La tesi riguarda la Seconda Lega ateniese, di cui si studia il periodo, solitamente trascurato, compreso tra la fine della Guerra Sociale (355/4 a.C.) e la sconfitta di Atene a Cheronea (338 a.C.). Fonti principali, come del resto per il periodo precedente, sono le iscrizioni. Vengono quindi analizzate, in ordine geografico e cronologico, diciassette epigrafi di interesse storico (per lo più iscrizioni onorarie e trattati), considerate utili nella ricostruzione delle modalità di intervento ateniese all’interno della Lega. Area geografica privilegiata è la Grecia settentrionale, più immediatamente a contatto con l’espansionismo macedone. Obiettivo della tesi è infatti chiarire se la storia della Lega navale, più che una progressiva perdita di significato, non metta in evidenza un costante e coerente riorientamento degli obiettivi, stimolata dal confronto con Filippo II di Macedonia. / The topic of this thesis is the Second Athenian League during its final, usually underrated period, namely between the end of the Social War (355/4 B.C.) and the Athenian defeat at Chaeronea (338 B.C.). The sources for the history of the League both before and after the Social War are mainly epigraphical. Accordingly, seventeen historical inscriptions are carefully examined and thoroughly commented on: these are mostly honorific decrees and treaties, all of which proved to be useful to investigate how Athens acted within its League. The study, focusing on Northern Greece as the latter became more and more endangered by the growing power of Macedon, tries to ascertain whether the history of the Second Athenian League, far from becoming meaningless, might show a steady and consistent reorientation of its tasks, in and because of the military confrontation with Philip II.

Γεωλογικές και γεωτεχνικές συνθήκες στο χωμάτινο φράγμα του Ευήνου

Για την κάλυψη των αναγκών της ύδρευσης στην Αθήνα, έγιναν μελέτες με σκοπό την ενίσχυση του υδατικού δυναμικού του ταμιευτήρα Μόρνου. Η ενίσχυση του ταμιευτήρα περιελάμβανε την κατασκευή του φράγματος στον ποταμό Ευήνο, περιοχής Αγ. Δημητρίου καθώς και της ενωτικής σήραγγας. Η σήραγγα αυτή θα μετέφερε νερό από τον ταμιευτήρα του Ευήνου στον ταμιευτήρα του φράγματος του Μόρνου. Για την διεξαγωγή της κατασκευής του έργου χρειάστηκαν αρκετές γεωλογικές και τεχνικογεωλογικές μελέτες. Αυτές είχαν ως σκοπό την προτροπή από τυχόν αστοχίες. Οι μελέτες αυτές περιείχαν εργασίες υπαίθρου αλλά και εργαστηριακές δοκιμές. Στο πρώτο μέρος της εργασίας αρχικά τοποθετείται γεωγραφικά το φράγμα. Ακολουθεί μια ανάλυση των τμημάτων και των συνοδών έργων του φράγματος καθώς και για τις κατολισθήσεις που προέκυψαν κατά την κατασκευή του. Επίσης παρουσιάζονται η λιθολογία, η τεκτονική, η υδρογεωλογία της περιοχής της θέσης κατασκευής αλλά και οι συνέπειες που θα μπορούσαν να προκληθούν από την κατασκευή του φράγματος. Στο δεύτερο μέρος αυτής της εργασίας αναλύονται κάποιες από τις εργαστηριακές και επιτόπου δοκιμές, που πραγματοποιήθηκαν στο στάδιο προμελέτης του έργου. Οι επιτόπου περιλαμβάνουν τη διάνοιξη των γεωτρήσεων και την τοποθέτηση πιεζομέτρων. Οι εργαστηριακές ασχολούνται με τα δείγματα από τις γεωτρήσεις, προσδιορίζοντας κάποια από τα χαρακτηριστικά τους όπως τα φυσικά και τις παραμέτρους αντοχής τους καθώς και την ορυκτολογία τους. Στη συνέχεια, ακολουθεί ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων που προέκυψαν και η καταγραφή τους σε διαγράμματα. Στο τέλος, παρουσιάζονται τα συμπεράσματα και το παράρτημα με τους χάρτες από την περιοχή μελέτης. / Extended research took place in order to cover the waterwork needs of Athens and reinforce water dynamic of Mornos reservoir. This reservoir reinforcement include the construct of dam in Evinos river and the integrative tunnel. The tunnel will transfer water from Evinos to Mornos reservoir. For the building of this dam there was need of many geological and geotechnical studies. These studies prevent the dam’s failure. The following studies contain both field tests and controlled laboratory tests. The first part of this study explains the geographical position of the dam (A. Dimitrios area). The rest of the study focuses on parts review, recommendable works and occurring landslides during its construction. Lithology, tectonics and hydrogeology on the building area is also included along with the consequences of the dam construction on the area. The second part analyzes the laboratory and field work tests. The above tests took place at the preliminary design stage of the dam. The filled work tests include the boring of test drillings and the placement of piezometers. The main pursuit of the lab studies is to determine some of the rock characteristics like general physic properties, mechanical strength and mineralogy. The results of the lab studies were used for the formation of specific diagrams. The end of this study summarizes the conclusions of the tests and includes an appendix of the maps of this area.

This volume brings together twenty-eight papers from an International conference on attitudes towards the past and the creating of identities in Antiquity. The volume addresses many different approaches to these issues, spanning over many centuries, ranging in time from the Prehistoric periods to the Late Antiquity, and covering large areas, from Britain to Greece and Italy and to Asia Minor and Cyprus. The papers deal with several important problems, such as the use of tradition and memory in shaping an individual or a collective identity, continuity and/or change and the efforts to connect the past with the present. Among the topics discussed are the interpretation of literary texts, e.g. a play by Plautus, the Aeneid, a speech by Lykurgos, poems by Claudian and Prudentius, and of historical texts and inscriptions, e.g. funerary epigrams, and the analysis of the iconography of Roman coins, Etruscan reliefs, Pompeian and Etruscan frescoes and Cypriote sculpture, and of architectural remains of houses, tombs and temples. Renewing Athens : the ideology of the past in Roman Greece

In this thesis we explore the period of renewal that Athens experienced during the second century AD. This century saw Athens at the peak of her cultural prominence in the Roman Empire: the city was the centre of the League of the Panhellenion and hosted a vibrant sophistic scene that attracted orators from across the Greek world, developments which were ideologically fuelled by contemporary conceptions of Classical Athens. While this Athenian 'golden age' is a standard feature of scholarship on Greek culture under Rome, my thesis delves further to explore the renewal of the urban and rural landscapes at this time and the relationship between that process and constructions of Athenian identity. We approach the renewal of second-century Athens through four lenses: past and present in the Ilissos area; the rhetoric of the Panhellenion; elite conflict and competition; and the character of the Attic countryside. My central conclusions are as follows: 1. The renewal of Athens was effected chiefly by Hadrian and the Athenian elite and was modelled on an ideal Athenian past, strategically manipulated to suit present purpose; the attractions of the fifth-century golden age for this programme of renewal meant that politically contentious history of radical democracy and aggressive imperialism had to be safely rewritten. 2. Athens and Attica retained their uniquely integrated character in the second century. Rural Attica was the subject of a powerful sacro-idyllic ideology and played a vital role in concepts of Athenian identity, while simultaneously serving as a functional landscape of production and inhabitation. 3. The true socio-economic importance of the Attic countryside as a settled and productive landscape should be investigated without unduly privileging the limited evidence from survey, and by combining all available sources, both literary and documentary, with attention to their content, cultural context and ideological relevance.

Before 1891, it was commonly accepted that the most important source for the rule of the Four Hundred in Athens in 411 BCE was Thucydides' description. The situation changed thanks to the publication of the Aristotelian treatise On the Athenian Constitution, whose version of events differed markedly from Thucydides' one. There followed many attempts at determining which of the two versions was most reliable, or at combining the two versions. These controversies are the focal point of this thesis, but its ambitions are not limited to them: its ambition is also to reconstruct the chronology of the rule of the Four Hundred as precisely as is possible in context of the Peloponnesian war; and to formulate the limitations that are imposed on us by the character of sources at our disposal. Continuity of the coup with earlier developments and its impact on subsequent events are dealt with more briefly.

In Homer’s work Iliad, Achilles is harassed in the sleep by the ghost of his friend Patroclus who demands a burial by him to be able to find peace. From this we get an understanding of how important it was for the ancient Greeks that their dead were given a proper burial for the soul to enter Hades and be able to find peace. If the deceased body was not buried, the soul became restless that harassed and had the power to harm the living. Infants belong to the group of individuals that do not appear to have had any consistent way of how to deal with them after they died. Some of them did not receive anything even close to a burial that a deceased adult would have received. Why infants were handled differently in certain contexts and locations is a mystery and begs the question of whether they were not considered to be people when they died and what was required to be considered worthy of a funeral when being dead. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether infants ended up in Hades or not, with the ancient Greeks' view of death and dead bodies as a theoretical starting point. To fulfill the purpose, the following questions were asked; how were dead infants handled? Were they considered to be 'real' individuals? How do the dead infants relate to the notions of becoming restless dead? To be able to answer these questions, I researched material from three different categories of evidence. The discussion has been divided into archaeological, iconographical, and literary sources. There are many different answers to the questions of this thesis as the different sorts of source material indicate diverse answers and attitudes to infants. It all probably depends on the different geographical places, economy, and status in society. These different answers also generate different attitudes to infants and whether they in fact were a real person. But through this thesis I have displayed factors that can support my theory about infants in Hades and that they – in worst case scenario – could end up like restless dead.

Beethoven's Orchestra at the Romantic Piano: Understanding the Piano Transcriptions of "Marcia alla turca" from Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens by Franz Liszt and Anton Rubinstein

The transcriptions of Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894) on Beethoven's "Marcia alla turca" serve as unique examples within the area of transcription since each of these important virtuosos transcribed the movement with drastically different results. Liszt's Capriccio alla turca (1846) is built on Beethoven's thematic materials although it is presented with a greatly embellished accompaniment providing countermelodies, expanded passages, and vigorous rhythmic features. In contrast, Rubinstein's Turkish March (1848) attempts to capture Beethoven's original (1811) as closely as possible adhering to the form and harmonies. Each composer's approach served to showcase new pianistic innovations capturing orchestral sonorities at the piano previously unimagined. This dissertation offers musical insight for two less well-known works from significant pianist-composers which should receive further attention. Additionally, this research provides greater documentation for the compositions of Rubinstein, supplementing the historical accounts of his abilities as a performer. Examination and comparative analysis of each transcription not only illuminates the creative approaches each composer employed in creating his transcription, but also serves pianists wishing to perform these neglected works.

This thesis examines the water resource management in two Greek colonies in Magna Graecia, Akragas and Metaponto, and the relationship between resource management and political regimes. It asks how similar ancient urban theory was to the practical reality, and if different forms of government made different provisions for water management. Chapter 1 outlines urban and health theories found in the works of ancient theorists. It debunks the idea that Hippodamos was the inventor of grid planning, while introducing the concept of ‘total’ city planning. The focus of Classical scholarship on Athens necessitates discussions of several Athenian water systems and how resource management changed (or continued) through different governments in Athens as a point of comparison for Akragas and Metaponto. This chapter focuses on literary analysis and introduces the controversial Southeast Fountain House, with an in-depth consideration of the fountain’s naming and dating problems. Chapter 2 contains the case studies of Akragas and Metaponto and an exploration of the hydrogeology at the two sites, with an introduction to the hydrological phenomenon of karst activity. A discussion of their unique water features—the kolymbethra at Akragas and the canals in the chora of Metaponto—connects the deliberate planning that occurred in both cities to Hippodamos and the urban theorists. Chapter 3 more fully explores the role of tyrants and democracies in water management. Regardless of authorship, water resource management and water systems are necessary for any city, and so most tyrannical water infrastructure continued to be used and expanded and improved upon even under different governments. Even under tyranny water management is a provision of the state and is engaged with and managed by the citizens of the city. Denna studie undersöker pastorsutbildning och formation genom att intervjua fem nyblivna pastorer inom Equmeniakyrkan om deras upplevelse av vad pastorsutbildningen på THS bidragit till för att formas och förberedas som pastorer. Studien som är kvalitativ och abduktiv relaterar teoretiskt till Benjamin Blooms kognitiva, affektiva och psykomotoriska lärandedomäner som översätts till pastoral kontext för jämförelse av vad utbildningen bidragit till, samt till David Kelseys Aten-Berlin-begrepp för att jämföra pastorernas utbildningsideal med pastorsutbildningens utbildningsform. Resultatet visar bland annat att de faktorer som varit viktigast för att forma och förbereda den undersökta gruppen av nyblivna pastorer är: Praktik och övning, Lärare och annan personal, Medstuderande, Undervisning, Retreater, andakter, enskilda samtal, gemensamma resor, Församlingsliv och pastorer. Sammanfattat som Praktik, Relationer, Undervisning och Praktiker (PRUP). Resultatet visar också att det är avgörande på vilket sätt dessa bedrivs. De sätt som för pastorerna har varit formerande beskrivs i uppsatsen. Analysen visar att pastorernas utbildningsideal tillämpat på svenska eftergymnasiala utbildningsformer kan förstås som en blandning av idealen i högskola och folkhögskola, med en betoning på folkhögskola – och att detta krockar med Equmeniakyrkans pastorsutbildning vars utbildningsform är en kombination av högskola och kyrka med en tydlig betoning på högskola. Utifrån dessa fynd presenterar studien fyra möjligheter för Equmeniakyrkan och EHS att minska denna spänning. Uppsatsen diskuterar även likheter och skillnader med tidigare studier, bland annat i fråga om vad som formar och förbereder för tjänst, möjligheten med tredelade lärandemål och frågan om utbildningsform. / This study investigates formation during ministerial education and training by interviewing five newly ordained pastors within the Uniting Church in Sweden about their experience of what the Pastor’s program at Stockholm School of Theology have contributed to for being shaped and prepared as pastor. The study, which is qualitative and abductive, relates theoretically to Benjamin Bloom's cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning domains that are translated into pastoral contexts for studying what the education has contributed to, as well as to David Kelsey's Athens-Berlin concept to compare the educational ideals of pastors, with the program’s institutional form of education. The results show that the factors that were achieved as most important in shaping and preparing the new pastors are: Internship and practice, Teachers and staff, Fellow students, Teaching, Retreats, devotions, individual conversations & joint trips, and Congregational life and pastors. These are summarized as Practice, Relations, Teaching and Practices (PRTP). The result also shows that it is crucial in which way these are conducted. The ways that have been positively formative for the pastors are described in the essay. The analysis shows that the pastors' ideals of education drawn from Kelsey, applied to Swedish post-secondary forms of education can be understood as a mixture of the ideals of university and folk high school, with an emphasis on folk high school - and that this conflicts with the church’s pastor's program whose form of education is a combination of university and church with a clear emphasis on university. Based on these findings, the study presents four opportunities for the Uniting Church in Sweden and the Stockholm School of Theology to reduce this tension. The essay also discusses similarities and differences with previous studies among other things in terms of what shapes and prepares for service, the possibility of three-part learning objectives, and the question of educational form.
