Examining the "Portfolio Careers" of Classical Musician Entrepreneurs through the Lens of Seven Clarinetists

Guzmán, Jen (Jennifer) 05 1900 (has links)
Many classically-trained clarinetists do not know how to use their performance skills and life experiences to create financially sustainable and artistically fulfilling musical opportunities. Music careers have traditionally included teaching positions in academia and performance positions in professional ensembles. Because of the limited number of jobs in these two areas, clarinetists, and classical musicians in general, often turn to work that provides financial security but may lack artistic fulfillment. The proposed solution to this situation is for musicians to create "portfolio careers," which is defined in this document as a combination of multiple part-time jobs to create full-time work. The purpose of this document was to examine best practices in creating and sustaining a portfolio career through the specific lens of seven clarinetists who have shown themselves to be successful performers and entrepreneurs. Results showed that the best practices include: 1) turn ideas into actions, even if the idea is still in the prototype stage, 2) build and utilize a network of successful and supportive people, 3) say "yes" to opportunities, and 4) find creative work outside the field of music that inspires music-related work.

Selected or Rejected? : Assessing Aspiring Writers’ Attempts to Achieve Publication

Fürst, Henrik January 2017 (has links)
In many markets for cultural goods, gatekeepers select the cultural goods, relatively few cultural goods are selected, and the criteria for selection are unclear to both artists and gatekeepers. Not knowing whether cultural goods are of the 'right' quality to be selected, artists and gatekeepers become preoccupied with handling quality uncertainty. This thesis studies such handling of quality uncertainty before, during, and after aspiring writers attempt to succeed in the publishing market. Drawing on eighty interviews with mainly aspiring writers and publishers in Sweden, three papers investigate three phases of handling quality uncertainty in the publishing market. First, in attempting to get published, writers handled uncertainty about how the quality of their work would be evaluated in the publishing market by using appraisal devices: trusted, knowledgeable appraisals of their work’s chances of success or failure on the publishing market. Second, publishers responded to uncertainty about the quality of manuscripts by learning to consider means before ends, such that certain qualities of their reading experience became the necessary means for realizing that the manuscript might be publishable. This realization moved the manuscript from the discovery phase to justification phase, in which publishers made a final decision to select or reject the manuscript. Third, for the rejected writer, the uncertainty of not knowing how the publisher had determined the quality of the manuscript made it possible to excuse the course of events. Writers gave reasons why their manuscript had been rejected based on how they imagined publishers had determined its quality. They accepted the occurrence of failure but dismissed the responsibility for having failed. Writers also engaged in justifications, refusals, and concessions of the perceived failure. These concepts for analyzing the publishing market are based on a perspective that takes into account subjectivity, temporality, and the condition of quality uncertainty. The perspective and concepts are useful for understanding other market situations in the cultural industries, wherein the successful hiring of cultural workers and the acquisition of cultural goods are rare relative to the number of aspirants, and wherein assessments are conditioned by quality uncertainty that needs to be handled. / ERC 263699-CEV

Pimentel, Maria Odília de Quadros January 2015 (has links)
The general aim of the present research was to investigate the professional insertion of the former students of the Minas Gerais State Conservatories of Music (CEM) technical education programs. The specific objectives aimed to identify who are the CEM‟s former students; to map their professional activities; to examine their working conditions; and to analyze how they evaluate the technical program they have attended. This research was guided by the concepts of professional insertion, labor, employment and occupation, as well as by the definition of job insecurity and work flexibility. The method chosen to carry out this study was the survey, and students, who have completed the technical education program from 10 out of the 12 CEMs in the years 2010, 2011 and 2012, composed the sample population of the survey. A random probabilistic sampling was used and the data collection instrument chosen was a self-administrated on-line questionnaire. In order to analyze the data, descriptive statistics was carried from univariate, bivariate and sub-group comparison analyzes, and inferential statistics undertaken through tests of statistical significance. Throughout this research, the professional insertion is considered a path, an educational process. The professional insertion path of the former CEM students is outlined from traces left by them, traces that are essential to demarcate the aspects that show the relation that the former students establish between the technical education offered by the CEM and their professional career choices. The results indicate that the former student‟s professional insertion path is marked by social-demographical characteristics, such as age, race/ethnicity, sex and religion; by precociousness, both in their formation and in their professional performance; by a continuity of their professional formation, in the musical field or in other areas of study; and, in some cases, by a professional insertion dysfunction, since not all of the former students have been working in the area of their formal training. Regarding the working conditions, in spite of the job insecurity, work flexibility and the low salaries – which are below the national average for most of the former students, their satisfaction with their jobs is high and the courses evaluation – for the majority of the former students – is very positive. The job market for music careers is characterized by an employment crisis and not by a working crisis. The former students perform various musical activities related to different moments of the cultural system. This fact indicates that, although the CEM‟s technical programs have as their main goal the formation of singers and instrument players, they do not attach a unique identity to their former students. A mosaic of trajectories characterizes the former CEM students‟ professional insertion. This mosaic is constituted by former students that continue to work in the music field – either as students, as professionals or as both students and professionals; former students who migrate to different careers because they couldn‟t find the desired working conditions or because they did not want to professionalize in music; and former students who are still attached to the musical field through the participation in musical groups and/or developing volunteer work. The results of the present research can enable the evaluation and planning of the CEMs, and therefore contribute to a better understanding of the programs‟ articulations with the job market for music graduates and, in a broader way, with the whole society.

Transnational career agents : A comparative study on international engineering students in Sweden

Holm, Jenny January 2016 (has links)
The mobility of students has increased dramatically in the past decades which primarily is a consequence of globalization (Ninnes & Hellstén, 2005). Many higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world have responded to the global educational trend by actively recruiting students from abroad, with the incentive of maintaining a competitive position on the global, knowledge-based market (Knight, 2004). Simultaneously, an increasing number of students have responded to the expanded opportunities which have become available, aspiring to secure the best education to facilitate their path into a well-remunerated career (Waters & Brooks, 2011). By employing a qualitative research approach, this study explores how international degree-seeking students undertaking engineering studies in Swedish HE, take on their career development within a global framework. The findings are compared and analyzed in order to provide further insights into the career trajectories of engineering students from different countries. The findings suggest that the participants in the study have employed a large degree of agency and independence in advancing their career development further. Moreover, it has also been indicated that they, as global professionals, uphold a flexible stance towards future career opportunities, regardless of where in the world these would be located. Considering the increasing numbers of international students that occupy Swedish HEIs, the study concludes that further attention needs to be paid to gain further insights into the realities of this student population, both to increase our understanding of how they respond to the forces of globalization and to safeguard that career services address the real career needs of this population.

[pt] FICO PORQUE QUERO: UM ESTUDO SOBRE JOVENS QUE VÊM CONSTRUINDO SUAS CARREIRAS EM UMA EMPRESA PRIVADA / [en] I STAY BECAUSE I WANT TO STAY: A STUDY ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN BUILDING THEIR CAREERS IN A PRIVATE COMPANY

BRUNA DI SANTO PASTORE 12 December 2019 (has links)
[en] The difference between generations has made some changes in the labor market behaviors, and the literature aimed at career aspirations of contemporary youth has emphasized the trend to move across different organizations. Although almost inexpressive within the same literature, some researches emphasize that this behavior should not be generalized. The same organizational characteristics valued by those who seek to build a career without borders can belong in some young people argue who are interested in building a long-term career. For this reason, it is important to understand what motivates the young people who build their careers in the traditional path, it means in the same organization. In this scenario, this study s main goal is to understand the reason why some young professionals who work in a private national company chose to build their careers in this organization. The research tried to understand what is the motivation for working in the same company, and how they feel about current opportunities. We interviewed professionals up to 34 years old, who have worked in this company for, at least, four years, and who have presented relevant career changes in this period. The main results of the research indicate that exposure to major challenges and responsibilities, combined with the autonomy given to them and the dynamism of the business are the main factors that have motivated these young people to continue working in the current company.

A framework to position the somatology profession in South Africa

Vosloo, Marlé. January 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech.) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, [2009] / Somatologists in South Africa no longer only practice beauty technology. They receive highly skilled training in the well being of the whole body, thus a more holistic approach is emphasized. Currently, stakeholders in the field of somatology are facing a number of challenges, which could impact greatly on the profession. The question of recurriculation, in order to align the training provided for somatologists with the new Higher Education Qualification Framework (HEQF) and the possible registration of the profession with a statutory body, are some of the challenges posed to the profession. In order to position the somatology profession favourably in South Africa, it was thus necessary to explore the current status of the profession through input from all stakeholders in the industry and to develop a possible framework. The objective of the study was firstly to obtain quantitative information from stakeholders in the field of somatology on matters related to their professional training, employment, recurriculation, referral trends to and from medical professionals and registration of the profession. Secondly, to obtain quantitative information from other medical professionals regarding referrals to somatologists and thirdly, to develop a possible framework that could facilitate the positioning of somatology more favourably as a profession in South Africa. Data were collected by means of two separate questionnaires, one sent to stakeholders in the somatology field and the other to medical professionals specializing in the fields of dermatology, plastic surgery and oncology. The results indicated that the stakeholders in the somatology field were satisfied with the current training provided by registered IX private providers and Universities of Technology. Job satisfaction was experienced by most, however, the hours and days worked could be improved. The need for short courses, as a means of staying in touch with the latest developments in the somatology industry, was identified. Currently, there exists a referral trend between somatologists and medical professionals, however, the frequency of referrals could be improved. The need for the somatology profession to register with a statutory body was identified by both somatologists and medical professionals. Two possible frameworks, with regards to the training provided for somatologists and the registration of the profession, were compiled based on the feedback obtained in the study, in order to position the profession somatology more favourably in South Africa.

Contribution à l’étude des inégalités scolaires selon le type d’orientation en classe de seconde : pratiques d’enseignement des mathématiques et habitus professionnel / Contribution to the schools inequalities studies : teaching practices of mathématics and professionnal habitus

Lafenetre, Pascal 11 December 2012 (has links)
Nearly 80% of a class age is to be taken as far as the baccalauréat by the French Educational School System. Yet, this democratization of the system should not hide the persistence of certain inequalities. It seems indeed, that some school inequalities crystallize at school. That’s why this work will aim at showing, at first, that these inequalities increase during the 1st year of high school (our seconde). Moreover, inequalities of access come on top of inequalities of success. Then, it will be demonstrated in that work that teaching methods (different from one school to another), could as well explain the increase of inequalities. The first study will mainly deal with the evolution of the success inequalities in mathematics between general, technical and professional French high schools. It will be demonstrated as well that pupils don’t have the same opportunities according to their initial rank and according to the school they’re in. The second study will deal with the teaching methods and interviews of 10 teachers, from different types of high schools (LP, LT, LG). A quantitative and qualitative analysis of their speech and practices through their interviews and during the class will help characterize their practices according to the place they teach. It will thus help highlighting what could be called a professional habitus.
