Functional neuroimaging of autobiographical memory.

Cabeza, R, St Jacques, P 05 1900 (has links)
Functional neuroimaging studies of autobiographical memory have grown dramatically in recent years. These studies are important because they can investigate the neural correlates of processes that are difficult to study using laboratory stimuli, including: (i) complex constructive processes, (ii) recollective qualities of emotion and vividness, and (iii) remote memory retrieval. Constructing autobiographical memories involves search, monitoring and self-referential processes that are associated with activity in separable prefrontal regions. The contributions of emotion and vividness have been linked to the amygdala and visual cortex respectively. Finally, there is evidence that recent and remote autobiographical memories might activate the hippocampus equally, which has implications for memory-consolidation theories. The rapid development of innovative methods for eliciting personal memories in the scanner provides the opportunity to delve into the functional neuroanatomy of our personal past. / Dissertation

Echoes of Laocoön's Warning in Letters from an American Farmer

Barry, Douglas 20 May 2011 (has links)
A dramatic shift in tone in the final letter of J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer reveals Farmer James' conflicting attitudes about an independent America. When the letters are juxtaposed with a Western myth of origin such as Virgil's Aeneid, it becomes clear that Crèvecoeur is forcing his narrating persona to repeat a pattern of civilization – destruction, renewal – on which all of Western civilization is based. The sudden pessimism that erupts in the penultimate "Distresses of a Frontier Man" is symptomatic of James' anxiety about the American Revolution and the resulting disruption in his bucolic way of life.

Park, Chang - Hwa 15 February 2012 (has links)
This study focuses on the narrative processes of travel story of Nerval, in terms of intertextuality and autobiography. In the first part, we discuss of the travel story in general, with a focus on the subjective and autobiographical literary travel : its special status as literary genre, its chronological develpment, its forms, its intertextuality and its autobiographical nature. In the second part, we study specificity of the travel story of Nerval on the narrative level, that of intertextuality and that of autobiographical writing, according to diffrents types of Nerval’s travels : realistic travel (Voyage en Orient, Lorely), eccentric travel (Les Faux Saulniers), parodic travel (Les Nuits d’octobre), autobiographical travel (Promenades et Souvenirs) and interior travel (Aurélia). Finally, in the third part, we analyse the poetics of travel writing of Nerval in the context of the modernity of his writing, considering the mixture of forms, the intertextual practices (reference, rewriting and reorganzation), the originality of fanciful traveler, the poetic and dialogic stroy and realistic writing.

O percurso de Paulo Leminski em Vida: a biografia de uma autobiografia / The journey of Paulo Leminski in Vida: the biography of an autobiography

Bellé Junior, Valcir 22 November 2017 (has links)
This research is focused on the book titled Vida (Companhia das Letras, 2013), written by Paulo Leminski. It is the volume which brings together the only four biographies written by the poet between the years 1983 and 1986: Cruz e Sousa o negro branco (1983), Bashô a lágrima do peixe (1983), Jesus a.c (1984), Trótski a paixão segundo a revolução (1986). These books were published sparsely between 1983 and 1986 by publisher Braziliense. The first three books made up a collection called Encanto Radical, while the last one integrated the collection Antologias & Biografias. The proposal of the publishing company demanded a text close to contemporary references, and able to dialogue with its time. Leminski did it by his own way, poetic and erratic. The objective of this research is to investigate the autobiographical fragments of the book and thereby test an hypothesis: could Vida encompass a fragmentary autobiography of the poet? This research want to map out what exist of each biographee in Leminski, as well as what exist of Leminski in every biography that he wrote. Moreover, this journey may bring us some clues about the nature of the text that the poet has produced on these works, because notoriously we are not talking about a conventional biographical text (what is Vida: a serie of poetic biographies, a collection of biographical essays, one creative biography, or only brief literary profiles?)

Overcoming Anonymity: The Use of Autobiography in the Works Of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte

Scalpato, Lauren Ann January 2004 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Susan Michalczyk / In nineteenth-century England, women were struggling to find an outlet for the intelligence, emotions, and creativity that the patriarchal society around them continuously stifled. For women such as Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë, writing served as an opportunity to defy restrictive social structures and offered a needed public voice. By expressing their own thoughts and frustrations, Austen and Brontë helped to overcome the anonymity imposed upon women of their time, as they illuminated the female experience. The following paper takes a look at the ways in which Austen and Brontë imparted autobiographical elements to their female characters, as both authors underwent important catharses and inspired the women around them. To this day, their literature provides critical insight into the troubled existence of the nineteenth-century woman, while revealing their own struggles with their constricted identities. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2004. / Submitted to: Boston College. Fun Home: os efeitos de referencialidade na autobiografia de Alison Bechdel / Fun Home: the effects of referentiality in the autobiography of Alison Bechdel

Camargo, Debora Cristina Ferreira de 26 August 2013 (has links)
The study of literature and art objects from the standpoint of the Greimasian Semiotic Theory indicates that all meaning is generated from semiotic articulations that construct a discourse in any given text. Thus, this study proposes a semiotic analysis of Alison Bechdels graphic autobiography Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. Through the methodology of French semiotics, this analysis describes the discursive devices of persuasion of the autobiographical genre used by the North American cartoonist to convince the reader that they are faced with a real story. Such devices point to an approximation of reality through predominantly referential meaning effects. However, Bechdel (2007b) complicates such an approximation, fictionalizing her characters through literature, not only due to the nature of the utterance, but also as a discursive device within the text. Besides the autobiographical genre, we analyze the structure of comics and the meaning effects produced by the syncretism inherent in the genre, that is, the relationship between verbal text and visual text. Also analyzed are the lesbian issues that permeate the whole utterance and the controversial discursive network that it examine. The proposal is to open a dialogue between language studies, sexuality studies and gender studies. In Bechdel\'s work there is, therefore, the relationship between the autobiographical genre, its textualization through the system of comics and their relevance for a literature encompassing lesbian issues.

Silveira, Bruna Rocha January 2016 (has links)
Nowadays we are educated to have health. No one teaches us to live with a disease. In a society that, with its technological and biomedical advances we believe to control everything and that there is a cure for all evil, have to learn to live and live with the pain and illness is a big challenge. In this thesis I analyze blogs of people living in chronic disease condition as a form of education for the illness. I see this space of communication, education and sharing as well as an identity builder from the autobiographical narrative. Realizing this study from the Cultural Studies in Education and Communication, I construct, first a literature review on the main issues concerning the research: health, disease/illness, identity, autobiographical narrative and internet. Then, realize an analysis from a netnographic view, of five Brazilian blogs of people with chronic disease condition (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, diabetes and Fabry disease). This Blogs are presented not only as a space for writing from personal experience, but as a political place and resistance, not only positioning of bloggers who write them but as a role model for your readers.
