The visible patient. Hybridity and inpatient ward design in a Namibian context.

Nord, Catharina January 2003 (has links)

Even if one is confident that the staff provide the bestpossible treatment, being admitted into hospital is still astressful situation. In recent decades, architecturalresearchers have elaborated on aspects of the patient'sperspective where the design of the physical environment maypositively enhance the healing experience. The emergingunderstanding reveals that this is not an issue to be solvedsimply by decorative design, for it entails the spatialinterpretation and integration of broader and deeper facets ofhuman response, within which suffering, empathy andprofessional care are embraced.

This thesis elucidates the patients' use of space accordingto their cultural perceptions in two inpatient wards in aregional hospital in northwestern Namibia. The study appliescase study methodology with the focus on the interactionbetween patients, visitors and nursing staff in relation to thephysical environment.

The theoretical basis within medical anthropologyconceptualises sickness as a cultural event in the dual notionillness and disease, signifying two ways of understandingsickness, the individual and the professional interpretations. The Foucauldian theory on discipline and space suggests thatthe biomedical discipline is spatially represented by themodern hospital, from which aspects of illness areexcluded.

The results show that circumstances in the physicalenvironment highly influence the patients' illness experienceby possessing certain qualities or by the activities renderedpossible by spatial conditions. The two wards possess manymodern qualities adding to an enclosed and restrictingenvironment. Patients come from a culturally dynamic andchanging context where new approaches to healthcare andhospital physical space are generated. Whereas patients haveintegrated hospital-based biomedicine as a medical alternative, modern hospital space cannot accommodate certain patient needs.Patients, visitors and nursing staff negotiate space in orderto overcome spatial weaknesses. Family members' overnightaccommodation in the hospital, as well as their voluntarycontribution to patient care, are two important aspects whichare not spatially incorporated.

An alternative ward design is suggested in which patients'and family members' active participation in the healing processis encouraged, with support from the nursing staff. The higherflexibility the design offers caters for the spatialintegration of future hybrid processes.

L'enseignement de l'architecture à l'Ecole des beaux-arts au XXe siècle : une lecture des règlements et de la pédagogie (1863-1968) / The education of the architecture to the Ecole des beaux-arts in the XXth century : a reading of the regulations and the pedagogy (1863-1968)

Diener, Amandine 26 June 2017 (has links)
This PHd thesis is focused on the architect’s formation at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during the Twentyth century. It is focused on the history of both regulations and pedagogy. Archives of the Ecole de Beaux-Arts and texts of regulations show reformes and period of stability along the century. The teaching of Architectural Theory, expecially the articulation between courses and contests, shows some pedagogical practices. By using a double perspective, continuities and evolutions have been highlighted. Moreover the abilities of the institution to let its academic traditions evolve has been explored. From Paris to provincial schools, from academical contest to professional one, from courses to contests, an innovative way of understanding teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during the Twentyth century is proposed.

The Gavel and the Ghost

Smit, Reynard January 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores an alternative method of making Architecture based on ideas presented by Bruno Latour in “Give me a gun and I will make all buildings move” and concepts discussed by Peter Eisenman within “Diagram: An Original Scene of Writing.” The static nature of representation within Euclidian Space requires a re-evaluation of the generative qualities inherent within diagrams. Managed through an identified mechanism, the thesis investigates the excavation of potential within Pretoria Central’s lost spaces by generating programme, response and resolution from elements inherent in the diachronic context. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Paolo Portoghesi et la voie post-moderne : le débat architectural dans l’Italie de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle / Paolo Portoghesi & the Postmodern way : the architectural debate in Italy during the second half of the twentieth century

Chavardès, Benjamin 28 November 2014 (has links)
Following the fall of the Fascist regime, Italy enters a phase of rebuilding and reconstruction, also on an ideological and cultural level. In the field of architecture, this phenomenon triggers debates about the link to the tradition, the dialog between history and practice of the architectural project, and a renewed relationship between the buildings and the city. This environment and the First Venice Biennale are conducive to Post-modernism theories to develop themselves. This intellectual renewal of the discipline is here analyzed via a particular focus: Paolo Portoghesi's one. This architect holds throughout his carrier several major positions in the educational field, research field, press sector, book publishing and also as a practitioner. The thesis aims at highlighting the role Portoghesi played in the history of the second half of the twentieth century, through his texts and works, and the testimonies of his contemporaries. After examining his work as an architectural historian and a Roman Baroque specialist (Chapter One), the study shows how his researches are used in the architectural conception, making him a representative of the operative criticism (Chapter 2). Considering his action as a teacher, Editor in Chief and President of the architectural section of the Venice Biennale, enables to position him in the Roman School of Architecture (Chapter 3) and as one of the major characters of Post-Modernism in Europe (Chapter 4). His life's path illustrates the transition between willing to stick to the spirit of the time and the theory of the genius loci, firstly through contemporary city conception (Chapter 5), then with the concept of “geo-architecture”.

disorder, defiance & disobedience : negotiating the city through the confrontations of graffiti—tools for reimagining our rights within the built environment

Ellen, Sahlberg January 2022 (has links)
Architects imagine and reimagine utopia. It is a role with the task to produce cities that are liveable, beautiful, functional, flexible and inclusive. Spaces made for and together with people, and places that meet their needs and dreams. Architects and urban planners don’t plan for the city to be disused, vandalised or constantly decorated and redecorated by an anonymous group, however, it is. Graffiti writing creates a sense of belonging and freedom, a liberating idea that architects, urban planners, and politicians are not alone in forming our spaces and places. Cities grow, change, are being used, disused, defined and redefined through graffiti. Disobedient and defying activities are constantly happening to our buildings, without the architect’s knowledge or power. The disorder and chaos of graffiti is a contrast to the planned world architects imagine. Architecture depends and affect the social, economic, and political climate of the city—and graffiti are dependent on the external structures as well. An anarchist perspective enables liberating and theoretical tools for reimagining the future. Cities are in a constant process of transformation, in the way authority direct the city—also in how the user protest, disrupt, invade, and navigate space. The future of the city, or a utopia, should be seen as a process and not a final product. Architecture and urban planning are part of forming the socioeconomic landscape. In order to have an equal city, architecture must acknowledge the social reproduction of space. Furthermore, we can learn how to be situated, in our understanding, viewing, and designing of space. Defying and disorderly elements in the city impacts the built environment and the socioeconomic landscape. Graffiti bring something from working class roots into the city and mediate confrontations between different socio-spatial groups. It allows a discussion on how places can, and should, feel liberating, fun, and flexible—rather than static, forbidden, or inaccessible. Through discussions on graffiti, it’s role and imprint, together on anarchist spatial design and notions on anarchist utopia—this thesis is about confrontations in order to negotiate the city. Graffiti writing is a disobedient activity that is constantly confronting the rules, the norms, and roles within the city. Through illegal graffiti, I discuss space- and place-making without authority; graffiti as a tool to negotiate the right to the city. The built and planned environment has an important role in shaping socioeconomic landscapes, it can divide people, segregate them, and hand socioeconomic positions—and of course the opposite, bring people together, create affinity and community. Graffiti writing creates confrontation without authority, without being directed and designed by decisionmakers.

Karel Eusebius z Liechtenštejna jako stavebník a stavitel v kontextu jeho teoretického díla / Karl Eusebius from Liechtenstein as an patron of the arts in context of his theoretical work

Skopalová, Veronika January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with a person of Karl Eusebius of Liechtenstein in a field of architecture. Karl Eusebius from Liechtenstein was interested in Architecture in many different poits of view. Firstly, he wrote a theoretical work, which is excerpted and analysed in first chapter. Second chapter summarises buildings (or interventions), which are shown in more detailed form in appendix. Chapter is divided in three parts. In first part are representative buildings at the areas, they traditionaly belonged to House of Liechtenstein, principal seat Valtice and summer residence in Lednice. The building activities are brought together in second part, taken through in manors he was not so strongly interrested. Last but not least, the chapter is about his one and only architectonical work, castle of Plumlov, where is very intensive connection with his theoretical work . This thesis aims to describe relations between theoretical work of Karl Eusebius from Liechtenstein and architecture donated or build by himself and aims to investigate different levels of his interrest.
