Cette thèse étudie pour la première fois les pratiques langagières de la communauté grandissante des immigrés égyptiens en France. L’analyse morphosyntaxique a comme cadre la théorie insertionnelle Matrix Language Frame de Myers-Scotton (1993, 1997 et 2000). Nous constatons que les Égyptiens de la première génération recourent à l’alternance codique sans s’en rendre compte ou sans le reconnaître tandis que ceux de la deuxième génération sont conscients des caractéristiques linguistiques nées du contact des langues. De plus, la femme égyptienne, avec son rôle de maintien de l’arabe auprès de ses enfants, trouve sa féminité dans l’apprentissage du français et par conséquent elle joue un rôle important dans la pratique de l’alternance codique au sein de la famille. Les raisons de l’alternance codique chez les Égyptiens sont variées, par exemple : la citation ou le discours rapporté ; la désignation d’un interlocuteur en faisant intégrer à un groupe un interlocuteur tenu à l’écart ; l’humour qui caractérise notamment les Égyptiens de la première génération ; la spontanéité et la précision en optant directement pour le lexème le plus immédiatement disponible, même s’il est dans une langue différente par rapport au reste de la communication. Nos informateurs de la première génération ont recours aux procédés morphologiques pour simplifier l’usage des mots français ayant des sons qui n’existent pas en arabe égyptien ou ceux qui se composent de plus de trois syllabes. Nous exploitons les caractéristiques de ce contact des langues pour aider les élèves égyptiens nouvellement arrivés à réussir leur scolarité et s’intégrer dans la société française via la maîtrise du français. / This thesis analyses for the first time the language practices of the growing community of Egyptian immigrants in France. The morphosyntactical analysis is made in the framework of insertional theory Matrix Language Frame of Myers-Scotton (1993, 1997 and 2000). We find that the Egyptians of the first generation resort to code switching without realizing it or recognizing it while those of second generation are aware of the linguistic characteristics of the language contact. Furthermore, the Egyptian woman, with her role of maintaining Arabic with her children, finds her femininity in learning French and therefore she plays an important role in the practice of code switching within the family. The reasons of the code switching in the Egyptian community are varied, for example, the quotation or the reported speech ; the designation of an interlocutor by integrating into a group an interlocutor kept apart ; the humor that particularly characterizes the Egyptians of the first generation ; the spontaneity and the precision by opting directly for the most immediately available lexeme even if it is in a different language than the rest of the communication. Our informants of the first generation use morphological procedures to simplify the use of French words having sounds that don’t exist in Egyptian Arabic or those that consist of more than three syllables. We use the characteristics of this language contact to help Egyptian students newlly arrived to succeed in their schooling and integrate into the French society through the mastering of French language.

La tesi si concentra sugli influssi lessicali che le lingue indiane hanno esercitato sulla lingua inglese sia in prospettiva diacronica sia sincronica. La prima parte dell'elaborato indaga, tramite l'impiego di uno strumento lessicografico, l'Oxford English Dictionary edizione on-line, la presenza in inglese di prestiti veri e propri, ma anche di derivati e composti, sorti in seguito al contatto tra l'inglese le lingue indiane a partire dal Sedicesimo secolo e fino ai nostri giorni, arrivando a individuare 1791 forme lessicali. La seconda parte intende verificare l'effettiva presenza, la frequenza d'uso e il significato di tali prestiti, composti e derivati nel British English contemporaneo, avvalendosi degli strumenti offerti dalla linguistica dei corpora. Il corpus di riferimento impiegato in questa seconda fase della ricerca è Bank of English. L'elaborato, oltre a delineare lo scenario storico culturale di riferimento, mette in evidenza le procedure metodologiche impiegate, e ricostruisce l'impianto teorico sulle questioni di interferenze tra codici linguistici, lingue in contatto e prestiti lessicali, riferendosi ai maggiori e più recenti studi in materia. / The research focuses on lexical influences exerted by Indian languages on British English as a result of linguistic contacts between Great Britain and India. Both diachronic and synchronic perspectives are taken into consideration in evaluating the extent of such lexical influences. The first part of the research analyses the presence of words of East Indian origin in English by means of the Oxford English Dictionary, on-line edition, be these words authentic lexical borrowings, or derivatives or compounds arisen as a consequence of such linguistic contacts. The historical period taken into consideration goes from the 16th century till nowadays. The second part of the research aims to verify the actual presence, frequency of usage and meaning of such words in contemporary British English by means of a linguistic corpora tool, namely the Bank of English by Harper Collins. The historical and cultural background of the relationships between Great Britain and India, as well as the theoretical background about linguistic interferences as a whole are also illustrated, with reference to the most authoritative and recent studies.

Girls' Education as a Means or End of Development? A Case Study of Gender and Education Policy Knowledge and Action in the GambiaManion, Caroline 31 August 2011 (has links)
Girls’ education has been promoted by the international development community for over two decades; however, it has proven harder to promote gender equality through education than it has been to promote gender parity in education. Of significance is the global circulation and co-existence of two competing rationales for the importance of girls’ education: economic efficiency and social justice. The cost of ignoring how and why Southern governments and their development partners choose to promote girls’ education is high: an over-emphasis on economic efficiency can mean that the root causes of gendered inequalities in society remain unchallenged, and more social justice-oriented reforms become marginalized.
This thesis uses a critical feminist lens to qualitatively investigate the role and significance of human capital, human rights, and human capabilities policy models in the context of the production and enactment of gender equality in education policy knowledge in The Gambia, a small, aid-dependent Muslim nation in West Africa. The purpose of the study was to assess the scope education policies provide for positive change in the lives of Gambian women and girls. Towards illuminating relations of power in and the politics of gender equality in education policy processes, the study compares and contrasts written texts with the perspectives of state and non-state policy actors. The study is based on data drawn from interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis.
The findings suggest that different gender equality in education ideas and practices have been selectively mobilized and incorporated into education policy processes in The Gambia. At the level of policy talk, girls’ education is framed as important for both national economic growth, and “women’s empowerment”. However, the policy solutions designed and implemented, with the support of donors, have tended to work with rather than against the status quo. Power and politics was evident in divergent interpretations and struggles to fix the meaning of key concepts such as gender, gender equality, gender equity, and empowerment. Religious beliefs, anti-feminist politics, and the national feminist movement were identified as important forces shaping gender equality in education knowledge and action in the country.

Indirect Influence of English on Kiswahili: The Case of Multiword Duplicates between Kiswahili and EnglishOchieng, Dunlop 22 October 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Some proverbs, idioms, nominal compounds, and slogans duplicate in form and meaning between several languages. An example of these between German and English is Liebe auf den ersten Blick and “love at first sight” (Flippo, 2009), whereas, an example between Kiswahili and English is uchaguzi ulio huru na haki and “free and fair election.” Duplication of these strings of words between languages that are as different in descent and typology as Kiswahili and English is irregular. On this ground, Kiswahili academies and a number of experts of Kiswahili assumed – prior to the present study – that the Kiswahili versions of the expressions are the derivatives from their English congruent counterparts. The assumption nonetheless lacked empirical evidence and also discounted other potential causes of the phenomenon, i.e. analogical extension, nativism and cognitive metaphoricalization (Makkai, 1972; Land, 1974; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980b; Ruhlen, 1987; Lakoff, 1987; Gleitman and Newport, 1995). Out of this background, we assumed an academic obligation of empirically investigating what causes this formal and semantic duplication of strings of words (multiword expressions) between English and Kiswahili to a degree beyond chance expectations.
In this endeavour, we employed checklist to 24, interview to 43, online questionnaire to 102, translation test to 47 and translationality test to 8 respondents. Online questionnaire respondents were from 21 regions of Tanzania, whereas, those of the rest of the tools were from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Lindi, Dodoma and Kigoma. Complementarily, we analysed the Chemnitz Corpus of Swahili (CCS), the Helsinki Swahili Corpus (HSC), and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) for clues on the sources and trends of expressions exhibiting this characteristic between Kiswahili and English. Furthermore, we reviewed the Bible, dictionaries, encyclopaedia, books, articles, expressions lists, wikis, and phrase books in pursuit of etymologies, and histories of concepts underlying the focus expressions.
Our analysis shows that most of the Kiswahili versions of the focus expressions are the function of loan translation and rendition from English. We found that economic, political and technological changes, mostly induced by liberalization policy of the 1990s in Tanzania, created lexical gaps in Kiswahili that needed to be filled. We discovered that Kiswahili, among other means, fill such gaps through loan translation and loan rendition of English phrases. Prototypical examples of notions whose English labels Kiswahili has translated word for word are such as “human rights”, “free and fair election”, “the World Cup” and “multiparty democracy”. We can conclude that Kiswahili finds it easier and economical to translate the existing English labels for imported notions rather than innovating original labels for the concepts.
Even so, our analysis revealed that a few of the Kiswahili duplicate multiword expressions might be a function of nativism, cognitive metaphoricalization and analogy phenomena. We, for instance, observed that formulation of figurative meanings follow more or less similar pattern across human languages – the secondary meanings deriving from source domains. As long as the source domains are common in many human\'s environment, we found it plausible for certain multiword expressions to spontaneously duplicate between several human languages.
Academically, our study has demonstrated how multiword expressions, which duplicate between several languages, can be studied using primary data, corpora, documentary review and observation. In particular, the study has designed a framework for studying sources of the expressions and even terminologies for describing the phenomenon. What\'s more, the study has collected a number of expressions that duplicate between Kiswahili and English languages, which other researchers can use in similar studies.

A amostra foi composta pelos leitores que frequentam, como também os que deixaram de frequentar o Setor de Empréstimo da BJMJr, localizada no bairro Rio Vermelho, na cidade de Salvador-BA. Durante a investigação, foi realizada a pesquisa aplicada em nível descritivo com abordagem metodológica de natureza quanti-qualitativa, no intuito de mapear, analisar e identificar os dados coletados por meio dos questionários aplicados com 32 (trinta e dois) idosos. O presente estudo inclui fundamentação teórica e suas relações no contexto social da Ciência da Informação, tendo como hipótese a dificuldade de locomoção possuir função causadora do decréscimo na frequência de usuários na biblioteca pública supracitada. Como resultado observou-se o interesse dos leitores por este serviço e a sugestão de que o Sistema de Biblioteca Pública Estadual desenvolva áreas dedicadas à inovação dos seus serviços e produtos. / ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to investigate whether elderly readers from the Circulation/Borrowing Section of Biblioteca Juracy Magalhães Junior (Juracy Magalhães Junior Library) have interest in the use of the system/service of delivery when borrowing book, bearing in mind innovation in public library, as a community outreach service. The data was composed by readers who are regular visitors and those who stopped visiting the Circulation/Borrowing Section of Biblioteca Juracy Magalhães Junior, located in Rio Vermelho, a neighborhood of Salvador, a city in the State of Bahia, in Brazil. During investigation, a survey was applied, in descriptive level, using quantitative-qualitative methodological approach and aiming the mapping, analysis and identification of the data collected from the questionnaires given to 32 elderly people. The current study includes theoretical basis and its connections to social context and Information Science, bringing the hypothesis for how mobility limitation might generate a decrease in the frequency of those readers in the library aforementioned. As result, it was observed the interest of readers in the delivery service, and the suggestion for the Sistema de Biblioteca Pública Estadual (State Public Library System, a state department responsible for the administration of public libraries) to develop areas dedicated to the innovation of service and products.

Ce travail de recherche porte dans sa première partie, sur la situation linguistique du Liban, sur la volonté d’étudier la place que la langue française y occupe par rapport aux autres langues en présence, notamment par rapport à l’anglais. Au-delà du contexte, nous présentons aussi dans cette première le corpus suivi du cadre théorique et méthodologique. Pour ce faire, nous avons fait appel dans le cadre théorique aux procédés linguistiques tels que l’emprunt linguistique, l’alternance codique, le calque et l’interférence, ainsi qu’à des concepts sociolinguistiques essentiels, pour montrer comment l’auteur revendique sa langue source à travers la langue d’écriture, dont, entre autres, l’imaginaire linguistique/culturel et les représentations sociales. Dans la deuxième partie, on met en exergue le phénomène du contact des langues et leurs usages au sein de la société libanaise qui a engendré des parlers hybrides comme, entre autres, le franbanais. Par ailleurs, cette étude peut affirmer l’ancrage de la culture et de la langue française au Liban. Quant à la troisième partie de la thèse, elle est consacrée à l’étude socio-sémiotique des articles et des dessins, extraits du journal l’OLJ, dans le but de montrer comment les différentes langues et cultures se nouent de façon harmonieuse dans la presse libanaise et comment chaque langue possède ses particularités langagières liées aux représentations culturelles de la communauté linguistique qui en fait usage. Concrètement l’analyse porte sur les articles de la journaliste Azouri ainsi que les commentaires qui accompagnent les dessins de la dessinatrice Phares. Quant aux dessins, nous avons procédé par une étude sémiotique pour les analyser dans un rapport texte/image. Ainsi, nous avons convoqué les théories de Laurence Bardin, Martine Joly et Roland Barthes, qui prennent en considération l’aspect symbolique et polysémique de l’image visuelle ainsi que les dimensions idéologiques et culturelles du récepteur. Notre travail de recherche, qui se situe donc à la croisée de différentes disciplines, se propose de mettre l’accent sur les dimensions socioculturelles dans le décryptage d’un message donné. / This research concerns, in its first part, the linguistic situation in Lebanon and the ability to analyze the position of the French language in relation to the other existing languages, in particular English. Beyond the context, we will also present the corpus followed by the rhetorical framework and the methodology. For this purpose, we relied on linguistic processes like linguistic borrowing, code-switching, calque and interference as well as central socio-linguistic concepts, in order to show how the author claims his original language through written language, including among others, the linguistic/cultural imagination and social representations. The second part emphasizes the phenomena of language contact and its use in Lebanese society, which has generated hybrid languages like “franbanais”. Furthermore, this work could prove the anchoring of the French culture and language in Lebanon. The third part of this thesis is devoted to the socio-semiotic study of articles and pictures, extracted from the OLJ journal, in order to show how different languages and cultures connect harmoniously in Lebanese media and how every language possesses its linguistic particularities related to the cultural representations of the linguistic community speaking that language. This review is concretely about the articles written by the journalist Azouri as well as the commentaries accompanied by pictures drawn by Phares. Regarding the pictures, we proceeded by a semiotic study in order to analyze the rapport between the text and the picture. Then, we convened the theories of Laurence Basin, Martine Holy and Roland Barthes, who take into consideration the symbolic and the polysemic aspect of the picture as well as the ideologic and cultural dimension of the receiver. Our research, which crosses different disciplines, proposes to emphasize the socio-cultural dimensions in the decryption of a presented message.

La question des emprunts lexicaux dans le Coran est l’une des premières questions linguistiques posées au commencement de la pensée linguistique arabe. Pourtant, cette question n’a pas connu le même développement qu’ont connu les autres questions linguistiques. C’est qu’elle était toujours un objet de désaccord entre les savants et les chercheurs ; certains ont nié la présence d’emprunts lexicaux dans le Coran, d’autres l’ont admise. Dans les études anciennes et contemporaines, nous avons pu distinguer deux approches: la première est d’ordre linguistique. Elle considère le Coran comme un texte langagier. En effet, les linguistes ont étudié les emprunts coraniques dans leurs caractères phonologiques, morphologiques, syntaxiques et sémantiques. Alors que la seconde est plutôt idéologique. Elle prend une position non objective, en niant complètement la présence d’emprunts lexicaux dans le Coran, ou en glorifiant une langue mère par des motivations nationalistes, religieuses, sociales et culturelles. Après avoir étudié le développement, l’interférence et l’interaction entre ces approches, nous avons proposé notre position sociolinguistique pour élaborer des critères d’identification de nature linguistique, référentielle et culturelle. Ces critères nous ont aidé à dégager deux corpus : le premier contient les emprunts coraniques et leurs langues sources, le deuxième comprend les unités lexicales que nous considérons comme des unités arabes. Ce travail nous a permis de mettre en lumière les motivations idéologiques qui peuvent influencer l’étude linguistique. De même il est un outil pour prendre conscience de la nécessité d’une révision critique des approches qui ont traité les emprunts lexicaux en général et les emprunts coraniques en particulier. / The issue of “lexical borrowings in The Quran” is one of the first issues that had emerged since the beginning of the Arabic linguistic thought. Unfortunately, this issue was fruitless compared to other linguistic researches, because it has always been a subject of a great polemic among ancient and modern Arabic and non Arabic scholars. Some denied the fact that The Quran contains lexical borrowings, others admitted it. Many scholars were pushed by ideological motivations such as religious, nationalist, social, cultural motivations, especially those who denied the phenomenon.In this work, we tried first to evoke main linguistic and extra- linguistic problems concerning lexical borrowing in general, and the study of this phenomenon in the Quran especially. Then, we studied the two main approaches: (1) ideological approach which denies the existence of lexical borrowings in the Quran, or which admits it and tries meanwhile to glorify some languages and dishonour some others, (linguistic approach and its phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic analyses. After studying different approaches and their development, interference and interaction, we have elaborated a socio-linguistic perspective associated with some linguistic, referential and cultural criteria which allowed us to distinguish between two types of quranic words: words that we consider as real lexical borrowings, and genuine Arabic words. This study does not only shed the light on some ideological motivations which have affected linguistic research, but it also provides a crucial critical review of borrowing studies.

En se fondant sur un corpus de cérémonies rituelles d’ombwiri collecté dans deux provinces du Gabon, cette thèse discute la pertinence des concepts anthropologiques couramment appliqués aux religions africaines dans leur évolution contemporaine, en particulier ceux dérivant de théories «syncrétistes». Partant d’une méthodologie confrontant les données de terrain aux interprétations qui en ont été tirées par les chercheurs qui ont étudié les rituels religieux du Gabon, l’auteur en arrive à contester la qualité des productions scientifiques consacrées au sujet, considérant que les perspectives développées jusque-là privilégient la seule dimension diachronique des emprunts culturels, font la part belle aux intégrations minoritaires d’éléments occidentaux dans l’invention rituelle traditionnelle, et escamotent finalement le ressort créatif permanent qui rend la production des rituels possible, y compris dans leur intégration d’éléments nouveaux, dussent-ils provenir de l’étranger. Pour cela, il propose le concept alternatif de «correspondances interreligieuses» pour rendre compte de la libre possibilité d’intégrer, à tout moment, et dans des proportions cognitivement encadrées, des éléments de tradition exogène. Il évite ainsi de retomber dans les pièges du colonialisme scientifique qui ne peut s’empêcher d’aliéner la culture colonisée en lui imposant le carcan théorique d’une culture colonisatrice. / Based on an intensive field work related to ombwiri rituals performed in two provinces of Gabon, this dissertation discusses the relevance of common theorisation of African contemporary religions as expressions of syncretism. The author considers that syncretism cannot be applied unilaterally to African rituals, as it might only emphasize the diachronic level in cultural and linguistic borrowing, without outlying the synchronic one which makes the borrowing even possible. More consequently, syncretist theorisation neglects fundamental aspects of ritual creativity and specific empowerment to integrate what it likes or not, including outdoor elements resulting from historical and particularly cross-cultural conjunctions. Therefore, the author suggests to start up with a new conceptual framework of “interreligious correspondences”, so as to prevent scientific productions from colonial recurrent ideologies, and give evidence of cognitive mechanisms which habilitate African minds as others, to go on integrating new with old, extraordinary with ordinary, and all kinds of resources, in a permanent creative dynamism including the indefinite limit that one likes to give to oneself.
