Grimbeek, Marjorie January 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop an economic career choice instrument for grade 121earners, which conforms with the requirements of cultural fairness, validity and reliability. The various facets of adolescent development were analysed from the literature. Self-knowledge (identity) and career knowledge were analysed from various theoretical perspectives. The various facets of adolescent development had a direct influence on the career choice of learners. These facets served as a basis for the development of the different sections for the career choice instrument. In the empirical study a survey was conducted involving 321 grade 12 learners randomly selected from secondary schools in the Potchefstroom region. These learners completed the newly developed instrument. The reliability of the career choice instrument was determined by using the Cronbach Alpha Coefficient. Factor analysis were used to determine the validity of each section of the instrument. In order to determine whether the career choice instrument was culturally fair, a series of one-way ANOVAS, followed by Tukey tests were performed, whereafter effect sizes were determined. In the study good reliability indices were obtained for all sections of the measuring instrument. The reliability indices obtained from the Cronbach Alpha Coefficients, coincided relatively well with the reliability indices obtained for the MB-10 (Meyer Interest Questionnaire), the Jung Personality questionnaire and the LISRES-Y. Concerning the cultural aspect, the different race groups, white, black and coloured learners, differed significantly in respect of social development and values. Recommendations for further research for the use of the instrument in teaching practice are formulated from the research results, in particular with reference to the designing of a career choice instrument. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Education))--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2001

Career in mental health nursing : the Kenyan experience

Oywer, Elizabeth 03 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with choosing mental health nursing as a career, and to explore the possible ways of improving recruitment and retention of mental health nurses in Kenya. Quantitative, explorative descriptive research was conducted. Data collection was done by using questionnaires and focus group discussions. Three groups participated in the study: practicing mental health nurses (n=10), post-basic mental health nursing students (n=10) and final year basic nursing students (n=184). The findings revealed that basic nursing students do not intend to pursue a career in mental health nursing, and that there is an aging population of mental health nurses. The barriers to the mental health field include stigma, a poor working environment and inadequate career guidance. Marketing, policy and regulatory reforms, as well as positive work environments have been identified as strategies for improving the recruitment and retention of mental health nurses in Kenya. / Health Studies / Thesis (M.A. (Health Studies))

No. of bitstreams: 1 AntonioCava.pdf: 632756 bytes, checksum: 3e46f85ceab8e9d93cc50bc6d093795f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-19 / The study seeks to identify the factors that contribute to career choice for students at the end of high school, whether the choice based on some program-specific professional guidance, or following guidance from family, friends, teachers or professionals, or is just a situational imposition, depending on youth s social class. One can find several answers, depending on the socioeconomic status occupied by the individual; for each portion of the population, may occur the reproduction of his or hers socioeconomic context, since the factors that influence that choice may vary among different society strata. The literature research includes authors such as Pierre Bourdieu, Jean-Claude Passeron, Mary Alice Nogueira and Alipio Casali, among others. The study is completed with a field survey in which respondents were students from two high school institutions, respectively from public and private networks, both located in the city of São Bernardo do Campo (SP). It is, therefore, a literature and qualitative research. Empirical data were collected through the application of a questionnaire to direct responses, and also of an open question, so that the students involved would contribute new elements for the final analysis.

Avaliação da orientação profissional em grupo: o papel da informação no desenvolvimento da maturidade para a escolha da carreira / Evaluation of group Vocational Guidance: the role of information for the development of maturity to choose a career.

Marystella Carvalho Esbrogeo 31 July 2008 (has links)
This study aims at evaluating an intervention an intervention procedure done with adolescents, in Professional Guidance, according to the following variables: (1) professional information, (2) maturity to choose a career, and (3) group communication and group learning. The subjects were 28 adolescents, of both sexes, coming from public and private high schools and university preparation courses, aged between 15 and 19 who were attended at the Vocational Guidance Service at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters at Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo (FFCLRP/ USP). The participants were divided into two groups according to maturity: below average (group A, n=17) and above average (group B, n=11). The instruments used to gather the data were: (1) Questionnaire about Professional Information (QIP): What adolescents know about jobs and occupations?; (2) Maturity for Career Choice Scale (MCCS); (3) recordings of group sessions. The theoretical-methodological frame works that underpinned the intervention procedure and its analysis were: (1) Bohoslavskys clinical strategy, (2) Pichon-Rivières Operative Group approach and (3) Supers Development Theory for career choice. The data gathered by means of the QIP (closed questions) were treated and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Comparisons before and after interventions were done by means of the Wilcoxons non-parametric Test and McNemars X² Test. Another comparison was done between the answers of the male and female participants by means of the Fishers Exact Test and Mann-Whitneys non-parametric Test. The open answers were analyzed by Bardin. The data gathered by means of the MCCS were analyzed quantitatively by means of Wilcoxons Test. And the analysis of the group procedures was done as based on the synthesis of the group recordings, focusing the evaluation vectors of the Inverted Cone: communication and the learning process. The results showed that the participants were not well informed about career choice and that career information could help them to make a career decision. And the internet is the resource more frequently used by adolescents to communicate with pals. At the beginning of the guiding process, the girls looked for career information in books and guides more than the boys did. The girls also went on the internet to do research and schools take, whereas the boys used it to play. The results from MCCS showed a significant difference for the second application, the values being higher than the first for the following sub-scales: Determination, Self-knowledge and Total Maturity. At the end of the Vocational guiding procedure, the group showed to be looking for more career information than at the beginning and favored communication and learning to mature and to choose a career.

Factors affecting the decision making process of African American students regarding the choice of hospitality management as a career

Bradford, Berkita S. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Management & Dietetics / Carol W. Shanklin / The purpose of this study was to identify factors affecting the decision process of African American students regarding the choice of hospitality management as a career. The significant influence of others, perception and awareness of the industry, resistance to servitude, and personal background were explored in the context of Omi and Winant’s Racial Formation Theory. Focus groups were conducted with hospitality management and business students to investigate the above constructs in-depth. Questionnaires were administered to students enrolled in College of Businesses at 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities who were majoring in hospitality management or some aspect of business. The results of the focus groups indicated that the students are aware that their race may determine what jobs they are offered in the hospitality industry, how rapidly they will be promoted, how society views them as individuals, and how society views an entire race when that particular race is found in low level jobs in large numbers or perception of an industry, and the pay scale. The students indicated that servitude is when one person has more power than someone else or someone is in control. Hospitality students were more likely to support the idea that the industry provides opportunities for advancements (χ2 = 33.64, df = 3, p < .001) and offer balanced pay in terms of race and ethnicity (χ2 = 14.49, df = 3, p < .01). For each servitude measure hospitality students were less likely to support notions of servitude in the hospitality industry than non-hospitality students. Non-hospitality students had a strong association with the idea that hospitality jobs are demeaning (χ2 = 10.16, df = 3, p < .05) and include positions that typically involved housekeeping and kitchen work (χ2 = 28.72, df = 3, p < .001). In general the data for African Americans revealed significant relationships between the outcome measure, career choice, and personal background (r = -.118, p < .05), awareness and perception of the hospitality industry (r = .116, p < .05) and significance of others (r = .164, p < .01) using two-tailed test.

High school string orchestra teacher as a career choice: A survey of 11th- and 12th-grade high school string orchestra students in Texas.

Brumbaugh, Sherron M. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe 11th- and 12th-grade high school string orchestra students in Texas public schools in terms of their decision to enter the field of string orchestra teaching as a possible career choice or to pursue another field of study. Convenience sampling techniques were used to secure a study population of 1,683 high school string orchestra students. The Junior and Senior High School String Orchestra Student Survey (researcher designed) was used to gather demographic characteristics, students' perceptions on selected intrinsic/extrinsic work values, tangible elements of teaching, intrinsic characteristics of string orchestra teaching, and individuals assisting in students' career choices. Selected elements of teaching cited by students for their lack of interest in string orchestra teaching were also reviewed. Analysis procedures for descriptive statistics included measures of central tendency, crosstabulation, frequencies and percentages. Consistent with prior research, it was found that a larger number of female students over male students were interested in string orchestra teaching. Students interested in fields outside of string orchestra teaching reported higher class grades, more honors and advanced classes and higher SAT/ACT mean scores. Students interested in string orchestra teaching reported a higher percentage of brothers/sisters, mothers and fathers who played instruments and relatives who were teachers. These students also reported a greater importance of a career that was self-rewarding, that would be directly helpful to society and where they could help contribute to the welfare of society. Students interested in string orchestra teaching expressed the great importance of their deep devotion to music and their desire to be a positive role model for children. Students interested in string orchestra teaching reported the great importance of their high school orchestra director as one of the individuals assisting them in their career decisions. Also consistent with prior research, the number one cited reason for a lack of interest in string orchestra teaching was found to be that teacher's salaries were perceived as too low. Examinations of ethnic group differences relative to the characteristics under investigation were also explored.

Deutsch, Tobias 28 September 2016 (has links)

Hönigschmid, Petra 30 April 2014 (has links)
