Impacts of imposed polychronic behaviour upon performance and well being in academic work environments : a 90 point thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Management in Management at Massey University, Turitea, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Love, Laurna M. January 2009 (has links)
In the contemporary workplace individuals differ considerably in the manner they approach their work and achieve outcomes. This thesis examined the construct of polychronicity (preference for undertaking multiple tasks simultaneously) within two intellectually intensive academic work environments. The impacts of imposed polychronicity on performance, job satisfaction, perceived stress and wellbeing were explored. Data was collected from 116 lecturers, teachers, supervisors and managers working in Northern Queensland, Australia. A quantitative approach was taken to data collection. Existing scales were used to measure a range of variables including preferred polychronicity, experienced work unit polychronicity, organisational commitment, job satisfaction, and perceived stress. To provide a qualitative perspective, respondents were asked for comments which were used to add depth and breadth to the study. The findings indicated that preferred polychronicity and experienced work unit polychronicity did not differ over genders or occupations which suggests that polychronicity is likely to be a personal trait. Responses were divided into polychronic, neutral or monochronic preference categories. The findings indicated that when polychronicity was high organisational commitment was high, but when monochronicity was high organisational commitment was lower. Further the findings indicated that when organisational commitment was high, job satisfaction was high and when organisational commitment was low stress was high, although polychrons relationship with stress was lower than that of monochrons. This may suggest that polychrons work better in an imposed polychronic environment than monochrons which supports previous research. The implication for employers is that through understanding the tasking preferences of employees they may be able to tailor strategies to improve and enhance personal wellbeing which in turn may increase job satisfaction, performance, wellbeing and reduce turnover.

Développement de méthodes intelligentes pour la gestion énergétique des bâtiments, utilisant des capteurs sans fils / Development of the wireless microsensors for building energy management systems

Nguyen, Nhat Hai 11 July 2011 (has links)
Load management in an active and intelligent way is one of the major concerns of distributionsystems operators, suppliers and consumers of energy, particularly in the context of the smart-gridproject.The aim of this thesis is to develop and implement a real-time energy management systembased on wireless sensor networks in buildings (residential and tertiary sector). The methods of loadmanagement have been developed to minimize peak demand, maintain thermal comfort, andminimize the cost of consumption. A concept of real-time load management using a wireless sensornetwork has been proposed, based on the ZigBee communication standard. Demonstrators ofadaptive control of heating and air conditioning and of intelligent load shedding for electrical cookershave been developed. The prototypes of the proposed systems have been built and tested on anexperimental apartment to demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of these methods. Thedeveloped system allows to avoid the use of predictive models that are very difficult to identify andself-reconfigure when new electrical devices are added in a building.

Abstract: In a world each time more competitive the reaction's velocity on attending technical requirements with lower and lower costs is fundamental to the success of the companies. In this time, the Lean and the Six Sigma distinguished methodologies with oriented focus to decrease key processes variability and consequently decrease associated losses, like overproduction, inventory, transportation, motion, waiting, rework, down time, etc., focused on financial return to the company, has been used by a growing quantity of industries all over the planet. As the competitive environment changes the way companies do business, companies are embracing both (Lean and Six Sigma) initiatives together to support cost reductions and quality improvements in several different business areas. This work has the objective of showing the efficiency application of the Lean Six Sigma methodology applied in the Logistics context and more specifically in the order leads time reduction. As much Lean as Six Sigma, up to now applied in an isolated way, they had reduced the level of the losses (stocks) significantly or improved the speed of the processes or reduced the variability. A method is proposed and applied in this work to focus the attention in the reduction of these losses, to improve the service process to the requests and, consequently, reducing the time of service. The application of this methodology certainly will help to increase the competitiveness of the national industries by improving their Supply Chain mainly due to the combination of Lean for pursuit simplicity which means efficiency focus and Six Sigma for pursuit perfection which means effectiveness focus.

This study will investigate the use of manager's time, identifying the demands of different management functions (financial, administrative and educational) in the school manager every day. Proper use of time in school management is extremely important in the effectiveness of the strategies developed by the manager in charge of teaching and students' learning process. A school management that aims to provide quality education to the population must sustain support activities, administrative and financial functions, in order to stimulate and support the core activities linked directly to the pedagogical management. From this unrest came the desire to investigate the appropriate use of time as a category of evaluation of school management, analyze the time planning practice adopted by school managers, while identifying possible procedures to be developed in order to contribute to the management and consequently improving teaching and learning process of students in school units. This survey has covered twenty managers of municipal schools in the Northern Regional Education Management. The methodological strategy was based on questionnaire/diary with the group of managers specifically cited. The analysis of data obtained by the research instruments shows that, despite recognizing other relevant factors in achieving positive results in the educational performance of institutions, it is observed that the educational planning and the time devoted to educational management influence the quality of management and consequently the results of academic performance of students. Another conclusion was to the absence of more effective planning by the Department of Education regarding external meetings in which managers are invited to participate. This fact contributes to the loss of part of this effectiveness in school management.

Způsobilosti žáků primární školy řídit svůj čas / Eligibility of primary school pupils to manage their time

Tošnerová, Aneta January 2016 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is procrastination. Procrastination is "the illogical, but deliberate delaying of planned action, which is accompanied by a commitment to alternative activities." (Sliviaková 2010, p. 3). Occasional procrastination however mostly harmless is only a small step from procrastination chronic. Chronic procrastination already points at undesirable situation, the malfunction of a healthy lifestyle and self-control. That view is the starting point for the research work of the problem, which investigates the symptoms of procrastination among primary and secondary school pupils. Procrastination is usually being considered in relation to adults' behaviour. The question asked is whether it is relevant to consider procrastination also in relation to children at primary school. In the theoretical part, we therefore first gathered and compiled the available data about the topic from various Czech and foreign sources, mainly to define with necessary precision the object of the study (procrastination) and learned the wider context of the issue (time management, self- management). The survey is based on interviews with six parents and thirty pupils from 1st to 5th grade. The method of research used with pupils was author a story that allowed them to identify themselves with a certain type of...

: application test sur la ville de Somain / Study and design of a dynamic management model for sewer systems : Application test on the city of Somain

Nakouri, Hend 25 November 2015 (has links)
Generally, real-time management of sewer systems uses two main tools. The first software one, dedicated to weather forecast is known by their imprecision and uncertainty. The main issue of the second one concerns their computational complexity, which becomes a burden, as they require temporal important steps of decision. This leads to an important problem, where the obtained results are generally different from the really waited ones. The main idea and objective of the CARDIO project, which are the core of this thesis, is to deal with this important problem using a new paradigm based on “automatic” concepts rather than applied from “hydrology” point of view. Such approach allows the realization of a large amount of numerical simulation in a fast way during a very short time (a few seconds). This allows dispensing of weather forecast by using real-time meditative pluviometric data directly. The objective is to achieve a system where the decision-making is made based on reliable data and also, the error correction is permanent.

Finding Time for Teacher Collaboration: A Content and Legal Analysis of the Role of Collective Bargaining in Teacher Collaboration Time

Snyder, Jason January 2020 (has links)
It is commonly observed that elementary and secondary teachers often work in isolation and that providing opportunities for teachers to work together helps improve student outcomes. But it can be difficult to find time for teacher collaboration, whether in professional learning communities, grade-level teams, or other collaborative groups. Given the extensive role of collective bargaining agreements in governing teachers’ hours and working conditions, this study explores the role of collective bargaining in creating time for teacher collaboration. Using legal and content analyses, the study examines scope-of-bargaining statutes in each state to determine the extent to which district and union leaders are required to bargain over teacher time. It also uses the content-analysis methodology to review how collective bargaining agreements from thirty-one of the nation’s largest school districts restrict or promote teacher time for collaboration. The study concludes that collective bargaining plays a considerable role in teacher collaboration time. Not only do most states have statutes that require stakeholders to bargain to create opportunities for collaboration time, the resulting collective bargaining agreements directly and indirectly affect time for collaboration. These findings establish that in almost all states where collective bargaining is required, school officials and teachers cannot advance teacher collaboration without the assistance of collective bargaining. Moreover, success in creating collaboration time depends largely on how the collective bargaining agreements restrict or promote that time. In light of these findings, the study recommends that local leaders and state policymakers take steps to promote teacher collaboration through collective bargaining by (1) prioritizing and reducing teacher workload; (2) removing teacher duty-hour limits; (3) expanding noninstructional time, including through additional teacher-collaboration set-asides; and (4) involving school leadership in determining how noninstructional time is used.

Application of discrete event simulation for assembly process optimization : Buffer and takt time management

Snell, Tim, Persson, Pontus January 2020 (has links)
A master thesis within mechanical engineering performed by two student has been conducted at Scania in Oskarshamn. The purpose has been to investigate if Discrete Event Simulation using ExtendSim can be applied to increase Scanias assembly productivity. The projectiles was to investigate how the buffer systems could be managed by vary the amount of buffers and their transport speed. The assembly line takt times with regard of their availability was also investigated. The method of approach was to build a simulation model to gaining valid decision making information regarding these aspects. Process stop data was extracted and imported to ExtendSim where the reliability library was used to generate shutdowns. Comparing 24 sets over 100 runs to each other a median standard deviation of 0,91 % was achieved. Comparing the total amount of assembled cabs over a time period of five weeks with the real timedata a difference of 4,77 % was achieved. A difference of 1,85 % in total amount of shutdown time was also achieved for the same conditions. The biggest effect of varying buffer spaces was for system 6A. An increasement of up to 20 more assembled cabs over a time period of five weeks could then be achieved. By increasing all the buffertransports speeds by 40 % up to 20 more assembled cabs over a time period of ve weeks could be achieved. A push and pull system was also investigated where the push generated the best results. A 22 hour decreasement of total shutdown time and an increasement of 113 more assembled cabs over a time period of ve weeks could be achieved.
