Despite the increase in demand for this service, there are few researches to ground this practice. Behavior Analysis is a multidimensional field of knowledge, which object of study is behavior. It has well developed body of basic and advanced research and theoreticalphilosophical axis, and it has also produced a set of technologies for behavioral change. This thesis aims, in general, to discuss and this intervention practice through the optical lens of Behavior Analysis. More specifically, the thesis consists of a brief discussion of coaching and behavior analysis and presentation of three studies. Study 1 aimed to discuss the effectiveness of coaching using traditional measurements (scales and inventories), but using single subject design, respecting tradition in Behavior Analysis when delineating studies. Also, a second goal was to verify the effectiveness of the To do technique/tool, often used by those who work with coaching. Study 2 is a case study aimed to verify the effectiveness of coaching, conducted by a behavior analyst, to develop and/or maintain behaviors which prepare the individual for retirement, as in having career plans, financial reserve, care for relationships which can support her in old age (such as family, emotional and social relationships) and health care. Study 3 is a case study aimed to assess the effectiveness of coaching, conducted by a behavior analyst, to develop autonomy of thought or the Tracking kind of behavior. These studies had as participant two clients who were looking for coaching service, one behavior analyst coaching professional, and an external observer. The interventions consisted of ten individual coaching meetings for each client. In such meetings, the objectives of each client were discussed and individualized interventions were performed in order to handle contingencies that established and/or maintained behaviors related to coaching objectives. To measure result, different measurement were used, from conventional such as scales and inventories (e. g. BDI, STAI, etc.) to direct measurements of the evolution of behavior occurring during coaching meetings. The results of the studies indicated that coaching conducted by an behavior analyst was effective for both clients irrespective of the means of measurement used, both if resorting to comparison of results of traditional scoring instruments obtained before and after coaching (Study 1), as through measurements derived from direct observations. The interventions were effective in promoting both the engagement for retirement (Study 2) and the freedom of thought (Study 3). In addition, Study 1 presents evidence that the To the technique /tool is effective in evoking behaviors related to coaching objectives, that is, commitment / Coaching tem sido uma prática de intervenção crescente no Brasil e no restante do mundo.

Huang, Ann X., Jia, Meixiang, Wheeler, John J. 01 January 2013 (has links)
Since the late 1970s, special education in the People’s Republic of China has experienced significant reform and fast development. However, education for children with severe developmental disabilities, especially autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), is still the greatest challenge in the field. This paper aims to give readers an overview of what is happening to children with ASDs in China. We first address the issue of prevalence of ASDs, and then offer an introduction to the diagnostic process. After that, a review of disability-related legislation is provided, followed by a description of current treatment options and available educational services. Finally we introduce all extent service providers and their roles.

An Efficiency Evaluation of Procedures to Evoke Vocalizations in Children with Autism

Diaz, Alejandro Rene 11 June 2018 (has links)
Development of vocalizations in early learners with autism is critical to the acquisition of verbal behavior and other important life skills. The purpose of the present studies was to (1) evaluate the efficiency and efficacy of Stimulus-Stimulus Pairing (SSP) and standard Echoic Training (ET) procedures for the development and onset of verbal behavior in early learners with ASD to improve early intervention efficiency and (2) elucidate predictive characteristics or variables for the effective use of SSP. The present studies were comprised of a multiple-baseline (across behaviors) experimental design buttressed within a reversal design, also known more broadly as within-subject controlled experimental designs. It was found that SSP can have a greater treatment efficacy than ET, but any efficacy advantage is transitory. Shifting an SSP treatment to direct reinforcement contingencies once vocalizations are produced are likely the most effective strategy. SSP produces discrepant effects across learners, thus highlighting the need to assess a learner’s characteristics and assumed reinforcer effectiveness. It was also found that higher-functioning learners will benefit more greatly from ET as opposed to SSP.

No. of bitstreams: 1 DissBKM.pdf: 1169423 bytes, checksum: 39b613f01adf2eeb7d14a31a1eae9b0d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-02-20 / Não recebi financiamento / Pain disorders are usually related to lower level of general health, quality of life and poores work performance. Brazilian studies show that pain disorders have been described as the second or third leading cause of absence from work. Therefore this replication study was conducted to evaluate a brief intervention program developed by Nash et al (2004) that could be implemented in companies or organizations, which would represent an important advance in dealing with this problem. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a brief intervention protocol, using behavioral and cognitive-behavioral techniques for administrative employees with chronic pain diagnoses. The impacts were evaluated along three dimensions: 1) self-perception of both pain and work impacts; 2) mental health indicators, including measures of depression, anxiety and stress; and 3) measures of functionality and quality of life. The study included five public service workers, between 36 and 61 years of age. Three women had been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, one with Migraines and the other with neuritis. Time since diagnosis ranged from 2 to 7 years. The intervention was programmed using a multiple baseline procedure in four phases: 1) Baseline; 2) Module 1 (Psychoeducation about pain processes); 3) Module 2 (Relaxation Techniques); and 3) Module 3 (Stress and coping strategies). During the Initial Evaluations and over the course of the intervention, the following instrumentes were used: General Interview, Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults - Lipp (ISSL), Beck Depression and Anxietyies Inventory, FAST and the WHOQOL-BREF Scale. The Individual records showed a correlation between the intensity of pain and effectiveness in working conditions in general (r = 0.86, p <0.001) and for each of the participants. It was possible to observe the effect of the intervention at different times, for all participants. Initially, all participants had health care needs related to stress (four presented scores of resistance and one of almost exhaustion). Two had health care needs related to depression (P4 and P6) and two had process related to anxiety (P2 and P4). One participant (P4) had health care needs on all three measures. With regards to functionality, three respondents reported having difficulty in performing cognitive activities and one of the participants reported having difficulties in both controlling money and managing daily financial routines. The participants had average scores close to 50 points in the four areas assessed by the WHOQOL-BREF. Following the intervention, three of the five subjects had an increase in their total score for quality of life. Four participants also reported less difficulty with functionality, considering all the domains evaluated, with better performance observed in the autonomy domain. The strong points of the protocol were discussed along with challenges in its execution. Further research are needed to.

Efeitos de uma intervenção cognitivo-comportamental sobre fatores de risco e qualidade de vida em pacientes cardíacos / Effects from a intervention cognitive - behavior on the subject of suit as of exposure AND brand as of life well into patients cardiac

Juliana Camargo Vilela 11 April 2008 (has links)
Cardiovascular diseases are presented as a major cause of death and disability in actuality. These changes include coronary artery disease or ischemic etiology and present multi-factorial. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a cognitive-behavioral intervention on quality of life, depression, anxiety and under risk factors in ischemic patients who had shown an episode of acute illness in the last three months. Study participants were 71 patients, who were divided into two groups; control (n = 35) and experimental (n = 36) and evaluated in three times: soon after the first contact with researcher; after 14 weeks (revaluation) and after six months (follow up). In assessments the patients responded to a structured interview, the inventory quality of life of the World Health Organization (WHOQUOL), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the anxiety of Beck Inventory (BAI). The experimental group was subjected to a program of cognitive-behavioral intervention, between the top two ratings. This program has been structured into eight weekly group sessions, with duration of two hours each. During the sessions were worked techniques of management of anxiety, relaxation and visualization, techniques for solving problems and discussed information about heart disease and its risk factors. Among the participants, the majority were male, had more than 55 years, was married, had studied for a maximum period of ten years and were retired. With respect to sociodemographic data, no statistical differences were found between the two groups. There was a significant decrease in body weight and body mass index among the subjects of the experimental group in the course of the evaluations, as well as an increase in the number of leisure activities. The results also suggest a decrease in depressive symptoms of patients in the experimental group in relation to the control group, and following the revaluation, and an improvement in the quality of life of the experimental group in the course of progressive evaluations, which was not observed with respect the control group. It is considered that the programme of cognitive-behavioral intervention showed positive results in the rehabilitation of patients ischemic and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease, promoting physical and emotional changes important.

Discipline Problems Related to IDEA 1997 for Special Education Students During 1999-2000

Shumate, Carolynn Bissett 27 January 2003 (has links)
The two research questions that guided this qualitative, descriptive case study were: 1. What staff development and training occurred since IDEA 1997 and what would be recommended in the future in a selected Virginia school district regarding the discipline problems of students with disabilities. 2. How had one Virginia school district responded, implemented and resolved disciplinary problems (including barriers) as related to IDEA 1997 for specific students with disabilities who were in need of disciplinary measures during the 1999-2000 school year? The seven selected students with disabilities were chosen based on their disciplinary actions as related to five interview guide questions that focused on some new IDEA 1997 disciplinary regulations. Sources came from a review of formal and informal records, interviews, observations, and follow-up based on data analysis. These questions dealt with the disciplinary issues involving: 1. Multiple short-term removals. 2. Change of placements. 3. Interim alternative settings. 4. Removal for more than ten days. 5. Disciplinary change of placement. 6. Discipline whereas a functional assessment and behavioral implementation plans, strategies and supports were reviewed for students with disabilities in need of disciplinary action. Themes, patterns and recommendations were given at the school district and at the state level. Recommendations for further study were made. Within this school district, three surfaced themes as part of lessons learned were noted. These themes were a) the revolving door of homebound placement, b) monitor and compliance issues, and c) documentation concerns for students with disabilities as mandated by IDEA 1997. Ten patterns were noted as related to the seven students with disabilities due to their disciplinary actions. All seven students with disabilities had a long history of special education placements, attendance problems and were recommended for counseling. Six of these student's parents were minimally involved with their child's progress. Six of these students were drug involved. Positive interventions, strategies and supports were utilized for five of these students when receiving disciplinary consequences. Five of these students with disabilities had other difficult family issues. Four of these students with disabilities were court involved while one student was involved with the community services board. Three students had work experiences and three students had low to average intelligence. Other noteworthy considerations involving climate and culture, money and safety were discussed. / Ed. D.

The Effects Of The Attainment Of Functional Assessment Skills By Preschool Teachers And Their Assistants On Students' Classr

Wagner, Karen 01 January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teaching functional assessment skills to three Prekindergarten teachers and their teaching assistants. The effects were measured by examining the behavior of the teachers and assistants, as well as the behaviors of the students; before, during and after the delivery of three, two-hour functional assessment classes. The teaching staff videotaped themselves and their students during a regular class time, predetermined by the researcher and each teacher prior to the onset of baseline data collection, over an approximate nine-week period. The video was taken in twelve-minute segments every day. Later, the video was coded for specific behaviors. Although there were gains in appropriate intervention strategies from teachers and assistants during the intervention phase, the interventions generally peaked a week or two after the classes ended and gradually declined. Teacher skills were retained however, as most ratios of appropriate interventions maintained at higher rates than baseline. Relationships between student behavior and correct teacher interventions were established and maintained. The intervention resulted in changes in staff behavior, but results did not sustain at high levels over time. The realization that escape maintained some student behavior, and teaching skills to "test" for function, were likely the most important concepts for many of the participants. Further research should include adding a behavior coach to assist in shaping the teaching staffs' emerging skills and to provide a sounding board when developing specific student interventions.
