The role of knowledge representations in rule transfer on a novel problem-solving task

Raden, Megan J 13 May 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Although the independent roles of working memory capacity (WMC) and knowledge in problem solving have been thoroughly researched, there is significantly less work that has explored how WMC and knowledge interact during problem solving. The present study investigated how the quality of knowledge representations contribute to rule transfer in a problem-solving context and how WMC might contribute to the subsequent failure or success in transferring the relevant information. Participants were trained on individual figural analogies rules and then asked to rate how similar they thought the rules were to determine how stimulispecific or abstract their rule representations were. Their rule representation score, along with other measures (WMC and fluid intelligence measures) were used to predict accuracy on a set of test items, of which half included only the trained rules, and the other half were comprised of entirely new rules. Results indicated that the training did improve performance on the test items and that WMC largely explained the ability to transfer rules. Although the rule representations scores did not predict accuracy on the trained items, the results suggest that rule representations may be important for inductive reasoning or pattern recognition, rather than explaining transfer. Furthermore, rule representations uniquely explained performance on the figural analogies task, even after accounting for WMC and fluid intelligence. Altogether, these results indicate that WMC plays a large role in knowledge transfer, even when transferring to a more complex problem-solving context, and that rule representations may be important for novel problem solving.

Conservation in ongoing analogical change: The measurement and effect(s) of token frequency

Krause-Lerche, Anne 22 May 2024 (has links)
In a number of studies of analogical levelling, it has been found that the conservation of irregular formation patterns is typically correlated with the token frequency of the members of a changing class. Interestingly, although it was suggested decades ago that this “conserving effect” of high token frequency may also affect ongoing analogical change, only one case of a change-in-progress in morphology has been investigated so far. Moreover, instead of scrutinizing the concept of frequency, previous research has largely taken the importance of lemma token frequency for granted. The present contribution analyses a case of ongoing analogical levelling in the formation of the imperative singular of German strong verbs with e/i-gradation. A corpus-based study is used to test whether the phenomenon is rightly classified as ongoing change and whether and which frequency variables can explain the trajectory of this change. Evidence is presented that justifies the assumption of a conserving effect of token frequency in ongoing morphological change; however, the study stresses the importance of reconsidering the concept of frequency for different languages and different phenomena of change because even measures like lemma token frequency are not as indisputable as they seem.

Ordflödesförmåga och analogiskt resonerande hos barn med cochleaimplantat i jämförelse med normalhörande barn / Word Fluency Ability and Analogical Reasoning in Children with Cochlear Implants Compared to Normal-Hearing Children

Gärskog, Malin, Hedström, Ingrid January 2018 (has links)
Previous studies have shown that children with cochlear implant (CI) have worse word fluency abilities and analogical reasoning abilities compared to normal-hearing children. There is a relationship between language and analogical reasoning. However, a possible relationship between word fluency and analogical reasoning has not been studied before among children with CI or among normal-hearing children. This warrants the present study, which aimed to examine if there are differences between children with CI and normal-hearing children regarding word fluency and analogical reasoning. The study also aimed to examine the relationship between word fluency and analogical reasoning in children with CI and normal-hearing children. The present study involved nine children with CI aged 6;4–8;2 years and thirty normal-hearing children aged 6;1–7;1 years. Word fluency was examined using the phonological word fluency test FAS and the semantic word fluency test Animal. Visual analogical reasoning was examined using AnimaLogica and verbal analogical reasoning using Spoken Analogies from Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities-3 (ITPA-3). The results of the present study show that the children with CI had poorer word fluency ability and analogical reasoning compared to the normal-hearing children. A relationship between semantic word fluency and verbal analogical reasoning in normal-hearing children was found, with the children with CI showing the same trend. Word fluency ability and analogical reasoning and their relationship has a clinical relevance for speech-language pathologists since this must be considered when investigating and treating language difficulties in children with CI as well as normal-hearing children.

[pt] RUÍDO TOTAL: ANALOGIA E INTERPRETAÇÃO EXTENSIVA / [en] TOTAL NOISE: ANALOGY AND EXTENSIVA INTERPRETATION

GUILHERME MADEIRA MARTINS 15 September 2021 (has links)
[en] The presente thesis is primarily a work of jurisprudence whose object of research is the relationship between two strategies that the lawyer can use to solve problem of regulatory absence and/or insufficiency: analogy and extensive interpretation. Brazilian doctrine is unanimous in understanding that, despite the proximity, analogy and extensive interpretation are distinct strategies. The purpose of this thesis is to question this unanimity; therefore, it seeks to deepen the study of these strategies and investigate the relationship between them. Despite the existing conceptual difference and the distinction presente in the scope of criminal law – which admits the use of extensive interpretation, but not the analogy (except fot the benefit of the defendant) –, the boundary line that marks the scope of both is fluid and whit difficult practical application. Studies on these strategies end up prioritizing differences, neglecting the existing proximity between them. The thesis hypothesis: the key to understanding the relationship betweem analogy and extensive interpretation lies in what they have in common. This proximity is evidenced with the support of recente discoveries in the field of cognitive sciences, especially in studies on analogical reasoning.

Magrinyà Badiella, Carles January 2014 (has links)
This study focuses on two areas: alchemy (Part I) and rituals of initiation (Part II) in the works of Miguel de Cervantes, focusing on Don Quijote de la Mancha as my main case study. The first part analyses the function of alchemy and how it can be interpreted throughout the works and various literary genres of Cervantes. It will demonstrate that the texts of Cervantes contain both explicit and implicit allusions to, as well as different aspects of alchemy, such as operative and spiritual alchemy and how these are ultimately used by Cervantes as a means of expression. The author draws from this rich source and modifies these means of expression in order to achieve various results: sometimes with wit or in relation to fraud; at other times it focuses on inner alchemy relating to chivalry in what I have called spiritual chivalry, which has the aim of self-improvement and ultimately, gnosis. Regarding the chivalric rituals of initiation, according to this investigation chivalry serves as both satire and representation of the alchemical process in the case of Don Quijote, which finds its key moments during the rituals. In this sense alchemy and chivalry are studied as two sides of the same coin, in which the search for something higher, an object (the philosopher stone, the beloved), subjects the protagonist to continuous transmutations and puts him in contact with the transitory, that is, liminal states, people and spaces. From this perspective Don Quixote de la Mancha is built upon liminal poetics. My approach, which follows the tenets of analogical hermeneutics, is included within the framework of the Western Esotericism Studies. The 16th and 17th centuries were a fertile age for alchemy throughout Europe. In Spain, alchemy and other esoteric disciplines co-existed with the Spanish Inquisition and its body for the control of ideas and texts: censorship. By being ambiguous and putting into dialogue different ideas of alchemy, Cervantes not only allowed readers to reach their own conclusions, he also protected his work from censorship.

A linguagem do movimento na arquitetura contemporânea / The language of movement in contemporary architecture

Gambarato, Roberto Rampazzo 07 December 2006 (has links)
This research is characterized as a study of graphconceptual analysis concerning to the importance of processes of creative action related to the subject of the movement by means of representation forms and exploration of space and time in the Architecture. It introduces the representation in the architectural language, understood as the relationship between time and space. It investigates how the movement - being a possible synthesis of this equation - can be noticed, represented and interpreted in the generation of an architectural project. The dissertation contemplates the change of paradigms which characterize the transition of the representational methods, from analogical to digital movement expressions in the architectural language, as well as new parameters of projetual reasoning by means of the analysis of projects of architects, designers and artists. It contextualizes the manifestations of clear relationships in Architecture within the understanding of space, time and movement as a basis of comparative reflection between the modernity and the contemporaneity.

Mise en oeuvre d'un modèle mécanique de l'adhésion cellulaire : approche stochastique / Development of a mechanical model for cell adhesion : a stochastic approach

Mefti, Nacim 30 November 2006 (has links)
We focus in this work on the development of a mechanical model for the description of the cell adhesion in a multiscal context. The first one is microscopic scale, which describes the molecular rupture and adhesion kinetics. At the mesoscopic scale, we model the active deformation of the cell during the motility phenomenon. At the macroscopic scale, we model the time evolution of the adhesion of cell population, under the action of the fluid. Numerical simulations emphasize the rolling phenomenon and the active deformation of a cell

The Duke of Uncertainty -Aspects of Professional Skill

Alsterdal, Lotte January 2001 (has links)
<p><i>The Duke of Uncertainty - Aspects of Professional Skill</i>is a dissertation whose title is a literary metaphor designedto draw attention to encounters with unforeseen problems anddilemmas at work.</p><p>The first part of the dissertation presents the skill andtechnology tradition that has developed over the last twentyyears through explorative case studies. These have covered theskills of various occupational groups, such as processoperators in the paper-and-pulp and chemicals industries, managers and systems engineers working on real timeapplications in specialized knowledge intensive firms as wellas doctors and nurses.</p><p>The theoretical perspective is the epistemology of skillfocusing on the phenomenon of tacit knowledge. This has itsroots in Wittgenstein's philosophy of language as developed bythe philosophers Allan Janik and Kjell S. Johannessen.</p><p>The methodological framework develops indirect analogicalthinking which is a prerequisite for knowledge based onexperience, through exemplification.</p><p>The empirical part of the work shows knowledge offamiliarity among members of an occupational group with lowformal training but extensive practical experience, namelyassistant nurses. A comparative analysis is undertaken inrelation to previous case studies in the field of skill andtechnology aimed at occupational groups with high formaleducational qualifications.</p><p>A particular aspect to which attention is drawn is therhythm in work that unites occupational groups regardless ofeducational background. Occupational skill is treated as acapacity developed to find rhythm in action when confrontedwith situations that are hard to handle. The dissertationconsiders aspects that can be tried out in other occupationalarenas and paves the way for identifying phenomena in workinglife that hinder the development of rhythm in work.</p><p>The dissertation contributes to the setting-up ofundergraduate-level training for groups of people who have notpreviously had access to higher education, and aims tointroduce new aspects into the development of analoguethinking.</p><p><b>Key words</b>: practical versus theoretical knowledge, skillof epistemology, tacit knowledge, comparative case study, literary metaphor, analogical thinking, indirect method, occupational training.</p>
