BEFOLKNINGSSKYDDSRUM : Problem med åldrande betongkonstruktioner och möjliga åtgärder med hänsyn till skyddsrumsfunktion och fredsanvändning / PUBLIC SHELTER : Problems with aging of concrete structures and possible measures with regard to shelter function and usage during peace time use

Okla, Maryam January 2022 (has links)
In Sweden, there are about 64,000 shelters in different places in the country. There is a shortage of shelters, and they arenot enough for the entire country's population, but only about 7 million civilians can be accommodated. Shelters havebecome a highly topical topic lately, but the maintenance of these shelters is still neglected. Many of the existing sheltersneed to be renovated or modernized. This thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Ramboll AB in Uppsala withthe aim of developing possible proposals for future upgrades of a population shelter in Katarinaberget in Stockholm andstudying the construction and its associated problems. The work was based on the following questions; what damage isthere in the concrete structures? and what technical solutions are required to ensure the strength of the concrete structures? The result of the work was based on the empirical material consisting of previously completed concrete inspections andtechnical documentations, as well as interviews with some experts in the subject. The results showed that there are severaldifferent types of concrete damage in Katarinaberget's population shelter. It also showed several repair methods to ensurethe construction, the method that is most suitable to use to fix the established concrete damage is the dry spraying method.

Ghasemi, Sara January 2015 (has links)
Accelerated carbonation is a new CO2 storage method under development as a solution for climate change caused by anthropogenic activities. In accelerated carbonation an alkaline source such as minerals or industrial residues react with carbon dioxide in a presence of slightly acidic solution to produce stable solid carbonates. There are varieties of accelerated carbonation routes which differ in process condition.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the potential of a slurry route process and a wet route process for the carbonation of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag using the CO2 emitted by a conventional natural gas power plant.

For this purpose a life cycle assessment (LCA) study was performed based on principles and guidelines provided by ISO 14040:2006 and routines and data provided by the SimaPro v8 software package. The material and energy requirements for each of the steps involved in the carbonation process, i.e. pre-treatment of raw material, CO2 compression, transportation, carbonation step, after-treatment and landfill, were calculated and included in the LCA study.

The slurry and wet route resulted in net CO2 reduction of 87.4% and 72.3% respectively. However, a positive contribution to other environmental issues was observed with the wet route leading to higher impact mainly due to high heating requirement. An exception was contribution of slurry route to abiotic resource depletion, which was higher for the slurry route due to high water requirement. A general conclusion was that the electricity consumption is the main cause of environmental issues. Sensitivity analyses showed that the environmental impacts are dependent on the transportation distance and electricity source, while no dependence was observed with respect to construction of the carbonation plant.

Baidoun, Mia, Al Yabroudi, Haifaa January 2024 (has links)
AbstractThis research suggests that carbonation of concrete can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to limit the 1.5º C rise within the next years. The accelerated carbonation method is of particular interest within the industry. By harnessing industrial flue gases, the carbonation process can be further accelerated. This study aims to assess whether the use of industrial flue gases to accelerate the carbonation of concrete can be economically viable compared to purchasing emission rights. The study is conducted theoretically with a focus on accelerated carbonation in waste management, only investigating industrial flue gases to speed up the carbonation process. Accelerated carbonation, where carbon dioxide is bound in concrete through a faster process than the natural carbonation process. The work demonstrates that the climate conditions of concrete affect carbon dioxide absorption, with outdoor concrete absorbing more carbon dioxide than indoor concrete. Additionally, the study shows that smaller fraction sizes in concrete result in greater carbon dioxide uptake, with the fraction size of 0-4 mm having the highest uptake of 58 kg CO2/ 𝑚3 in an hour. Cost calculations suggest that accelerated carbonation can be a cost-effective method for reducing carbon dioxide emissions compared to other techniques such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU). A difference in investment costs of 9 billion Swedish Crowns was observed, including repairs and maintenance.

Process engineering and development of post-combustion CO2 separation from fuels using limestone in CaO-looping cycle

Kavosh, Masoud January 2011 (has links)
Global CO2 emissions produced by energy-related processes, mainly power plants, have increased rapidly in recent decades; and are widely accepted as the dominant contributor to the greenhouse gas (GHG) effect and consequent climate changes. Among countermeasures against the emissions, CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is receiving much attention. Capture of CO2 is the core step of CCS as it contributes around 75% of the overall cost, and may increase the production costs of electricity by over 50%. The reduction in capture costs is one of the most challenging issues in application of CCS to the energy industry. Using limestone in CaO-looping cycles is a promising capture technology to provide a cost-effective separation process to remove CO2 content from power plants operations. Limestone has the advantage of being relatively abundant and cheap, and that has already been widely used as a sorbent for sulphur capture. However, this technology suffers from a critical challenge caused by the decay in the sorbent capture capacity during cyclic carbonation/calcination, which results in the need for more sorbent make-up; hence a reduction in cost efficiency of the technology. The performance of sorbent influenced by several operating and reaction conditions. Therefore, much research involves investigation of influencing factors and different methods to reduce the sorbent deactivation. Cont/d.

Experimental kinetic study and modeling of calcium oxide carbonation.

Rouchon, Lydie 02 March 2012 (has links)
Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, major contributors to the greenhouse effect, are considered as the main cause of global warming. So, decrease of CO2 emitted by large industrial combustion sources or power plants, is an important scientific goal. One of the approaches is based on CO2 separation and capture from flue gas, followed by sequestration in a wide range of geological formations. In this aim, CO2 is captured by sorbents like calcium oxide (CaO) in multi-cycle process of carbonation/decarbonation. However, it was shown that the most important limitations of such process are related to the reversibility of reaction. CaO rapidly loses activity towards CO2, so the maximum extent of carbonation decreases as long as the number of cycles increases. In order to well understand the processes and parameters influencing the capture capacity of CaO-based sorbents, it appears important to get details on the kinetic law governing the reaction, which have not been really studied up to now. To investigate this reaction, CaO carbonation kinetics was followed by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) on divided materials. Special care was given to the validation of the usual kinetic assumptions such as steady state and rate-determining step assumptions. The aim was to obtain a model describing the reaction in order to explain the influence of intensive variables such as carbonation temperature and CO2 partial pressure. TGA curves obtained under isothermal and isobaric conditions showed an induction period linked to the nucleation process and a strong slowing down of the reaction rate once a given fractional conversion was reached. Both phenomena were observed to depend on carbonation temperature and CO2 partial pressure. To explain these results, the evolution of texture and microstructure of the solid during the reaction was regarded as essential. Reaction at the grain scale induces a volume increase from CaO to CaCO3 which causes a change in the porosity characteristics at the aggregates scale, which could block the access of the gas to the core of aggregates. Temperature jumps during TGA experiments have put in evidence a complex kinetic behavior since three distinct domains must be distinguished, over all the conversion range, whatever the temperature and CO2 pressure could be. The discussion of the results emphasizes the role of the porosity on the kinetic anti-Arrhenius behavior observed in the second domain. So carbonation reaction can be described by a two scales model: at a nonporous grain scale for the chemical reaction and at the aggregate scale, for the CO2 intergranular diffusion. The kinetic modeling, thanks to the software CIN4 (developed in collaboration with Astek), is able to couple both modeling scales in order to explain the kinetic slowing down and the influence of temperature and CO2 partial pressure on the reaction rate.

Etude de cycles calcination/carbonatation lors de la capture de CO2 en lit fluidisé circulant / Study of calcination/carbonation cycles during CO2 capture by circulating fluidised bed

Bouquet, Eric 09 December 2009 (has links)
The works led in this Thesis consisted in developing an experimental pilot proving CO2 capture feasibility by calcium chemical looping using Circulating Fluidised Bed as boilers. These were undertaken in two step: At the laboratory scale with theoretical interpretation of the experimental results and at the pilot scale in the aim to validate the process. The experimental results on the scale of the laboratory allowed to show that the sintering of CaO bring about the decreasing of the carbonation rate during calcination/carbonation cycles. The sintering velocity are accelerated by CO2 during the calcinations step. The analysis of the calcined samples showed a micrograins structure inside the initial carbonate grains The not sintered CaO micrograins are the location of the carbonation reaction.A process of CO2 capture by calcium chemical looping was designed and built. It was made by two circulating fluidized beds, a carbonator where the CO2 capture were performed and the calcinator allowing the lime regeneration. These two circulating fluidized beds are coupled allowing a continuous CO2 capture. In spite of the low capture efficiency obtained on the scale of this pilot (from 18 to 23 %), these results seem encouraging for the development of this technology, considering the fact that many limiting factors of the capture efficiency disappear with the change of scale.

Modelos numéricos aplicados à modelagem probabilística da degradação mecânica do concreto e corrosão de armaduras / Numerical models applied to the probabilistic modelling of the mechanical degradation of concrete and reinforcement corrosion

Coelho, Karolinne Oliveira 06 April 2017 (has links)
The reinforcement\'s corrosion is one of the most common causes of mechanical degradation in reinforced concrete structures. This process leads to the reduction of the service life and, consequently, economic loss. Thereby, this study aims to contribute with the analysis of the phenomena associated to the mechanical degradation of reinforced concrete, due to the carbonation and the chloride ions. For this purpose, analytical models based on second Fick\'s law are used to quantify CO2 and chloride ions diffusion, which enables to determine the corrosion time initiation. The mechanical degradation of reinforced concrete structures is modeles by the lumped damage model which accounts for stiffness loss, reinforcement mass loss and yield stress reduction due to the corrosive process. The lumped damage formulation was modified to include the state corrosion variable and the corrosion evolution law based on semi-empirical equations available in the literature. These equations determine the reinforcement\'s diameter reduction and the loss of resistant capacity of the reinforcement\'s bar. The corrosion problem is formulated as a stochastic process and solved by the Monte Carlo simulation for two examples: an isostatic beam and a hyperstatic frame. The limit state functions are based on the acceptable damage value. Curves of probability of corrosion initiation and probability of failure are obtained over a range of 50 years. In the hyperstatic case, the most probable failure path, also named the critical path, is determined. It is observed that the corrosive process causes changes on the critical path and, therefore, it must be accounted on structural repair analysis. Damage and probability of failure maps were developed to show the changes on the structural behavior due to the corrosion.

In chapter three it’s discussed the several variables that have influence in concrete carbonation, presenting a general view of the knowledge concerning the topic in Brasil and other countries. Chapter four presents and discuss the prediction models of carbonation and comparisons are made between the results of the main models. In chapter five it is presented the experimental work that intends to contribute with the knowledge about the carbonation and concrete covers variability by means of a case study. The studied structure was the parking garage of a 30 years residential building, located in the central zone of São Paulo city in Brasil, in witch were made a several number of measurements of carbonation depth, concrete cover, CO2 concentration and air relative humidity. The collected data was analyzed using variance analysis and the values of carbonation depth were compared with that estimated using prediction models. The theoretical calculation of the despassivation probability was compared with the real despassivation incidence. The variation coefficients obtained were almost compared with the results of other recent investigations. It is still presented the development of a computer program for predicting the initiation period using deterministic and probabilistic methods.
