La place des femmes au cœur de la résurgence du mythe arthurien dans la seconde moitié du XXème siècle / Women’s place in the heart of the Arthurian myth’s resurgence in the second part of the XXth century

Soria, Séverine 09 December 2011 (has links)
This study analyses women's place in the resurgence phenomenon that the Arthurian myth has known from the second part of the twentieth century onwards. At the root of this resurgence, we mention the significant influence of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and we parallel this novel with the Arthurian legend. Then, we analyse Arthurian rewriting by female French, English or American contemporary authors. On the one hand, we look into works which stay close to the Arthurian tradition; on the other hand, into those which are at odds with this tradition. Finally, we study similarities and divergences between rewritings offered by women and the ones of their male counterparts. We obviously deal with the feminism issue and the one of the feminisation of an essentially and originally masculine topic.Different points related to the feminine question are then tackled, like youth literature, the resort to sciences, the role of religions, and the case of the temptress developed by male authors, in opposition to the valorisation of the feminine body in women's novels. This comparative work between masculine and feminine rewritings of the Arthurian myth aims at determining the place that women have managed to take in the resurgence of this legend and also to question the significance of the systematic sexuation in the myth writings.

Our first aim is to identify the context of the idylls production, associating the work to political, economical and social matters such as the ones that were formed at the Victorian England. The second one is to identify the singularities from the Tennyson´s authorship through the characters selection, episodes and approached themes from the achievement which we call temporal transition, associating the Arthurian myth to the English history. In that manner, we identify what the author believed to be the mission of the poet, linked to social function of culture. The third aim is to identify the royalty built by Tennyson, based on what he considered to be the tradition which passes through all the nation history, the political and personal virtues / Esta dissertação analisa a obra Idylls of the King (1889), do poeta inglês Alfred Tennyson, como documento ou registro histórico.

Goddess Dethroned: The Evolution of Morgan le Fay

Carver, Dax Donald 09 June 2006 (has links)
In the Arthurian romances of the Middle Ages, the character of Morgan le Fay was transformed dramatically from her Welsh original, the goddess Modron. The effect was to vilify the enchantress so that medieval Christians would not be sympathetic to her character. This study consults the oldest available Welsh mythological and historical texts as well as the medieval romances surrounding King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Also consulted are some of the top contemporary Arthurian scholars. By unraveling Morgan’s transformation and the reasons for such change, it is revealed that medieval demonizing of old pagan deities was not limited to male deities. Instead, the most ancient deity of all, the Great Mother Goddess slowly became one of the most infamous characters in literature, Morgan le Fay.

Du vers à la prose et de prose en prose : les réécritures de la "Charette", du "Cligès" et de l'"Érec et Énide" de Chrétien de Troyes dans les proses des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe siècles / From verse to prose and from prose to prose : the rewriting of Chrétien de Troye's "Charette", "Cligès" and "Érec and Énide" within the prose of the XIIIth, the XIVth and the XVth centuries

Sassi, Sana 25 January 2013 (has links)
Chrétien de Troyes’ novels aroused many rewritings. From the XIIIth until the XVth century, several novelists resumed the framework of Chrétien’s language by overtaking the writing inverse. They adopted writing in prose considered best granter of truth, similitude andcredibility for the story. The versions would compete through mixing various styles andstrategies and mainly by celebrating a phenomenon which blooms particularly in the prose ofthe Lancelot, the interlacing. The language also evolved in the course of the centuries. Thisevolution is getting noteworthy when used in prose style as such it looks much betterstructured than the other styles in both narration and syntax. Nevertheless, this care fororganization goes as far as creating sometimes some semantic confusion. And yet in mostcases, it reveals the specificity of each author and his own preferences in terms of writingwhen rewriting Chrétien de Troyes’ novels.

Identité, filiation et problèmes de parenté dans les romans du Graal en prose / Identity, filiation and relationships problems in the Grail romance in prose

Serp, Claire 25 May 2012 (has links)
The cycle Lancelot-Graal, and the Perlesvaus, written in the first half of the thirteenth century, are built around a horizontal time, organized around the figure of King Arthur, which makes any idea of succession problematic. But at the same time, society has undergone profound changes. Whether it is about the institution of marriage, rules of transmission of the inheritance, or the anchoring of the lineage in very specific geographic locations, relationships between individuals have slowly changed. Authors should therefore ensure the coexistence of disparate elements, even contradictory. Genealogy get in Arthurian romance through the Vulgate Cycle. The vertical time affect the novel, and relationships are crucial in narrative constructions of characters.

The Lady Of The Lake And Chivalry In The Lancelot-grail Cycle And Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur

Ewoldt, Amanda Marie 01 January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the Lady of the Lake as an active chivalric player in the thirteenth century Lancelot-Grail Cycle (also known as the Prose Lancelot) and in Thomas Malory's fifteenth-century Le Morte Darthur. To study the many codes of chivalry, particularly in regard to women, I use two popular chivalric handbooks from the Middle Ages: Ramon Lull's Book of Knighthood and Chivalry, Geoffroi de Charny'sKnight's Own Book of Chivalry. Traditionally, the roles of women in medieval chivalry are passive, and female characters are depicted as objects to win or to inspire knights to greatness. The Lady of the Lake, I argue, uses her supernatural origins and nature to break with female chivalric conventions and become an instructress of chivalry to King Arthur's knights. As a purely human character, her power would be limited. As a guardian fairy and/or enchantress, the Lady is allowed to exercise more autonomy
