöka och bidra med ökad kunskap om skolkuratorers erfarenhet av deras arbete och möte med gymnasieelever i åldrarna 15–19 år som lider av psykisk ohälsa.. Frågeställningarna i denna studie är: Hur ser skolkuratorers handlingsutrymme ut när det gäller att stödja och hjälpa en ungdom som lider av psykisk ohälsa? Utifrån skolkuratorers erfarenheter- vilka konsekvenser ger psykisk ohälsa för ungdomarna? Studiens metod baseras på kvalitativ forskningsmetod där fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer har analyserats utifrån kvalitativ analys. Intervjudata analysera genom Kvales sex analyssteg med stöd av två teorier. Dessa teorier är teorin om handlingsutrymme samt systemteori. Resultatet visar att de intervjuade skolkuratorerna upplever att deras handlingsutrymme inte är begränsat. Däremot uttrycker vissa av de att deras handlingsutrymme blir begränsad på grund av tid och att de inte får utföra behandlingsinsatser. Vidare berättar respondenterna att konsekvensernas av psykisk ohälsa kan skilja sig åt, men att de mest förekommande faktorerna är sömnproblem, stress, uppväxtmiljön och relationer med vänner och familj.

The study investigated factors influencing nursing turnover in selected private hospitals in England as the United Kingdom recruited 57 136 nurses from non-European countries from 1998 till 2003. Herzberg's Theory of Motivation was used to contextualise the research results obtained from 85 completed questionnaires.
In terms of Herzberg's Theory of Motivation the intrinsic factors (motivators) that could influence nurses' turnover rates were nurses' dissatisfaction with irregular promotions, lack of recognition by doctors, and nurses' lack of autonomy. The extrinsic (hygiene) factors included dissatisfaction with their salaries, and marked dissatisfaction with organization and administration policies and nurses' inability to access information about patient care and about the management of their units.
Nurses' turnover rates might be reduced if promotion policies could be consistent, doctors would value nurses' work and if nurses could be more autonomous. Enhanced communication about policies and about accessing information, as well as improved salaries,could contribute to reduced turnover rates among nurses. / Health Studies / M. A. (Public Health)

O presente estudo tem como finalidade o conhecimento dos estressores, na atuação dos enfermeiros de centro cirúrgico e recuperação anestésica (CC/RA), assim como as estratégias de coping usadas. A população foi composta por todos os enfermeiros de CC/RA da cidade de Santa Maria, no Rio Grande do Sul. Foram dezessete entrevistados, sendo cinco atuando em hospital privado (29,41%) e doze em hospital público (70,59). Na coleta de dados foram utilizados dois instrumentos: formulário para levantamento de atividades diárias, e inventário de estratégias de coping. Os resultados foram tabulados e analisados usando-se testes não paramétricos. Obteve-se pela avaliação subjetiva e individual dos enfermeiros que 70,59% dos entrevistados percebem-se estressados ao atuar em CC/RA. Pela identificação dos estressores no desempenho das atividades diárias dos enfermeiros, concluiu-se que as condições de trabalho em CC correspondem à área de maior stress para 41,18% dos enfermeiros independentemente do cargo ocupado. Quanto às estratégias de coping mais utilizadas pelos enfermeiros, destaca-se a resolução de problemas. Detectou-se uma diferença significativa entre: stress total e stress percebido por meio da avaliação individual e subjetiva; stress total e o stress decorrente de possuir curso de pós-graduação; stress total e o stress referente ao relacionamento com equipe médica e de enfermagem; ao relacionamento com serviços diretamente ligados à assistência do paciente durante o ato anestésico cirúrgico; atividades relacionadas à administração de pessoal; e condições de trabalho para o desempenho das atividades do enfermeiro de CC. O enfermeiro de CC/RA é estressado, mas tem algumas estratégias que oferecem apoio à realização de sua atividade profissional. / This study intents to verify stress and coping among operating room (OR) nurses and recovery room nurses. The population was composed for all nurses in Santa Maria,RS, Brazil. The total of 17 nurses were intervened, that 29,4% was from private hospitals and 70,6% form governmental hospitals. The date was collected by Diary activities inventory" and ways of coping questionnaire". The results demonstrated that 70,6% of nurses perceived as stressed. The conditions of work" was the stressful item cried (41,18%) and was not dependent of function in OR. They answered that solving problems" was the most useful coping strategy. Differences statistical significant were detected among; total of stress and perceived stress; total of stress and post-graduate curse; total of stress and relation ship with doctors, nurses, other departments, staff administration and work conditions. In conclusion, the OR nurses were stressed but the used coping strategies in order to work and live.

Previous issue date: 2012-08-21 / The pillar that supports this thesis consisted of psychoanalysis in critical social
situations, using these instruments: semi-structured interviews for study 1 and a focal
group for study 2. We undertook a Discourse Analysis as developed by Pêcheux (1983),
Minayo (2000) and Orlandi (2005), as well as the investigation of the modal verbs
can , want to, should and have to/need to , in their different modes, identifying
how these verbs, as used by the respondents, relate to epistemic or deontic modalities,
pursuant to Santos (1999), Santos (2000), Alves (2007) and Martins (2011). The main
objective of this study was to establish a reflection on the means through which the
transformations that have taken place within the family and the decline of patriarchy can
have influenced the so-called decline of the paternal function , in its most traditional
meaning. Analyze the aspects related to emerging concept of childhood and
adolescence, the society of narcissism, how they contributed to the decline of the
father , and how they influenced the decline of the paternal function and provided
subsidies to violence in social interaction of young students. Specifically, the aim of this
thesis was to obtain information on actions categorized as violent by young students;
identify factors that contribute to school violence among young people and determine
the relationship between violent sociability in young students and the paternal function.
As a result, it is possible to conclude that children and young people were gradually
subjected to the condition of subjects. However, changes that have been taking place in
the family and in how its members are dealt with, mainly the children and the young
people, have altered the relationship between parents and their children. New social
actors and the State interfere in family life, by occupying the place of a symbolic
father, replacing parents in their duties and weakening the authority of the father and
his function. Therefore, this study leads us to the assumption that it is violence, taken as
a producer of meanings that guides the current violent sociability among young
students, resulting from the decline of the paternal function. / O suporte fundamental desta tese constituiu-se da psicanálise em situações sociais
críticas, cujos instrumentos utilizados para pesquisa foram: entrevistas semiestruturadas
para o estudo 1 e grupo focal para o estudo 2. Empreendemos a Análise do Discurso
desenvolvia por Pêcheux (1983), Minayo (2000) e Orlandi (2005), bem como a
investigação dos verbos modais poder , querer, dever e ter que/ter de , em seus
variados modos, identificando como esses verbos, na forma utilizada pelos
respondentes, se relacionam com as modalidades epistêmicas ou deônticas, conforme
orientações de Santos (1999), Santos (2000), Alves (2007) e Martins (2011). O objetivo
principal desta pesquisa foi refletir como os modos pelos quais as transformações na
família e o declínio do patriarcado pode haver influenciado o chamado declínio da
função paterna , no seu sentido mais tradicional. Analisar aspectos relativos à
emergência das concepções modernas de infância e adolescência, da sociedade do
narcisismo, como contribuíram para o declínio do pai , e como influenciaram o
declínio da função paterna e subsidiaram a sociabilidade violenta dos jovens escolares.
Especificamente, levantar informações acerca das ações consideradas violentas pelos
jovens na escola; identificar fatores que contribuem para a violência escolar entre jovens
e verificar a relação entre a sociabilidade violenta em jovens escolares e a função
paterna. Como resultado pode-se concluir que as crianças e os jovens foram submetidos
gradativamente à condição de sujeitos. Porém, as transformações na família e nos
modos de lidar com os componentes, principalmente as crianças e os jovens,
modificaram as relações entre pais e filhos. Novos atores sociais e o Estado
interferem na vida familiar, ocupando o lugar de pai simbólico, substituindo a função
dos progenitores e enfraquecendo a autoridade do pai e de sua função. Portanto, esse
estudo nos leva a pensar que a violência considerada como produtora de sentidos é que
norteia a atual sociabilidade violenta em jovens escolares, em razão do declínio da
função paterna.

Developing an Educational Module on Compassion FatigueHennes, Francisca Chinyere 01 January 2017 (has links)
Compassion fatigue is viewed as a disconcerting issue facing healthcare professionals in the clinical care milieu, and nurses are identified as the most susceptible population among healthcare professionals. The purpose of this project was to create positive social change by helping oncology nurses find ways to enhance self-care and self-awareness, thereby reducing the risk of compassion fatigue and burnout among healthcare professionals. This project investigated an educational module on compassion fatigue that focused on (a) identifying the occurrence rates of compassion fatigue among oncology nurses, (b) evaluating the demographic features that were associated with the most frequent rates of compassion fatigue, and (c) educating nurses about ways to decrease or alleviate this problem. The 5 participants for this project included oncology nurses working at a healthcare facility in east Texas. The project was conducted using a quantitative methodology with a descriptive design. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of 5 Likert-type items. The analysis of the information received shows the high levels of compassion fatigue among nurses include (a) staff shortages that require working for long hours under unusual strenuous conditions, such as shifts lasting more than 12 hours without allotted breaks; (b) wearing heavy protective gear that results in a number of adverse reactions; and (c) the fear of contracting the potentially fatal diseases and/or bringing such illnesses back to the families of staff members. The outcome of the project consisted of an education module for oncology nurses that provide information about issues related to compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction. Positive social change may occur by improving the quality of patient care and self-transcendence for healthcare professionals.

<p>This investigation is about how teachers in school can motivate and create interest for science among younger children. Teachers were interviewed about attitudes to their subject and how this affects their lessons.</p><p>I have also tried to find out, both by interviewes but also by studying litterature, what the most important thing is to teach in science, which knowledge is necessarry in the future and why.</p><p>My result indicates that teachers find science both interesting and important but at the same time they also think it is a difficult subject to teach even if they are educated. Both the litterature and the teachers in my study agree that knowledge in science gives us a chance to ask questions, take stands and solve problems and that this knowledge is important for us in our future.</p> / <p>Detta arbete handlar om hur vi som lärare i grundskolans lägre åldrar kan skapa och bibehålla elevernas intresse för naturvetenskapliga ämnen. Genom intervjuer har jag försökt få fram lärares attityder till ämnet och hur detta eventuellt påverkar undervisningen.</p><p>Dessutom har jag försökt ta reda på vad som anses vara viktiga kunskaper för framtiden.</p><p>Mitt resultat pekar på att lärare tycker det är intressant och viktigt med naturvetenskap men att det samtidigt är ett svårt ämne att undervisa i även om utbildning finns. Lärarna menar att det är kunskaper som gör att vi kan ta ställning, ifrågasätta och lösa problem som är viktiga att förmedla bl a för att vi skall klara av att ta hand om vår jord och dess tillgångar. Detta är också något som forskning anser vara viktigt och det får också stort utrymme i läroplanen.</p>
