Media and Corporate Social Responsibility: How Leading Business Magazines Frame a Controversial Concept

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an emerging concept that continues to play a controversial role in the business world. Different CSR theories and ethical foundations inform different approaches to embedding socially responsible behavior into today's business functions. As technology, globalization, and economic challenges change the corporate world, the meaning and application of CSR also changes. While no empirical evidence of CSR's impact on performance exists, many corporations operate under the assumption that CSR holds significant value. This study examines the framing of CSR in stories published by leading business magazines between 2008 and 2012. By examining the presentation of CSR concepts, the resulting analysis can provide important conclusions for corporations, public relations practitioners, mass media, and consumers. This study resulted in a hierarchical pyramid of frames that organizes the framing of CSR in business magazines into three layers: category, motivation, and classification as either responsible behavior or irresponsible behavior. These results lead to recommendations for future CSR research, including the need for quantitative evidence of a connection or disconnection between CSR and profitability.

Aktierekommendationer : En jämförelse av aktierekommendationer mellan banker och affärstidningar / Stock Recommendations : A comparison of stock recommendations between Banks and Business Magazines

Bakgrund: Det har i tidigare forskningar bevisats att privatpersoner har en tendens att vilja få hög avkastning på kort tid och därför väljer de ofta att investera i aktier. Detta leder till att aktierekommendationer har en stor påverkan på de privatpersoner som vill investera i aktier utan att ha en god kunskap inom ämnet. Det har även visats i olika undersökningar att privatpersoner i majoritet har lägre tillit för affärstidningar än för banker. Syfte: Syftet med denna undersökning är att undersöka banker och affärstidningarnas utfall av aktierekommendationer på den svenska aktiemarknaden. Genomförande: En kvantitativ undersökning genomfördes, där vi valde fyra olika banker och fyra olika affärstidningar. Tidsperioden var tre år, mellan 2010-01-01 och 2012-12-31. Totalt undersöktes 617 köp- och säljrekommendationer under fyra olika perioder; en dag, fem dagar, tio dagar och 30 dagar efter publiceringsdatumet. Resultat: Resultatet av undersökningen antyder på att det finns en skillnad mellan banker och affärstidningar gällande träffsäkerheten på dess publicerade aktierekommendationer. Affärstidningarna har högre antal träffar än bankerna, både när det gäller säljrekommendationer och köprekommendationer. / Background: It has been shown in previous researches that individuals have a tendency to want to get high returns in a short time and therefore often choose to invest in stocks. Stock recommendations have therefore a large impact on the individuals who want to invest in stocks without having good knowledge of the subject. It has also been shown in various studies that the majority of individuals have lower trust in business magazines than for banks. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the banks and the business magazines outcome of the stock recommendations of the Swedish stock market. Method: A quantitative study was conducted, in which we chose four different banks and four different business magazines. The time period was three years, between 2010-01-01 and 2012-12-31. A total of 617 stock recommendations were investigated during four different periods; one day, five days, ten days and 30 days after the date of publication. Conclusion: The study results indicate that there is a difference between banks and business magazines regarding the accuracy of the published stock recommendations. Business magazines have a higher number of hits than the banks, both in terms of sales recommendations and purchase recommendations.

從過去對於經濟新聞與閱聽人的研究,得知一般人對於經濟論題認知不足 ,而且對於經濟知識的了解,也多來自於傳播媒介的報導,可見媒介是閱 聽大眾經濟消息的重要來源,同時在長期下,也模塑了閱聽大眾對於經濟 情勢的觀點。既然媒介常成為一般人對經濟事務的了解來源,商業雜誌─ ─專門針對經濟事項報導而設計的媒介──則具有重要地位。由於雜誌的 深入報導的特性:不僅呈現事件發生的原因,同時加以分析,使雜誌成為 了解一事件全貌的重要傳播通路;以經濟題材為主要報導的專業商業雜誌 ,更是傳達經濟見解到其他對同類問題有興趣者之最佳工具。商業雜誌究 竟如何塑造帶有政治色彩的兩岸經貿互動關係?此一議題在本文之前尚未 有人探討。根據本文的研究,商業雜誌的報導內容如對照客觀真實(發展 背景、兩岸貿易額與台商大陸投資額變動數據),大致反映真實的情況; 換言之,商業雜誌對於兩岸經貿的發展過程的描述並未失真,商業雜誌在 該項議題報導上是扮演著「鏡子」的角色。至於「塑造者」角色,本研究 由於僅針對商業雜誌的內容分析,並未對其閱聽眾進行調查,無法得知商 業雜誌對受眾的認知影響情形,僅能依據該報導內容與真實之間差異情形 進行推估。按本文的推論,商業雜誌在報導兩岸經貿互動關係之各項論題 時,與客觀之社會資料在時間序列上相似,並且不易區分兩者在時間變動 上的先後次序。以Rosengren(1981)提出的「文化與社會結構關係類型 」模式解釋,商業雜誌與社會結構之間的關係,可能彼此「相互依賴」, 商業雜誌對於兩岸經貿議題的報導,應是同時也扮演著「塑造者」的角色 。從本文的分析結果,印證媒介內容在長期之下對於閱聽人認知極可能有 一定程度的影響,尤其當受眾對於兩岸經貿議題缺乏親身經歷時。同時本 文也證實經濟性的專業雜誌對於經濟議題的報導上,充分發揮雜誌的特殊 個性。正因為商業雜誌「敘述兼評論」──深入報導風格,對於兩岸經貿 報導角度更需格外謹慎。

Firemní časopis, případová studie / Business magazine, a case study

The thesis describes business magazines in the Czech Republic, association of publishers, national awards, specialized publishing agencies. Special attention is focused on surveys of business magazines that have been carried out up to now. The situation on the market of business magazines in Great Britain is briefly described for comparison purpose. As an example of a present-day business magazine, the B2B periodical called Elit magazín was selected. To describe the way of its production, a half-structured interview was carried out. To describe the opinion on the side of the producing company a structured interview was carried out, for description of the readers'opinion a questionnaire survey was chosen. The output is the comparison of both opinions. Because the producing company is a part of multinational company, where some other countries produce business magazines as well, a mapping of time-proven solution of the Volvo Trucks multinational company magazine named Globetrotter Czech is carried out. The corpus is composed by texts whose themes are related to the environmentalism, enounced by Exame, IstoÉ Dinheiro and Época Negócios magazines published in 2010, that modalize the executive-readers. The goal of this research is to understand how the enunciators semiotically act to plug the hole in the liberal-capitalist discourse, which was left exposed by the antagonists factions that struggle by hegemony on the environmentalist field. Our thesis points that this operation promotes a sintomal inversion and, thus, in the weaker point of the hegemonic discourse s symbolic equivalence net the environment declared in crisis the enunciators build as a nodal point the sustainability , this positivized reverse. The system of production and consumption is re-signified by this inversion: instead of the cause of the environmental crises in the present it becomes the propitiator of a green and clean world in the future. About the methodology of research, it is based on the post-structural discourse analysis of Laclau, Mouffe, i ek, Howarth and Stavrakakis; on the dialogue with the French current of discourse analysis (AD), from authors as Maingueneau, Pêcheux and Ducrot; and on the aggregation of contemporary political philosophy elements proposed by Rancière, Agamben and Latour, between others. For a reflexion about the ecologist movements, it is specially based on authors that prioritize the political and discursive point of view, like Alier, Leff and Dryzek. The expectation to this work is that it can contribute to deepen the debate about the environmentalist discursive field politics and about the sustainability discourse, propagated each day more by the media machine / Esta pesquisa investiga como os enunciadores das principais revistas brasileiras de economia e negócios operam com a tensão entre os discursos ambientalistas e os seus contratos de comunicação baseados no liberal-capitalismo. O corpus é composto por textos cujo tema é o meio ambiente, enunciados por Exame, IstoÉ Dinheiro e Época Negócios de 2010, publicações que atuam como modalizadoras do leitor-executivo. O objetivo da pesquisa é compreender como o enunciador atua semioticamente para tamponar o furo no discurso liberal-capitalista deixado exposto pelas correntes antagonistas que disputam a hegemonia no campo discursivo ambientalista. Nossa tese é a de que esta operação promove uma inversão sintomal e, assim, no lugar mais fraco das redes de equivalência simbólica do discurso hegemônico o meio ambiente declarado em crise os enunciadores erigem como ponto nodal a sustentabilidade, seu avesso positivado. O sistema de produção e consumo é ressignificado a partir dessa inversão: de causador da crise ambiental no presente torna-se propiciador de um mundo verde e limpo no futuro. Quanto à metodologia de pesquisa, ela se baseia na análise discursiva pós-estruturalista de Laclau, Mouffe, i ek, Howarth e Stavrakakis; no diálogo com a corrente francesa da Análise de Discurso (AD), em autores como Maingueneau, Pêcheux e Ducrot; e na incorporação de elementos da filosofia política contemporânea proposta por Rancière, Agamben e Latour, entre outros. Coverage of African countries in Pan-African business magazines : evidence of hierarchy in regional news flows

This dissertation examines the flow of economic news in Africa, in order to investigate the potential existence of regional hierarchies in international news flow. The research was based on a framework of theories on international news flow. A quantitative and qualitative content analysis of a sample of news articles published in Africa Investor, African Business and Business in Africa during 2007 and 2008 was analysed. The quantitative results showed that South Africa received the highest level of coverage and was covered to a greater extent than any other African country. The qualitative results indicated that there was clear evidence of regional hierarchy in the coverage of African countries: South Africa received extensive coverage probably due to the fact that it is the largest, most advanced and influential economy in the continent. The study showed that inequality in news coverage is not only a global issue, but also a regional one. / Communication Science / M.A. (International Communication)
